So.... My XFX Back DD 7970 had a fan die. I figured I can RMA it, be without a card for a few weeks, or just do this:

Funny thing is the fan RPM's keep showing up as negative. I think I'll just unplug them

Nice thing is I'm at 1170MHz running smooth.

I'll update the thread if (or rather when) It fail, falls off, spectacularly chewing up the insides of the computer.

You like to support the cheap production with replacing the fan on your own bill?

No. I think RMA is better but Arctic cooler is fantastic low temps and low noise.

I'd personally bite the bullet and RMA it.  The card is damn near new and with a dead fan/that thing taped to it, its value has been significantly decreased.  I think the old adage is:  Do it right, do it once.

Dropped XFX a line, they're actually just gonna send me replacement fans, since they can be replaced without removing the heatsink.

Love XFX support!

The fans on my 7950 (same as this card) just died after one month of use.  That's both fans!  It's a little crappy if you ask me, I think they're using really cheap brushless fans.

Pull them out carefully with a vice http://www.irwin.com/tools/brands/vise-grip

Add some grease and plop them in you should be good to go for a few months. These FirstD fans suck big time and XFX has been using them on all their double Ds.

I also had a burnt fan with this card, and XFX sent me an entire new cooler, with both fans.

Seems like this card is using very bad quality fans, FirstDo or something, they don't even have a webpage.

How did you contact XFX? I have two of these cards and the fans need constant attention.

I think I'm just going to order 2x 80mm 6w fluid bearing fans and tear these ones out... I have low hopes for their replacements and I can just put them back in when I want to RMA.  I'm not sure what the problem is, I think it may be that they're brushless and should be in any configuration except horizontal (gigabyte cards suffer from the same problem).  Fluid bearing fans have no such problems though.

Through their support page. You need to register the card with them. I was offered to return them the entire card or have them send the replacement cooler.
