So this is a common problem?  I withdrew 3 bitcoins from my MtGox wallet 36 hours ago - nothing.  No response to support request, nothing.  This is my first experience - how do they justify the wait?  Anyone receive an explanation as to WHY?

Transactions must be included in a block to be properly completed. When you send a transaction, it is broadcast to miners. Miners can then optionally include it in their next blocks. Miners will be more inclined to include your transaction if it has a higher transaction fee.

Bitcoin withdrawal is likely due to the network taking hours to process the tx. There has been times of 9hrs before it gets included in first block.

This affects everyone, I dont think mtgox is paying fees/high enough fees to process BTC transfers faster.

I think there should be an option where I can pay the .001 fee to get my transaction put in the blockchain faster.  I'd be completely willing to do that for more instant gratification.  Seems a ridiculous way to do business - my first transaction has left a bitter taste in my mouth and I'll be promptly searching for other more reliable methods of obtaining bitcoin.

I withdrew on 6/8, finally arrived on 6/18, but only AFTER I had contacted support.

Mt Gox may be purposefully delaying withdrawals until contacted through support, so I'd encourage anyone who has a pending withdrawal to contact support and lay the pressure on.

They are. Try selling bitcoins anywhere right now within 1% of MtGox - you can't. So, it's either save 2-4% by withdrawing from MtGox and waiting 2-5 weeks, or spend that 2-4% and get your money fairly quickly. Oh, and I forgot to mention, you can only get out of BTC outside of MtGox for 2-4% if you're talking a volume of a few hundred BTC. Much more than that would clear the books of the other exchanges.

After this latest withdrawal, that's what I am doing.  Am now using Bitfloor.

The problem, as Maged noted, is that not many BUYERS are using other exchanges, which drops the price compared to Mt. Gox, where the price is being inflated because of the lack of people wanting to sell there.

So, anyone who wants to buy Bitcoins cheaper should look at buying from Bitfloor or one of the other non-MtGox exchanges.

I hope bitinstant is taking advantage of this opportunity as well.  They could use MtGox pricing, but do the actual coin purchases at other exchanges on the cheap.

FYI:

Long withdrawal times were present already last year. I remember after June last year that I requested some 1K USD withdrawals, and one of them took a complete month to complete. I remember not being too happy about it.

Awhile back I have one take nearly three weeks just to get to Dwolla. I have one under $300 going through right now, and it's been eight days since I requested the withdraw.

Kinda off topic, but I am happy with Bitfloor. Withdraws from there are always three business days or less. And you can have them send those funds right to your bank. No middle man (Dwolla) is needed. I've read around that deposits to a Bitfloor account takes less then 10 minutes with the Chase Bank option. I'd take a look at Bitfloor if you guys haven't already. Don't know how trust worthy they are since they are fairly new. But so far, I am more then happy with them.
