I'll send the 4.5 BTC. Address?
References would be nice too, but are not necessary.

Don't do that, seriously. I'd suggest you to take a look around this subforum before starting any actual lending. Unless he's a sockie of you, then carry on.

To build up false rep that could be used in future 'loans'. It's an old tactic over here.

I knew about this technique but was unsure if this is the same like the "confidence" loan trick.

Also, is there a thread that shows people with big balances ( like me ) looking to loan to others how to stay safe and what ID to ask for so as to not get scammed etc. ?

Obviously you can blame me - I'm feeding the trolls.

New users come along, find out what's what and work out how it works.
They then run the gauntlet of trolls asking for a minor loan in public, or approach a lender via pm.
I'm prepared to risk a few coins to find out is someone is genuine or not, but that doesn't mean I am going to lend them hundreds.

What I found really disrespectful was when nckrazze insisted a lender did the shoe on head thing to get a loan.

If he thought he was a scammer I could understand it, but he filled the loan then posted the photo Undecided

I'm not sure that everyone here understands that a putting shoes/feet on things disrespect the thing in many cultures. Instead, it was just a stupid way to confirm that the person in the picture *might* be who you are dealing with.

And in other news, I was asked for a group photo with the respected bitcoiners of this community to prove I wasn't a fake PatrickHarnett.  I don't mind being a false PatrickHarnett, but I have no idea what the rest of you look like, haven't met you, and might do so in a couple of years.  Photos don't necessarily prove anything.

(as far as I know, I'm not a fake, but I provided some other credentials to someone I've never met, spoken with or seen - I hope they weren't a fake.  And if they recognise this - I hope they get a good laugh out of it too)

Why would anyone scam just $38?  Serious question here.

When I was 13, $38 was a lot - but that was a long time ago.
When I was 21, it would buy a week of groceries, but that was also a while ago.
Now $38 doesn't even buy a decent bottle of whiskey (but decent vodka maybe).  Simply a matter of degrees.

By the above reasoning, for 4.5 BTC I have some entertainment and have identified a 13 year old with a bad credit history.

As someone who was accused of being a scammer on my first loan request, I'd like to defend Patrick's methods.

He may take a hit occasionally, but his loan business is obviously still profitable.

Moreover, I know he has personally helped me get more involved in the Bitcoin world; I'm sure this is the same for other people who might have otherwise been turned down.
