Is the service down now ? I deposit a small amount, but it isn't showing in my balance. Can't even redeem it as its not showing. This is the first time I had this problem. Down for anyone else as well ?

The website is probably having problems in general. Saw my latest posts here? I'm assuming that we're waiting for a response from the dev.

I talked to the developer and he says that he might just end this project, he doesn't really know what else to do with it as it is not really a big source of income for himself. I told him that he needs to send back all deposited Bitcoin to their respective sending addresses, but if you did not receive your said BTC please tell me and I'll notify him promptly.

Its just a small amount, and if he does refund it, a lot of people don't usually send from their own address for anonymity, so sending it back to the sending address might not be the right way to refund. Sad to hear about the service closing, I used to prefer this much over services like google voice.

It's sad to see projects like this go. I had heard of Chiliphone from this forum but had never seen any attempts of the developer to promote it.
It's a great project, maybe if he gave it a push it would be more succesfull.

Chiliphone.com and it's program are being put up for sale by the owner. It is a great program that works but simply did not have the advertising or reach that other bitcoin related sites have. Please message me if you would like to talk to the developer about buying this, it would go well attached to a current btc related site or just as is with more advertising.

Thats sad to hear. Also, Always best to clear the deposits and refund people who deposited after they disabled services without any announcements on the site. I had a 1 chip deposit too . Not that I care for 1 chip, but if a lot of people deposited during those days, it might sum up to a big volume. As for advertising, I really didn't see any, except for this and one another forum post. I still think its like Skype/Google voice and is perfect as an anonymous option for making calls. Maybe the owner can try again with proper advertising.

The Owner/Developer said that he refunded the deposits back to the sending addresses, he told me to direct people from me to him in the case there was a problem. Also, he simply does not have the time to advertise and try again. As I said myself, it would be best if chiliphone were added to an already active site with a high BTC user traffic in order for it to gain more use. That is why it is best for him to sell it, so others can get better use of it.

Not the best thing to do , considering people would send through other sites rather than their own wallets as the anonymity is a big factor. However, I checked the addresses in the sending side, and none of them got the amount back.

He said he will give it a check tomorrow because he needs to go to sleep, but he believes nobody had any outstanding balances on the site. And the other sites could just handle it anonymously by simply making it a completely different page that doesn't involve logging into the main portion of the site.

I'm building a competing product at http://Bitphone.net It's not quite ready to launch yet, but we are getting there. I'm also sad to see chiliphone go. I am a competitor, yes, but its better to have many products that can grow the user base of bitcoin phone customers than for one site to try to reach all the traffic. You learn this stuff as you get older I saw in another forum post the developer wasn't making much money and couldn't advertise, etc. to generate enough revenue to make it profitable. This may be true, I'm sure this is a tough market. You are in the end competing with Skype, Google Voice, Traditional telcos and pretty much every VoIP service that's out there. Telco is cut rate, cheapest rates win! Phone call minutes are priced like commodities.. I'm going into this (Investing my own money to build BitPhone) knowing full-well that it will be tough to compete with the aforementioned companies. At the end of the day its about placing calls and paying for them. Then what kind of phone are you using and how did you dial the call (some contact list, clickable link, dial it manually ?) Chiliphone was the first Bitcoin phone to utilize WebRTC technology to make the browser itself the phone. I applaud the developer of chiliphone for building what he did! WebRTC is a fairly new technology, and still a work in progress. http://www.w3.org/TR/webrtc/I plan to offer a similar "payphone" functionality in BitPhone, but I've taken WebRTC to the next level and built a Secure WebRTC Portal which you can create. A portal is really just a unique Url that you can share with others, when they goto the same link the portal becomes a pure, encrypted, peer-peer connection between the users in the portal. You can share video, audio, files, screenshare and chat all through this private portal. This is similar to other services that offer "web-conferencing" but all based on Bitcoin and using WebRTC (your browser) to do everything. You won't need to install any software (maybe a browser extension) to make all this work! I plan to offer an custom domain like whatever.bitphone.net for a small monthly fee. We will hopefully be launching a limited beta next month! Gavin

Sounds nice , looking forward to it. Also like Chiliphone, calls made through Bitphone will be untraceable correct ? Also , let us know if there is an ANN thread for it.

haha chilliphone wont be able to sell thanks to this competitor that just showed up. maybe he should let someone run it and he is a silent partner. That is the best way he might get money for his site.

True, however I am not really sure if that would be a big problem for Chiliphone. Since its already established, a buyer for that can easily make it coexist with any new service thats comes up in the bitcoin ecosystem . The original Ann thread doesn't have a lot of posts either, so maybe there isn't a big market for it then. However I would expect a big market for anonymous calling, so not sure why it is so.

Yes, "calls made through Bitphone will be untraceable", but it gets sticky with carriers / phone numbers involved. Phone Number based calls are routed through various carriers which I have no control of. You can't say untraceable IMHO.. anonymous, yes, untraceable, doubtful. The Portal is 100% encrypted and secure since its peer-peer, no carriers involved..

The way Chiliphone worked was that it never logged the IP addresses- atleast claimed to , which alone is sufficient to make it untraceable back to us. You shouldn't have a problem sticking to that, i suppose
