as a programmer this "challenge" is just stupid.

"Hell yeah! I generated my public key with some software. Cool right?"
"Hey folks look this is my public key! Now try to crack my public key!"
"HAHA You can't! Because my software is so super secure."

No your software is not bugfree and not seucre, but that well known algorithm/concept is.

"Yeah But ... But... your fiat stink and fiat is not seucre. Your fiat can't do that."

I'm also afraid of bank robberies, because that's the way i will lose my money and not on some exchanges.
Do you mean that 5 bucks in my pocket? Oh well yeah I could afford to lose that 5 bucks.
At least not losing my money consistently. BTC to the moon.
I could not afford to lose my private key and this responsibility all by my own!

"I mean the internet you dumbass, YOUR CC INFORMATION and STUFF."

brain + livelinux cd -+ vpn.

"Whatever! Angry A lot of people downloaded my file!"

Yeah good for you. If you put 200.000 -  500.000 BTC in that wallet, you may rise someones attention to crack that wallet.
btw i think that wallet encryption is symmetric. I really hope you used a long complex password!

Nice idea. But it would be more fun if the balance number is big. You sure you have already put everything you have?  Grin

Cool idea; don't have time to check it out at the moment but posting here to follow along with it when I can.
I also agree that the power of cryptographically secure mathematics is one of the best advertisements for Bitcoin.

Also, I've said this before, but knocking the amount of another's savings = not cool. 10 BTC as life savings is much better than 0 BTC, and without knowing his life story how can you judge him based off that amount? Many people are not able to save anything- either they don't make enough to save after paying the bills, or possibly they take care of sick and/or aging family members and that eats up their extra money, or....  a thousand other reasons. Best to not judge another at all, it has no sort of positive effect overall.

Oh, and everyone that has mocked his savings of 10 BTC, please sign a message from your address containing greater than 10 BTC...

Sorry, I know I got off on a bit of a tangent here, but that shit really bugs me.

So, you are a "programmer" saying that someone would be able to "crack" a wallet, if it had enough BTC in it to be worth the time trying?
I could be wrong, but I don't think there are wallets with +200k atm. You can try this one: https://blockchain.info/address/1FeexV6bAHb8ybZjqQMjJrcCrHGW9sb6uF
That amout would change your life, so go ahead!

i think you'll find I'm judging him/her based on the overhyped nature of the article.

anyone knowing even the most basic math wouldn't bother attempting to hack it, and the author states life savings in order to elude some huge bounty (ie I seriously doubt its their life savings).

however if I am wrong and this truly is their life savings then my advice of (no matter what their situation); using their time more productively rather then wasting it posting articles inviting people to rob them, is still sound advice, no?

sure is, for people in a position to take your advice.

for those that aren't it's just condescending.

Fun and clever idea. Not to mention very brave.

If done right, not risky at all. That is the whole point of the site, to show others that cryptography can secure wallets.

He has had his wallet.dat for almost 1 year and plenty of "hackers" have downloaded it.

Most people do not use a sufficiently secure password. This is because there is some amount of security in keeping your wallet file/private key out of the public domain. There is a pretty good change IMO that it would cost less then 10 btc to crack the OP's password therefore doing so would be NPV positive assuming it is believed that he is actually has 10 btc in his wallet
