Don't just automatically assume every coin is a scam and only made to scam, there's many different uses for altcoins and making a new altcoin.  Some people just do them for testing, or an experiment, try out new concepts with the coin, promotion of something, etc.  IMO some of the altcoin are much improved over the original, or have completed different uses.

New coin launches are few and far between at the moment. I doubt anyone would throw much money at a new alt after all the pump dump/scams we have had. A new coin has to offer something different than the run of the mill clone if people are to buy it.

Alt coins aren't dying but they're not going anywhere either. They'll likely remain stagnant unless they offer something that bitcoin doesnt and can be used as a viable currency so they need merchants behind it otherwise alts are just useless and for newbies to play around with.

It's because too many crap coins. I've got a bunch of crap coins on exchanges, I don't even care about them, lost all the money I bought them with, maybe I have $10 in crap coins

2 minutes is a long time, all you gotta do is git clone some coin and recursively search and replace the name of the coin in all the source files. Then you need fancy photoshops describing how your awesome new coin is the next big thing and a huge ICO of course, then use the coins from the ICO to bribe an exchange and dump all of your premined coins to the unsuspecting investor and disappear until you've blown all the money on hookers and cocaine to start all over again.
