Does anyone know what file I have to use to update the firmware on the S5? I went to the website and downloaded it, but after extracting it there are 4 files, initramfs.bin.SD, runme.sh, u-boot.img and uImage.bin. and I don't know which one is the one to select to update the firmware. On my S3 it was just a .bin file. Thanks.

Download the entire tar.gz archive. The file is extracted inside the S5's embedded computer. You need to upload the whole tar.gz file.
If the file is unarchived  (e.g. in MacOS X; re-download it using right-click and "Save as")

Official Link to firmware file page.

Code:
SD-S5-20150107.tar.gz
https://bitmaintech.com/support.htm?pid=00720150101032800325X8cMcY2y068F

Login to the S5 web interface and goto Upgrade tab. Choose the correct file i.e. for e.g. SD-S5-20150107.tar.gz and press `Flash Image' button

I tried to upgrade with that latest file and my S5 just wilted. Hash speed went down to around 800 - 900 GHs and hardware errors tripled (to .73443%)

I restored the system and it's back to the speed and error rate I was used to.

It's oc'd at 387.5.

Did I miss something? I thought the upgrade would stop the intermittent issue where 1 board would quit. But it just made things worse.

I would suggest as a baseline to to normal freq.  With this see if your getting normal regular speeds.  Test it for a few hours I would say (you might be able to tell in a lot sooner time I just like going slow).    If that works then go up in freq.

I want to see if it get's normal speeds.  If still not normal I would reload firmware.

NICEHASH S5 FIRMWARE--

The mining site NiceHash "www.nicehash.com" has a firmware for the S5 that includes an upgrade to CGminer 4.9 with extranonce control.  I have downloaded it, but I have not flashed it.  I do not know what version of Antminer S5 firmware the CGminer mod is coupled with.  Here is the link:

https://www.nicehash.com/download/AntMiner-S5-SD-firmware_cgminer_4.9.0_nicehash_and_performance_graph.tar.gz

Has anyone tried this firmware?  It is packaged in an archive, just like the official updates.  I'd like to know if anyone has used it, and the results.

Thanks for any information or opinions!       --scryptr

Yes people have tried it.  I personally have not done my S5 as if flash is bad you are stuck with a miner with not official firmware on it.

I have used S4 and C1 versions, and had no issues but only used them temporarily.  But yes there is a small risk with any flash no matter what it is.

THANK YOU! --

for the reply.  I have the latest (July) official firmware on my S5, and I am curious about which controller version NiceHash has packaged with their S5 archiive.  BitMain corrected several controller bugs with the update, and I would not want to loose the improvements to gain better mining software.  Does anyone know?       --scryptr

It is kinda like playing with fire on controllers that do not use the sd card.  I wish they all used the sd card for a few bucks the controlers become much harder to brick.

But honestly to OP look at nicehash right now there is just not a profit there to really justify flashing it for that one pool.  If a new coin came out or something there might be a day or two of more profit but it just does not happen often.

CGMINER 4.9--

My concern is upgrading the mining software.  There were instructions on how to upgrade the mining software by SSH without flashing the BIOS for the S3 miners.  I really would rather do only that, because the controller in the official 15 JUL 2015 Antminer firmware upgrade is good.  I don't want to flash someone else's package and get an older controller version.

I have connected to the S5 by SSH, but that is about it.  I didn't write anything to the system, just poked in and looked.  Any help here?
