The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

Is the gateway correct?  Sounds like it can not contact to the pool to get work.

Seem like wrong network setting. Could you please post the screen shot of network setting page?

The most likely scenario is definitely related to network settings.  I suspect you are probably running your home network on a different subnet than he was running at his house.  Refer to the following link for easy setup instructions for S1:

I had a similar issue to this. Try changing your DNS to "8.8.8.8" - that's the free Google DNS and got me up and mining quickly.

I'd hit that little reset button.

All my second hand S1's get reset and switched to DHCP.  Once my router allocates an IP address they keep it.  I just use Advanced IP Scanner to find them and then make a list.

I do it this way because although I have decent computing skills but networking is definitely NOT one of them.
