I'm going to be installing Ubuntu on my Windows box soon, and I heard that bitcoin runs on Linux too. I have the wallet.dat on a USB stick ready to be moved over already. I was wondering if I should do the same with the blockchain: will it still work on a new OS, and is it worth the trouble?

I am not sure how it works but there is a blockchain out there on github that you can check out. |

I am not sure how it works but there is a blockchain out there on github that you can check out. Since the entire point is to save bandwidth, downloading a blockchain on github is not a very attractive choice for me. |

Assuming that you are using the vanilla client, the OS doesn't really affect the blockchain database format so long as the file is named correctly and in the correct folder. But unless you have some real bandwidth issues, it's probably not worth the risk or the trouble. |

Yes, you can port the blockchain. I did that when my windows system blew up the HDD and I installed Ubuntu, but used the blockchain I had recovered from the failing HDD  |

I think it's worth the trouble. Downloading the blockchain takes a long time and plenty of bandwidth.

Thanks guys. I'm finished the backups now, and decided the blockchain is too big to fit on the same thumb drive. It's more convienient and probably safer to redownload it.

Get a 8GB drive. They cost like 7 bucks now at Walmart.
Oh and I figure out my issue with the thumb drive for all you that know i had an issue :-)

The exact size of the thumb drive  . There's already a whole bunch of stuff on it though, so the blockchain (2+ GB) won't fit. |
