bitcoin has more than 5 years already.. and worse things happened with BTC and it is still alive. I think OP needs to study some BTC history to put things in perspective

yes I am sure there are "in" for doing all of this, when security is pretty good. Now I do not dare to save a lot of money in the exchanger

Yes mate..! I never trust the 3rd party enough to have a large sum of coins into it..! ppl will get hard lessons from this. But I think there are ppl who will ignore this. Probably the decentralized exchange is the answer,

How can we really protect ourselves from this hackers. If this couldnt be solved then Bitcoin will not even reach 2 years.
Don't send your coins to dodgy exchanges? Use decentralised ones that let you hold on to your own coins until it is time to sell.

There doesn't seem to be many decentralized exchanges currently but this will all change over time. I think most bitcoin related infrastructure will move to decentralization eventually - markets, exchanges, even possibly forums and social networks.

But I see here that bter's COLD wallets were hacked. Looks like some very bad random numbers.... very bad..... who knows. However, we're trying to solve these problems with our prototype Wall of Coins: https://wallofcoins.com , which eventually will be entirely decentralized. We'll building towards that ... will take quite a while! Bitcoin talk post on it if you're interested...would *love* any feedback to consider, and criticism is more than welcome: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=812397.0

caesar the ape, i just realized that you were actually asking a question i think...? Well what you can do is: educate yourself more on these issues. Bitcoin is a great way to store value, but it's also a huge target. The best thing you can do is get your own wallet, store bitcoin yourself, and only keep bitcoin on another exchange (if you have to) for a very short period of time.

If people keep their own coins they don't have to worry about trusting a third party to do so for them.

I think it is a stretch to say that your security is getting better when funds in your cold wallet is stolen. Your cold wallet is suppose to be the most safe/secure of everything you are attempting to secure

I use exchanges but am well aware they can fold at any time. So I operate accordingly.

The owner of the exchange was a criminal before the Bitcoins went 'missing' funny how he is still a criminal with a shed load of bitcoin that people trusted to him with, Myself included but not enough to cry over. The thing what i keep thinking about if it was him 'inside job' then the alts are probably not safe either and there is millions worth of altcoins on there We will soon know if the major dumps start happening before we get news from Bter who seem to be very loud

This is the first I have heard about it and I would think this is something the media would have picked up on

This is the first I have heard about it and I would think this is something the media would have picked up on Using phantom BTC to buy into his own ICO coin then dumping on innocent investors is worse than being a criminal but he is both criminal and scum! Check Bitbay ICO i am not going back and finding links sorry. EDIT: Felt a little bad i found you a link and you will find the rest if you want to with google! http://cointelegraph.com/news/113238/chat-logs-allegedly-show-bter-creating-and-pumping-its-own-coin
