Bitmain themselves brought it back by showing off some BM1384 prototype boards this spring and getting people's hopes up. Of course they slipped some details, some potential timelines, and then apparently dropped the whole thing without a word.
yep, not a first company to do it too (cough-KNC-cough). I also think that some people started buying used S2 in anticipation, so it could have been a double whammy. I almost bought one. S2 probably did spectacularly in some places with very low electricity. Yup, I picked up a couple.

Picked up 5 from a nearby Data Center and sold 4 after eventual news of no upgrade kits. Will run the last one as a heater this winter.

i would go for something quieter like an s3 or s5 with the option fan on 0% better efficiency too u guys still dream of upgrading your s2

BITMAIN promised us. I hope they will keep their words. p.s. fortunately I have an access to free electricity, that's why I haven't sold my S2 yet. p.p.s. how about e-mail attack, like several months ago about GPL terms?..

At this point I would suggest selling the S2. It's just going to go down in value. I recently sold some of my equipment that needed to go to lower priced electricity areas. Worked pretty good I was happy with end result. But I don't see a upgrade kit coming at this point from them. Sometimes promises get broken when it comes to business. I'm guessing they added up cost, and man power guessing to help some through it. And chances are long ago decided to kill project. And it is entirely possible they did a S2 upgrade at some point and kept it internal. That would make sense for their personal data centers. (just speculation).

It might make the most sense to figure out what you could get for the S2 if you sold it today. Use that as a cost figure, and churn the numbers on how long it will take to break-even with 0 running cost. Can you wait that long? Do you want to? I think continuing to wait for Bitmain, or harping at them is a waste of time. They have forgotten about this months ago. The graphic above from Finsky sums it up.

It has been some time sinca ny upgrade kit was sold the only one was and S1 to S3 upgrade kit I wonder when the next one will be available maybe once they refine the S7's chips they will release some sort of smaller miners using the same chips or possibly an upgrade kit I hope at least I still have 1 S2' I held onto just for Winter heating as well other then that its a large heavy paperweight not even worth shipping

The S7 design is very optimized for both shipping (light), and rma (individual hashboards can be sent). I don't see why Bitmain would change its current design, or design S2 upgrade kits for BM1385. It would be nice to see a single board S7; or at least the sale of the aluminum enclosures so we can make our own. There is a much larger market for ~450 watt miners than for ~1300 watt.
