> So it is no fork of another coin.

All coins other than Bitcoin are forks of some other coin.

Just look at any file in ASN source:

Some files have this at the top:
// Copyright (c) 2012-2013 The ascension developers

Some have this:
// Copyright (c) 2009-2012 The Bitcoin developers
// Distributed under the MIT/X11 software license, see the accompanying

Some have this:
// Copyright (c) 2009-2010 Satoshi Nakamoto
// Copyright (c) 2009-2012 The Bitcoin developers

While ASN "About" dialog only has this:
"Copyright © 2015 The ascension developers"

Which is obviously missing some info.

It probably would not make sense to fork ASN straight from Bitcoin, as adding POS is not a trivial task.
I assume it was taken from one of POW+POS coins.
And why I'm asking... Some POW+POS coins have some serious problems and I just want to make sure ASN doesn't.

Thanks

This is just a side note, but there are quite a few altcoins that are not forks of any other coin (in other words, coded from scratch).

Would you mind naming a few?

Just curious.

Sure. I might not have them all precisely right, as I'm not particularly interested in any of these, but anyhow:
Bytecoin, NXT, Ripple, VanillaCoin, Crypti

Not all are open source. There's certainly others I'm not recalling right now (or that I never head of  Cheesy)
Cheers!

Thanks for the info.

VanillaCoin seems to be forked from Sifcoin though:

// Copyright (c) 2009-2010 Satoshi Nakamoto
// Copyright (c) 2009-2013 The Bitcoin developers
// Copyright (c) 2013 The Sifcoin developers
// Copyright (c) 2013 The Vanillacoin developers
// Distributed under the MIT/X11 software license, see the accompanying

And ByteCoin from CryptoNote.

// Copyright (c) 2012-2014, The CryptoNote developers, The Bytecoin developers
//
// This file is part of Bytecoin.

Crypti is a node.js coin, so it is brand new code, yes.

Haven't looked at NXT, Ripple. I think those are a different kind of coins anyways.

Thanks again.

Dev, the OP says:

> Total PoW coins: ~18,366,434.32052889
> Total coins (including PoS): 21,000,000 (estimated)

* ~18,366,434.32052889 should probably be written as "~ 18.3 million", as "~" means "approximately", and "approximately 18,366,434.32052889" sounds kind of funny
* 18,366,434.32052889 is the number of POW + POS coins, not just POW. I am not sure how to calculate the exact number of POW blocks other that writing some custom C++ code in the wallet or some JS in the block explorer.
* Perhaps it is better to word it like this: "Total number of coins after POW phase: 18.36 million" (Info taken from this post: "blocks" : 8501, "moneysupply" : 18357943.47230971)

* What does the "Total coins (including PoS): 21,000,000" mean? Isn't POS supposed to just increase the total number of coins 20% each year indefinitely?

PS: What do these symbols mean: ☀★♫✌♪? (Sun, star, music, ok, music). Some hints to the roadmap details this weekend? :-)

Thanks

Interesting one about VanillaCoin, though as I said, I haven't gotten interested enough to find out more details.
I guess Sifcoin takes place of VanillaCoin in my previous list?  Smiley

On ByteCoin, I am curious, as I thought I had that one right:  Roll Eyes
Isn't ByteCoin the 1st known implementation of the reference CryptoNote protocol? I'm just wondering if the copyright notice is misleading you to think that it's a fork (again, I'm not sure). There's also some CryptoNoteCoin that is a reference implementation, but I think that came out later.

Cheers!
