Every bitcoin user is a victim of the MtGox incident.

Yes... at least 99% of them, if not 100%.

I was one of the most vocal opponents of Mt Gox here before the crash (check my previous posts), as I was supporting BTC-E. But even I had an account with Gox.

Before the crash, people ridiculed me for saying that BTC-E was more secure than Mt Gox. They were arguing that since Mark Karpeles is known to everyone (as opposed to Alexander and Alexei of BTC-E), he will never steal a dime. Look at what happened in the end.

Once a transaction has 6 confirmations, it is extremely unlikely that an attacker without at least 50% of the network's computation power would be able to reverse it.

I had lost around BTC0.01 when Gox crashed. Trust me, it was not a small amount.  Grin

Going by the exchange rates of that time, BTC0.01 was equivalent to $8. That is 8 cans of beer or 4 pizzas... or 8 burgers...

Wow where do you buy your beers? $1 a beers sounds pretty awesome to me Smiley

Mark Karpeles always struck me as a slimy untrustworthy person ready to cash in on the unsuspecting customers at any time.

With the vast numbers of Bitcointalk forum members, is there anyone here who was one of the users of Mt Gox when they went down?

The Mt Gox incident remains to be the biggest 'scam' to date.

I read some stories about it, and I think it has become a popular story to tell for Bitcoiners all over the world.

Anyone here?

A lot of bitcoin was "lost" . I removed most my coins from the exchange about 3 months before it went down. Take a look at these following links:

Some of them seemed to turn Bitcoin haters and/or Shills. I had a discussion with one of them a while ago, and at first he denied having been "burned" by Bitcoin services.

After some deep discussion he acctually revealed that he turned "anti-Bitcoin" after he lost money on MtGox.

You get people who can recover from knocks like this... {depending on how deep the wound was} or people who simply give up, and throw in the towel.

I tip my hat to those people who climbed back on the horse, when they were thrown off.

MtGox has much deeper damage than just the monetary loss.  Sad

Hoping Kraken redistributes the 'found' coins by years end (assuming that legal costs haven't eaten up the 250000 btc worth!). Be happy with 20% of my total lost.

Mark Karpeles always struck me as a slimy untrustworthy person ready to cash in on the unsuspecting customers at any time.

This is good that you could see that but not to great for the 1000's of others that didn't know that he was ready to cash in on unsuspecting investors, I hope you done your part and let people know what was going on before it happened?

Luckily op i was not a victim to the actual robbery but in a way i am still a victim because we are all in this together after all so what hurts the many will also hurt the few even when we arrive late.

Feel really sorry for guys who trusted them with to much and lost nearly everything then watched the price rocket  Angry Shocked

Many people in here got scammed, most of the stories will be down to people who placed trust in gox because vs other exchanges at the time, you knew who ran it, where they opperated from - even seeing inside the offices on various interviews.  They also had a track record of being slow but nobody lost money before.

South Asia.  Grin

Ranges from $0.75 to $2 depending upon the brand.  Grin

Beer is very cheap in some countries. See this:

Don't trust anyone blindly with your coins. Learnt this after losing BTC30.

Yeah, mtgox's fiasco made many old bitcoiners bankrupted, I heard some Chinese whales, every of them has at least thousands or over 10k btc there.

Their good life is damaged by mtgox, this biggest scam in the btc world.

I think many people wanna kill mtgox's owner, he scammed people's money, and he is cursed by thousands of investors.

HE RUINED THEIR LIFE.   Angry Angry

it's a shame. these things like this doesn't only scam people and leave them bankrupt but also ruin the general people's trust.

If you have to kill for money, the question will be... "Are you any better than Mark?"

Leave these people to destroy their own lives....  What did all that money bring to him? You are hated by 1000's of people around the world..... You cannot start a business without people crusifying you for your previous reputation.

I will not trade places with him for any amount of money.....  Grin {Rather be loved than hated}

A picture of him at a bankruptcy press conference showed huge black rings around his eyes. He looked like he had barely slept for months and that the stress was making him seriously ill. I would not want to live like that.

I lost 'only' the personal data I provided them to verify my account. Which is already a lot.
Didn't lose any BTC there.
I was robbed 7.5BTC by coinex.pw exchange two months later.

I guess most will still have at least some coins. Some will have re-bought at high prices, some stayed out of the game, many will have moved on and accepted their fate, and some will have fallen into a depression or worse :/

I lost 3.2 BTC on Gox. Loss of ~$2500 in real dollars. I had invested about $4k in BTC… and took $1500 out… and Gox zeroed out my BTC balance. That was that.

If you buy BTC today - you are likely enriching thieves or hackers. How can you say otherwise considered all the failed wallet services and then the huge Gox loss?

Every bitcoin user is a victim of the MtGox incident. If that thing wouldn't have happened then I think bitcoin wouldn't have come down to $230, it would still have been hovering around to >$1000(I don't care if the hype was created by Willie or it was real).

That's the truth… I was a CambBX user and had started using Gox about two months before the crash… was enjoying the liquidity. All said, the loss did not hurt too bad, but I have stayed out of Bitcoin since that time. I just can't bring myself to buying BTC from the thieves that stole it.
