Hello all,

first I have to apologize, my english is not the best.

I have the problem (well the biggest is that I'm new to this), that I had to save all my most important data due to an trojan...

- I saved the wallet.dat data (and all other wallet data (without ".dat"))
- Synchronization was not completed yet
- so my Bitcoins I transferred from online to my wallet where not in the wallet already

(did buy bitcoins, transferred some of them, "bamm" Virus/trojaner - don't know how the trojan did it to my pc..., this was within 1-2 hours after my first transaction to my (XP WIN) wallet)

- Now I have a new system running, without trojan ;-)
- I tried to restore the wallet.dat ... but it didn't work (synchronization is still running... could that be the problem?)
- The new Bitcoin wallet did not produce a ".dat" data, so I was not sure - where exactly to paste the old wallet.dat - so I tried it in different places where the ".dat" data could and (due to information from the www) should be

All this changed nothing...

I don'T want to loose those Bitcoins... :-(

Could it be, that they are lost, because I saved the wallet too early (without synchronization finished, and without showing up my bitcoins?)....?

Thank you all!

Perhaps someone can tell a beginner how the restore of the *.dat data is made in a proper way!

If you still know the bitcoin address that you sent coins to you can at least check to make sure they are there.

Using blockchain.info  you can paste in the address you sent the coins to. It may not be useful in your recovery process but may help ease your mind about the coins.

Since you had a virus, once you recover the wallet I would highly recommend moving the coins to GOX, or other trusted third party, deleting your wallet and then making a new one. Just in case the trojan copied your wallet.dat.

cheers

If you're not excited by the idea of being an early adopter 'now', then you should come back in three or four years and either tell us "Told you it'd never work!" or join what should, by then, be a much more stable and easier-to-use system.

If it helps anyone and they want to reward me (not expecting anything),
My address is 12fuR1FF753m9E5PKiK6wU7RSHX23WoQng

SOLUTION TO: RESTORING BITCOIN WALLET FILE DOES NOT WORK

Install Bitcoin

(assuming you have a copy of your wallet.dat file in a safe place)

delete the contents of your bitcoin directory (it's a hidden directory so you need to enable view hidden files)

Ubuntu = Home\.bitcoin

Windows XP = C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application data\Bitcoin

Vista/7 = C:\Users\YourUserName\Appdata\Roaming\Bitcoin

Disable all network connections

Start the bitcoin program

Once it's finished loading, close it.

Now copy your wallet.dat file into the bitcoin directory

Enable your internet connections

Start the bitcoin program and it will work

(You can see your old wallet addresses and the blocks start downloading without giving an error.)
