Please proceed to https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.0 to stake your address.

How: Sign a message after quoting the two persons immediately above you.  (Carefully remove the quote of the third person, to avoid it going too long later.)

Why? Very useful to prove ownership of your account, for security, trust, and similar reasons.
Esp. To get your account restored in case it get hacked.

Signing the message should contain : Date, and your account name.

The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

There's another thread with this sort of thing, although it was made after your thread, it might be better just to use that thread as it has much more replies, and saves from people posting in both of them and having them run along side each other later down the line: Stake your Bitcoin address here - Started by Tomatocage

I have a question. What would happen if the person who quotes my signed message happens to hack my account? Couldn't they simply change both my post and the post they used to quote my signed message?

I think it would probably be better to have a thread setup by an admin that has a specific message that needs to be signed and uses custom settings so that posts cannot be edited or deleted (similar to the auction sub forum)

yes it could be happen and actually this could be countered if someone actually make an archive of the address that have been posted in the thread here and here

it would be best if mod could merge both of them together as they have the same intention

SMF has no merge features* and honestly, there wasn't need of this post as there was already one. This should be either moved to Trashcan or Archival.

Ndnhc seems to be created this topic first but since it was missplaced in services section and people wasnt aware of it
On the other hands, TomatoCage's thread got a lot more replies, locking it would be a waste

EDIT : it seems like ndnhc is moving it to TC's thread and will be locking this

Well, that is why it is to be quoted twice by two users.

I also mentioned to sign the message so that someone doesn't accidentally post a bitcoin address that cannot be signed.

Well, that is why it is to be quoted twice by two users.

If someone were to run a scam, it would be trivial to use two accounts to quote a bitcoin address.  Once that account was hacked, both quoted replies could be modified.

This idea will only work if it's in a forum that doesn't allow editing (like Auctions).

Yeah, that is a very good idea. Cheesy

Should I lock this thread, since there is already another thread?

Or should I move it to a board which doesn't allow editing? (Is it allowed?)
(how about collecting signed addresses, once it reaches say 10 pages, move to Auctions or similar board, and lock it forever?)

I think yes.

It will be off-topic.

It will be off-topic but if moderator says okay, you can do it. Smiley

Personally, I think both threads are useless due to the ability to edit.

I PMed my bitcoin address to DefaultTrust some time ago.  That is all Theymos needs to verify it's me.

Right. theymos has said to give PM ID of the message, do you know how to find it? Have you wrote it down? A PM ID isn't needed for theymos as he can check others PMs but adding this will reduce his work and hence, faster recovery.

Moving this to the auction board does not help if your account is compromised. You can move it to somewhere else -> edit -> move it back. I do think that the forum needs to provide a special thread for this very thing though...that can only be edited by admins.
