Title: Solo Mining on an S3 with 51.1 Difficulty - here we go! UPDATE: Block Found!!
Post by: hodedowe on July 23, 2015, 03:17:48 PM
I know everyone says it's a waste, but electricity is cheap and it's only one miner so if you just want to say "you're wasting your time" then please suck on a pickle and take your sour attitude elsewhere  :D. The rest of my miners are working a pool and making good BTC.

So here goes. For the next YEAR I'll be solo mininng with an old S3 (actually have already been for a couple of weeks) running about 418 - 450ghs (seasonally adjusted). As of today the best share is 1,816,484,083. Only 49,000,000,000 off! LOL!

I'll post updates when anything interesting happens or if a block is found. Let's hope I pull that lotto ticket and get the luck of the irish!

Not much electric cost on these, I say just add em to a pi if you have an extra one and roll the dice! It probably won't lead to anything but worth a shot!
havent got a pi to spare :( but i might just run them off my main pc :D

I turned off my miners for the summer except a few usb sticks and one S3+ which I solo mine.  My best share on the S3+ so far is about what you have there, 1.8G.  Good luck!

Code:

s3 can be found for $90 or around that, it's probably better to search on the marketplace, there are many good deal for old miners

I'm getting one of those sidehack stick;
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=995675.0

Maybe i'll use it as a lottery ticket ;D

They use even less electricity so running them on unpowered USB should be a-ok!

Great Idea, you aren't just gambling but supporting the independent miner maker and all the work he has done while not wasting much electric per stick!

Yep! :D

The electricity cost is absolutely minimal and there's future project from Sidehack i would like to see to completion. I guess it's a bit like kickstarting him except i get a little  something from it now.

I could also mine a few cents a week with it i suppose haha xD

This!

I'm thinking the same thing. Let's hope Sidehack can parlay the stick thing into the miner of substance that we all want to buy.

In the meantime, I'm also thinking about running my upcoming Sidehack sticks solo. Gotta play to win...

Hats off to the OP. He's got solid brass clankers, as we say in my family (we're Irish too)!

Thanks for the support guys! Im encouraged to see so many like-minded people out there!  ;D

(side note, I hate that we can't multi-quote on this forum software. Bitcointalk.org should switch to Vbulletin!)

Difficulty change to 52.3 now so it's even tougher but that little antminer, she's still runnin! Paying her dime and taking her chance at about 441gh/s on average. No better share so far (68m since last restart) but that's ok. It'll happen  :D

Got to love the optimism.  Theoretically you could end up minting half the blocks between now and next year - it's unlikely but fingers crossed :)

Other than the fun factor, the reality in numbers is that BTC should be purchased with fiat currently instead of chased with obsolete mining hardware.

2 miners with less than 1TH have solved blocks on solo ckpool. Your chances are extremely low but there is almost no other way to profit with an S3 these days unless your electricity is exceptionally cheap, so solo mining is still a high stakes option.

To all the naysayers, I know it's cool to knock it but solo mining can be VERY profitable. You just have to pay your dime and take your chance. What do you have to lose? A couple of bucks of electricity? Pshaw, you'll probably spend more than that in beer anyway.

Now the question is this, should I keep this thread updated with any additional blocks? Is anyone interested?

My miner buying days are over, thank goodness. I'll be selling off a few BTC to finish paying off some debt then burying the rest in the backyard for a rainy day :D

Thats nice man. Congrats!
Bitcoin mining is so hard now and I am glad that you found a block.
It costs so much and bitcoin price is still low to buy some of miners.
I never had a chance to buy or mine bitcoins. I guess its ok as most of my friends did not too even we trade some on exchange sites.

This was solo, my friend. CK's pool is a solo pool. You don't find a block, you don't get paid. I still mine solo on my own node 99.99% of the time, but with a power loss my bitcoin-core database had to be reindexed (dumbest program ever) so for around two days I was on CK's solo pool. Now I have 25 BTC in my pocket.

I'm selling off about 10 BTC to pay off some debt, pay taxes (biggest hit, Thanks Obama!), and pay God 10%, then the rest is going in the rathole until I need it. I'll consider it a retirement account  :D

Hey that's disgustingly lucky (by my own terms). Congrats. Do you throw alot of hashrate normally at solo mining?
Over here 25BTC would be like 3 years of spendable cash for me.

LOL! It was pretty lucky. I only have one S3 running solo. I did have an S3+ that was set to failover to CK's solo pool as well, but that was an oversight. He should have been hashing on a backup pool instead like the others.

Any of you guys wanting some BTC get over here and buy some of mine (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1141971) so I can pay off my credit card and tell them to kiss my butt!

I have 8.2 out of 10 BTC left!

Sorry, ck! I didn't mean anything by it, just adding to the customer experience for new users, amigo!

Here's the story for anyone interested...Ok, I got two PMs for it so we'll pretend that's alot.  :D

I went outside to sit with my 2 year old while she played in the sandbox. She busied herself moving sand around and playing with the trucks (pink trucks, of course). Then a couple of the neighborhood kids came over to help her build pits and castles. Our sandbox is huge. It's kinda like this, but built out of 12 ft boards.

http://www.willygoat.com/imagescatalog/SportsPlay/243bb.jpg

So as they were playing I walked over and restarted the old S3. It had been "stuck" at 7m "Best Hash" for a while and when that happens I get grumpy with it. "How can 7m be your best hash", I say, "You're a freaking S3! Act like it!" Then I shut him down, counted to 20 seconds, and rebooted him. In a minute he was of and running again. ZOOOOMMMM went his fans....

I wandered back to see tha the kids had caught a toad (not a golliwog, a real toad lol) and were building a pit to put him in as a "house".
When they're babies like this they don't jump very fast is why the little kids could catch him.

http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/grapevine/attachments/wildlife-gardening/4641d1210106704-baby-toad-toadcropped.jpg

We spent the rest of the afternoon getting sandy feet and eating fried chicken (oh mama!) then I sent the other kids home. I scooped up my little kiddo and took her in for a bath. After peeling her out of sandy, wet clothes and scrubbing her down we spent another 20 minutes playing the "Where's the baby" and other silly towel games. (Throw the towel, dry my hair goofy, etc) .

https://www.tesco-baby.com/content/uploads/2013/12/b_bbd_peekaboo_am_L-520x292.jpg

Finally we settled down for dinner. Her with carrots and turkey and me with a big fat turkey leg and a hard cider. Nom nom nom.

http://i57.tinypic.com/i44f45.jpg

After laying her down for a well earned snooze after a good, laid back day with her Daddy I went to check on my experiment......and spit Pepsi all over my lap. "WOOHOO! It happened!!!!" I blurted, then slapped a hand over my mouth. Uhh.....

I just stared at it for 5 minutes, then I went crazy looking for confirmation. I wasn't able to figure out CK's site so I went to my wallet and poked around in there for a pending transaction. It wasn't showing up. I then found where CK said it arrived after 100 confirmations so I held my breath a bit and waited. As soon as I saw CK mention my wallet address I was uncontainable. I hopped on here and broke the news that solo mining IS profitable, it DOES happen, and in my opinion everyone and their mother should have an S3 sitting under their flower garden  ;D

And the rest is history. I sold all 10 BTC I needed to sell inside of a few hours, mostly for Paypal. Here's looking forward to the next one, never give up hope guys!

Haha nice story. I bet you got some grey hair while waiting for confirmation.

Sadly you winning the lottery doesn't mean solo mining is profitable per se. xD

Still enjoy your win and maybe i'll put a sidehack's stick on it solo ck's and we'll see what happen (or not happen xD)

oh i didn't know that there was a solo pool, he must have a big hash to run in solo, but still if you're able to join the pool, this isn't solo anymore, and like i said if you were to running your own client and try solo, you will not be abele to find a block in the same way, and so easily

Congrats on hitting that block over on ck.'s pool!  I still hold out hope that my little U2s will hit for me some day, but I know statistically I've got very little chance of it happening.  I was part of a group that pooled our resources and threw some pretty decent hash at the solo pool for a while and we hit two blocks.  Was fun, but certainly not as nice as seeing 25BTC appear in my wallet for hitting it on my own ;)

I sure did. It was an exciting 5 minutes  :o  I'm of the mind that solo mining is getting a bad rap because of all the naysayers. "It's too hard" - they say. If Socrates had said that we wouldn't have society as we know it. How many of those naysayers have tried it recently?

oh i didn't know that there was a solo pool, he must have a big hash to run in solo, but still if you're able to join the pool, this isn't solo anymore, and like i said if you were to running your own client and try solo, you will not be abele to find a block in the same way, and so easily

Hash size doesn't matter in a SOLO pool. It's just like mining on your own client, only you don't have to store the entire blockchain locally. Again, I normally run my own client but due to a power outage my client had to be reindexed. The block was found when my miner rolled to my failover (secondary pool) which was CK's, to make sure they were still SOLO mining and the experiment continued uninterrupted.

Going to solo CPU mine on my old Pentium 4.
See you in a million years!
Okay, I decided to throw my 2 S3+'s at solo.ckpool now for a few months, and posting here for good luck!  ;D

Congrats on the block find! 25BTC
I found an old 333 mh/s USB eruptor, I'll try this... yolo. See you in 1.2 million  years.

All it takes is one ticket, my friends! Good luck! Please do post your results, including best hash since restart, anything interesting, pics of your babies in their setup, etc!

U2's have hit blocks before. One problem I think is that people get impatient and unplug after a week thinking Ugh. I'll never win. If I had given up after a week I would have never got that block. My S3 only kicks out 390-402 GHS but he picked a winner!

Just read your post!

Congrats!

Thanks for the support Ian! You guys here are half the reason I kept going on this project. And now for a little update....Best hash since restart is only 82,418,370. Walkin' the dog, walkin' the dog!

you can solo mine with s1, s2, s3 but you have a stratum server  ;)
http://www.btcmining247.com/pool-home/ is a new bitcoin mining pool. we mine 24 hours 7 days week a so come on miners mine with us

This isn't true anymore. You can edit the cgminer configuration file to add your btc address manually or do what I did and just download Kano's updated software (doesn't show diff anymore though), and just add your btc address in the provided field.

:D

I ran my block erupter 333 mh/s miner for a few months at cks pool on my HTPC.. hey its on 24/7 anyway right?

its more like see you at the heat death of the universe.

well another reason was to setup and test .bats and .conf setting and make sure the latest cgminer works.. and I miss that dos box in my taskbar :)

my two sidehack compacs will mine there for literally years.. years at 12 gh/s must be close the same as 400 gh/s for months right? :D

Ol' Sparky is going down today so I can update his heatsink with arctic silver paste. He deserves it :)

To do this you have to turn off your miner and unplug all his plugs. Then grab your trusty Arctic Silver tube. I chose this because it's friggin huge and has enough to do all the chips plus several cpus.

http://i62.tinypic.com/1zfk8qu.jpg

Grab your trusty bitcoin mining bad boy and set him on a smooth, flat surface.

http://i59.tinypic.com/qrlrer.jpg

Flip your little buddy over on his side and remove the five screws on one side, then the five screws on the other.

http://i62.tinypic.com/2z88934.jpg

Then just pull off his back. He won't mind, it doesn't hurt. Kinda like getting a haircut  :D

http://i58.tinypic.com/24y74e9.jpg

This is what it looks like under there. Scaaarryyy! Don't touch the sides, BRRRRRPPPP!!!!

http://i59.tinypic.com/2lvd8qc.jpg

If you flip him back on his side and tickle his belly you'll see this huge aluminum heat sink. That's coming off.

Now take out the four screws holding it on. There are springs under each screw so take them out slowly or they might just SPROING! across the room  :o

http://i60.tinypic.com/3308h3n.jpg
http://i61.tinypic.com/fn65x4.jpg

With the screws out it's just held on with the crappy thermal paste that was put on it in hit or miss fashion from the factory. Pull downward (toward your miner's case bottom) to break it loose without hurting the chips underneath. Then push it over to one side and lift it out at an angle.

http://i60.tinypic.com/2yuivr9.jpg

Now flip that heatsink over. It has little spots of goo on it. Wipe all of those off with a paper towel. If you want to get crazy with it you can use alcohol (not beer) on the towel to really get it clean.

http://i60.tinypic.com/1493zv5.jpg
http://i62.tinypic.com/2edp2yd.jpg

Now look at the board the heatsink was on. See all those little chips? Some of them have thermal paste on them too. They're ALL supposed to have paste, but hey, it was a rush job I guess! Clean it off too.

If you use ALCOHOL on them please wait till they dry before continuing on.

http://i59.tinypic.com/zwnasw.jpg
http://i58.tinypic.com/2z7n79w.jpg

Now grab your handy dandy Arctic Silver and squirt a dollop on the top of the chip. On computer processors you're only supposed to use a very small amount, scrap it off with a piece of rigid plastic, and then attach the heatsink to it. On these chips they're so wavy and the heatsinks are manufactured to such poor standards that you can leave a good amount on there to fill in the huge gaps. The heatsink will squish out what it doesn't need.

http://i59.tinypic.com/204j7t.jpg

Now call a friend over to hold a flashlight for you. You're about to need it. Ok, slip your heatsink back in but DONT LET IT TOUCH THE PASTE ON THE CHIPS YET. Remember you have to work it in the board area one side at a time.

http://i58.tinypic.com/rmmav9.jpg

Remember the kid with a flashlight? While you hold that heatsink suspended in the air over the chips have the kid shine the light down the screw hole here so you can slowly lower it down on the chips reasonably precisely so as not to smear thermal paste from heck to breakfast. Align it with the screw holes as you go, obviously.

http://i61.tinypic.com/f4eoep.jpg

Now put one screw in gently, don't screw it all the way down because it'll move the heatsink around.

http://i62.tinypic.com/2crvarp.jpg

I like to put the next screw in on the opposite side to make sure everything is aligned. Now remember, these miners are pretty well designed but put together with crappy parts. These screws don't need to be super-torqued down. You will break them (good luck getting them back out if you do!) so just screw them back in barely snug.

http://i57.tinypic.com/343k9k6.jpg

Do the same with the other side.

Now slip the cover back on him. You're almost done!

http://i61.tinypic.com/11sno28.jpg

And go around his sides putting his screws back in the case, remembering to tighten them only snugly. They don't need to be very tight or you'll break them as well. That's it! Tada! Go plug your new, harder working bad-boy back in and let him earn you 25 BTC! :D

Good luck everyone!

Wondering, Im not a pro but I think you but a lot of artic silver on 1 chip. I dont think it make a problem but you could probably save some.  ;)

Hey Valkir! Well yes, there's a lot on each chip and I could probably have saved some but if you lay a straight-edge on the heatsinks and across the chips you'll see there is a huge amount of play in the distance between the chips and heatsink. Using a larger dollop (never do this with a computer cpu) you can use the squishy method and have it fill in the larger gaps along with the small ones without physically measuring each chip's gap. Yes, on some you get an overflow but it doesn't hurt the board. It might even transfer superficial heat from the board and solder points to the heatsink for dissipation. Less heat = longer lasting hashing! :)

Good luck with your miner! Are you using an ASIC too or usb/gpu/cpu mining?

Little update on my S3, Best hash since restart is a measly 5,536,611. I restarted 4 hours ago because I wanted to move him to a slightly cooler area.

Yes, on some you get an overflow but it doesn't hurt the board. It might even transfer superficial heat from the board and solder points to the heatsink for dissipation.
Most people that redo the thermal paste (make sure it's non-conductive!) do so specifically to remove the overflow.  Thermal paste is designed to fill microscopic gaps between a chip and heat sink, it's not meant to bridge large air gaps.  If your heat sink is that warped you should probably look to thermal pad (3M makes some nice ones) between the chip and heat sink - trying to use thermal paste like caulk is not effective or recommended.

Best hash since restart is a measly 5,536,611.
10^6 to 10^7 are pretty normal shares to an S3, 10^8 happen frequently.  I've only seen a >10^9 share on mine twice.

Good point, Mikestang! Normally I would agree, but Arctic Silver Ceramique can bridge moderate gaps and due to it's aluminum and zinc oxide composition it provides better thermal conductivity between the chip and the sink than a thermal pad. I should have mentioned that you shouldn't bridge larger gaps with normal everyday paste. They claim 2 - 10c better cooling over metallic pads and pastes. I see 8c on CPU chips I build. I didn't measure the temps before/after with my little S3.

The only drawback is that it stays semisolid for the first 2 days or so until the formula settles into position. But some pastes and pads re-liquify with each cycle of the chip so it could be worse! :D

Since you hit a block with an old miner, why don't I do the same? (Even if mine are two old gridseeds that produces 10gh/s each) Since it's only stocked in the drawer, why don't I take the chance of the lifetime too? Congrats on finding a block, hope I find mine soon! :D

This is awesome to see that a block can be solo mined still with so little hash. My self since I just started getting into mining, I am only running a s3 and a s1 but both are on pool's. I have always been told don't do it solo because you wont make anything. I am glad to see some one prove them wrong even if it wasn't me. Congratz and I am glad to see you are supporting a Charity with some of you winnings!

Again Congrats, Make me want to start solo mining hehe.

Well, to be fair, this doesn't really prove them wrong: no one will deny that people win the lottery regularly despite the odds, but everyone knows beforehand it's only a gamble - potentially, a very profitable gamble but, if you can afford it, and you're into gambling, why not? :P

I also have six miners working on a pool. This was a little 365 day experiment I thought I'd run on an S3. As of today it has paid for itself and the other miners, plus much more. I'm curious to see how it'll end up. You never know!

Actually any time you mention "solo mining" everyone will tell you it's not possible. Just NOT POSSIBLE unless you have X number of Petahashes at your disposal like the large chinese firms. People forget that it's a lottery, not a grind. All it takes is one share and boom, you're a winner. Even a little block erupter USB stick could get a hit.

Sure, you could put your hashes to a pool but really how much of that 25.x btc do you want to share with a pool?

Of course it helps to have some Irish Blood as another poster mentioned :D

Whoah! That's unusual. Are you rebooting your machines? I only reboot mine about twice a week or so. The common misconception is that you can't get high shares with smaller machines, but those same people will turn around and tell you it's a lottery. Which is a contradiction lol. You can't be tied to low shares and also be in a lottery system.

Statistically even your CPU will eventually provide such as share as well, or even one that solves a block... or it could produce it in the very next second.  Of course, you've got a far better chance of it happening when that stick is hashing a thousandfold faster than the CPU is :)

Congrats on mining a block their at 25 BTC not even a month into it and indeed smashed it. Its all about luck to be honest and hitting that magic number for producing a winning ticket. How do you have this set for solo mining as every time I have come to trying solo mining by setting up client it always rejects them or finding out that I have too much power going though. Is their any pools set for doing this kind of thing where can just point to some solo pool operation or will have to dig out 2nd pc make pool with it somehow?

Just point your hash to solo.ckpool.org.  It can handle whatever you throw at it ;)

Because I like to support Bitcoin, I run a full node and not that devaluing XT version either. FULL CORE from Bitcoin.org (https://bitcoin.org/en/download). I set it up on a Windows machine then in the data directory I have a text file named bitcoin.conf. Inside that file is this:

Code:
rpcuser=bitcoinrpc
rpcpassword=OMGlongPassHere
minrelaytxfee=0.00000001

Then I start Bitcoin Server with this shortcut (right click on a shortcut to btc core, properties, then put this whole for the TARGET)

Code:
"C:\Program Files\Bitcoin\bitcoin-qt.exe" -server -RPCALLOWIP=192.168.1.10 -RPCALLOWIP=192.168.1.11 -RPCALLOWIP=127.0.0.1 -RPCALLOWIP=192.168.1.12 -RPCPORT=4928 -checklevel=2

Of course if you have different IP addresses for your miner you'll need to change the RPCALLOWIP, and you'll need to change the RPCPORT if you use a different port.

Finally allow incoming connections in your firewall (Go to Advanced in Windows firewall, or Allow Ports in most other firewall programs).

That's it. Mine away :)

I use CK's pool as a backup for those times when I lose power and need to reindex my core.

Will have to give that a bash when I get me other system back up and running. Thanks for the details as some of it I did miss out last time think my problem was accepting incoming connections. Just gone over to CK and going to look into it as just pointed to nicehash as found they do the same thing their and give details on submitted shares. Going to continue the adventure with you see if I can get something with 200GH less luck on hitting but who knows. Got be in it to win it :P

Another little update. With an early winter we're seeing a LOT more hashrate from the globe. Expect the difficulty to skyrocket this next time. :(

Best share right now is 30,879,119. It ain't great, but he's still chuggin along! Don't forget, he's got the luck of the Irish!

No, and I won't. This is a 1 year experiment with a single Antminer S3 to disprove the oft espoused theory that solo mining is dead.

It has been running since the first post, as of today that's 32 days. Off time averages about 30 minutes weekly. That includes all restarts, power outages, my fiddling with things out of boredom, and bumping the power supply plug accidentally from time to time and knocking the paperclip out of it.  :D

Solo mining is dead, but even a dead horse get's lucky once in a while (isn't that how the saying goes?).

That being said, with my electric rate all I can do all summer is solo mine and cross my fingers, so it will never be dead to me.

My difficulty is 54 billion because I mine against the Bitcoin Core to support the network. See my earlier post on how to set it up. When I mine against the backup pool, CK's pool, it's 1000.

Setting your difficulty isn't necessary. It's done automatically from the software you're mining against. Don't get hung up on it. It's a non-issue.

You don't need to change any files. You just change the shortcut to add arguments (all those -RPCALLOW, etc lines) and add the bitcoin.conf file.

You do have to download all the blocks before you can mine against it. That takes me about a week.

That's the closest hash to the network difficulty your machine(s) has solved so far.  You need a best share > network difficulty and submit it first to successfully solve a block.

When true solo mining (against your own node) the only share you will see submitted is a share greater than network difficulty.  Otherwise, it's just cosmetic so you can see that your miners are, in fact, working.

you are puttign to much hash for solo, i mean how much energy are you using for hoping for one block?.

i have an s3 coming so i prentend only to have a s3 mining solo rest will keep on mining.

You need to make something if you got money on the machines and wasting energy for " nothing ".

I say that 14th is alot for hoping on solo , put one machine for lottery and get some cash for the rest   :)

You can never put "too much" energy into solo mining. Remember, all it takes is one hash!

I really get a kick out of reading you guys running solo rigs and supporting the cause. "They said it couldn't be done. We proved them wrong!"

Another little update. I was bleary eyed this morning and opened my miner's page to look at the shares. He said, "Best Share 562,331,786" and because I was tired I read three more placeholders in that number. So something like this:

562,331,786,948

And I thought...Whoah! This guys the best miner in the world! But then I blinked and saw "FoundBlocks = 0" and had to re-peek at that share number again. oh well, it was an exciting 30 seconds! LOL!

You can also monitor the pool's thread or your miner's status. Maybe there's a way to get a mail notification but you'll have to ask in ck pool solo's thread.

That depends on your electricity cost, budget, housing location. Give me/us more information and you will get a recommendation. The S4 isint bad, just the price its listed at is. And unless you're looking for a lottery, you will have to mine in a pool.

I'm living in sweden
my electricity cost it 0.08 dollar/kwh
I have also 10kwh Solar array
my budget are little open depending on what recomendation people give but max 1200 dollars.
Internet connection are 100/100 mbit.
Something more you need to know?

Most likely you would be better off to mine in a pool with the S4.  It's not a super efficient miner.  I would solo mine with something smaller then 1400 watts.

You could do it.  But most of us I think would suggest against it.

Not really 0.08 is a bit high and kind of in limbo right now with the S7 coming in but being too expensive and the S5 soon to be devalued. Depending on how much extra power you get from your solar array, then you could go for S4/S5 if obtained at a good price.

I'm not sure whats your true expense is on your solar array but if you have wasted electricity that you dont get to use. Go for it. There's also SP20 units and such. S5 is just easier to quiet down a bit.

are s4 better then s5?

if I go for s5 should I mine in a pool and wish one?
and how much bitcoins will the s5 give me? dont need bo be exact just normal nr

More or less. I personally got more bang for buck getting a S4, on a GH/$ basis. However the S5 has 0.5~J/GH and the S4 is 0.7~J/GH. Which means per GH the S4 is less efficient. (Cost more to run per GH)

This is why what you pay for your electricity make all the difference. Over here i pay a flat rate up to a limit. So i pay nearly nothing for 2 kW, but the rate is 3~ to 5~cents per kWh for under and above 30kWh per day respectively, for residential and 3 to 2 cents per kWh for big industrial.

0.08 cents per KW is fairly decent, its just below the profit line but you can still make some decent cash, also his solar panels would cancel out a large portion of the probelm

I'm not sure what you're really talking about, but for the prospect of mining in your house, that is pretty inaccurate. "Free electricity" certainly beat cheap electricity but mining on cheap electricity is very profitable.

Now, if you have wifi and a way to generate air flow to dump the heat outside, go right ahead. But i would recommend using your own wifi, otherwise you might find it pretty hard to manage your miner.

Any wallet that is controlled by another source (online, another person/company) can steal your bitcoins. There is no recourse. You lose.
They can also go down from time to time making it impossible for you to get to your coins. You should only use a local wallet like multibit or armory and encrypt your wallet.

If you really want to be safe, research armory cold storage.

Just start with something cheap. A small stick, gpu mining alt coins, maybe even CPU mining.

Use a software wallet, personally i use Multibit for BTC. SPV wallets are certainly the way to go for a new comer. Do a few transaction, figure out the value. Etc. Get a feel for it. I started my mining venture with a 560 ti on scrypt a while back.

That could be a nice cheap way to start, but have patience. It took me a month to mine a block and that was lucky. Most people quit after 1 or 2 weeks.

As for alt coins, I recommend against any alt unless you're just trying to play around. Alt coins are like dog food. Sure you can eat it, but it tastes like poop on a cracker. Bitcoins are like steak. Takes longer to prepare right, but so worth the wait.  :D

Best how? They're loud, the SP20s are similar efficiency to S3. Then the bigger units are every louder and run on 240v on huge stuff. Its truly aimed at data center.

no sp20 is similar to s5 so you are way over the sea. the sp20 efficiency is really good, you can't compare the s3 to sp20 is like comparing a lada to mercedes.

Yes you two are both "Outdated". You are probably referring to the monster SP35  that does 5TH~... for 3.5kW. Now bitmain has 5TH~ for 1200W in a smaller unit.

And to be fair, 3 antminer S5 was still better than one SP35, size wise together they are smaller, less noise, take less power and cheaper.

You can place orders for it now and Bitmain doesn't do vaporware. But regardless i said S7 because thats the most current, but the S5+ fit the bill just as well, is already released and sold out AND also have better specs than the SP35.

Antminer S5+:
Hash Rate: 7722 GH/s ą5%

So regardless, Spoondoolies are NOT the biggest units.

Any more arguments? :)

Hey guys! Time for another update. Best share is up to 192,389,014 since last restart. I got bored with being in the 20m range for 2 days so I turned him off, waited 20 seconds, then turned him back on. 24 hours later he pulled the 192k. :D

As they say in Game of Thrones, Winter is coming so after next week I'll be moving the farm to my shop, including my solo buddy. They really warm it up in there during the cold months so I'm able to work in comfort and make a little more BTC in the process.

well its amazing to know that there still exist some solo miners into the mining process, wont make you rich but will get an income ,that can turn into profit with some work.

Nice to see this still going :) Good luck for all who are still mining!
4 GHS and still going strong, best share so far is 744425, which isnt too bad on 2 usb miners. hoping to get my hands on a u3 sometimes soon

Somehow trying with a S1 here. Best share is 2,847,775. Quite far from the target.

I have an extra U3 I don't need, PM me if you want to buy it.  I can sign a message with a link to a screen shot of it hashing or something if need be.

Right now I only have 6 usb sticks going for a whopping 12GH/s solo lottery mining.  This will increase when my gekkoscience compac sticks show up.

Hopefully it will cool down here eventually and I can fire up some of the "big guns" again.  ;D

well mine with usb for  is those profitable?I know energy consumed is lower then miners, but is it profitable did you made the calculation about it?

Well, its not any different to calculate than bigger miners. The math is the same. Cost of hardware/profit per day. If you get a 6 gh stick for 25 cents and you pay nothing-ish for electricity then you can ROI it in a few months. So is it "Profitable"? Yes. You will totally profit on your 25 cents once or twice over a year...

Yeah. You would need tons of sticks to make significant money but its not exactly impossible. Imo Stick miners (don,t confuse with USB, big miners can be plugged into USB too) are more like toys, units for testing, or such.

But typically USB sticks are very bad $/GH ratio so its typically not a good profitable investment.

You mentioned paying nothing or renew energy, soo why would someone with such potencial buy such thing that will allow to roi but wont get more then we could get with faucets or others ways to collect bitcoins?I doubt any big farm with huge low cost energy and solar will invest some bucks into those sticks instead a better equipment .

I suppose it depend on how big you're talking about. For actually big farms, they usually have sections of a specific miner since its easier to manage all the same miner than a bunch of different miners rag tagged together.

However for 100-300THs in someone's garage, whatever you get your hands on at good GH/$ would do. Me i'm even smaller than that so its easy for me to use different hardware but anything bigger than that. I can't imagine they would want to get small units or different units. Indeed.

But for solo mining, this is exactly what you should use.

This thread is awesome by the way.  So may people say its not worth it to solo mine. I just think they are impatient.  You dont make much mining in a pool anyways.  And the electricity you use is really minimal.

Why not draw a lotto ticket and see if you can win.

Iv been thinking about it and I may just do this.  As I do waste a load of money on the lottery anyways.  And coffee.   lol

Nothing wrong with that! I've been stuck at 600k as a best share for days before. If I get stuck at a low best share for more than a few days I restart now and watch it climb from 1000 up. It probably doesn't help, but it makes me feel like I'm doing something  ;D

However for 100-300THs in someone's garage, ....

That's a ton of TH for a garage. I bet it's toasty in there!

Amen to the coffee bill.  ;D

And we all wonder why we have anxiety and heart issues, am I right? I say go for it. Most people quit after 2 weeks because when you're watching the machine it feels like two months. Just turn it on, let it ride, and think of it as a fun little project just like I did here.

As for Sparky, which is what we're calling my lucky little S3 as of today, his best share is only 54,505,143 after a grueling 5 day run in heavy heat. I'm making excuses for him but I'm going to restart his little butt tonight LOL! Nothing special to report yet I guess. Just chugging along...

Sure but then again, its your garage, so nothing prevents you from having the exhaust from the miners go straits outside, getting rid of absolutely all the heat, though not the noise ^_^".

If you keep it close, you would only need a couples of units to make it "toasty" thus unless its a cold winter, you better figure out a way to dump the heat regardless of how big your setup is.

Meanwhile 20 S7's is not that much. I just hope the construction is thick enough to block the sound from entering the rest of the house!

That's true. You'd have to be good at brickwork etc to plug up the hole when you move unless you vent it out underneath the rolling door. It's an interesting thought. I guess you could put glass in it and make a window!

Solo is currently like strategy game,at the moment ,with solar energy you can start your strategy investment. If you will be able to roi,yes you will but how long and how many days or weeks will last...i had almost bought a miner but i invested those and i own more bitcoin then if i were mining i suppose.

Coins are pretty cheap right now. I'd say buying is great at anything under $300 if you intend to buy and hold, or "hodl" as the kids say  :D

Well now we can choose on the time of firsts miners who enter in the begining of th process had earned some bitcoins ,on the time of the 1000 dollars and above 500dollars people invested into equipment dreaming to roi in 2 months or less, and well too many bitcoin mined and price went down in a short time, now new bitcoiners can choose to buy them or to mine them as looks bitcoin is stable on the 200 mark and able to reach 300 .

Because of this thread I put one of my miners to work doing the old yolo solo. Just this morning actually.
Three chips aren't working right now....I suppose taking it apart and re-doing the thermal paste is an option?

No, that won't help for anything other than thermal conveyance.  I've had chips show as 'x' on my S3, I usually just power off the machine for a few minutes and fire it up again and they have always come back.

I'll try that out, I just purchased them used. Most are ok, there are a couple miners that show a couple x's a piece, nothing major I assume. How do I know if the chips are over heating? They all have temps of around 39C.

if I count with the array then I down at 0.025 but it also depent how strong the dollar are to swedish kr
how much do you pay for one kwh in dollar?

when I looking in the diffrent antmine s4 have a higher gh/s then s5?
are s4 better then s5?

if I go for s5 should I mine in a pool and wish one?
and how much bitcoins will the s5 give me? dont need bo be exact just normal nr

That depends on your electricity cost, budget, housing location. Give me/us more information and you will get a recommendation. The S4 isint bad, just the price its listed at is. And unless you're looking for a lottery, you will have to mine in a pool.

Okay
I'm living in sweden
my electricity cost it 0.08 dollar/kwh
I have also 10kwh Solar array
my budget are little open depending on what recomendation people give but max 1200 dollars.
Internet connection are 100/100 mbit.
Something more you need to know?

Not really 0.08 is a bit high and kind of in limbo right now with the S7 coming in but being too expensive and the S5 soon to be devalued. Depending on how much extra power you get from your solar array, then you could go for S4/S5 if obtained at a good price.

I'm not sure whats your true expense is on your solar array but if you have wasted electricity that you dont get to use. Go for it. There's also SP20 units and such. S5 is just easier to quiet down a bit.

Daarn, You may not like it but - my friend - you don't know enough to start buying anything just yet. I'm sorry, but I want you to be successful and you won't be if you just jump in with both feet and eyes closed. The only thing you should do now is read, research, and learn. A good start is reading the first 2 pages of the forum here

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=14.0

And here

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=81

And finally the first two pages here

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=40.0

This should take you 2 days if you stick with it. A week if you like to sleep. :)  After that you will be able to ask good questions and we will be glad to help! Good luck!

P.S. I envy you living in Sweden. Beautiful country and beautiful women :)

Thank you for the additional info. Need to brush up asap. Good source of info, methinks. Now I won't be that damn n00b down the road.

The year's not done yet so yep, still mining. Difficulty is getting insane but like we've said many times "All it takes is one share". You could get it with a block erupter or CPU mining.

I made a crazy ROI already with the first 25 BTC mined so I'm not sweating it. Best share since I posted last was around 4 billion. Since that time I've been playing with Eloipool, trying to get it to work for me. Sparky went offline for a day playing with that, but it never worked so I put him back to work full time again. His best share right now is..... 253,120,154. Pretty good, but not a block. ;)

This thread isn't about profitability or share count, he is solo mining so the only share that matters is one that is greater than network difficulty.

When solo mining is your miner on non stop for the full year or did you reboot in between to clear HW errors. does rebooting add to your time  or does ckpool remember where you were last

What do you mean, add to your time? There is no progress toward finding a block in the first place, therefore it does not matter if you restart the miners all the time.

Solo mining its like a lottery, If you have more power you will have more numbers, but isn't about time. You can have good luck and solve it in your first month or it can take more than one year.

You could always try renting some hash and hoping to hit... might be a cheaper option for you than purchasing a rig.

Fantastic story OP! You realize that you are now a celebrity? Also, you have done for solo mining what no one else has done before - Giving hope! I am still looking at getting my first miner, the reason this decision was delayed this long was only because i insist on solo mining if i get a miner, which was not acceptable to the wife... explaining to her that potential earnings are either 100% or zilch and electricity cost going out of my pocket while this happened, was like trying to get pigs to fly. However, your story here has helped me convince the wife, especially because she saw that you put your tithes and we are very happy for you my friend! Here's to hope that i get my S3 soon! :)

Hey everyone! Some of you have heard of Nicehash, a hash renting place that lets you rent mining power and point it wherever you want. You probably know I'm also very much against rented hash because of the opportunity for milking your money while not paying anything.

At any rate, Nicehash had a bug in their code and instead of giving the guy a partial payout and bug-finding fee they shafted him and just sent him his 3btc hashing fee back.  >:(

As a help to him the Sparky Experiment will be mining for "Fredi" (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=763510.msg12851884#msg12851884) from today until next Sunday, November 11th, at midnight. If a block hits for Sparky by then we'll be sending 15.5 BTC to Fredi with well wishes and goodwill.

To see the thread, click on Fredi above. Sparky was restarted right after posting this thread. Best hash right now is 47,028  ;D

Good luck fellow experimenters!

I know I'm behind on responses guys. I'm sorry! My time has been eaten up lately like a fat man at a barbecue.

I've put together a "solo pool" server packaged up on a VMware machine for home use. Basically you turn it on and point your miners at it and it'll handle all the pool-side stuff so you don't have to mess with changing your miner's soft/firmware.

Here's a link. You need about 100GB of free space (for the blockchain).

With bitcoin price through the roof (and temps cool enough I actually had to turn my heater on tonight) I've turned my S3 back on as a solo mining dream.  Here's to hoping I can duplicate the success of this thread!  8)

Mine is oc'd just a little to run about 500GH/s.  It has pulled over 1G shares before, so all I have to do is cross my fingers and hope for 60x past results, lol.

It wasn't so long ago that an S3 and an S5 would have been a powerhouse of hash. I think you have a great chance!

First, Who cares? Mining on a pool so you can collect 0.000000001 btc vs collecting 25 BTC mining solo. Hmm.
Second, I'd guess you could make about $0.02 USD per day at a pool.

Hi Folks,

I stopped my nearly brandnew S3+ miners at BTC passing 400US$ (S1 -> S3 selfmade Upgrade),
though I have 2 pay high energy fees.

With the winter comming in, it got reactivated,
and the better one (~478GHs) is participating in this S3 Solo game (the other @nicehash).

... after 16 days, I got a respectable best share,

{"hashrate1m": "338G", "hashrate5m": "434G", "hashrate1hr": "447G", "hashrate1d": "460G", "hashrate7d": "433G", "lastupdate": 1449149542, "workers": 1, "shares": 178751257, "bestshare": 749187554.6695118, "bestever": 749187554}

but no goal yet.

... I will keep it running for about 120 days.

:D PanneKopp

P.S. I do not believe, it us useful to permanently reboot the miner - strong wishes do not provide good luck ^^

Welcome to the party, PanneKopp! Very respectable bestshare so far right there. The reboot has to do with the slowing of hashrate occasionally or changing of settings. But (and this is probably just mental) if my little Sparky doesn't pull decent shares after a week he's getting a reboot to make me feel better.  ;D

Update: Sparky's best share right now is 674,868,887. Not too shabby considering one of his chips is wonky and X's out after about 10 minutes.

Try powering it off for 5 minutes and then firing it up again.  Sometimes I get an X and this always has cleared it up.

Yeah, that works for a little bit. But it always comes back within 20 minutes. I've learned to live with it. Sometimes it's a -, sometimes an X. I just gave up on that little sucker. If the reboots from cold state and new high dollar thermal paste won't keep that one going it's just a bad chip.

This is the closest I could find to what you're asking, it's not a guide for creating a solo mining pool, but it will get you started.
Luckily it's still up to date I believe.

Clock settings nor resetting work on Sparky. He just has a bad chip. I've run the gammit on repair options, even re-applying thermal paste to his heat sinks. He just refuses to fire that one chip up for more than a few minutes. I've learned to live with it.

You can use 1 for the two. The "sprinkling" of additional data each miner puts in to generate different hashes keeps them from working on the same results. Good luck!

I've got a self hosted pool all set up on Ubuntu as a virtual machine here - I'll be posting another upgrade to it this week though so you might hold off if you go that route.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1235123

Once you fire it up and configure it you just have to point your miners to it and off it goes.

I'm still comparing different options at the moment, I'm set on getting an s3, it's just a matter of finding one at the right price with relatively cheap shipping.
Import tax is also something I need to factor in possibly (am from Europe).

{"hashrate1m": "2.93T", "hashrate5m": "2.85T", "hashrate1hr": "2.28T", "hashrate1d": "215G", "hashrate7d": "31.9G", "lastupdate": 1449919741, "workers": 6, "shares": 4519302, "bestshare": 22392908.006607991, "bestever": 22392908}

Good luck with the solo pool, nice little setup you have there, does it get hot in the room?

Yes it gets pretty hot, I have a window fan blowing in cold air.  If it wasn't winter time I'm not sure what I would do about the heat.

Makes me want to give solo mining a try but the odds would be against me ever finding a block :(, Congrats on your block.

well its amazing to know that there still exist some solo miners into the mining process, wont make you rich but will get an income ,that can turn into profit with some work.

It is just like playing the lottery. I many time did your miner spent mining before it found a Block? I take it that it took a long long time. Is it feasable?

55T is not a lot, I have seen people rent 1P and not hit!!  You can rent from NiceHash or MiningRigRentals

Nice hit! Is ck's solo pool in the US or Europe?  I've never used NiceHash or MiningRigRentals. Which one is better?

ck has a pool here in the US and one in Germany.  As for rentals, I have heard good and bad about both.

well congrats.... I have 3 s3s (24/7) and a s5 (every couple days) pointed there. I woke up the other morning and saw in cgminer some one hit, so being excited I logged into everything and it wasnt me. It would have brightened my world, the past few months have been rough since my father died a day before my birthday. Maybe I will go check out the rentals, I could use some good vibes.

well yes because it is for few hours i guess, and even with 1 peta you need 4 days on average to hit a block, then you have to factor the diff increase...

Cool to see that you found one so fast with 55T, still pretty lucky I'd say :)
I've been renting like 2T for the last 14 days on Betarigs and no luck yet sadly.

On a side note: are there any other mining rig rental sites that you or someone else could recommend? Been having issues with deposits on Betarigs...

Everytime I chcek in on these threads and see another rental block hit I want to rent some hash so bad!! I just don't think I will be as lucky as history has it lol.  Maybe I will start off the new year flipping my miners to the solo pool, and throwing a little hash that way as well.  Congrats to all with success hitting blocks.

I was funny, I rented 1P three times for 24 hours each, got squat.  Then I rent 50T for 17 hours and hit a block.  That's why it called the BTC lottery!!!  A couple days ago someone hit a block on -ck's pool with 5T.  So I guess you never know!!

Holy cow, that's a great share and so close to being a block.  Close in difficulty to the current network diff, and close in time that it would have been a block had you got that share before March 18.  Well done!  My S3+ best share is only 44G.

This thread is not a "report your best share" thread.  Unless you have something impressive to show (like the 160G share on the OP's S3) then no need to post it.

Hey - I'm doing this too, a year later than you.

So here goes. For the next YEAR I'll be solo mininng with an old S3 (actually have already been for a couple of weeks) running about 418 - 450ghs (seasonally adjusted). As of today the best share is 1,816,484,083. Only 49,000,000,000 off! LOL!

If you don't hit a block while solo mining, you're basically wasting your power right?
