Title: All time highest litecoin mining difficulty?
Post by: Endgame on October 09, 2012, 09:08:20 AM
Allchains.info reports that litecoin difficulty is currently at 13.22, and is about to bump up to 13.56. I'm not sure if this is the all time highest litecoin difficulty, but it is the highest I have ever seen it. Is there anybody who has kept records of previous mining difficulty who can confirm whether this will be a new record high? If so, what does it mean for litecoin? Will it force a higher litecoin price, or will it prevent additional bitcoin miners from moving across to litecoin?

I've watched the difficulty from October 13th of last year when LTC launched.

this is the highest it has ever been. I suspect it will continue to rise for some time.

Looks like its headed up to 14+ now.  I've been mining on and off since December 2011, and yea, this is the highest I've seen yet.

Yes, it's high.  Network hash rate reached 500MH/s the other day, or the equivalent of about 1,430 5850s.

ya.. tacotime is partly to blame... him and his helpful guides/posts getting all the noobs on board.... (just kidding man..)

but ya, difficulty is just going to go up and up from here as the BTC mining environment gets less and less friendly for a GPU miner and heck.. who doesnt like getting 100ltc/day vs 0.6btc/day

what does this mean for price? price follow difficulty like in bitcoins?

so far it seams to be true. every now and then there are some speculation price changes, but mostly diff. is the 1st factor.

if that remains true, after asics, im guessing a huge fluctuation in litecoin, we have seen 100% price increase the other day, when it spiked at 0,10$/LTC.

for now it settled in around 0,077$/LTC

cheers

Last time I checked Litecoinpool said next difficulty should be over 15.

Wow!

It's profitable to mine LTC vs BTC at the moment. Expect a bunch of bitcoin miners moving in soon.

I seem to recall that it's hit 16 in the not-so-distant-past. That's the highest I'd seen (that may have been a projection, and never met, however)

Its the same question that faces BTC when the difficulty rises. Does price go up or down? Depends on if people are buying LTC for good/services. As long as there is growth in the market place the economy will grow. Harder coins to get...still need coins to spend... price goes up because of demand.

Yea, it got me mining again today at 21.  Now it looks like it wants to drop to 17.  DDoS attack on Litecoinpool, slight price drop, and suddenly Litecoin is boring again.  I'd be okay with low price/difficulty for a bit longer.  ASICS will most likely change everything though.

The issue is that price won't support that high difficulty, so it should drop down very fast.

Assuming people are convinced the current price is long run stable and won't skyrocket when ASICS debut (which I think everyone thinks may happen long term) and thus people don't think LTC is undervalued long run at the moment.

People mined BTC in huge numbers while it was a price-loss but we all know how that turned out. People aren't getting into LTC mining unaware of this fact.

Maybe we are losing hash power to Terracoin? I certainly notice that mining LTC my GPU's get a lot hotter then mining Bitcoin/aka Terracoin. :-)

Even so, if it drops more, I'll jump back to LTC. :-)

I do see a slight decrease in LTC hashrate in the recent week, but I also see a rally of BTC against LTC, which are historically also linked.  I would say people who mine TRC has reduced LTC hashrate by 1-5% or so.

So, with 2gh/s btc (2mh/s ltc) what would you all recommend right now?

With current difficulties/prices, at 2Ghash/2Mhash, BTC is slightly more profitable, by a margin of a few cents, so at this point, I would say its 100% up to preference.

Do keep in mind though, when you are playing with the calculations, Litecoin mining uses a bit more electricity, and more heat.

Check out http://allchains.info/calc.html and mess around with the numbers.

DoubleC already declined creating a TRC exchange. Don't get your hopes up.

I likely doubt BTC-e.com will create one either.

IMHO TRC is not likely to go very far in terms of development.

Hashrate at 823 mh/s....oh where did Mr. Big hash cock go?

It looks like a few big farms shut down.

I would too if I was running a million GPU farm. It's takes too much time and trouble... its like a full time job... to keep them all hashing just to make $30 a month at 45 difficulty. Might as well sell the hardware now, get immediate profit, and not have to deal with the problems. I'm going to be selling off a lot of hardware if difficulty doesn't drop back down.

Yes, it will do this several times.

We will have another 4-5 days with high difficulty and low network speed starting tomorrow.

Hit 2 gh/s this morning.

Hashrate increase =/= Price increase.

ultimately those additional miners coming from btc mining are only trying to get more btc for their efforts.

Been here, done that, seen it.

Hashrate and price, who follows who is a chicken-and-egg problem. They affect each other in either direction, grow or shrink.

The price can be manipulated, hashrate is a better indication of LTC's health and potential in a longer term.

It isn't healthy when someone can add 1 GH/s to the litecoin network at this stage. Last nigh it looked like someone had 70% of all hash power on LTC.

Not exactly sure I condone double spending or code modifications.

FTFY

If I had reasonable assurance that something BIG was going to happen and it would be worth 0.015 BTC in 3 months I would mine the ever living crap out of LTC regardless of current difficulty.

If i felt price was going to be stable, i would only mine when difficulty is on the down cycle.

Will it force a higher litecoin price, or will it prevent additional bitcoin miners from moving across to litecoin?

about 6.5 times that now... :\

It is not that awesome, but logical.

Thousands of new interests were drawn to Bitcoin by articles, and the very steep price increase, so everyone wants to get in. Who gets in, realizes that waitaminutedude, here is something that might not be as premined as BTC, and the difficulty is not that ramped up, let's give it a try with my 1-10 gpu's, instead of Bitcoin.

Hence the network grows, imagine what'll happen if the few terahashes start to mine ltc instead of BTC (which partially started because of it's price increase and the good conversion/electricity rate compared to BTC). The pros already have their batchfile present on the desktop for LTC <--> BTC with everything setup, i am afraid, so...no biggie

Good days will come tho those, who mine :)

I don't think so.  I think it'll keep right on climbing as more GPU farmers get pushed out of sha256 land by ASICs.

After Avalon batch 2 has all shipped, I imagine Litecoin difficulty will be north of 1000.

I think there is a fairly direct relation with difficulty and value. The more mature the currency becomes the more perceived value it has. As people start mining less and less coins per day they will start feeling more comfortable giving litelcoins a more accurate value. Which i believe is more around 8-12 ltc per btc

Sigh.. it seems this last wave of Bitcoin mania brought a lot of new GPU miners to Litecoin.

It petty much killed profitability of it... hope you guys weren't planning on breaking even anytime soon.

It's good for the strength of the network, but sucks for miners looking to pay off or buy new equipment.

Price will be at $5-10 in a month if this keeps up, I would keep your chin up.  There's still about 30-40 GH/s of miners left to migrate to Litecoin from bitcoin.

If anything, now is a good time to buy.

How did you get the 30-40 GH/s number?

The BTC network was about 20 TH/s before the introduction of ASICs... but with the introduction of ASICs a disproportionate amount of new hash power came online as the price of BTC went through the roof.

http://bitcoin.sipa.be/

On the low end, there is 10 GH/s left to migrate, on the high end 30-40 GH/s I would say.

Additionally, much of the new LTC network is from new miners, not old ones.  I've known people setting up operations in the hundreds of MH/s.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm almost positive I saw a 13 GH network hash rate this morning, with a next difficulty estimate in the 400's. (It's in the chart at litecoinpool.org if you don't believe me)

Was that an error? Where'd 4 GH come from and disappear to?

They are the purely for profit miners.

Difficulty went up along with profitability going down, so they are now mining something else that is more profitable.

I wish they'd just stay away in the first place..

Difficulty might go down instead of up next time it changes.

At this rate I'm gonna to have to start mining Devcoins in a couple of weeks :) !

I kind of agree with you. I see price only rising slightly or staying stable short term.

When/if Gox happens, we might go on a bit of a bull run. But, they haven't said anything about that for a while, I hope they are still planning on doing it. Also, that will just set us up for another bubble.

Just curious about general opinion here. Who would think buying a new 7950/7970 or even a couple of them for mining in general, not limited to litecoin, would be a worthy endeavour? Too risky? Not worth it by now? Totally go for it?

The litecoin hashrate dropped hard from 14 gH to almost 9. Is it because many miner changed to feathercoin?

If you are in purely for profit, I wouldn't expect to reach ROI anytime soon with the way the difficulty is rising. If you believe in LTC and are in for the long haul, then yes I think it is worth it. Either way I don't think buying GPUs is that risky since you can always sell them and make a good % back.

Additionally, much of the new LTC network is from new miners, not old ones.  I've known people setting up operations in the hundreds of MH/s.

How do people cool that much Mh... they must live in the north poll.  :D

By my calculations, that is about 43,988 watts of computers.

That would require a 141,203 BTU, 12 Ton A/C... that's just nuts considering most homes only have 2.5 Ton A/Cs....

Those are the guys that mine purely for profit.. they switched to a more profitable coin because Litecoin difficulty is too high right now.

I suggest investing in LTC the currency. I bet you double your money in a month. To make that kind of profit with a mining rig, it might take a long time.
