Title: HELP!!! 120 BTC stuck in LTC account on BTC-e.com $10,000 :(
Post by: spikeyman00 on April 19, 2013, 10:14:28 AM
Hi,

I mistakenly transfered 120 BTC from mtGox into a TRC account on btc-e.com

This is half my life savings and this is not something I can afford to lose.

I was under the impression that if I transfered my BTC into the TRC account a conversion would take place, instead they are stuck in there.

btc-e.com have told me it is impossible to reverse this or get my coins out from the TRC account and into a BTC account which after posting on the Terracoin forum I have found out that Terracoin does accept BTC and it is possible to have these transfered into the BTC section of my account on btc-e.com

Here is the Blockchain

https://blockchain.info/address/1APa8aN5qdYGqgx7LnAZYzCxNVhock2hum

How can I get these back if btc-e.com are refusing to help saying it's impossible.

I have instuctions on how this can be easily done but btc-e.com are not exactly very helpful

The Bitcoins are currently sitting there gathering dust. :(

Please can some help advise on the best way I can get these back

Thanks

hello,

I'm a relative noob myself but I do happen to have both a btc-e and gox account...i'm not quite understanding what you mean...the address that you provided indicates quite a few BTC...you are only wishing to transfer this balance from your BTC-e back to your gox (or wherever?)

Hi thanks for replying,

Yes I just want the BitCoins returned to my MtGox account.

~According to Terracoin support BitCoins can go into a TRC account, and btc-e can transfer these back into my MTGox account

I've contacted btc-e.com support and they are telling me it's impossible how ever it is not.

Quote from Terracoin support forum "It is not impossible since they own private key. "

How can you send BTC to TRC? If you up with BTC you send to their BTC account #
If you want to top up with TRC you send to TRC account number.
Otherwise you send to BTC account and got trade for TRC and vice versa.

Like I said it was done in errror, I though they would be converted into Terracoin if I sent them from BTC to TRC

They don't automatically do it, but the BTC-e admin can get your private key for your TRC wallet, and since it uses the same wallet generation code as Bitcoin, gain access to the funds in your bitcoin account.

Normally your 120 BTC didn't move out of mtgox. As it might have an error before sending to an incompatible address.

I believe that some other coin addresses will flag a non supported BTC address and return them, however Terracoin does not have this in place. it is possible to transfer BTC into TRC, and it is also possible to ge them out of there. But btc-e.com are refusing to help.

Ok...and can you confirm that you actually transferred the BTC from your gox account? And if so, that the address you sent it to belongs to one of your BTC-e accounts?  (again, could you confirm whether we are discussing LTC, or TRC since I'm still a bit confused on that point)

TRC and BTC share the same address's so a TRC Priv Key can be used to generate the same BTC address. Get that TRC Priv Key from btc-e as TradeFortress has said, and you'll be fine. Or, get them to just sweep that address and credit the 120 BTC to you btc-e account!

Agreed.  If BTC-e does not want to give you the key for whatever reason, perhaps they could add it to the Bitcoin wallet they are hosting for you, and then what you've already sent should get credited to your account and you can withdraw.

THIS!

If they don't credit those bitcoins for you, there might be 2 reasons:
1. They don't understand the situation described above (namely, if they have the privkey for the TRC address, they also have the privkey for the corresponding BTC address).
2. They don't want to help you, they'd rather steal that BTC.

Just send them another ticket/request pointing them to this forum thread.
If they still don't help, ask again harder.
If they still don't help, it can be deduced that they aren't acting in good belief.
Then speak up, file a scam report on the forum, ruin their reputation.
Then we'll add another exchange site to our avoid list.

@MegaBrutal and others, thanks for the replies,

No word yet, I hear they are pretty bad at responding. Last time I sent them an email I never got a reply for a couple of days.

I've had a reply from a Terracoin developer explaining the exact process to return my Bitcoins

1. export TRC private key, associated to the destination TRC address used.

2. using their bitcoin wallet, import that private key ("importprivkey"
rpc command) to create the bitcoin address matching the one you sent
bitcoins to.

3. ensure they received the indicated amount (you should provide btc-e
the transaction id seen on your local bitcoin wallet for easier checks &
processing).

4. when fully checked, fund your btc accound with the transaction amount.

Seems fairly simple.

Just a good idea to topic starter.

Create a new topic and ask people to send a message to BTC-E on your behalf. More messages they receive, more attention it will lock, more likely they will do what you ask.

Prepare a short but correct to-do what BTC-E should do to recover your funds.

Promise 30% of your recovered funds (once recovered) shared between every person who tried to help you. This help can be a daily message to BTC-E or creating attention around the web or social.

This will work for sure.

Try writing them a very clear, professional, polite letter explaining the situation and asking if they could go into their terracoind and dump the private key of the address that matches your btc address that you sent to.

They get a lot of nasty and poorly written emails so I suspect they immediately ignore something like this that isn't actually their fault. While it's 'easy' to get the private key, perhaps they don't feel like taking the effort to double check that your story is true.

Write them again, and keep writing them, politely. Hopefully they will eventually help you.

I was under an impression that transactions that are not valid, and can never enter the blockchain can't be initiated.
Could this be considered a bug?

I believe after speaking with a few different people, certain other coin account will reject non valid transfers ie not of the same type. Terracoin does not do this, and Terracoin addresses are also valid BTC addresses.
Someone mentioned that the Terracoin developers should address this, and that he was afraid of this happening.

Yes, the addresses have built-in error-detection, so that making up an address or even typoing a letter in a real address should be detected and the transaction will not be made.  Most of the alt-coins also have a specific unique format of the address, but Terracoin and BTC are indistinguishable.  I wouldn't be surprised if this happens again. :(

BTC and TRC addresses and keys are the same. When he "sent my bitcoins to a TRC address", the transaction was recorded on the BTC block chain, so he actually sent them to a BTC address. TRC was never actually involved in the transaction. Remember that coins actually reside in the block chain and not in a wallet. BTC-e probably believed it was impossible to fix because they looked at the TRC block chain and found no transaction. However, since TRC addresses and keys are the same as BTC addresses, all BTC-e had to do was to get the private key from the TRC wallet and add it to the BTC wallet in order to access the coins in the BTC block chain.

I hope that explains it.

I think the whole story is interesting. I'm glad it all worked out.

Interesting. I don't know why Terracoin developer starts Terracoin's address with 1, not T.

That will cause a conflict with BTC address, glad it's sorted out now for OP.

Just one question, would it be possible to happen the other way around (meaning TRC sent to BTC wallet)?

Of course. Although I'm not an expert, if TRC is using the same "space" as BTC, you could (theoratically)
have the same wallet for both of them. Nice mess.

I did the same mistake and my BTCs gone, ok that was my mistake but also it's about design of the BTC-e's deposit page. At least they can put a warning clause on the page. They had better warn people if it's possible to send BTC to TRC account via "WRONG ADRESS", it cost 150$ to learn this for me  ;D

at first they said "Unfortunately, we cannot return them to You. It is technically impossible."
and  I said them "if they want they can do" because I knew that they did it before.
after that they said "We will try to return them to you but does not guarantee that it will happen."
and of course they did nothing

Can you see that how professional they are...

He's a user who made a mistake that the exchange can easily fix. I can't see any reason for the "lol'ling".
