Title: if bitcoin dies, what alt would you go for?
Post by: European Central Bank on April 07, 2017, 08:08:41 PM
so let's assume bitcoin has imploded. there's still an alt market and you're still committed to the concept of crypto.

where do you put your money after that? what other projects do you truly believe in long term? i don't mean the pursuit of quick dollars, i mean something that you're willing to sit on for many years with enough integrity and potential to really go places.

Ethereum has too much infrastructure to fail (EEA, a near monopoly over ICOs, tons of dapp development, etc)

PIVX is the potential currency rival (not strong enough to rival the current bitcoin brand titan, but if BTC fell, I think PIVX would over take Dash and co)

ICN as the play to capture crypto market growth in general

Lots of other great projects I believe in too (NEM, ZCash, Bitbay, etc)

Ethereum 100%

72Million premine, unlimited supply.. This is not a good store of value and 100% would not replace Bitcoin.

I hope bitcoin wouldnot die and if it is to happen, then i would chose Decred because i think its the most under valued coin now.It has been developed by former bitcoin developers and i think it has good potential.

I'm not really a big coin holder and I do not turn to altcoins very much, but I think that Litecoin is a totally fine coin to replace Bitcoin in that scenario. Other coins do not seem to be anywhere near Bitcoin and they are all just pumps. Litecoin is the only good altcoin and it is much more stable than others.

I think people forget Litecoin basically is Bitcoin, just a bit faster and with fairer distribution. Satoshi is estimated to have one million bitcoins because he started mining totally by himself, not that it was his fault. Litecoin was announced fairly in the middle of a growing Bitcoin community. It's also one of the oldest coins so it's had time to get a broad base.

I don't know what to choose to be honest, I don't see any coin that as good as bitcoin for now, and very doubt the alt coin could survive for long term, maybe I will wait and observe what coin the majority people invested in, if nothing fit my criteria I will quit crypto world, but for now if I need to choose then I will go to either ETH or Litecoin

Ethereum is less scalable than Bitcoin.  There's hardly any users in Ethereum (only speculators) and the blockchain has bloated to many gigabytes.  There's also credible security concerns about the whole Ethereum technology after DAO.

Realistically, the 'old money' of Bitcoin will probably move over to the twin Litecoin.

There really isn't a viable "let's steal Bitcoin's userbase" strategy for alternates.  You have to go blue ocean and gain adoption from people who are not already in crypto.

Ethereum is several times faster than BTC. And raiden will come this month, and it will allow over 1mil TPS. Hardly any users ? There are hundreds of dapps, eth has real usage. Also check the volume.

You can invest into litecoin and depend on the 2-3 chinese whales, i won't. Every few days that wang guy tweets something to either drop or pump the price, because he alone has 35% of total hashrate.

If bitcoin was dead , I would consider XRP, ETH or DASH but XRP will be the most interesting coin for me . I believe that XRP will become a digital currency after Bitcoin and it can be a good payment method online in the future.

I am in favor of ETHereum. The ethereum thing is "in" now a days and many eth contract are becoming popular. Even t some coins are changing to eth contract I am sure ethereum will gain with the absence of bitcoin.Of course there are coins who are worthy to support also.

I think it will depend on the reasons for the implosion if the implosion was caused by the current debate and another alt had activated segwit then that will be an interesting choice but if bitcoin imploded by other more obscure reasons then I don’t know if I will remain in crypto.

Such a situation won't arise and if that happens too  no altcoin grow same as bitcoin. Lot and lots of altcoins are found, people prefer different coins based on the requirement. This will diverse the user profiles causing the altcoins to be listed next to bitcoin.

I've rarely owned litecoin, but I'll have to second this.  Also if doge and Dash were still around in such a scenario, I'd use either one or both.  They're both useful as currencies because of low fees and quick confirmation times and it's a shame that the markets for each are so stunted.

i would go with the fork that would come if bitcoin die, basically bitcoin can't die, because if it die like you said, they make it an altcoin based on bitcoin, with new market and value and everything begin from zero again, but if this is not possible because there is no interest anymore and this is the only reason why an altcoin may die, i could go with HLM new spreadcoin project, i love that project look very promising to me

XRP ? I hope you're kidding. XRP can't even be a public digital currency because it is centralized and it's controlled by a private company. No one in their right mind would think of accepting XRP as a public digital currency, because Ripple is like a central bank, they can create coins out of thin air and dump on market, as they often do. If Bitcoin would die, it would only happen if Cryptocurrencies will ever be declared illegal in most countries worldwide. People will get VERY scared and sell all their holdings as soon as possible, driving the price to the bottom of the bowl. I don't see this happening though.

this is a hypothetical situation that has been asked at least a dozen times with a dozen topics. and they all lack one thing in their logic "Why did bitcoin die in that hypothetical situation?"

there can be many reasons and most of them lead to a very simple answer: "I would choose none of the altcoins" and the reason is even simpler. because if the biggest thing out there with the most adoption, the longest time being around, with the best and biggest developers working on it such as Satoshi and Hal Finney,... and a lot more, if this fails i wouldn't even consider an altcoin which is a copy of bitcoin in 90% of cases and they don't even have half the development team!

maybe the sheer weight of vested interests and warring camps is exactly what might end up screwing everything up. there's probably at most a few hundred or low thousands of individuals who have control over this thing and at are each other's throats.

on the other side there's a few million people who want something that simply works and has a secure and bright future. i don't believe they have infinite patience for turf wars. forgetting price and market action for a moment, coins such as litecoin look like a much more peaceful and constructive scene right now.

of course all of bitcoin's problems could transfer elsewhere but there's time for other coins to take what's been learnt and apply it before all the assholes descend. segwit on litecoin would be a prime example of this.

LTC only if we already managed to get segwit enabled, otherwise we will stumble upon the same problems.

Also if bitcoin dies it means i dont have any money to invest in any alts and I would be back to 0 so I would just be done with crypto and with life in general.

So you have to jump ship before ship sinks.

I guess I would diversify in XMR, ETH and LTC. What else is there?

Yes, I also trust litecoin for now. But I would also be willing to go for ethereum as second best after bitcoin.
Nevertheless, my choice will depend more on the pay rates. In case there will appear nice signature campaigns paying not in ethereum or litecoin but still in some stable coin easy to sell, I'll choose that one, because cryptos are mostly the way of earning for me now.

Bitcoin would never die and many altcoins today are dependent only on bitcoins as their buyers/sellers are only active in the BTC field. I would choose ETH, DASH, EDG and DTB as of now as they have a great potential to reach 0.1-0.2 BTC if there are enough traders on exchanges and their starting value is much higher than what BTC was when it was just launched.

If bitcoin dies, There are many altcoins available in the market. There are best ones and there are some other that is slowly climbing the market. Like Eth, Clock, or LTC are the best ones right now and some also like ConCoin, XRB and other new alt coins that are coming. So if Bitcoin dies there are many choices you have you can invest in some new alt coins in the market. You just to have choose wisely but coin coin rules.  :) :)

in 2013 definitely, these days less so. there are more and more direct fiat gateways for alts and if you go read places like r/ethtrader there are people there who've never touched bitcoin at all.

it would definitely be a disaster but there's enough interest elsewhere to keep things moving.

Both were mention in most Alt coins that have higher value when mined. I hope there were  still other coins that can exceeds the expectation that bitcoin have offered.

Thats true many altcoins now that can replace bitcoin if ever it dies but I do think thats not going to be soon or its going to be a long long long time or its not going to die. XMR and ETH are good choices for alternate if ever bitcoin dies those are one of the highest value in the market right now. I also think theres also going to be more altcoins in the futures thats going increase in value and definitely can be mined in higher value. We just have to wait and see soon enough. ;)

if bitcoin die, what would be the price of other alt in bitcoin? i think all the alt would lose value and die as well or becoming not that good as they are now, all the money are in bitcoin, which make all the other coins valuable, when bitcoin was going to fok with BU, the money were moving from bitcoin to dash and ETH, the strongest, this scenario can repeat itself every time bitcoin is in trouble, but it could also be that the money will move to something else, if bitcoin go down too much, like gold or stocks market

LTC is a cloned code of BTC with a few small tweaks. What will cause BTC death can be applied to LTC just as easily.

Why do you believe the same politics cannot happen in LTC? It has the same miner centralization in China. It is, well, a copycat, what else to say. It might do well in the short and mid terms. In the long term it has the same flaws as Bitcoin.

of course it will. but there's a window where segwit could happen and that could be the future. once it's through, it's through.

there's also a possibility that the people steering litecoin will learn from all the shit that happened to bitcoin and do their best to address it. look at how active charlie lee has been about trying to get segwit through. he's been open to more radical ideas than anyone from core ever was.

Once it's through, it could be the end of a decentralized censorship-free coin. The possibility of LN hubs being used to censor transactions is not FUD, it is real. The price of the coin could multiply many-fold regardless. Not everyone is unhappy with censorship, Paypal is still prosperous and they censor like mad men.

I think I would divide my coins between eth and litecoin, maybe a bit of ripple too.
They seem to be the most used ones so far, with high volumes and all. I would still continue day trading on altcoins tough, so I would buy and sell all the coins that looks attractive regardless of bitcoins situation.

This is a growth influence for ltc. And a growth deterrent for btc.

So a year from now. Ltc is 500 usd a coin btc is still at 1200usd a coin.

Bit fury figures a better ASIC boost .  They do it on the sneak.  Bitmain figures an even better ASIC boost.

They do it on the sneak.

This huge hidden hash causes a lack of confidence  In btc it continues to flatten while ltc grows and passes btc in 2020.

Btc finally goes to segwit too late in 2021. This makes more growth in ltc as it had a head start at segwit.

It is now 2222 with ltc at 1400 usd and btc at 500 usd.

All of above is an exercise of what if.  And while possible I don't think it will happen.

I can't imagine what have to happen that bitcoin would die first of all.
But if that happen, I'm probably would go out of the crypto world. Yes, there are some good altcoins, but I don't see which can be first option for mostly people. Maybe Litecoin, but I'm not a big fan of it.

First off it would take a massive implosion for bitcoin to die. Miners are already heavily invested and banks have created full out bitcoin divisions. But if the implosion did happen LTC is next up. ETH proposed transition to POS may have unknown side effects.

No, I don't assume that bitcoin is going to die. And I don't bet for any alt coin if "ever" that is going to happen. Bitcoin will remain the main deal for crypto currency.

Yeah, I'll do the same thing, there's nothing to worry about. The price is up and this type of topic isn't going to help bitcoin to grow. But okay, let's say it will happen, the crypto currency market will be crazy and that's the time for me go out of it.

I think I would divide my coins between eth and litecoin, maybe a bit of ripple too.
They seem to be the most used ones so far, with high volumes and all. I would still continue day trading on altcoins tough, so I would buy and sell all the coins that looks attractive regardless of bitcoins situation.

Yup, the way you are doing is a good thing to make you get no big loss if indeed bitcoin already in time for dead or expired. Bitcoin is a digital currency that most beneficial compared to some of the existing currency, but the weakness of the bitcoin is on the system and also being one of the users. Bitcoin system now have some problems and it made a complaint against user bitcoin, indeed it's not something fatal thing but if there is no good solution then growth will be slower or bitcoin can be will disappear or die

VC will never die not there are too many people with assets that cannot be converted to fiat without repercussions. BTC has always been the gold standard as it is and has been a blockckain that is large enough to be a safe store of wealth but as that becomes more centralized the foundation is crumbling. It cannot hold it's position forever with the choices the community has been (not) making.

To find the best Alt for to hedge vs BTC just look at stability VS fiat and make sure it has organic growth and not just premine P&D's

And what are you going to do when vitalik hard forks your coins away? ETH has already lost all it's credibility by removing it's immutability. LTC is pretty safe as far as that goes, long periods of stable price, kept updated and a large community and the merge mining helps it as well and spreads the hash. It's being used as P&D right now from inside trading but that will level out soon enough. BTC choice are making LTC more attractive everyday. But I still think XMR is the safest bet with the highest upside.

Ripple is a complete 100% pre-mined centralized shitcoin that is the worst P&D out there just check the charts. There is no stability or safety in XRP.

There is a lot of altcoins (of course) lying around here and there.
But the only one that I really trust and feel that it's a "sleeping-giant" is LTC.

Eth has potential as well but I don't know litecoins just grab my attention much more.

Litecoin is on the stage for a long time and we need to give that coin a credit for surviving so long, I`m among the people who like litecoin and that is my second choice. In this moment litecoin is still affordable for many people, and maybe litecoin can be next coin that will rise like eth and dash raised in past year, that is also one important thing that can make people start buying litecoin, higher demand will lead to price rise. Many things go in favor for litecoin, to not mention that lately there is many threads here about litecoin, some videos on youtube. Litecoin suits my taste much more then eth or dash.

Ethereum is totally different technology. Monero is a big potenital for future. Dash need to time. it's too early for say something. and we can't ignore LTC. Of course other coins isn't trash but They provide service other tech like Ethereum. for ex. We can't compare with Ripple and BTC or ETH. These are tottaly different technology. So when evaluate it we should consider it. We don't know other geneterations what brings.

So ltc goes segwit

Btc goes bu

This is a growth influence for ltc. And a growth deterrent for btc.
You are a miner, very active in the mining section. How would you rate your own influence to steer the ship? I'm somewhat missing small miners at a huge mass stating their opinion. Bitcoin turned into something only the big guys are mining nowadays, which sucks.
Main reason why I am into Alts.

Good choices, since these two are making noise in the crypto market. But still when this happen, I really can't see any alt coin to choose and well if I will ever quit after this scenario. Maybe I'll be back for a couple of months or longer and will look on the news on what's the current and if the market is still promising I'll in and will choose.

Just a commonsense thing to happen on which people will surely jump on other coin or crypto when bitcoin tend to die and dont think too seriously since its just an assumption since we do all know bitcoin wont easily die or being replaced.there are lots of potential alts around does capable on taking the top spot.

I don't think a coin with such a potential of bitcoin exists anymore getting a good developer team as bitcoin has got. Bitcoin 2.0 might be a possible one, but it might exist as a competitor and not as a replacement for the present bitcoin.

My realistic answer is that I wouldn't put my money in crypto anymore, if Bitcoin dies, crypto dies for a generation.

Using your rules though, I would have to go to an alt. Looking at the top coins, I couldn't imagine why Litecoin would succeed when Bitcoin fails. I don't trust ETH or centralized Ripple. Anonymous coins have no wide spread future, they are fo buying drugs.

So, the highest coin on the market cap list I could find that I don't dislike is Peercoin. So I will go with that!

2012-13 maybe, but definitely not any more. there's dollar markets for enough alts now and some of them are off doing things that bitcoin can't. it's kind of getting to a point now where i think it's stupid that people get uptight about bitcoin losing 'market share'. the market should be splintering. there's so much more happening now.

Such a situation won't arise and if that happens too  no altcoin grow same as bitcoin. Lot and lots of altcoins are found, people prefer different coins based on the requirement. This will diverse the user profiles causing the altcoins to be listed next to bitcoin.
It could happen, even if the new coin is not as strong as bitcoin was, the amount of money invested in crypto will get bigger as it gets more popular and that will allow any altcoin to eventually reach a greater market cap that the one bitcoin could have reached.

PPC has gotten my attention as long as the pegged at a dollar NBT NuBits project was healthy. Now I would not know what to do with those PPC besides selling.
And by coincidence Tether currently has legal issues against Wells Fargo, Bitfinex might get affected.

If high volatile crypto coins fall flat, maybe anything "1 Dollar" stabilized construct might jump into the gap. Makes sense that those occasionally have run into issues, maybe there are bigger forces watching this development too.

None of these pegged coins seem to be able to survive. Tether sounds like it might be screwed for now. And what's the point of holding a pegged coin long term anyway?  Stick with a bank account and you get the same money with insurance and zero risk.

Nothing last forever. Eventually Bitcoin will die. But I agree with you will not be that fast.

About the choice who would took over, you could hear opinion of guy who saved a NASA shuttle mission back  in 1994

https://moneromonitor.com/episodes/2017-04-10-Episode-002.html

Howard: Yeah. I suppose if you dig into Monero as I have done and do the reading and you think about cryptocurrencies work or how they should work, you start to realize that Monero is actually unique. In a field where there are thousands of coins out there, new ones being forked off and presented every day, Monero is actually, as I put it, it’s the only one that actually deserves the title of cryptocurrency, right? If you look at where the word “crypto” comes from, from the Greek “cryptos” which means hidden, okay? And you look at the science of cryptography; most of cryptography is oriented towards obfuscating data, hiding information. Alright, hiding information such that only the person you want to see it is allowed to see it, right?
Mike: Yeah.
Howard: But if you look at every other “cryptocurrency” that exists, none of them actually hides information.
Mike: I guess, you could argue that Bitcoin uses cryptography to hide the keys to your wallet and that everything else while being public, if you can’t hide the keys, then there’s no way that this could work. You could argue that that still fits that definition, couldn’t you?
Howard: That’s like saying, okay, you hide the keys to the front door of your house, right? Everybody still knows that your house is sitting where it is.
Mike: True.
Howard: But the important part… You can consider a key to be an access control mechanism, it says, this is how you get through this doorway, right?
Mike: Sure.
Howard: But with Monero, everything is hidden, even the door is hidden.
Mike: Okay.
Howard: The information that’s being transmitted over the Monero network is hidden and that’s really what cryptography is about, about hiding the messages.
Mike: Yeah, okay, so maybe you’d be happy calling Bitcoin a digital currency, but Monero is a true cryptocurrency, I can buy that.

In my knowledge if ever Bitcoin dies then 99% all of the crypto currency will die because when Bitcoin like old coins can die then what is the fate of other coins. All of the coins are valued under Bitcoin and do you think that if Bitcoin dies do the crypto currency users will have faith on other altcoins, I dont think so. So Bitcoin death is the death of crypto currency and all of them will go back to the fiat currency way.

where do you put your money after that?

If the idea is to "store value for the long term", or "play greater fool" I don't see the use of crypto.  If it is to use as a currency, it doesn't matter much, does it, from the moment you can acquire it, and spend it.  But "currency usage" is not something that became a success in crypto 'currencies', is it ?

The only reason to use crypto is when you can't do it with fiat, for one or another reason.  I can only think of things like monero, or zcash or so, to be suitable for that.  I wouldn't touch DASH with a stick.  I guess LTC could be used for those things that have some fiat obstacle that isn't a legal obstacle, and where you don't have to hide (but in most cases, then you CAN use fiat).  And if you want to gamble, most probably eth or one of its ICO tokens for gamblers, is suitable.

But it all depends on why you need crypto (why can't you do it with fiat ?) ; different needs may/should induce different coins.

If it is to trade and to play greater-fool games, the coin doesn't really matter, does it ?  It is penny stock then.

so let's assume bitcoin has imploded. there's still an alt market and you're still committed to the concept of crypto.

where do you put your money after that? what other projects do you truly believe in long term? i don't mean the pursuit of quick dollars, i mean something that you're willing to sit on for many years with enough integrity and potential to really go places.

Ethereum, litecoin and ripple are big contenders but any coin could make a big surprise like dogecoin and burstcoin and who knows a darkhorse coin could emerge like Burstcoin and Mrai all of these has a strong community support

SingularDTV could have the huge price increase that everyone in that thread wants, as of now the price of the coin is very expensive so I would have to sit that out unless there's a huge dump.

NEM = "new economy movement" that sounds nice at least, marketing wise. I have forgotten what NXT stood for :( and seemingly its a ghost town by now, not a prospering competitor. NEM and NXT stood on my notecard since when I began exploring BTC.
Maybe their Ardor rebranding can revive it? Nobody mentioned it so far as I have seen.

If some serious bug is found in code this will be the end of all coins, because they are all copies. Trust will be lost forever, and i believe this advantage will be taken by big corporations and banks this is simple. Their solutions will save us all!
Else i don't see how Bitcoin can suddenly be dead?

so let's assume bitcoin has imploded. there's still an alt market and you're still committed to the concept of crypto.

where do you put your money after that? what other projects do you truly believe in long term? i don't mean the pursuit of quick dollars, i mean something that you're willing to sit on for many years with enough integrity and potential to really go places.

Considering how mining is a huge waste of resources, and the cost of the wasted energy is charged to the users of the system, the future is not by some proof-of-waste coin like LTC, monero or dash.

I would go for Ripple or PIVX.

It will be hard to get bitcoin reads now that it's increasing in number of user, lots of investor using bitcoin now and have lots of development it can be done to it. A big future ahead in bitcoin, but if ever that suddenly dead of bitcoin happens ,I will try to use XMR or make more research on the different alt coins possibilities of growing.

A quick look at coinmarketcap.com reveals at least 10 cryptocurrencies that were started from scratch and do not share any code with Bitcoin. There are more of them.

Ethereum, obviously. This is the most likely choice for other user as well. The other coins you put doesn't look good for me to invest though. They would likely to go dead as well because of the low trading volume they have. Although mrai is also looking good from my perspective, but I doubt it can it can sustain it in the future.

XMR is actually the good choice, fair mining and large adoption in black market, I will go for ETH, XMR, STRAT, GNT.
XMR is pretty good though I think that it's overpriced for the time being. The Darknet price pump wasn't worth the hype, there should be more people trying to use Monero instead of Bitcoin.

OPs question was not if any coin is to expensive right now, but which coin would took over dominant part in crypto if suddenly Bitcoin proves unsecured.

When you talk of prices, I think whole cryptospace it overheated and  we will most likely see serious corrections in upcoming months. Funny thing is that I totally disagree with you about  Monero. Monero will not correct much.

It’s a complicated issue, but as I see it the most sure thing, for me, would be that I could go back to fiat. But if we assume that I want to stay in crypto world I would go with two alts. The first one is ltc and the second in monero. Ltc because is some years around meaning that has gain the people's trust, and has some features like as faster block confirmation time and is cheap, so would be widely accepted from people. However the anonymity, privacy and untraceablility of monero inspires me what a cryptocurrency must be. If we want censorship then why not use paypal and visa cards which are buyer friendly medium of payment?

I would go for a mix between litecoin, ethereum, xmr, zcash... if BTC dies it would be a gamble trying to find the right coin, so i guess diversification would be the right move.

It's not going to die tho, so its not even an issue.

While questions like these are fair, they belie an attitude common in crypto that is unwise in the extreme: going all-in on a single coin (or at least very short list). Most professional investors won't put more than 2-5% of their investment capital at risk in any one venture. The crypto space has fewer strong options, but I would still advocate no more than 5-10% in any one coin, 15% at most.

For instance, a lot of people have answered, "Ethereum," and I agree with that general sentiment. But remember it wasn't long ago that an attacker found a way to temporarily cripple the network. The next attack might be more successful, and that's true of every coin out there.

So say you want to put 25% of your stack into an anon coin. Don't ask yourself, "Which one is best," then all-in that coin. Instead, rank them and then distribute your 25% to ranking. You will do better on average in the long run splitting that 25% into, say, 3 different anon coins. After all, Monero was crushing the anon coin market until recently when Dash blew up. Someone who thought Monero (or Zec) was best would have benefited from the run up in Dash so long as they were at least a little bit diversified.

I really dont know yet because most of the alts will have around here have not been able to live up to expectation and there are no generally accepted parameters to decide the good investment for those ones coming out on a daily basis. I am sure when that finally happens and bitcoin dies, then I won't be the only person affected and I will have no other option than to follow the community to the alts its choosing.

Mentioned here a few times already, but I would also go with Litecoin. It's similar to Bitcoin and a little bit better imo.
I also really like that fact that there will more coins in circulation than with Bitcoin. I've always found that 21 million cap a bit on the low side.
The 21 million cap may seem low but in the future we will not need to transact full bitcoins at the moment I prefer to use the mBTC as the correct way to measure bitcoin since the price is close to one dollar may be in the future we will have to use even lower amounts to represent the unit closer to a dollar in value.

LTC, if I had to pick one.
ETH would make my list but it will have gone PoS by the time Bitcoin managed to "implode" making it impossible to mine.

Realistically though, as I'm a MINER not an INVESTOR, I target which coins are the most profitable for the most part for the hardware I currently have.

I wanna go with LTC, besides from being the nearly identical Cryptocurrency to Bitcoin, some are saying that it is the silver from bitcoins gold.

Tho' etherium is a good choice too, it's development is still ongoing and a very good contender to Bitcoin. As a matter of fact, Microsoft giant is backing it up.
If Bitcoin will vanish I think I'll go with these two.

LTC, without a doubt.

yeah. i honestly think that's the only one that would meet my criteria for the long haul. i don't know if that's because i'd still be pining for a bitcoin and that's the closest equivalent.

I also go with LTC, i may not have any holding of this but the way I see it, even with different algorithm, this resembles Bitcoin in so many ways.  The only advantage is that this has fast confirmation.  Aside from Litecoin, I cannot see anything else, others maybe popular but they are either instamined, premined or centralized.

There are many coins in the cryptocurrency ecosystem, but if we're going for something to replace Bitcoin, it would have to be Dash. It's following in Satoshi's original vision of a peer-to-peer digital cash, has better-incentivized governance to prevent the kinds of problems Bitcoin has run into today, and works much better as a streamlined payment system.

In fact, even if Bitcoin doesn't collapse, but stays the same and even continues to grow, Dash's Evolution update will likely push it to the average consumer far before any other coin. These will be interesting times to watch.

Bitcoin's days are numbered .... and those that understand cryptocurrency well and want to save their investments the best most sane move to make would be to DASH, once the Evolution release kicks in (https://www.dash.org/evolution/) and the masses adopt it for everyday use then you will see a big reversal and bitcoin will be priced in Dash!

It may be useful to read introductions to blockchains and Bitcoin if you have just arrived here or are unfamiliar with them.

Scaling issues aside, a PoW (proof-of-waste) coin will not be replacing the first failed PoW.

You guys realize that the BTC miners are using as much electricity as a smaller western modern country.
All it does is to move the control over the currency to where the electricity is the cheapest, and the company that can develop the most energy-efficient chips.

All this electricity has a price. This price is draining the users of value.

It's the most inefficient payment system bar none. To think that once BTC is out of the way, we would move on to the next giant resource waster is to simply not understand the markets.

all true but if you look into the electricity situation the cheapest is electricity that's otherwise going to waste. they've built mines next to hydro plants in china that churn out power that no one's using.

mining will become more efficient, electricity production will become more sustainable. in portugal recently they last something like three and a half days on pure renewable power recently.

1. No, it's not going to waste. You simply do not build new power plants.
2. If mining becomes more efficient, you simply mine more. You do not choose to mine less to have smaller bills.
3. If energy becomes cheaper, you can do other useful stuff from it, like drive a car. Not waste it completely.

You simply fail to understand that the BTC miners pay at least !!!!!! 6 billion dollars !!!!!! A DAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Could be towards 20 billion or 40 billion as well, I just took a ridiculously cheap price.

If you do not see a problem with this, I don't know what to say.

Honestly if Bitcoin dies, I think that the Altcoin Market won't last long. Let us think of a reason first why Bitcoin will be dead. Probably its big like the government is taking action of making Bitcoin illegal. With that being started Bitcoin will drastically have a lower demand, But I don't think Bitcoin users' next step will be finding am Altcoin to replace Bitcoin. Because they know that Cryptocurrency in general has now have a bad image to the government. Also Bitcoin being dead can greatly influence the Cryptocurrency in general, being the father of it all is obvious.

I do not think all altcoins lives depends on Bitcoin.  there are lots of altcoin that have its strength and purpose.  Being the father of cryptocurrency does not mean when it became obsolete, so all the cryptocurrency is.

so let's assume bitcoin has imploded. there's still an alt market and you're still committed to the concept of crypto.

where do you put your money after that? what other projects do you truly believe in long term? i don't mean the pursuit of quick dollars, i mean something that you're willing to sit on for many years with enough integrity and potential to really go places.

It would be nice to open a poll to see which one receives more votes.

Why don't you guys go read my post a few up from yours and then go and research what it means. The bolded made me choke on my coffee, that is hilarious, did you actually have a straight face while typing thay or are you just that ignorant of the subject?

it would be the final demonstration of what i've suspected for a long time. as long as the dollars are rolling in, not enough people really care about what bitcoin was designed to be.

and maybe bitcoin itself is no longer designed to do it when you look at the deformed power structures that've developed. at least it's never rolled back.

It's amazing how many morons trade based on nothing but what the other sheeple are doing, they just don't get the fact they will be the last bag holder when the music stops.

Until then, it's hard to say, coz it might well be something that doesn't yet exist today. Also depends on the reason WHY bitcoin imploded -- coz other blockchains using the same feature which got compromised will also not survive.

But perhaps it could be something along the lines of ethereum or even xmr or zcash or byteball? who knows..

If bitcoin dies, other crypto currencies will die too, but I think Ethereum may not be dead, because ETH is second largest crypto currency.

If bitcoin dies i will choose ethereum and make investments into it, i choose ethereum because there are some reasons,
1. Ethereum has large of capitalization marketcap after bitcoin, we can see on https://coinmarketcap.com
2. Ethereum has good innovations and fitures with smart contract on ethereum blockchain
3. Many projects be builded on ethereum network and it is mean many people who use ethereum than other   altcoins
4. Ethereum has good fluctuation of price, so with ethereum the traders can make good profit.

With the bitcoin nothing gone bad Because I understand that if bitcoin will goes die then Ofcourse the other altcoins will not more remain stable in the market , it is because the value of the altcoins depends upon the market of the bitcoin .
Suppose it happened , then I will not out my all money bn in any single altcoin , I will buy. more then 4-5 altcoins like ETH  dash monero & BTU( wait for this soon will spread in the market) and also other altcoins that will became famous at that time , Because with the down in the market of the bitcoin , it may be possible the market of the other particular altcoin may fall .
So to put money in multiple altcoins is more better then for the particular choice .

If this happens and continue using the crypto concepts, then I will choose the type of coin which is not much value with bitcoin can even exceed high prices above bitcoin.
For this type of coin is what I can not mention the type of the coin, which would still prefer the type of coins you can add income better.

If Bitcoin died, I would create my own altcoin and I would name it Bitcoin.
The thing is, while Bitcoin could sputter and lose it’s value (imagine 1BTC being 0.3$ again), it would be very hard for Bitcoin to totally die being decentralized and all.

That altcoin will no longer being good if you create another bitcoin . Why because if bitcoin is already dead so whoever believe in your altcoin ? It is much better if you create one be it unique to others .
We dont know what can actually happen on bitcoins in future.

The first question I ask is:
1) What would be the most likely cause of Bitcoin's death?
The next question I ask is:
2) Which coin(s) (note I say coins not tokens) have a solution to (1) above?

I have been looking at question 1 above since 2011, when I first got involved with BItcoin, and I have come to the conclusion that the fixed 1 MB blocksize limit, and Bitcoin's inability to scale on the main chain is in fact the answer to question 1. Attacks on fungibility come in my opinion second. Furthermore second tier solutions such as the lighting network require scaling of the main chain in order to function, so while they do have very valid uses there are not a solution to the inability of the main chain to scale. At the heart of the problem lies the 21,000,000 XBT limit in Bitcoin, since this requires the eventual replacement of block rewards with fees to secure the proof of work. The trouble with this is: How does one make fees to rise? The answer becomes restricting the blocksize to create transaction scarcity. It is this that lies at the heart of Bitcoin's core opposition to increasing the blocksize. They are genuinely concerned about the long term security of Bitcoin and want to force the "fee market" while there is still enough block reward left to secure Bitcoin.

There is currently one coin among the top 10 in marketcap that has a solution to question 1 above, That is of course Monero. The reason is that Monero has both an adaptive blocksize limit and a minimum permanent emission of 0.6 XMR per block. The permanent emission ensures that Monero does not have to rely on a "fee market" in the future to secure the coin and fees can then be used to control the growth, via a market, of the blocksize by forcing the total amount of fees per block to compete with the emission. The net effect of this is that the total amount of fees per block becomes proportional to the emission so it becomes clear that fees can never replace the emission over the long term.

If one takes a look at other tokens one must first eliminate those tokens whose primary purpose in not their use as money. This does not mean that those tokens do not have value in their own right and may be worthy of investment and / or speculation. Examples of this are  Ethereum, Ripple, NEM, Ethereum Classic and Stratis. This leaves Litecoin, Dash, Monero and Bytecoin as tokens that aim to be coins. Litecoin and Dash have fundamentally the same issue as Bitcoin. A fixed maximum number of coins and a fixed blolcksize. In reality all they offer is a "kick the can down the road" solution. Bytecoin is more interesting. It has the same adaptive blocksize limit as Monero but a finite number of coins. This is aggravated by a very fast emission curve and a pre - mine / ninja mine of over 80% of the max number of coins. The net result of this is a block reward that is already below Monero's permanent block reward and falling fast. I believe that it is simply a matter of time before Bytecoin is taken down by a 51% attack. It could also fall to one of the many attacks that Shelby Moore III has described under one of his many usernames in this forum.  I know many in the Monero community see Bytecoin as the scam in the pre / ninja mine. I rather see Bytecoin as the canary in the coal mine, when one considers solutions such Bitcoin Unlimited. This air is getting more foul every 2 minutes and it is only a matter of time before the canary dies.

So what is left is Monero which also has the solution of a robust answer to the fungibility attacks on Bitcoin.

Edit: The Monero minimum emission is below 1% year inflation. This places it below the long term inflation rate of gold. For comparison it corresponds approximately to Bitcoin having a minimum emission of 3 XBT per block.

I prefer doge because of its low value making transaction fee cheaper than the others and doge still last long despite the low value, eth and ripple because it's just below bitcoin and is likely to compete with bitcoin in coinmarketcap

I would go for for ETH or RDD.
ETH because is the second by value. RDD is kind of interesting because of the annual % that is Staked. So it acts like a bank in some sort and you have the coins in you. So if RDD have bigger value - demand I will go for it.
But if BTC dies this mean that most people will switch to other Altcoin with high demand in my opinion so the prices will go up fast. Or a lot of people will get mad and leave everything that go to the trash all the money and time.
My opinion ETH or RDD :P.

Obviously , i prefer with litecoin and eth. There is some reason why I choose those alternatives coin. Fisrt, litecoin is first alternatives coin that it's trusted enough, Many people put invest into that coin. Second, ethereum has many communities users which make ethereum get stronger than other alternatives coin. The price of ethereum keep going to the moon time by time, also it's has potentially growing in the future.

Yes, it will be good if the transaction is less but the supply of Doge is huge you have to consider this also. Because it cannot the same price like bitcoin because of high supply. I hope ETH is the best option because right there are many smart contracts being created by Ethereum.

There's a lot of places to invest, such as currency, commodities, and bond. Many ways to make profit but risk is always there. Everyone has their answer because they have plan with good calculation. We can follow success people or create new business, do something great. Like or not that's reality, don't stop trying or you'll be hanging. Good luck.

If bitcoin dies ETH will be the most stable alternative but an alt that is going places is definitely Aragon. Actually I've already put a lot of money and thought to Aragon even before bitcoin dies. I found a good strategy is to put money in relatively stable currencies like bitcoin and ether, then put the rest in currencies that are going to moon such as Aragon.

There are some altcoins that I think I would go for in case bitcoin dies. First of all ETH is leading as the best cryptocurreny after bitcoin then it is Litecoin, ripple and maybe ICN (it has potential).

There are also some other altcoins but for the moment I don't see any high potential besides those that I mentioned above but the crypto world is full of surprises.

Still if the question remains same, I would say that I won't believe in anything else because if bitcoins could die, why not these alts can?

Is it conceivable that there could be a high enough volume of small-fee transactions that restricting the block size to raise fees would be unnecessary?

If Bitcoin died we go for fiat not altcoins. :o

XtraBYtes solves the major issues with Bitcoin, unlimited scaling, 100% security, no chance of a 51% attack, no POW, no POS either.
