Title: Is Bitcoin digital gold or digital cash?
Post by: 687_2 on April 21, 2017, 06:52:13 AM
Answers to this question are constantly posted on this forum and on Reddit by people who are not software engineers/developers, nor product managers. Either that or they are truly terrible at their jobs. Reddit in particular has really turned into a garbage dump, but that's something for another discussion.

Anyway, in a business context you want to build software that meets your customer's expectations, so understanding how a user makes use of your software solution is really important for smooth communication and shared understanding between management, marketing and engineering. Normally you want to write out really detailed user stories/journeys, maybe even draw diagrams or create mock-ups that demonstrate the exact problem you're trying to solve and how your thing will solve it.

Here's a teaser:

Alice is at a farmer's market and wants to buy broccoli from a vendor. How does she pay?

Here are just a few important details that we need to know first:

- What country is Alice in, and what are the economic conditions?
- How much money does she make every year/how well off is she?
- How technologically sophisticated is she/how old is she?
- What tastes and preferences does Alice have/what prejudices her in certain ways?

We need a lot more information before we start talking about what BIP we can code up in a day. If you think about these questions only from your own perspective and experience, you're discounting the majority of people on this planet that want to use the same technology. Bitcoin's value depends mainly on how many people can safely use it, and if it's not in use by the largest number of people possible, it will not achieve it's full potential/value.

The correct answer to the question in this poll is "it depends". Bitcoin is for humans, and humans have different needs. Most likely every redditor and bitcoin.org poster's favorite potential use case, "in-person payments at high volume merchants", will not be satisfied by Bitcoin directly. Use something else for that one narrow use case if Bitcoin isn't doing it for you, and support the engineers who are working to make Bitcoin more secure and stable, goddamnit  ;D

It's a temporary store of value and a speculative asset.

I don't think it can be called a true store of value unless it maintains 4 digits for 4 years or something because after the 2013 4 digit slam down to 200-300 usd I think anyone who sees it as a true store of value is clueless.

Yes, Bitcoin is relatively stable due to market interest but longterm is a continual unknown.

It is an value storage token that has got the similarities of digital gold. One thing that makes it better than the digital gold or digital cash is it's evolution within the system or technology unlike the commodity value. The value has now getting closer to gold and soon it would cross it growing big.

It depends on how everyone as an individual makes use of Bitcoin. I personally see and use it more as something that can be seen as Gold. I am not really interested in using my coins for spending purposes. I use it as a store of value, where my main motive is to keep a large portion of my wealth outside the banking and governmental system. At the same time, the volatile nature of Bitcoin lends itself perfectly for investment/trading purposes, which is also what I am using Bitcoin for. For me the right term is indeed digital Gold.

It is interesting how the marketing has changed over the years. It seems it wasn't that long ago that it was trumpeted as both gold and digital cash. With the scaling debate and fee increases though the digital cash angle has taken a backseat to the digital gold narrative. And in fairness it was originally conceived as "bit gold" so maybe this is the inevitable end point of any crypto asset; it eventually runs into scaling problems and then relies on some additional layer to create the cash part.

Well, you can't sell it as both. There's only one way: digital gold. Big blocks kill the digital gold feature, which kill the digital cash feature too (you can have digital cash when digital gold is not an option), since big blocks centralize the network.

With conservative blocks, you can get digital gold, and you can build on top a second layer, which is debatable if it would be considered digital cash or not, but it's definitely more private than traditional payment systems and fiat currencies.

Moreover what i am seeing concern about bitcoin is a future currency that is coming up to dominate others.
So it is a future currency as we are seeing every thing clear.
I don't think that there any currency in comparison with bitcoin now.

Bitcoin is a symbol of the power of technology, the power of digital, as far as I know, 1M BTC has the power of 500 supercomputers working together. A terrible power. That's why bitcoins are popular. And bitcoin can really compete with gold, not long ago, it has overtaken gold, even for a short time, but enough to show its mighty power.

More than 80% of Bitcoin users are not computer code literate - in my opinion, this is the main issue when it comes to mainstream adoption of digital assets.

Non code literate market participants are not being catered to in any direct or meaningful way.

This could cause serious problems in the future is left un-addressed

It is a digital currency, or can be called as digital cash, that was the main purpose of bitcoin created, to make global transaction easier and more efficient without the need of changing the value of different fiat, however because of bitcoin is valuable and the amount is limited people used this opportunity to create more profit by making them "more wanted" by keep bitcoin as investment and sell it when the price is right, so bitcoin can become digital gold for investment or digital cash for transaction

To some extent Bitcoin needs to be both.  I think that it was only a payment system due to the influx of new money and the high supply of new Bitcoin in the early days.  As time goes on, Bitcoin will require more and more money to be put in for it to be practical, but it will still be practical if you do put that much money in and people will do it so it'll be more like gold.

To some extent, Bitcoin needs the element of digital currency in order to act like gold, because people still need to pass gold between different parties.  Online wallets should be viewed like Goldmoney or something that holds your gold for you because you don't feel like you can handle it yourself.

If you ask a early adopter, you mostly get the answer " Digital Gold " .... but many people hold firm that Bitcoin is supposed to be

a alternative for cash, or a Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System. I use both the currency token and also the store of value

feature, because you can do both.  8)

i think bitcoin have both function which is a store of value and a payment system because when we don't want to spend our bitcoin, then we can store it in our wallet and the other side, we can spend it for replace existing payment system that we know in internet. now maybe bitcoin is can not be like gold but in future if bitcoin is raise the new people and the system of bitcoin and blockchain is more effective than now, i think bitcoin will become digital gold and digital cash.

I see bitcoin more as cash than as gold. Well, I can use bitcoin as a transaction tool, so I say that bitcoin is money in internet, not gold from internet. It looks good if we see bitcoin as money, because the profit becomes bigger.

For me its both, soon using bitcoin in bills and other payments will conceptualize bitcoin as cash and the possibility of profit just by saving bitcoin only means it can be slightly considered as gold. Bitcoin has the same features as cash and gold it just don't have enough power to gain control and be considered as global currency, and the features of bitcoin is somehow questionable because of the anonymous transactions, I mean it can be used in many illegal ways.

Bitcoin is a digital cash and not to compares from gold because it's totally different due to gold is a mineral type and bitcoin is money which could be used to transact payments online and it's a unique type of currency. Gold is not a currency and it's just a form of material having precious value and established to be having a price which is sold to the consumers and most people liked to use it as jewelry and collection as well as investments. Digital cash from bitcoin is profitable and can be used for daily living which is for our spending.

There are only two options and you will only pick either digital gold or digital cash and digital playinum is not one of them. About cashing out, yes, bitcoin can't be cash out literally, but it can be comverted to fiat so the user can still use it. But it says digital, cashing out a digital currency is absurd. That is why they are converting it. For me it is a digital gold because, mostly they use it as an asset, most of the users save bitckin and use it when the price is good.

I agree with you, I consider bitcoin like a digital gold. because i think it's a very good investment when we talk to hold it, so most of the users save bitcoin and use it when the price is good like you said. include me, I saving about 60-70% of my monthly income, and use the rest  to buying things or maybe to convert it into fiat.

it's true bitcoin more suitable called digital gold and bitcoin can be used as an investment just like gold. in ancient times gold was used as a means of payment same as bitcoin now. for polls I chose it depend because on the user bitcoin itself what to make.

I chose both because for me, Bitcoin has the characteristics of both cash and Gold. It can be used on remittances and can also be use to buy something in some online shops that accept Bitcoin as a payment. It also has the characteristic of a Gold that its value sometimes increases and sometimes decreases depending on its market.

I voted that Bitcoin represents both digital gold and digital cash, and it's relatively easy to see why I would vote for that (and why a lot of other people also voted for that option). Bitcoin is valuable, it is rare and will likely retain value for a long time, like what you would expect from gold, while it can also be used relatively efficiently through the blockchain network that has been developed and, relatively, a lot of vendors do accept Bitcoin, making Bitcoin similar to a digital cash.

For me bitcoin is a dynamic store of value and an asset to invest. For me bitcoin can fetch a much higher return than any other asset present in the market as on today. I invest in bitcoin because I know and I believe in its potential. Gold is also an asset but it's a physical asset. Gold has many other uses than just an investment. So I really don't want to keep gold and bitcoin in the same position.

Rather, I will say bitcoin is a digital asset with far more potential than gold to perform better than any other asset class. So it is a store of value with dynamic pricing and higher potential. Let me put it that way.

to me i think it can be use as physical cash, we can see that bitcoin s already using as online cash for online shopping in most of online shops, wile in some places it is even usable in offline shops for shopping, so i will like to say that bitcoin is an online cash which can be use for both line as well as offline shopping.

Bitcoin can be used as cash to buy products.
At the same time, since bitcoin price is constantly increasing,it can be stored as a long term investment.thus it may be called as Digital gold.

Bitcoin is created to be a digital currency and use as payment method but it seems people also acknowledge Bitcoin as store of value, meaning it can be a digital gold. With these, I can say Bitcoin is both digital cash and digital gold since the feature Bitcoin both covers the function of this two option.

it has both the property fo digital cash, but also a store of value, because digital cash would not have any store of value, all the fiat currency are the worst thing to hold for a long time, you would only lose money

bitcoin it's like gold that was turned to cash and can be used far more easily than carrying gold around, the similarity is also very obvious, like the mining aspect, probably satoshi was inspired by a variant of gold that do not require trust and was decentralized

Without a level of utility value, bitcoin cannot be a store of value.

what do you mean , bitcoin is accepted in many shop, therefore there is a utility and consequently a store of value

For me, bitcoin is a digital gold and currency because bitcoin is minable the supply is limited and it has stability like gold. So, it would be advisable to store bitcoins and sell it at the right time you could earn 70% profit. But it is also an currency supposedly bitcoin is an alternative payment method which you can pay anonymously without entering your personal info and your bank details to avoid the hackers stealing your info which is good.

On the contrary of what people think, bitcoin has infinite supply. All those altcoins popping up every day are side chains of bitcoin. They do exactly what bitcoin does. So bitcoin differs from gold in this matter. Gold has a limited supply as long as a meteorite comes from space. That doesn't happen so frequently  8)

Bitcoin could have been gold if it was closed source but it takes most of its power for being open source ironically.

It can be either digital gold or digital cash. If you're into it nvestment and buying great amount of Bitcoin and store it waiting for it's price to hike up then you can considered it as a digital gold.

And since Bitcoin is being used in millions of transactions and some stores are accepting it as a mode of payment, undoubtedly you are using Bitcoin as a digital cash.

I think that i would rather compare such a precious cryptocurrency more to digital gold than digital cash, because of some reasons.

First is that the bitcoin price has grown higher than gold price, so we passed an important moment when something "virtual" is more expensive than such a rare metal

Secondly we need to remember that BTC is crypto #1, and the rest of cryptos(altcoins) have their value but the bitcoin can be considered also as "gold" in this community.

It is more like digital gold in my opinion.

It's a multi functional tool. People have the freedom to use Bitcoin how they want. That's why it really annoys me if people say 'Bitcoin isn't meant for this or that'. Mind your own business!

On topic, In my opinion, I think that Bitcoin is both – a store of value and digital cash. While bitcoin is serving as a long-term investment (i.e., digital gold), it also offers a great payment method within itself (i.e., digital cash).

How about neither and both at the same time.

Far in the future I think we will see bitcoin server as gold and some other alt coin like DASH or Litecoin serving as quick spending money.

IMHO unless bitcoin can get its act together, it will ultimately end up as a vehicle of long term storage of value, transfer of wealth, and payment for large value items like homes, businesses, insurance payments and the like. Bitcoin works great, as is, for those purposes. Dash and Litecoin would be great as day to day spending tools. Both Dash and or Litecoin will be valued against bitcoin or gold instead of Fiat. Each coin will serve its unique role. Gold/Bitcoin shall be the Base, Dash/Litecoin shall be the currency used to buy goods from the grocery store. Ethereum will be the mechanism driving and controlling the business world. All other altcoins will be valued against Gold/Bitcoin.

Once we start valuing ALL altcoins against bitcoin or gold, we will truly see the value of bitcoin stabilize and become rock solid.

bitcoin it's like gold that was turned to cash and can be used far more easily than carrying gold around, the similarity is also very obvious, like the mining aspect, probably satoshi was inspired by a variant of gold that do not require trust and was decentralized

Without a level of utility value, bitcoin cannot be a store of value.

what do you mean , bitcoin is accepted in many shop, therefore there is a utility and consequently a store of value
to me i think bitcoin is a digital cash, as we have the opportunities to use bitcoin for online shopping while in some place we also have the facilities to use bitcoin for shopping in our local shops without changing it in to fiat currency. although i most of the areas the facilities of bitcoin to use it as fiat in local shops is not available and the reason is that there the users of bitcoin are not enough so that they can attract the shopkeepers to start accepting bitcoin for shopping, but still we are hopeful that when the users of bitcoin will increase there then the shopkeepers will start accepting bitcoins  for shopping.

It's both, but I believe bitcoin is mostly a store of value.  In fact I think it sucks as a currency, and I've said that before many times.  Confirmation times suck, the fees suck, the irreversibility sucks.  You name it, it sucks.  EXCEPT in the dark markets and at the casinos.  Those two places it's great as money and works well.  But try to actually go to a merchant and pay for something with bitcoin.  Not gonna happen in the real world, and I think most people are realizing that fiat money works so much better.

As a store of value, it's great, and if you're a Pakistani worker in the US it's fantastic to send across borders.  I bet most people who do that never, ever actually spend bitcoin.

it is both,
it has always been both,
it will always remain both or it would no longer be bitcoin.

and that is the beauty of it. you can use it as a currency as it was supposed to from the day it was created, but since it is unique and it is secure and also there is a very limited supply it becomes a good investment too, as gold if you like to call it.

The thing with bitcoin is it cannot be boxed as only a kind of digital cash because more people are considering it as an investment so it is as well a store of value. It is both digital gold and digital cash because of the features it possesses but many use it as a form of investment rather than as a payment method, because of the increasing transaction fees associated with it.

Nothing in the world is anonymous, with the currently technology some countries have they can discover anything about anyone if they want and I think it's not a advantage of BTC as it's inexistent. Bitcoin is money like any other currency, but digital. People are using it "like gold" to increase their fortune on long term, but it can be used to buy anything.

Bitcoin was mainly created to free people from banking sectors. At first, bitcoin was used only as a digital currency. Then its value started rising and people found it as an asset instead to invest in a long term basis.Hence,it could be called as Digital Gold.In the mean time, bitcoin can be used to buy any products or services and hence it could be also called as Digital cash.

I guess that's not the main goal in the development of the main bitcoin, indicated that his advantage is bitcoin is much better than currency and other systems. Bitcoin is indeed a bank run by every person who has it, but I'm not sure that everyone already does not use original currency in each transaction. Because only the money in every country that would legally have the authority or may be used in any country.

In my own opinion, bitcoin is both digital gold and cash because it can do both. Bitcoin is digital gold because its value is always going up every year and we can see that and it is digital cash because a lot of stores from the different parts of the world already accepted bitcoin as another type of payment method when you are buying items or service to them. So there is no doubt that bitcoin can do both.

Cash is anonymous only in p2p environment. So you are going to tell me that you are not using any 3rd party service to process your fiat payments?
You don't have a bank account, you receive your wage directly from your employer in cash form, and no one keeps tabs how much you earn?
Bitcoin was pseudonymous at best, if you want full privacy there are better altcoins (Zcash, Monero) dedicated to keep your payments confidential.

Some who thinks bitcoin as a digital cash always calls for its transaction fees to be reduced so that minor purchases could be easily made with bitcoins. But at the same time, users who think bitcoin as digital gold says its security is main and it should not be compromised.Satoshi mostly called bitcoin as digital cash and at some occasions later, he used gold's aspects to explain about bitcoin.

It leads us to the conclusions, that the biggest affair about bitcoin is that we cannot really use it well as a "digital cash" because for now, the blockchain is under way too big traffic.
Without solving that issue, we won't be able to call bitcoin as a digital cash, and the reason is very simple: regular cash is available to transfer to any bank, anywhere at any moment pretty much (but in fact, the remittance will be done during the working day)basically without paying any fee,  and you can also withdraw it any time you want.

But with BTC you cannot withdraw it insantly, because you need to wait for the confirmations, plus you need to wait for a bank transfer.
You cannot also send it into other wallet without paying the commision, and waiting at least some time, to get the confirmations.

I would call it only as a digital gold for now.

Yes, for now and maybe for a long time as people tend to save their bitcoin and using fiat money for daily transaction.
I think, bitcoin being used as online currency to send it out the country which consider as good option to do that.
Another option is convert bitcoin into fiat money, and it is categorized as digital gold to store of value.

When Bitcoin just started, the people that were using it didn't really know how expensive Bitcoin would be mostly because they didn't know how many people will be using Bitcoin for payments.
Bitcoin is not really something that is going to replace the Currency system, it could cause the Currency system to have a little bit of a downtrend though the whole Bitcoin Project was just so that Bitcoin would be noticed more as a collectible item.

Title: Re: Is Bitcoin digital gold or digital cash?

Well, you can't sell it as both. There's only one way: digital gold. Big blocks kill the digital gold feature, which kill the digital cash feature too (you can have digital cash when digital gold is not an option), since big blocks centralize the network.

With conservative blocks, you can get digital gold, and you can build on top a second layer, which is debatable if it would be considered digital cash or not, but it's definitely more private than traditional payment systems and fiat currencies.

I agree somewhat on your opinion about (too) big blocks, but your conclusion, for me, is wrong.

It's actually the other way around: Bitcoin can only be digital gold if it's also used as a currency ("digital cash"). It is not that important how it's used (e.g. if used in supermarkets or mainly for transactions) but it should cover as many use cases as possible. (Micropayments, for example, is not really an important on-chain use case and for this case I think LN is better).

The reason is that for the "digital gold" feature Bitcoin needs at least a certain level of value/price stability. Stability can come from usage (as a currency) and liquidity. If there is no usage and liquidity its value will be vulnerable to speculation attacks, because Bitcoin itself is not "backed" by anything but its users themselves. The more users and the more usage, the more stable it can be.

What to do, then, if bigger blocks are not desired? There is no single answer, but LN, pegged sidechains, extension blocks and on-chain density improvements (without too big blocks) are as well needed as a gradual and conservative block size increase (17% per year as in BIP 103 is a good orientation point although I don't like the automatism behind this proposal).

PS: I voted for "Both" and although I don't agree to the full post of the OP, I think this phrase is worth a quote:

Bitcoin's value depends mainly on how many people can safely use it, and if it's not in use by the largest number of people possible, it will not achieve it's full potential/value.

You are saying that most of the bitcoin community use it only in investment purposes, but that is not true.
You can find many articles in cryptocurrency news websites where it is said that someone bought e.g car or a whole company.
I would also tell that still, the things are you talking about can be defined as a digital gold, which is because you also use this precious metal to invest your money, and most likely get returns.

So i think that you may consider bitcoin as a digital gold, because you may just simply get great profits on both of the assets just by holding them.

Digital Cash, Digital Gold simply wouldn't work based on the simple narrative of that Gold can't really be used as cash in anyway in person at all while cash can be used to buy things like it's meant to do.

Mining Process is something that I wouldn't really compare as one is a computer solving problems to confirm legitimacy and another is ACTUALLY MINING with machines and such.

It's an asset class having features of both a currency and a store of value.
In essence it is both digital gold and digital cash even with the sizing and transaction debate the focus is on a store of value but people still use it as a means of cash.
Of course if the fees outweigh the costs of doing that for a long period of time then it hits a bottleneck and the transactions will transition elsewhere leaving the store of value and asset class as the heaviest leaning.

Bitcoin can be used as cash to buy products.
At the same time, since bitcoin price is constantly increasing,it can be stored as a long term investment.thus it may be called as Digital gold.

BItcoin is a digital gold and digital cash  digital gold because like a gold it has its own mining reg like gold in mining and also a digital cash you can buy in many store by just using bitcoin and also we know that bitcoin was so successful and the price is already a thousand dollars so you can start investing in it so you can also sell bitcoin for cash.

I too think bitcoins got a good potential, but I will never grade it more than gold, not in terms of market price but to hold it for a long term. Gold is gold and nothing can replace it. Bitcoin is another good option for an investment since its prices are more volatile so I don't want to keep more money in bitcoins. Because it has a chance of going up and down quite fast so I will invest more in gold and less in bitcoin.

You don't need to treat bitcoin as literal digital gold because we all know that bitcoin is just LIKE gold but digital version because it is increasing every year and its price is expensive like gold and they are both good for long term. So i think it is considerable for bitcoin to call it gold v2 (Virtual Edition). But the only thing that bitcoin made different from the gold is, we can use it like cash also.

Bitcoin is like gold because it will increase or decrease of its value sometimes. It will has be a high value and low value. It will keep as gold and will preserve for the future.

yes bitcoin is like gold because the gold is valuable metal due to its price, as it has the highest price and increasing day by day.as we know that bitcoin price is also increasing and has very high value as gold,so for me it is gold which people can preserve it and can sell it at high price.

It cannot be the dominant crypto as digital gold only without being a payment system (digital cash).

The reason for this is that there is too much competition from other cryptocurrencies.
If Bitcoin can't be useful as widespread payment method, it will lose a lot of demand,
which will lead to lower prices, which leads to less mining revenue, which leads to
less security, and thus taking away the only thing that would make it digital gold
in the first place absent high utility as payment method.

In other words, why would anyone use Bitcoin when another crypto could offer
high security AND low fees?   I'm sure some people would still use bitcoin even
if it had high fees and slow transactions, but it wouldn't stay on top and have
high security or a high price.

Why not both ? S payment system and an asset. An asset because it's like gold and goes up in value. Unlike good a currency too. That can be used to directly ourchase things. Bitcoin is so much more then merely a currency and asset.
I agree that. Bitcoin can be both money and investment. It is a good place for investors to keep there money and save it and wait for the price to go up. There is no inflation in Bitcoin and I can guarantee that the prices will always go up

Bitcoin is both digital gold as well as Digital currency. One thing that makes it better than the digital gold or digital cash is it's evolution within the system or technology unlike the commodity value. The value has now getting closer to gold and soon it would cross it growing big.

Exactly once. Bitcoin and gold also have differences on the level of use or profit levels obtained. Gold has always had a stable growth and also the advantages are also quite stable so to can benefit greatly need quite a long time. Unlike the bitcoin where at will have tremendous possibilities. When a person already know well bitcoin, then I am sure when they make investments accounting for or already full with ripe then luck or great profit will always be obtained

yes that is right that bitcoin has both the characteristic. as in some places where the facilities of bitcoin to be use as currency in local shops is available, there bitcoin is a digital cash, in in such area where people are using bitcoin for investment purpose there bitcoin is just like a gold but the different is that bitcoin has more potential to increase as compare to gold.

Bitcoin it is better than gold, while gold can be carried in big quantities with ease you will need to be very lucky to be able to move big quantities of gold over boarders but this is not a problem with bitcoin, you can move huge quantities of it in an USB.

At first, bitcoin was used only as a digital currency. Then its value started rising and people found it as an asset instead to invest in a long term basis. In the mean time, bitcoin can be used to buy any products or services and hence it could be also called as Digital cash. bitcoin it's like gold that was turned to cash and can be used far more easily than carrying gold around, the similarity is also very obvious,

Bitcoin is supposed to do both but at the moment bitcoin is behaving a lot closer to gold than to cash, also bitcoin has a big weakness compared to cash it is not truly anonymous . Bitcoin was pseudonymous at best, if you want full privacy there are better altcoins (Zcash, Monero) dedicated to keep your payments confidential.

That is a wrong move for you, If you are planning to invest again on a certain stock like gold, make sure that you ask yourself first if what you want, a long and safe investment or a short but volatile and high possibility of profit. Then after you answer that then you can easily choose between those two and you will not regret your possible decision.

Bitcoin is supposed to do both but at the moment bitcoin is behaving a lot closer to gold than to cash, also bitcoin has a big weakness compared to cash it is not truly anonymous and that hurts it is usage since if you want to be anonymous you need to use tumbling services.
Like most I do have a bank account and while you recommended the use of altcoins there is no doubt the lack of anonymity features in bitcoin hurt its usage somewhat.
Right now I don’t think that bitcoin is being treated as a digital gold because most people only get bitcoin and store, unlike regular cash they don’t earn and spend it, they treat it as a type of an investment much like people are investing in gold, so my ideas is that bitcoin is going to surpass gold and become the new investment to go with.

After years, when bitcoin will be having stable prices, it may turn as pure digital cash. In between times, we will be having users who will be using bitcoins as both digital cash and digital gold.

There is digital gold currency or DGC or e-gold which is somewhat equivalent to digital cash. On the other hand bitcoin ain't digital gold, but digital cash. Compared to bitcoin, digital gold definitely has much more stability. But as digital cash, bitcoin outweighs DGC because apart from being an investment it cannot be used for wider purposes.

It can be called digital gold. Gold value changes over time, so is the bitcoin. Its more than just virtual currency. It gives us opportunities to earn more and different ways. In the near future, I don't see any obstacles, which can harm its value. But not sure about long term like 50 or 100 years.

Yes bitcoin is a combination because you can use it to buy things and pay bills online or you can hold it just like gold that just after a year you can get at least doubled profit from your investment which is good for people who are tired of risky investments that are available in the market unlike in bitcoin that they can have a peace of mind and up to 90% assurance that they will get profit if they just have patience and keep their coins for long term.

pretty clear when the bitcoin in up trends people used it as investment , they quite confident that the charts bullish and could drive to higher price . but sometimes it's not run as planned , and they just suffering lost. better to use it in daily basis and help bitcoin grow universally by spend it as digital money. it's important too to keep considering bitcoin as digital gold or something.

That is the present situation, yes. But we can talk about utopias, or not? ;)

Your observation that "hodling" is essentially a greater-fools game is totally right. But it is not mandatory that this will stay the same forever. The reason is that Bitcoin, or cryptocurrencies in general, do(es) have some advantages with respect to traditional international money transmitting systems.

So companies making profits of these advantages can extract value from the Bitcoin ecosystem without needing to engage in the greater-fools-game ("hodling"). They simply extract their profits from their customers, like companies do in the traditional fiat-based economy.

There will be a point in the future where Bitcoin hodlers would have to understand that if they want to continue to make profits they must invest in these companies, not only in Bitcoin tokens, because the Bitcoin price cannot grow in an infinite manner. If all people of the world are invested in BTC, then we have reached this "price cap".

It can be considered as both.

Gold is used as a store of value and its price differs from time to time. This complies with bitcoins.
Cash is used to pay for goods/services. Bitcoins are used to do that as well.

So basically it's both of them at the same time and it's some futuristic technology :D

Title: Re: Is Bitcoin digital gold or digital cash?

I have to say that since Bitcoin is a payment system simply because it can be used to purchase goods. If it were like gold, nobody would be able to use it outside of exchange (selling to a vault, mint etc before it can be spent.)

The only reasons for it being considered a store of value is because it's brand new with booming potential waiting to be used alongside price increases.

But gold has lost its application of being a medium of exchange long time before itself but still gold is the most preferred store of value. Similarly bitcoin is now being used for both store of value and for medium of exchange.

Here are all just focused on digital based application of bitcoins but bitcoin can have physical format too hence it is not just digital based asset. It is a type of cash and a variation of gold still it is available in both digital and physical format.

Just like gold, bitcoin can be used as both a store of value and as cash. However, until the speed of transactions is increased dynamically and the increase in unanimity is assured, bitcoin will not become dominant coin of choice for John Q Public. For those reasons, I believe that bitcoin will, because of it's network effect, continue to be the dominant coin of choice for investors, those who are new to cryptocurrency and those who want to pay for high value items. Until bitcoin becomes more like Dash or Litecoin, it will NOT become the coin the public uses the most in day to day business. To me that's great. I like the idea that there will be more than one MONEY that is used all over the planet. UNTIL bitcoin or some other coin becomes the BASE or Reserve Currency to which all others are valued against, NO cryptocurrency will replace FIAT or government issued currency. Mark my words; the central banks will issue there own digital currency. Once that happens, all cryptocurrencies will then have a fight to become the dominant money on the planet. As far as gold vs cash, a fully developed cryptocurrency has the potential to become used as both, but we are a long way from that happening. IMHO

In addition, one can consider BTC being an investment vehicle as well, it s easy to invest and differentiate your investments into various projects.

I really do not think BTC will ever become classic currency, this is something other faster and more developed alts might become.

Maybe there was even the thought that it could increase its worth over time, but surely it was not meant to develope so quickly.
Right now, i see bitcoin to be both, payment and investment.
But the investment aspect is growing more and more.
If that is really a good thing, we will have to wait and see.

Agree with you.
Depend on the person that will use it. I know some people that are just using it for paying bills and other stuff.
Some use it as an investment and some think of it as real money which is just like fiat.
There is no wrong with this choices. It will just depend on each one what they think. I also think there is no right answer here, we have our own opinions.

I also agree that bitcoin will not be the classic currency because there is a lot of altcoins in the market that are keep coming which they improved some of the features of bitcoin.

As for me bitcoin is simply money and not simple money but strong money. In the meaning that it serve to buy everything that can be paid (first) but even a money that in time will have increase in value. So, in other words, serve to pay now but even to be put aside in order to have much more valuable things in the future from it. Then if you call it with several other names but who aim to secure the above functions that depends only from you.

Yes, but still, most people use paypal or their credit cards because the confirmation of the transaction is taking a lot of time as always. Usually we can't still buy goods using bitcoin here in our country, so we just store them and earn profit with them. So for us it is a digital gold.

I think bitcoin is digital cash because you need a wallet to store your bitcoin and if bitcoin is digital gold how can you store it.Some people say that bitcoin is a electronic or digital money.

Yup Bitcoin is a digital cash we need some wallets to store Bitcoins. And we don't have other option to store bitcoin. If it is digital gold, then the storage process will change. And yes it is electronic money we need internet to access this digital currency. without internet we can not access it so we call it BTC is a digital currency.

It has several characteristics. It depends and vary based on the user who make use of it. Most users prefer it as an investment and as a value storage token through which faster transaction in less time too can be done. On the whole bitcoin is simply a success of an innovative technology that can be used anywhere to make functioning effective.

Bitcoin could be both termed as Digital cash and Digital gold.Satoshi created bitcoin as a digital currency to make people transact money without help of banks. In the mean time, bitcoin value grew very fast and many people  started to buy bitcoins as an investment which would give good returns. They started to buy bitcoins instead of gold and hence it could be called as Digital Gold.but at the same time, bitcoin could be used to buy goods.Hence,it could also be called as Digital cash.

You are right sort of the two is the same because it is both digital means online or technology so it only matters with digital cash or gold though if we are talking about cash sort if it is small amount unlike gold sort of big a large investment to earn. On the other hand they are both the same because of the price right now , the price is big, sort of nice investment and also nice to earn some it to make it with your own fiat

You haven't mentioned a single thing that makes Bitcoin look like digital gold. All you say is that the price of Bitcoin is moving, that you can use it as investment option, plus its value goes up and down -- such description fits many things. In my personal experience I use it as a means of payment for my electric bill so that is like digital cash.
On the other hand, I think of it as a commodity like gold. It grows in terms of value and those are large numbers unlike fiat.
You can invest on it and somhow will profit more after a few years.

Well, to be honest, it doesn't seem like a majority of users have a great grasp on economics or making allegories, I won't say I'm amazing at it either but that's mostly what you get when there's an incentive to have quantity of posts with decent quality over high quality. Not that it really matters that much for most users, sadly.

As for Bitcoin being either digital money or digital gold, it fills the niche between the two quite nicely. Definitely not really able to lump Bitcoin into one or the other, as it serves both purposes well.

I use Bitcoin in various ways. It's a store of wealth solution, investment solution, remittance solution. It doesn't matter what label you stick on Bitcoin -- Bitcoin is whatever you want it to be. It's a multi functional tool. People have the freedom to use Bitcoin how they want. That's why it really annoys me if people say 'Bitcoin isn't meant for this or that'. Mind your own business!

Too many naysayers against these digital currency. What has marked in the mind of people is that bitcoin is a currency used in illegal transactions like the Silkroad and it has no future. Even some of my friends are saying that it’s just a scam and it will fade through time. They are giving up in something without giving it a try.
Bitcoin is whatever you want it to be!! Yes, the limits of it is how people will go on with the flow of its usage. If everyone decided that bitcoin will act as a reserve and as a treasure that only be needed when we are pushed into the corner, then it will be hard to be a bitcoin payer here and there while almost everyone is keeping it and it will be hard for us to be a keeper if everyone keeps on spending it. It can be used in a several ways, but you must also keep in mind on how people circulate it. The bottom-line is there are different usage and different opinions of people and different perception on how bitcoin will be at its best use. We’ve got a long way to go and I think whatever way you will use it, there is a brighter road ahead.

I think there are similarities with gold, but it's not digital gold, it's digital cash as it's money used to buy anything other currencies can buy, since the cheap coofee until the expensive plane, boat...
What makes persons believe it's digital gold it's because the bitcoin is profitable on long run, like gold, while another traditional currencies are very stable or are dying on long run.

Responses such as this really expose the flaws of this poll. By comparing bitcoin to gold and cash there must be some qualities of each that you must be talking about. Are we talking about exclusively gold as value storage and cash as a payment method? If so, then you are right about bitcoin becoming more like cash eventually but being like gold in the present. Your point about inflation does not really make much sense, however. Bitcoin is in limited supply while other currencies are not. Regular cash goes through inflation because of the currency it is part of, not because it is cash. That is also beside the point, given that those do not seem to be the qualities being discussed in this thread.

I think Bitcoin is both digital gold and cash, because if you take it as investment then it is like gold and it can be liquidated when ever wanted without any problem like when ever you are in need of fiat currency for expenses then you can sell them in the exchange and full fill your needs. So it is working both type

Bitcoin can be aligned more with cash than with gold. After all, gold, in itself, natural metal. This is how to compare money and naphtha. Gold is now more a commodity than a means of buying and selling.

Bitcoin is still treated as a commodity in etf proposal, I agree with you but if seen as an asset, bitcoin is more towards digital gold, this is my personal understanding though the fact is bitcoin is a very flexible digital money. It doesn't look different but I impose all assets are the same.

Bitcoin is supposed to be a digital currency, or can say digital cash, it should be a medium for payment but with the recent increase in txfee and issue of bitcoin not fit to buy a coffee, bitcoin is now moving to being digital gold.  Bitcoin store of value is awesome, giving profits to those who holds.  So I guess Bitcoin is both digital gold and digital cash.

It's different for each and every person. If you see and use Bitcoin as a form of digital cash, then it's exactly that. If you see and use Bitcoin as digital gold, then it's exactly that.

I fit in the latter category. Bitcoin for me is digital gold, or gold 2.0 as some people like to name it. Bitcoin's advantage is that you enjoy a far higher level of usability compared to gold.

It's easy to move from one place to another anywhere in the world, it's extremely divisible, there is no bulk, fixed supply, and the list goes on. I see only advantages.

You don't need to choose from those two because bitcoin has it all. Bitcoin is digital gold because of its expensive growing price and that is faster than gold growth price and also digital cash because you can use it to pay things online or even bills and bitcoin is also getting accepted in offline stores so it is all around.

I agree with you that bitcoin is both a digital gold and a digital cash. It is a digital gold since it is considered to be a commodity and can be traded and purchased. It is a digital cash since it has the power to purchase things and can be accepted as a form of payment in exchange for goods and services. But in the end it will depend on the user since there is no official and definite description of bitcoin.

Oil and gold can give you a chance to live in luxury, does that mean that oil and gold are digital cash too? Bitcoin is an asset that can help you earn some cash or whatever you want.

"Asset, something valuable that an entity owns, benefits from, or has use of, in generating income.

Bitcoin is considered as digital gold by some because of its characteristics and I'm sure that bitcoin is not digital cash as we know it. Digital cash will be something that's like our bank balance, the balance on Paypal, Skrill, PerfectMoney, etc. Bitcoin can be mined, just like gold. And just like gold, bitcoin is used for its uses (if that makes sense). People give value to bitcoins because of the things that we can do with it.

Just like gold, bitcoin still has a small value right now and it will increase as more people find it valuable. But bitcoin can also act as a digital cash. Bitcoin acts like digital cash whenever we use bitcoin to pay directly for the commodities that we avail.

Pretty much I think the same, when I can use bitcoins to pay for different things, to gamble with it, to exchange it for another currencies on many places, then bitcoin looks more like digital currency then digital gold. I also think that some people see bitcoin as a gold, they keep it safe and they don`t have plans to use it at all, they are just waiting for price to go very high and until then they are just buying and holding, that pretty much reminds on gold.
Definitely bitcoin is something new for this world, and there is no category for bitcoin, you can see it as you like and use it like you wish, one way or another, and both are right.

For some it is digital gold, while some people consider it as a a digital cash. Some people use it as a form of storage and investment due to its price instability. Once the price gets extremely stable (which i doubt), many people will just consider it as a form of digital cash and a way to store their assets.

I don't really like to label Bitcoin as Digital Gold because that term reminds me of the old BitGold system that was floating around the Internet.

Bitcoin is likely to get labeled as a Digital Currency rather than Digital Gold because it is something that has a value on it and it doesn't have to be a physical item.

I think that bitcoin is more suited to the concept of digital gold!
With the development of crypto-currency, governments of different countries will begin issuing their own crypto-currencies. It is natural! Any government will pursue its own interests and will be interested in having control over the currency! But the only thing will remain the same! All these currencies can be converted into bitcoin! As now, in any country you can buy gold for the national currency!  ;)

I do not agree if bitcoin is always associated with perfection of digital gold, because bitcoin can stand alone as a digital currency, gold is only a commodity asset, and that's it. Bitcoin is able to create its own market and exchange assets directly with fiat. Gold has nothing to do with it.

Wow! Nice counter attack!
No doubt bitcoin is more charming investment than gold but its recognition as digital cash is fading day by day. Now it is more a store of value than real moving medium of payment which can be transact between parties without any worry of time and fees. But now situation is worse and without hard fork its difficult to imagine than BTC could revive again as cash.

Bitcoin is more like digital cash who has a value of gold. :D
So its both of them in my opinion.
in fact it a digital cash that we have to use for online shopping and online business etc. but currently as people are using it as investment and for trading purposes therefore if we call it as digital gold it may not be wrong. in fact most of the people still cannot use bitcoin as currency and therefore they are changing it into fiat if they need it and want to use it, bu still to me as we are already using bitcoin for online purposes and hope that very soon we will become able to use in local shops also, as they still need to convince about the acceptance of bitcoin.

For me Bitcoin is both digital gold and digital cash. It has the characteristics of both. It can function as cash because the are establishments and individuals that accept it as a medium of exchange. It also function as gold because its value fluctuates and depends in the market.

Bitcoin is nothing like gold and also nothing like FIAT. But when it comes to value it seems to be superior to gold and has every good attribute that gold has and more.

To be honest it is both, its a form of storage and also a payment method. When comparing it to gold, it is superior as it has every good attribute of gold with the upside of being able to buy stuff with it. It is internet gold which is also usable as a means of paying for a product or service

IMHO, it is both.
I have lined it to commodities already (just for me). Thinking it is more like gold, because I am investing in it.
Maybe because I have never invested with cash. (Some do this) buying USD for their country have a lower value, so they buy the higher ones with much movement.
But as time goes by and with more merchants opening businesses with bitcoin as an option for the payment then it will become digital cash.

People who are smart does not jump into investing into anything when the price is higher, there is a certain element of uncertainty when it comes to all the crypto investment and it is well and good if you could grab them when it was affordable but reaching and holding them when the price is high is just too risky, there are other better investment options out in the world than risking your money.

There is no way it will work.

It's digital gold because we consider the value of bitcoin is good/better than gold on these days. But I consider bitcoin as both things, we are using it for buying things and paying which is the role of a cash/money. When you purchase something that is already giving you an idea that bitcoin is cash, digital cash.

Bitcoin is a complete payment system, this is how it was made and what it was intended to be, The fact it serves as a store of value with volatility and the ability to earn profit trading and hedging it is an additional aspect that does not change it's intentional purpose of a cross-border payment system with no restrictions and central authority.

The best solution for this high fees is to use BTC indirectly, through third party payment processors such as Coinbase or BitPay. Coinbase to Coinbase transfers can give you instant confirmation, and the fees will be quite low. Anyway, I hope that the issue with high fees may be resolved once SegWit2x is activated with more than 80% support.

Proponents of Bitcoin as ‘digital cash’ place more emphasis on the accessibility aspect, arguing that its transaction fees should be low, whereas proponents of Bitcoin as ‘digital gold’ are more focused on its security, arguing that this should not be compromised by efforts to lower costs.

I'd say it's heading towards digital gold and in a way that's a necessary thing. Digital cash does not require the rigour that digital gold does. If you're looking for something cash like all you need is for it to retain some value. Gold requires far more. Bitcoin is the only thing that might just have what it takes to be digital gold.

But as a currency at present it's shit. It costs money to transact and people are incentivised to hold on to it. Both of those factors are diametrically opposed to what a currency should do.

Save the value it does good will but I like digital cash because with so we can process all transactions with ease and can be beneficial also for the present and the future. included in the pambayaran system. as for bitcoin it's also very useful for online transactions and long-term later due to correct what you say that bitcoin will be brighter compared to the actual gold.

When an asset gives you 1,500% returns in 18 months, you can naturally expect noobs to jump in. Everyone dreams about getting rich one day. It is not a crime. The chances are quite low (may be less than 1%), but even then it is worth going for it.

I'd argue that Bitcoin is both in this case and right now. I'm certain we will always have Bitcoin and that whatever comes after that will act more as the cash of the internet will also be paired with BTC. It will be the safest ledger and blockchain that we'll have throughout time most likely and that will be what really matters. Bitcoin is the standard and the protocol that all others will follow.

Bitcoin can't be touched, that's true, but bitcoin mined the same way as gold. Even Satoshi Nakomoto was explaining the idea of bitcoin making analogy with gold in far 2010 year:
"As a thought experiment, imagine there was a base metal as scarce as gold but with the following properties:
- boring grey in colour
- not a good conductor of electricity
- not particularly strong, but not ductile or easily malleable either
- not useful for any practical or ornamental purpose..."

By my opinion bitcoin is both, currency and gold, but it took just some characteristics of this two and completed it all together in it's unique nature.

I think that it is both. If you are think of "Gold" as an investment then you are right as many people are investing their money into Bitcoin. And also it is a form of digital cash/currency in which many online shops now are accepting it as a mode of payment together with some well known payment methods such as visa and Paypal. So I don't think that there can be an argument with this one as it can be both, people who can either spend or invest in one currency is possible according to their personal needs.

precisely, the early emergence of the bitcoin I presume that this also as a much better asset to any investment. Seeing from the technology that brought and also the ease with which they provide, provide a lot of great opportunities for all people to use it. so then the price will be much higher and it is almost the same as investment gold. However a much more aggressive and bitcoin also we have to be ready mentally so as not to get a lot of pressure which will make us have many disadvantages.

Both of them, I think because we can use Bitcoin for both of purposes of Gold and cash. Bitcoin is really usefull for my life.

Bitcoin can be called digital money, but you can not call it digital gold. Gold basically serves as a measure of value. Bitcoin does not perform such a function, and in connection with its virtuality, that is, the lack of materiality, it is possible that it can not perform this function. At the same time, I believe that bitcoin can perform the function of a measure of value, that is, a kind of digital gold for alternative crypto currency.

Bro, please dig any old topics are thread which has comman question and already answered. Then, your assumption about this is wrong. If you are better to invest in bitcoin related businesses it would consider like gold for you.
If you earning in bitcoin related business and just converting into fiat or use as it is regularly means you can consider as digital cash.

to me i will say that bitcoin is a digital currency. because now we are able to use bitcoin for buying and selling online. we can use bitcoin for everything to buy online. but in future i am sure that bitcoin will use as fiat currency because in present time bitcoin is already use as for shopping in local shops and the shopkeepers accept bitcoin for shopping there.

I will little disagree with you. Bitcoin is digital diamond than gold. It’s more precious than gold. Both bitcoin and gold are serving as means of payments and exchange of goods. I believe soon the whole world is going to deal in bitcoins. Its abstract nature makes it easier and safer to use.

Bitcoins right now is be considered as digital gold because bitcoins can be mined is like real gold, but some people consider bitcoins as digital asset because bitcoin's price is always increase day by day. Bitcoins is not digital cash at least at the moments, there are fees transaction sending bitcoins for payment, it is trouble for small amount payment.

Bitcoin is a digital gold due to its limited amount and deflationary feature. Its slowness can't be used for real time trading. But it represents the value, so it is digital gold.

Interesting topic! I just read the book "digital gold'' by Nathaniel Popper and some pioniers in crypto are giving their opinion on this subject. Most of them seems to think of bitcoin as digital gold, which I think is just fine, as long as this project stays decentralized in the long term.

I am not agree with this statement that bitcoin is a digital gold. For the claim of my decision I would like to mention that if you noticed gold has reduced its value although if some one just hold and do not use it. but bitcoin is different its price is growing with the passage of time. Buying gold is just saving your money, while investing in bitcoin is business. You can earn money with bitcoin and not in gold.

I consider bitcoins as a digital gold because of the limited amount and can be used as an asset to be profitable in future .
Bitcoin is also an online cash ( digital currency) as people use it to buy in online sites like games on steam and other things .
So we can see that it also depends on person to person that they want to keep it as a investment or as an asset .

Well as for me should I say both can do, nothing is for sure but in a long run also I can say it is also one of the best assets to be stored, I didn't even used it as for my day to day currency and in daily transactions, but who knows maybe someday we can officially use it.

For me bitcoin is digital cash because you will just convert it and you can cash it out right a way in a bank.
Bitcoins are like cash which can be used in different transactions.
Not just like digital gold, you need to process many papers and things in order to cash it out. Bitcoin is way convenient.

Bitcoin is both gold and cash because you can use bitcoin to buy things either online or offline, if you are using it offline or in physical world then you need to find a seller that accepts bitcoin. Bitcoin is also a gold because it is a great investment just like gold that the price of it goes up as itself goes older.

Bitcoins is given the title of digital gold. It’s just one of its name. People think that gold is very precious. To give this feeling to people regarding bitcoins, they attached the world gold and as it is in digital form, it became digital gold. Bitcoins is simply a crypto currency that is very expensive and beneficial. If I say that it's my black diamond, it simply means I am praising its beauty.

So it is a future currency as we are seeing every thing clear.
I don't think that there any currency in comparison with bitcoin now.
Bitcoin is a digital cash or currency because some people use it in transaction. In addition to that, bitcoin is the new currency and many people says that bitcoin will be our future currency that be widely accepted in other country. I do not completely agree with op's post. I said not completely so I am somewhat convinced but I have some of my point of views too.like I do not think we should always compare new stuff with either gold or cash instead I think crypto currency can be the new categories. like we can now say the product x is suitable with gold, cash or crypto currency. that will make lot more value than just discussing on its dividend. Gold and Cash are used as a Measurement unit so let's use Bitcoin on that scale too.

Indeed that's true. It depends on the way one makes use of it or one uses it and it varies from person to person. I myself use it as an investment and in that way I can say it's like gold for me. I use it to buy some sort of services too so it's currency too for me. So in my opinion based on my personal experience and usage I can say it's both a currency and digital gold too.

Bitcoin is advanced gold since its esteem is continually going up each year and we can see that and it is digital gold in light of the fact that plenty of stores from the diverse parts of the world effectively acknowledged bitcoin as another sort of installment technique when you are purchasing things or administration to them. So there is presumably that bitcoin can digital gold and cash.

Yes, It depends on how you plan to use your bitcoins, if you are planning to invest and hold until you reach your desired market value then you see bitcoin as gold , but if you are using and earning bitcoins monthly or maybe as frequent as you need then you are using it as a digital cash, it is all based on our preferences nevertheless at the end of the day we all know that bitcoin is a valuable resources as much as cash and gold.

It's neither, but it's more gold that cash. It's not cash, you can't spend it everywhere, carry it round with you etc. It's classified as a commodity, it's mined, limited supply etc. so it's more similar to gold. Gold will always have a value though, as a precious metal. Bitcoin does not have that security.

To my understanding it is more of a digital currency because that was the original arm of creating bitcoin. But later due to high demand for bitcoin its value skyrockets and made those earlier investors to have made a lot of money which has made many people to believe that bitcoin serve as a store of value, though I don't blame them on their conclusion.

You don't even have to wait for years any more per the recent rates of increases in its value. I also think it's both a gold and a cash depending on how you relate or apply it in your life. By my opinion, bitcoin is and will remain both, namely, digital gold and digital money. Bitcoins vision came from the cyberpunks movement, which for two decades stood behind the development of digital money, also called digital gold. These two concepts are much more similar than may appear at first glance.

Bitcoin is both digital currency and asset. Bitcoin was originally created as a digital currency that is fast, secure, and decentralized. Bitcoin is peer to peer electronic currency that can be use globally without borders, boundaries or regulations whatsoever. Bitcoin is better than traditional fiat because it's digital, fast, secure, cheaper transaction fees and acceptable worldwide. With bitcoin, sky is only a starting point. ;D

Bitcoin is both a digital gold and a digital cash. Well, not really cash, but a currency. We usually refer to cash if there is an object used as an instrument to represent the value of something such as fiat. It is a digital gold because it can be stored and left for a year or two to have its price increased several times. It can be a digital currency because it can be used as a form of payment.

bitcoin would behave closer to digital gold than digital fiat, given that bitcoin and actual gold share a lot of the same qualities. limited supply, deflationary because of this. fairly liquid in most markets. and if you use small enough transactions, it can even be anon. fiats have an unlimited supply but are supposedly good as the government that is issuing it.

the main difference between gold and bitcoin comes back into play here, the fact that bitcoin is not physical and has no utility outside of a way to pay people. in this way it actual resembles digital cash the most; it is more accepted online (the most likely use of digital payment mediums) than gold (you basically have to convert it).

Without a level of utility value, bitcoin cannot be a store of value

Bitcoin is created as a digital cash and offers solutions  that fiats cannot offer. Since then it was surprising that the value of bitcoin is in an unprecedented rise that its price even surpassed the value of gold. Many big time investors are now keeping bitcoin as it is like gold.

During the upcoming November fork, it is assumed that bitcoin spontaneously splits into two parts: one bitcoin will have more function as a means of payment, and another - a function of storing values. Then, let's see which of them will be responsible for what and what will be. Now bitcoin is on the way to big changes.

It seems it wasn't that long ago that it was trumpeted as both gold and digital cash. With the scaling debate and fee increases though the digital cash angle has taken a backseat to the digital gold narrative

I think this is a digital gold because the value is high and still increasing like gold because cash is not increasing sometimes its increaaing but it is to low compared to bitcoin so for me bitcoin is a digital gold.

Bitcoin is both digital Gold as well as digital Cash. It posses qualities of both currencies. Gold is used as an asset or mode of investment from centuries. Gold is widely accepted irrespective of national boundaries. Bitcoin works on the same platform, it has wide acceptance, and if you see its price graph it is a successful asset. Cash is a world currency; almost every country has its own fiat cash. Bitcoins can be used as a currency in day to day transactions but it requires basic infrastructure like mobile, internet etc. That is why it more popular as an asset rather than currency.

I agree on your opinion that it depends on how everyone as an individual makes use of bitcoin and it can personally see and use as something that can be seen as gold. But on my opinion, I think its both digital gold and digital cash because you can convert bitcoin as local fiat. And you can use it for investing on bitcoin related bussinesses or on trading on another cryptocurrency.

In my opinion Bitcoin is and will be both: digital gold and digital cash

Since bitkoyn performs the function of a means of payment and is a measure of value, it is uniquely a digital money. As for the question of whether bitcoin is digital gold, this concept is rather relative. Bitcoin can be considered as digital gold in the sense that it, like gold, performs the function of storing value. Moreover, due to its shortcomings, bitcoin is less and less used as a means of payment, and given its very high cost, it is increasingly being considered and used as a means of storing value.

Ideally it should be both. But the high fees is hindering its usage as a payment medium. So I would say that Bitcoin is an investment asset which can be used to store your wealth, while other cryptos such as Bitcoin Cash and Ether can be used both as a mode of payment and as an investment asset. The last time I checked, there were around 180K unconfirmed transactions in the Blockchain. It is going to get worse.

I agree with the things that are mentioned. Bitcoin is both or either a digital gold or digital cash. It can be considered as a gold because of its expensive market value which makes it a good asset and investment. It can br called as a digital cash since in the first place, Bitcoin is a digital currency.

Well, for me, on my opnion, I have the perspective that bitcoin can come to be both a digital cash and tend to be a digital gold at the same time. Because for me, bitcoin has already catered the characteristics digital cash and digital gold possesses. It is a digital cash because it is a currency type version of our current money in terms of virtual aspect and a digital gold in the other hand because of the price value that is somewhat the same as gold since the price is fast growing.

I am with the majority of the voters saying that Bitcoin is a store value as well as a payment system. The core values of Bitcoin says that it is a payment system with the better benefits as compared to that of the traditional model of payment transfer but to transfer the value, there must be some value for the units and hence the mutual trust of the bitcoin users community believe that it has some value stored in it and willing to pay a certain amount to buy or transact with it.

I am leaning towards Bitcoin being both digital gold and digital cash. As what have been stated in the previous thread, Bitcoin possesses a dual characteristic that is unique in both assets. It is digital gold because just like gold, its value is highly dependent on its supply and demand. On the other hand, it is digital cash because just like traditional cash, it is accepted as a form of payment. In the same vein, gold is no longer acceptable as a form of payment because such practice has long become obsolete. So you should see from here that it can be argued both ways.

Bitcoin is like a digital and a digital cash i can explain it . bitcoin is like a digital gold because the value of bitcoin is so very high and the demand is limited like gold so thats why the demand is so very high and second bitcoin is like a cash because you can convert it into real money to buy something.

Bitcoin is a coin in the internet or we can say that it is our owned. Bitcoin is the asset that can you keep either sell.

Digital cash and Digital gold is almost the same.

Digital cash was a cash like a fiat that can you use as payment and also bitcoin can do it.
Digital gold is a gold that can you keep and the price was expensive in the longer of time but bitcoin was not because bitcoin is not stable but it is the same as gold because of number supply.

They are the same, gold and cash was use as payment. gold was use as payment before and cash was the present use for payment.

The question whether Bitcoin BTC ought to be digital cash or digital gold represents a false dichotomy: it can be both a secure and accessible form of money. By embracing modularity, the main Bitcoin blockchain can act as a maximally secure settlement layer, while second layer payment channels serve as pipelines for fast, high liquidity transactions.

For me its both, soon using bitcoin in bills and other payments will conceptualize bitcoin as cash and the possibility of profit just by saving bitcoin only means it can be slightly considered as gold.Gold is not a currency and it's just a form of material having precious value and established to be having a price which is sold to the consumers and most people liked to use it as jewelry and collection as well as investments. Digital cash from bitcoin is profitable and can be used for daily living which is for our spending.

For me, bitcoin is a digital gold and currency because bitcoin is minable the supply is limited and it has stability like gold. On the contrary of what people think, bitcoin has infinite supply. All those altcoins popping up every day are side chains of bitcoin. They do exactly what bitcoin does. So bitcoin differs from gold in this matter.

The thing with bitcoin is it cannot be boxed as only a kind of digital cash because more people are considering it as an investment so it is as well a store of value.Nothing in the world is anonymous, with the currently technology some countries have they can discover anything about anyone if they want and I think it's not a advantage of BTC as it's inexistent.

Depend on the person that will use it. I know some people that are just using it for paying bills and other stuff. Some use it as an investment and some think of it as real money which is just like fiat. I also agree that bitcoin will not be the classic currency because there is a lot of altcoins in the market that are keep coming which they improved some of the features of bitcoin.

Your point about inflation does not really make much sense, however.Bitcoin is still treated as a commodity in etf proposal, I agree with you but if seen as an asset, bitcoin is more towards digital gold, this is my personal understanding though the fact is bitcoin is a very flexible digital money.

Bitcoin has a lot of uses. If you are buying a penthouse in Dubai for Bitcoin, which they are selling right now whole apartment blocks in Bitcoin, then  it is cash. If you're saving Bitcoin for a rainy day or to pay for your kid's college fees then it's a store of value. For others it is the technology that is useful as a transaction ledger. It all depends on what you use Bitcoin for. So I voted for the it depends category for now as it has a lot of uses for many different people.

It's just a matter of high transaction fees and long waiting time for confirmation, making bitcoin less suitable for micropayment tools. So its function as investment and commodity is more prominent. In fact, bitcoin can play a double role, as digital gold and digital cash. It's only a matter of time until they can be effective.

What makes persons believe it's digital gold it's because the bitcoin is profitable on long run, like gold, while another traditional currencies are very stable or are dying on long run.

Bitcoin can be termed as either of the terms, bitcoin gold or digital cash as this is something which can help you in having a huge amount of money and that too in no time. In addition to this, bitcoin is also a very good way of investing money and that it can help you earn more profit, in fact far more than any other investment too. It is indeed like gold that could be also use as digital cash so the answer is both. Since bitcoin came across all over the world and gain its popularity and how people embrace bitcoin the result is that it became a digital cash that its price will go high in the period of time. This is where people got the interest in investing bitcoin and thus make alt coins for bitcoin (since bitcoin price is high). These alternative coins are being modify with the accordance on how it is being used or back up. Some altcoins are back up by real estate property and some are on the fundamentals of life like education. This is where I believe that bitschool does it all when it comes to education. You can't compare bitcoin with gold nor with cash. It have there own principle and much difference than a gold.  It is a digital currency or i should say internet cash since there's no form of bitcoins. I mostly use it to make instant transaction with low fee. If we look bitcoin as money it become good since its a profitable currency.

This will create mor millionaires in the future that is the way it will affect the future investments. The bitcoin is very potential asset as we all know. Many projects are being made on the basis of bitcoin and it is no way going down in the future. Just imagine price bitcoin reaching hundred thousand dollar would be precious day in lives of people who are holding coins which are bought today.  This will definitely boost their wealth by hundred to five hundred times as compared to today's investment. So it's really a good approach and we should also get engaged with bitcoin investment. The fate of bitcoin is not decided by anyone, it is on its own and looking at the current potential bitcoin looks undeniable investment for long term investors. The reality will be rewritten in the future if bitcoin works like this forever and keeps growing in the time.

Bitcoin is digital cash, but his potential is very above then the gold, soo some people does use bitcoin to store value against their fiat currency, as well used for saving purposes as well investment at the same time. For me bitcoin is the digital gold, with amazing potencial to grow.

yes, it is far from gold although gold has physical form but bitcoin with the expensive price will be digital gold in the future. maybe bitcoin is a gold in the online life and so far, many people still want to buy bitcoin especially with the price now is down too deep. like gold, bitcoin can use for any purpose but the difference is people still know gold than bitcoin and they still believe to save gold than bitcoin.

Bitcoin is not a digital gold but rather digital cash. Not just because bitcoin price can be differentiated with the value of gold. From the term bit ‘coin’ it means it pertains to cash or coins not gold. But bitcoin can be compared too to gold because in the future the value of bitcoin will be equal or higher than the gold.

How can gold be digital? OK, I can even admit that cash can be digital. However, I suppose that cryptocurrency is something very different - it cannot be compared with gold or usual money. It gives more benefits.

more like digital gold, it never will be used as cash as it keeps being so volatile, besides people dont want to spend their btc because they think it will constantly go up in value. This was propagated by the community with stories like the one with the guy who paid 200000 btc for a pizza, these are hurting the markets right now, and the chance of it ever being used as money

Use something else for that one narrow use case if Bitcoin isn't doing it for you, and support the engineers who are working to make Bitcoin more secure and stable, goddamnit  ;D

yes we can call it both because its very expensive that really we can compare to gold.

Bitcoins and gold have similarities in the sense both are earned by mining but bitcoin does not have physical existence as bitcoin is a peer to peer or network to network transactions carried out all over the world through internet. Both bitcoins and gold are limited in number but the demand is very high making it the most expensive materials in the world.  The price of bitcoins have crossed the price of gold. Bitcoin is highly volatile in nature and so no one will be able to predict the price changes of bitcoins in the crypto market. Bitcoins are the first digital cash which can be transferred to anywhere from any part of the world without a third party involvement like the banks.

Obviously digital cash and the ease with which bitcoin is more obviously very profitable and very useful for everyday life, and the value obtained is much higher than paper money (not just dollars, maybe all currencies), so many are hunting and search for it.

it depends how people use it and where they are really live (which country). because in the some country, bitcoin and other kind cryptocurrency is illegal for Payment system. bitcoin is also less precise if called digital gold, because gold can be regarded as objects that have a prestige value to show to others. it goes against the bitcoin that we can not even see it. after considering from the function and location of my stay. bitcoin is more worth mentioning as a digital investment asset
I agreed. Depending on Bitcoin in each country. At this time, many countries consider Bitcoin to be digital gold, so it is very valuable. Bitcoin is not allowed to exchange, use as currency. But there is still a country like Bitcoin as a social evil, so it is nothing. But in many countries, Bitcoin is a technical currency, digital gold is trusted by the people.

One thing that makes it better than the digital gold or digital cash is it's evolution within the system or technology unlike the commodity value. The value has now getting closer to gold and soon it would cross it growing big.
Yes it will go on that predictions but if that the case, it can be exchange digital gold in goods? I think it can’t be because gold are seen only in real and can only get through mining. But it is way better than Gold. Actually, at this moment, the value of Bitcoin is three times more than a value of Gold.

In my opinion, Bitcoin is or will be digital gold and digital cash.
Satoshi Nakamoto referred bitcoin as "electronic cash" in the Bitcoin white paper, and later referred to Bitcoin as the proposal of Wei Dai B-Money (an anonymous distributed electronic cash system) and Nick. Implementation of the Nick Szabo BitGold proposal. In emails and forum posts, Satoshi Nakamoto compared bitcoin with gold and gold mining in six different situations.
Bitcoin can be used both as a secure value store and as a transaction medium for small payments. This solution is to accept and advocate an ecosystem with a division of labor. Each part of the system can arrange the various parts of the solution in the order of priority.
The question of whether Bitcoin is digital cash or digital gold is a false one: Bitcoin can be a form of currency that is safe and accessible. Through modularization, the Bitcoin main chain will be the most secure settlement layer, while the second-tier payment channel will be used as a channel for fast, highly liquid transactions.

All in all, i think it is better than both cash and gold and has much better features.

if I think, bitcoin can be both, can be made storage of asset value and also as payment system. because the first time bitcoins are created, bitcoin is used to make payments easier, but the growing technology and price, many people use bitcoins for storage of asset values.
different from gold, the price is difficult to ride, and difficult to be used as a means of payment.

I believe so, that bitcoin is a digital gold and a digital cash as well. You can easily invest  as much as you can  and earn profits. A digital gold although it doesn’t have the actual form , it is still precious as gold. You can still sell it more than the value of gold. You can still use bitcoin as cash in any payments of buying things or paying hotel accommodations or even in food chain like in kfc.

Digital settlement and reserve currency.

Payment system. Yes. Store of value. Sure. It can and has many functions.

It can be both since it in the end its value and function is based on its users though right now it is more of an investment because of its market value it is still a currency, its volatility just makes it hard to use as a currency now.

However, gold has long been considered a safe haven for the entire length of civilization. It has been used by all cultures, of all ages, for value and has never fallen to zero in history. I think Bitcoin got the Gold Tag because It is something that you can preserve
That is if you believer in it. It acts as a market stablizer for the entire market.
so even if there are better more technology wise advance coins than bitcoins.
Bitcoin still remains the best because It is like Gold. It is also the Bridge between Fiat and other cryptos
And even if all the world leaders got together to make something better, people will still only trust Bitcoin more
so it has become something like gold even though It is suppose to be used as money so its really both  :)

Most users will say they think it's digital gold. But for me it is digital cash because money is a kind of payment and bitcoin should be a currency that's why it is existing. It aims to be a currency not to be a gold.
