Title: I did it! Traveling with Bitcoin and $100 only
Post by: Ehrhc on September 30, 2017, 08:33:14 AM
My journey started on Sep 21, from Boston to NYC, flight to Egypt then Turkey, back to Boston! Carrying $100 just in case and 3 bitcoins in my wallet!

Fuck If I will ever carry credit card, or cash any more:

1- I used Localbitcoins for cash! Search for best local currency rate!
2- How much I save from credit card fees and Fiat exchanges: $305.
3- Is it safe to deal with Localbitcoins in person overseas? Yes, so amazing nice guys, you are making friends :) Just stay inside your hotel! Don't leave! Don't invite someone to your room! At the lobby.

You should try it! & $100 stayed with me! and I spent less than 1.9 btc in both countries!!!

Both countries are safe, exchange rate to USD is good, and to Bitcoin is great! Do your own research...

Nothing impossible, you just invest right, use the income to do something very unique! You don't live twice!

Sorry to say so, but you must have a shitty credit card deal if that's the case. My debit card has zero fees for international withdrawals, I can't imagine one that has worse fees than the deviation localbitcoins has from actual bitcoin exchange rates.

this is one of my dreams to travel to some other country and take with me only bitcoin on my cell phone or even on some paper wallet and spend it there. although my dream involve spending bitcoin directly not to be forced to convert it to local currency and then pay for stuff.
like paying your hotel, taxi, restaurants,... with bitcoin.

1- I used Localbitcoins for cash! Search for best local currency rate!
2- How much I save from credit card fees and Fiat exchanges: $305.
but how about the price difference? for example if bitcoin is $4300 on localbitcoin I usually find much lower prices that they are buying at. won't that negate the $305 you saved up?

Yeah, Bitcoin can enhance your traveling experience. By coming into contact with local bitcoin users at bitcoin friendly places, travelers will be able to see a different side of the destinations they visit. They will even have the opportunity to bond with the locals over their shared values and opinions on bitcoin.
Next time I travel internationally, I hope I'll be able to leave my credit and debit cards at home. :D

Congrats man! People like you contribute to bitcoin booming.

I was searching the other day for places where to spend bitcoins in my country and I couldn’t find many. Some of them were supposed to accept bitcoins but when I went on to the website I couldn’t find it as a kind of payment accepted.

I suppose I was seeing the glass half empty whereas you saw it half full, so thanks for your optimism.

Save $305 from credit card fees and Fiat exchanges is fantastic.
Thanks for share your experience, will encourage more people to use bitcoin even though it's always fluctuate.
But, as long as there's no bad news which lead to another crash, price fall down over $1000, it will be fine.
Well, if you can share some photos about your journey will be great.

Congratulations and I'll take this as an inspiration, I'm planning to travel with my partner too next year and we both are planning to use Bitcoin and just a little amount of cash in case of emergency but still planning where to travel. We kind of made a plan to travel just somewhere in Asia and hopefully there'd be restaurants who would accept bitcoin as payment.

I think we should not worry travelling without fiat but only bitcoin because it is really accepted globally and consider as normal money or just in case it can always converted into fiat if others would not accept it. Bitcoin is getting more popular and I will not shock if I heard a lot of people using bitcoin as their pocket money while travelling.

Good to know that friend. There will be a time in the future, when such instances will be normal and people will be using the bitcoins for their regular daily needs. As the bitcoins are getting popular; many shops, restaurants and other service providers will start to accept the bitcoins then it will be more easy to roam without fiat currency.

that was awesome experience and apparently you're already proven that bitcoin can be use instead of money and also so popular on the countries which you already visited because i see you hadn't having trouble to made transactions with bitcoin and i think this is good reference for those who want to get vacation and not carrying much money but having bitcoin

With bitcoin it's very convenient to travel and I want to earn a lot of coins to be able to try to do it. It is only necessary to choose those countries in which it is not prohibited.

have you tried direct payments with bitcoins to local businesses? are there any in turkey or egypt?
or only exchange to local currency?
have you checked rate differences between USD -> egypt pounds and BTC->pounds?

How did you do it, bought on those places where BTC where accepted?

I think he's referring to forex fees. If you are using a dollar based credit card and spending in say pounds, you usually get charged a 5% forex fee (they bump up the exchange rate by 5%). And if you are travelling to places like Egypt, they can bump up the exchange rate by as much as 10%. You might not even be aware this is happening unless you check the real exchange rates.

A few questions.

How many days have you been traveling? How many BTC transactions, and how many non BTC transactions?

This would help us understand the value of your experience.

You must've had an awesome time there OP to spend 1.9 bitcoin in less than 9 days hahaha. That aside, i'm really surprised that you did survive with only bitcoins in a country like egypt cause as far as i know egypt is not really up to date with bitcoin payments so it kind of struck me. But the important thing is that you did it. Congratulations.

That's great and a wonderful experience, you should create a blog or an article about your experience so people will read that you can use bitcoin in your travel and daily activities like shopping and  going to a movie and eating in a restaurant you can open a blog in blogspot and it's free

Chase debit card and Wellsfargo credit/debit ! I don't know which bank you use!

Here is my trick with international guys ( Since now i have experience?), most have their number there, you call from your hotel ( free) and say I am at this hotel, would you like to make an exchange ( none said no), not just they showed up, they feel plus you that you are among this exclusive club! and most topic was when it will hit $5000.

Yes, I was carrying my cards ( visa and master card one debit other credit) plus the $100.
Well I was doing small transactions 1 per 2 days ( So I don't cry if while it was going up!).

Plus both Egypt and Turkey kinda cheap for US citizen, or let me reverse it, if you go where locals go and eat plus travel, it will be freakin cheap.
it did cost me $10 a day in Egypt to travel and eat!

You deal with cash face to face, the deal is always close if not match to real time trading! Plus you are dealing with their local currency, Egypt and Turkey don't have tide currency exchange rate! So its dynamic day per day.

No, to be honest, I was doing local exchange face to face, in turkey there are couple of restaurant and stores accepting btc, but i was ehh , get fiat in best rate and go every where!

Yes, the exchange math you do it once! Then you have multiple guys in Egypt and Turkey who will give you real time matching, because you are dealing face to face! And Everyone  was into the experience itself! You know my other fellow BTC holder! its like exclusive club member reunion :)

1- If you withdrawal cash its $5 fees + %5 forex fees.
2- In Egypt I just put the card to see how much i can withdrawal! its 3000 pounds, which is $170 so for every $170 I am paying up to $10...

Turkey same for chase, but withdrawal limit is up, i forgot but something like $400or $600

Money is way to enjoy life! BTC is just making it more exciting fun and chance to meet other awesome guys!

Have you considered a crypto card? I heard the TenX card allows you to withdraw from ATMs in the local currency, but I don't have one and I don't recall seeing any videos of that before. That would be quite useful for as an alternative backup plan to localbitcoins.

1- I used Localbitcoins for cash! Search for best local currency rate!
2- How much I save from credit card fees and Fiat exchanges: $305.
3- Is it save to deal with Localbitcoins in person overseas? Yes, so amazing nice guys, you are making friends :)

You should try it! & $100 stayed with me! and I spent less than 1.9 btc in both countries!!!

The currency difference we have with the currency of the country we visit sometimes becomes a burden in itself. First, sometimes we often experience bad luck where the money changer that we visit give the exchange rate / exchange rate is very bad, so it can cut even up to 10% of the value of our currency. Secondly, there are many fake Money Changer who don't have official permission from the government which is certainly risky when we transact there. and one of the advantages of bitcoin is that we can exchange it with any currency that exists in each country with very cheap fee. so we do not have to worry that unpleasant events will happen to us. So I think traveling with bitcoin is worth to try.

Yes its a good feeling that we don't have to be carrying much physical cash again. Our phone or paper wallets can do the job better

Another good story from the traveller with only bitcoin with him. I have seen stories like this on YouTube also where people actually spent whole month on the bitcoin and they tried to buy food, water and rent hotels with only bitcoin. They were successful too.

With your case I can imagine how localbitcoin might helped you through your long journey. But I'm wondering how much time that might have consumed while making the trade and getting the cash. I mean you might have met people in real but with the meetings fixed at specific point and time. That we can not neglect here because it is in general waste of time. Would love to know more detail story. Share us with more motivational incidences you had.

@Ehrhc That is a wonderful experience and an experience i have never heard in this forum from anyone, hope this encourages people to dare and travel around the world with just bitcoin and use local bitcoins to get the necessary exchange in fiat for the trip,i would say it is a daring trip with just $100 fiat in your hand, either way well done and thanks for sharing your experience.

That sounds awesome! Wish I could do the same. I don't know much about 'Localbitcoins' so could you tell me more about it? Maybe I could use it the next time I travel and save as much as you did from the exchange rates. You really do lose a lot of money there and credit card fees whenever you travel.

This is pretty inspiring for bitcoin users like me and this could encourage others to use bitcoin as well. It would be such a convenience to able to use bitcoin while traveling because you won't have to go through the hassle of exchanging your fiat money to the local currency all the time.

I think if you asked the opinion of bitcointalk's members, before leaving on your trip, on your idea and what you are going to do all the users will give  you negative answers and you will receive enormously negative waves. But thanks to your courage and your determination you have completed an adventure far from being realizable later.

Very inspiring but still unbearable. It is not necessary to spend your bitcoin in that way buddy. I still think that credit card is a necessary thing when you are traveling far away from your country. But, the Bitcoins should be used only when it might be necessary to use it. Most of the credit cards have very low fees and as you mentioned that you used localbitcoins to have exchanged your cash. Then in that case you should also remember that lacalbitcoins users take much higher fees sometimes and thus the loss can be more than you ever thought.

Have you considered a crypto card? I heard the TenX card allows you to withdraw from ATMs in the local currency, but I don't have one and I don't recall seeing any videos of that before. That would be quite useful for as an alternative backup plan to localbitcoins.

Its another card! Why ...When you have people you can meet and exchange? Maybe if it was a country when you can't find someone..sure.

Not at all! First you ask people to come meet you at your hotel lobby! Safety..and There are cams!

Second I just double check the people who are at localbitcoin to see if they are active or not!

Third whole thing didn't consume time, it was the experience itself! So if you add the 30-40 mins in doing research it was worth it!

You are dealing with international guys, who know the rest of us as stuff they see online! And they are much nicer and helpful.

That is actually a great feeling. Currently a lot of places are accepting bitcoin as a method of payment, which makes travelling easier if you are willing to use bitcoins.

I think its safe to use localbitcoins in foreign countries, you just have  to ensure that you will be able to access the cash. Exchanging your bitcoins for PayPal might make it easier.

I should also consider travelling with bitcoins at a later stage, surely it might be an awesome experience. 8)

Exactly the OP needs to give some more details for us to consider if it might also help our own respective course, batter trading just like exchanging Bitcoin for cash in localbitcoins is something risky and you should always agree to meet in an open place in person.

How did you pay for flights and deal with big companies, did they accept Bitcoin or did you exchange for fiat first? It would be pretty amazing if someone had a "last mile" solution for going from crypto to the real world!

I am not into talking much! So it happened, you got the point, you can too enjoy it as BTC is heading back to $4500...

Nothing risky! Stop listening to stupid paid media! People are nicer overseas and more professional than anyone you could meet here! Plus you are not leaving your hotel! I met everyone at the Hotel lobby.

Oh wow, that's pretty damn amazing if it's true. I'm guessing you booked your flights and accommodations beforehand though? I mean, if you're going to backpack and all you have on you is Bitcoins, wouldn't that be a little too risky? I personally try to avoid Localbitcoins if I can on my home country, and I can't imagine having to depend on it on a foreign land, without a roof over my head. I guess it is true that there is a price to pay for convenience, and for the most part, for IRL transactions, Bitcoin is still rather inconvenient.

I would prefer to go the safer route with cash and credit cards, but I guess if I only really needed pocket money for food and souvenirs, only carrying Bitcoins would not be too bad. This story does make me long for the day when Bitcoin is accepted everywhere though.

This is some kind of a test as well if there are many people who are already using bitcoin and as a result, you were able to save some unnecessary fees because of bitcoin. This is an inspiration as well to the people who would like to travel in other country using only bitcoin since bitcoin is use worldwide so there would be possibility that in every place you go, you can spend bitcoin directly to pay or find someone who will buy your bitcoin in exchange of their fiat currency there. Maybe one day, I would try this but for now, I would just accumulate as much as I can.

Of course, right now you still need to convert bitcoin into fiat whenever you want something but in future you should be able to just pay with bitcoin, directly.

You could have actually gotten more bang for your buck if you chose to wait and instead of selling to an offer, create your own offer on localbitcoins. That way, you take advantage of the spread and actually get more than spot price for your coins, instead of being disadvantaged because of the spread.

You sound like you are German. Please, what is wrong with travelling down to Germany? I am curious.

3- Is it save to deal with Localbitcoins in person overseas? Yes, so amazing nice guys, you are making friends :)

Well, it's nice to hear that.

Bitcoin has grown so much from 2012-2013 when people were first amazed that they could even convert bitcoin into real cash. Now, with localbitcoins, paxful, bisq and many others you are able to travel anywhere in the world and get their local currency with bitcoin, without having to resort to high forex conversion spreads that you have otherwise gotten.

Good job, and hope you enjoyed the trip :)

That is great experience! I would love to repeat it. But currently I have another kind important costs, I bought a house like a month ago and now I am doing some renovation inside of the house and it costs. So all my bitcoins are going on that and I think it's also great to have such support as bitcoin gives to me to solve that.

Amazing story.
This will only prove to every disbeliever about the usefulness of bitcoin in the real world. It is not only a thing that can be used through internet and online shopping but can now truly be used almost as a real money.
And i thank everyone responsible for its materialization.

Truly an inspiring story mate and thank you for sharing and giving us idea how to travel with bitcoins only. I think this story should be published to a crypto news website such as cointelegraph.com so that others can see how bitcoin can be truly used outside of investment instrument. Maybe others wo would read this will make the same journey and really document it with video and post it in youtube where it can seen by million bitcoin enthusiast. Thank you as well for sharing and giving us inspiration mate.

Those are definitely some nice savings, I wouldn't have thought that you would've saved that much on fees alone, but exchange rates can be expensive indeed.

You exchanged Bitcoin for cash in Turkey? Did you feel safe at all transactions, I think I would be pretty nervous tbh...
You probably picked sellers with a lot of good reviews, at least I hope so?

You also left when the price dropped significantly, did you panic when you saw the price dropping right before your vacation?

A common question at customs well travelling, is how will you be paying for things or if you have access to funds so that you are not a potential liability on the visit. Most places would still be flagging you by mentioning bitcoin sadly.

That is so cool for you to have been able to do that and its much more interesting to share your escapade and how far bitcoin had gone eben beyond places that are popular in the crypto space. It signal to one effect which is, bitcoin is present in most countries of the world.

The journey might be smooth considering where you are a citizen and the proposed country of destination which might not be same for a foreigner entering America. I have seen people going into the states turned back at point of entry because they don't have enough cash to sustain them for the intended stay. Even with several amount as bitcoin which its yet to be recognised, I doubt if its going to be as easy as you had it.

If you dont count hotel and airline, my whole trip to EGYPT( Food, traveling between, gifts) costed me $275 ( which is almost the fees I would pay with card and currency exchanges)

It is dirt cheap now, but not an ideal holiday destination for Westerners. < Political instability and ISIS are still active in these regions > People I have spoken to, says unemployment & crime increased and the situation on the ground is still very volatile. How did you experience this during your trip?

Did you find any merchants that accepted Bitcoin as a payment option or did you have to convert to fiat, before you could buy or pay for anything?

So, every single online buying of Bitcoin, at all these locations for you, has been at higher than the market price? Plus, you have traded at higher than the market price, plus another 4% because you said you have beaten the ATM fees, and plus 6% to cover the fees that you spent to move Bitcoin into the local exchange. So, localbitcoins has been able to, at all these locations, give you trades to FIAT at $4500 per coin, what it the method of payment that you have been using?

1- Face to Face means you are not even using Localbitcoins, most of these guys have their phone listed! So you call and meet! You send from your wallet to their (bypass Localbitcoins)

2- Face to Face means I am selling and you are buying on real time value.

Well, it is not a shocking scenario for me after all since bitcoin can be really used up into different purpose of usage depending upon the user or the owner of the bitcoin holding he have. Bitcoin usage in western countries you have recently travelled is really in a wide use. Well, it is really interesting that you have kept into yourself the $100 you have and used up bitcoin to prove that bitcoin can be used as a term of payment not just for online purchase but also for travelling.

I think many people using bitcoin should start this trend where you just carry bitcoins to travel the world. I do hope that in years time many countries wilk open their trades for bitcoin. This is s great step for bitcoin.
Well, we are looking forward to travelling like you. This time, we're dreaming of travelling to south korea!

Wow I would like to try this some time! However now, I think this must have been hard given that not everyone are familiar with Bitcoins. Which means that a lot of stores, especially in countries that do not accept yet totally Bitcoin, are not accepting Bitcoins as payments. Maybe in the future there will be the time that majority or all stores will be open and willing to accept Bitcoin payments.

It is nice to hear your story, did you use just bitcoin like, mainly bitcoin in all you purchases or had to trade it to real money. if you just used bitcoin and all, i am impressed as there are a lot of establishments now that accepts bitcoin that it was before, and do airlines accept bitcoin now as well? did not heard about it that much. but this is just an advice, it is up to you whether you will take it or not. Do not just bring a 100$ with you, bitcoin is highly volatile, the next thing you know prices may have dropped insanely so if in case that happens would you still trade your bitcoin for real money or just use the money you have until price gets back up.

3- Is it save to deal with Localbitcoins in person overseas? Yes, so amazing nice guys, you are making friends :)

You should try it! & $100 stayed with me! and I spent less than 1.9 btc in both countries!!!

yes of course you can, as long as you carry bitcoin you do not bring money can go or walk out of country, more in china you can pay all with bitcoin without spending cash.

Wow thats nice to hear bro. Bitcoin is doing good for travellers I guess. You do not need to bring large amounts of money to roam around. You only need is your smart phone with your bitcoin wallet and exchange you bitcoin in their local fiat just like what you did. It is better to have bitcoin with you than cash.

If someone would take trip from April to September there would be a big chance that he would come back even richer in terms of FIAT money :).
That would be a story to tell: I went on vacation for 5 months and earned xxx$ :D

But the amazing thing would be when you don't have to use localbitcoins for all your payments, uses and bills.
Gotta ask, how many vendors throughout your journey actually accepted bitcoin? Any tickets, bookings, restaurants or anything?

what you say can not everyone do, i better keep it ,. probably because you already have a lot of bitcoin or money. but for me bitcoin is very valuable until I collect it piece by piece.

Not everyone can do it but it is nice to know that it can be done in case it is needed besides you do not need to have that bitcoin you could have fiat and before your travel you buy bitcoin and then you take your flight, however I will say that only taking bitcoin to a travel is kind of risky so if you can keep fiat as well.

That's very good but bitcoin is very changeable so sometimes when price is high and you decide to exchange, you can lose some $ like there was fall couple weeks ago. If I understand correctly you where meeting persons face to face to exchange btc? This would help you to save atm withdraw fees? Am I right? On another hand what about XAPO card in such situation? As I know you can usw their card worldwide and atm withdraw has fixed fee.

That is so cool. You should have recorded it and put it into a blog to track your while journey so we can all see and maybe you can make some or all of the money back with ads and stuff. It would be really nice to travel and make money that way. Also open a steem account and post there.

This shows the practical use if Bitcoin. I'm glad people are starting to use it and realize it's full potential.

It was a risky trip in my opinion,i would get a bitcoin based debit card rather than trusting local bitcoins when i am on a trip, either way hope you have a wonderful experience with just hundred dollars in your pocket and the rest being in bitcoin ,the volatility is high and you cannot predict the price and if i am in that situation i would not take that risk.

It's sounds great, traveling with bitcoin and $ 100 only, maybe someday I can follow your trail, traveling to Japan where there are many places that receive payment with bitcoin, if for now I have not been able to do it because my bitcoin amount in my wallet not much and in my country only one city that receive payment with bitcoin, and even then only for hotel, whereas for other purposes still have to use fiat or card, so for now on i only develop bitcoin that i have by trading so later i have enough bitcoin to realize my dream to travelling with bitcoin to Japan

I have always heard people here saying they will spend money on travels or buying for routine life, but I feel your story shall be an inspiration for many of us, who would like to use Bitcoin over cash, just out of curiosity, the prices were preety much fluctuating, did you had a contingency plan, Incase the price went to low. I am sure many will take your story as a example, but not all are lucky to have 3 Bitcoins to spare.

Hahaha I think the backup plan is the $dollar. But that is a bit scary when something like a huge dumping happen and you are in the last stop away from home and needs a lot of money to go back.

This story of yours prove that bitcoin can be use as a substitute from fiat but also proves the the volatile price of bitcoin is really a huge disadvantage. Maybe someday there will be a software that can  freeze the bitcoin value that you want and unfreeze it whenever you want.

Good job dude! However you shouldn't be spending your Bitcoin right now. How will you feel when in 5 years they are quadruple or more of the value right now. Good experience but don't do it again.

Can you guarantee I am going to be alive an 1 hour from now? I bought btc when it was $104! Plus I am investing in Litra, so no matter what i am going to have 5x-10x within 3 months.

Money is way to enjoy life! BTC is just making it more exciting fun and chance to meet other awesome guys!

This I understood you. You have nice concept of living.

Most people would stop themselves from spending BTC but none of us have assurance we'll still be here by the time BTC have higher prices than NOW.

Great you bought BTC early.

I think if you asked the opinion of bitcointalk's members, before leaving on your trip, on your idea and what you are going to do all the users will give  you negative answers and you will receive enormously negative waves. But thanks to your courage and your determination you have completed an adventure far from being realizable later.
You are totally right, and I couldn't agree more with you, but it was an adventure, and it was worth it, I would listen to this forum members couple of years ago, but now! NO! Do then share! But don't ask to do.
Many negative trash waste of time people here now.

You dont have to listen to all those trash and recieve thoe negatives waves, you just need a lot of motivation and determination with a good company in order to have a very funny moments. And remember, the most important thing is to be optimistic about your adventure !!

It's great and inspiring reading experiences like these because it makes us feel more secured in the use of bitcoins. And that the use of bitcoin in traveling is real.

Man, I couldnt get to the next state with 100 bucks in any currency, LOL.

But seriously, this is one of the hidden strengths of bitcoin; being able to travel with your wealth, and being able to convert your wealth to local currency and back again, without having to make foreign currencies cross borders (which can be illegal if you are carrying too much). problem is actually using the local exchange; until adoption is better, you cant assure everywhere you go will have an easily accessible exchange. and the cards that use bitcoin as a balance are usually tied to a certain market; you would incur international transaction fees (but this would be convenient, if the card worked).

best strategy is to already have a bitcoin debit card for the locale you intend to visit ;) you can always just take the unused funds off the card when you are finished.

Congratulations on your trip. But in reality isn't it possible that you probably just got lucky that someone wanted to buy your bitcoin at the time you needed it? Or another possibility is that you posted your selling price too low not to be ignored by someone to buy?

Is this story legit? I mean if you just landed at an airport im assuming you need to get a taxi to a restaurant or somewhere right? Or did someone coincidentally want to buy bitcoin at an airport? Lol. You said you still have the $100 intact and i don't see how when you said you traded with people in restaurants.

What if nobody was buying bitcoin when you landed at the airport? Would you wait for days until someone contacts you for a trade?

I'm not surprised at all. You exchange bitcoin for cash, and then spent it. This would have been interesting if you ONLY carried bitcoin and spent them DIRECTLY, without any exchange, which didn't happen.

We're still in being-discovered stage, showing sign to the new ones that its still not too late to get into crypto-currencies. :)

Wow I'm amazed that you survived travelling to three countries with just 3btc. But before you try to do that next check prehand if there are any bitcoin buyers or sellers in the country you gonna travel to on localbitcoin , cause in some country you won't find any bitcoin sellers or buyers on localbitcoin(Check Ethiopia) So its better if you took a low foreign exchange fee bitcoin debit card . bitcoin debit cards could have saved you a lot of time.

Fuck If I will ever carry credit card, or cash any more:

1- I used Localbitcoins for cash! Search for best local currency rate!
2- How much I save from credit card fees and Fiat exchanges: $305.
3- Is it save to deal with Localbitcoins in person overseas? Yes, so amazing nice guys, you are making friends :)

You should try it! & $100 stayed with me! and I spent less than 1.9 btc in both countries!!!

from your story i have an idea to make a travel agent that will make a traveling package to country that accept bitcoin, so people just bring their bitcoin and traveling

1- Please do read before you say stupid things.
2- Its all about research and planning, it was bold adventure, i  had cash as backup and didn't use.
3- Please do read before you say stupid things.

Wow that is great. By travelling 2 cities with 3 bitcoins and only $100 WOW. This is the new revolution or the new era of cryptocurrency. We can go out now without any fiat money! Hooray for BTC>
This is going to get a lot more common in the future, I think we are going to see a lot more of this kind of travels, I will not be surprised if a daring individual tried the challenge of traveling all around the world using bitcoin only, that will be an amazing journey that I will be very interested in reading if someone tried that.

I really think this is great. However, it's a little difficult to travel anywhere without cash, because not all countries and retailers honor bitcoin for payment. You're lucky you were able to find ways to use your bitcoin for travelling. This sounds like a great idea! I hope someday I can do this.

We need more stories like this. A lot of posts on this forum are about holding bitcoins or trading to get more profit. This thread shows that Bitcoin being used in its intended purpose. Once people start to realize that Bitcoin will replace credit cards and other services, that is when Bitcoin will catch on and go mainstream.

But the amazing thing would be when you don't have to use localbitcoins for all your payments, uses and bills.
Gotta ask, how many vendors throughout your journey actually accepted bitcoin? Any tickets, bookings, restaurants or anything?
You gave new idea to the bitcoin users so that they have no worries to travel across the world putting aside all the worries and all this is just because of blessing of bitcoin, I suggest that traveling companies must accept bitcoins as travel expenses so that they can also expand their business worldwide and this will be also a ease to the user.

That's good to know about your experience though. Could you give more details and specific booking you got from your travels? It's really interesting because I also love to travel but I don't know how to do it first. I mean the things to prepare first and how it goes. I live in Asia but until now I haven't travelled from far places or countries. Since then i keep on hoping that someday I can travel even just one time before I die. I want to live longer so I can travel many places but that only permits my life until when.

The good thing about here was, the maximization of bitcoins truly support him in terms of answering his financial expenses. Almost some countries now are beginning to accept bitcoin as a medium of payment for their services. Your trip is a living example on how an individual can survive and sustain himself when using only bitcoins, and it also saved you from converting it to btc-fiat due to the acceptance of these retailers. Maybe this would encourage some retailers from other countries as well to start accepting bitcoin as payment in order to spread its influence more.

Being able to travel around the globe only carrying small amounts of cash thus not fearing danger that can be caused from it , and just having to use localbitcoins in a very easy , secured and cheaper way ! Yeah, we all will like to try it not only for the adventure but because that will mean that we are so well off economically that we can afford such a trip, at this moment I do not have the funds to even travel within my own country but I will do my best effort to keep getting as much bitcoin as I can.

I recomend Bali is great. Bali is the land of Bitcoin. The biggest exchanger of indonesian bitcoin is located in Bali bitcoin.co.id . There are many hotels and restaurants accept bitcoin. Even small stores of merchandise in Bali accept bitcoin payment. YOu can buy flight from your country with bitcoin.

That's an awesome idea. With the Internet, you have access to any service or vacation trip that can be booked. On LocalBitcoins you will be able to access any local Fiat currency on demand. The cool part is that you get to meet locals who also enjoy the idea of Bitcoin and the prospect of digital currency as you exchange currency within each country.

I would love to stack up Bitcoins and travel with it. I feel like it would be incredibly fun discovering new things to do and services you can book with BTC. Only thing you need now is an AirBnb that accepts Bitcoin.

Interesting story. It would be nice to get more information. Which cities in Egypt and Turkey did you visit and where did you meet those Localbitcoins dealers? I think situation may be very different in a 5-star hotel in the capital and in a small remote town. And it depends on the country. In the city where I live (about 400,000 people) there is not a single place where I can spend or exchange bitcoins. It is possible to exchange bitcoins to local currency online for a local, but it would be near impossible for a foreigner.

That's the kind of convenience btc usage can offer to people all over the world. I don't really get why some governments would deprive citizens of this convenience and would simply prefer to have control over crypto or no crypto at all. If you're thinking about your constituents, then you should let people be if they want to use bitcoins

That means to confirm that you still need fiat in order for you to be able to survive when travelling especially to territories you are not quite familiar with. Bitcoin alone does not suffice for now. But I am very happy to hear that there are sites in which you can easily convert your bitcoin into the local fiat currency.

True, not only he got to see all those beautiful places but because of bitcoin he even saved some money, not much mind you, but hey, your money is better if it stays in your pocket than if it goes to fill the pocket of an anonymous banker, besides you could use that money for other things like invest in altcoins and repeat the process all over gain.

good, you made it..
if I had 2 Bitcoin in the wallet, surely I will try what you do this..  :D
and this has become an inspiration to me ..
While I like what the OP did, if I had 2 BTC I will keep them have you seen the price of bitcoin lately is going up and it has surpassed already the 5k barrier so while this is an inspiration unless you have 100 BTC stored you need to keep every single bitcoin so in the future you can make 10 travels like those with the same BTC.

Guys here are asking how and shouldn't you hold btc forever! You lost the btc you spent!
Ok...Calm down!

First of all is btc to hold forever? Or to enjoy holding spending?

Second I am an investors! I made couple of very good ICO investments, and now I am holding a very decent share at Litra Coin.
YOU should buy into https://www.LITRA.site (https://www.LITRA.site) before you start crying!

Third if anyone here can guarantee he will be a live in the next hour! Let me know!

Fourth: The experience itself, worths every btc i spent! I have something unique and very exclusive to share! Not a lot of people can say I did that...And you should do the same!

Yes, I AM promoting Litra coin to be invested in and you should INVEST if you understand the mass adoption!
You can go and read my posts about BTC reaching $4500 and more this year! ( When everyone was sayin no it will not!)

Congrats for having the guts for this and for becoming a success!
I agree, there has to be a balance between the investment and the spent Bitcoin. I guess that many people here just hold with the hope that the small amounts earned will get a decent retirement fund someday.

Good luck with the future investments and maybe you teach us more about having success ;)

Great !
This is really happening.
The world is no more CASHLESS, is SHITLESS.

Too strong power have been controlling the fee world for decades, earning too much money and not prevent any fraud or other such thing. With BTC now you have the power to change it - like you DID.

We like community have the duty to spread its power to the world and make it use it more and more

3- Is it save to deal with Localbitcoins in person overseas? Yes, so amazing nice guys, you are making friends :)

You should try it! & $100 stayed with me! and I spent less than 1.9 btc in both countries!!!

This is how much bitcoin community/users trusts bitcoin, you have made a great example of trust.
I appreciate your mind that how you avoid the money eater fiat exchanges and credit cards fees, i also want to do it if i ever get a chance to travel to any other state.

Stories like this aren't new but still I'm being inspired by it. Bitcoin has never really failed someone who gambled for situations like this  :D. And so far bitcoin is really having a show, and it has been proved that it can be somehow an alternative of fiat. Because of the decentralization of bitcoin, it is very ideal to be used as an alternative to ease traditional fees from middleman and some traditional fees from banking companies. So the future is bright not only for bitcoin but for all cryptocurrencies.

Bringing only bitcoin with you shows it is the most safest way in traveling because you might lost your paper money and credit cards in the streets from the bad guys thru stealing and trickster in which it might put you're life in danger. Avoiding credit card charging fees and interest are also a great factor and an excellent idea of not using them, you experiences just prove us that we could use bitcoin anytime and anywhere without hesitation.

You don't need me to go in details, just you know it can be done, it was done with someone exactly like you! You sit down... plan and go!

It is your money so you can do whatever you want with it and since you seem to have a good amount of money in altcoins and bitcoin then that is a luxury that you can afford, you must understand that most people in the forum do not have that much bitcoin and that is why they will say they are going to prefer to save that bitcoin instead of spending it.

Great story for sure. It is experiences like these that need to be marketed in an organic way to the masses. Main stream needs to understand the material benefits that BTC offers to our everyday lives. It is the best counter to attacks on the concept by banks, government and Mr Dimon.

I have been travelling for the last 3 months and have used BTC where possible. Localbitcoins is a fantastic service and i have used it without a problem previously. More stories like this plz!

This really excites me! I've got a three month trip to India comin up and was wondering if it would at all be possible to use crypto instead of fiat! When you say local bitcoins do you mean local people with bitcoin or a company called local bitcoin? Sorry for the dumb question! I just really am hoping to not have to keep exchanging money when going around India and Sri Lanka

Thanks in advance bud

I hope there's a way for me to use btc for my travel there without having to encash it for me to save up from money exchanges.

Just make sure to stay on the capitals, main cities, otherwise there is a risk to lose internet connection as it's not disponible on remote places, especially third world countries... In this case, no internet means no money. Indeed a nice experience, but it's necessary to calculate the details very well before launching yourself on an adventure like this. A good idea for a documentary also... (Travelling around the world with BTCs).

Good for you for making Bitcoin work for you. This truly is freedom. And exploiting the exchange rate. Using localbitcoins is a stroke of genius. We will bear that in mind.

It is not a dream travelling with BTC. You can think that you are travelling with your own bank like your credit card. I saw a topic in this forum about the restaurants and hotels that BTC obtain. Therefore ıt will be easier in the future travelling with BTC. Congratulations.  ;)

Lucky you! Don't you feel a little bit angry that Bitcoin value has increases a lot? You could have earned almost $2000 on 1 BTC, it would give you about $4000! I don't like spending my BTC and that's why I can't understand people like you. It must have been a nice experience but you could have earned a lot of money by hodling it just a bit more.

And I would be so sad if it did $1500 per btc!
But at that moment, at that time , it was worth $10000 per btc for me!
Thats what you who question it still don't get ..THE EXPERIENCE OF TRAVELING WITH BTC AS YOUR MAIN SOURCE OF SPENDING.

Perfectly replied we are saving bitcoin for future expenses and when you can travel using btc and experiencing this awesome journey is more worthy then what bitcoin value is. If you just save and save and suddenly one day you die then what is the use of savings of bitcoins you have done when you cannot enjoy when ever you want. So when ever you get to enjoy your life you can just go with bitcoins.

Sorry to say so, but you must have a shitty credit card deal if that's the case. My debit card has zero fees for international withdrawals, I can't imagine one that has worse fees than the deviation localbitcoins has from actual bitcoin exchange rates.

Haha this is exactly what I thought - I get Mastercard standard rate on one, and Visa rate on the other. Never pay for transactions or withdrawals, always zero fees. If you're travelling and don't have a zero fee card then you're travelling wrong.

That's another proof that Bitcoin can replace FIAT and we can leave just using it and the best part that it can be used everywhere without paying any taxes so it's a 100% win.
Next time try to travel and do not take any FIAT with you and tell us about your experience. Such stories are really inspiring and bring more trust to crypto world.
I believe many members here will do the same when they travel without fear.

Thats a nice history, but i wouldnt use bitcoin for traveling unless i get some good steady of income that will let me get back those 2 bitcoins you spent. Sure its good to see a person being able to travel using bitcoin, and exchanging it into local currencie, but the fact is would be better if you were able to make those all without the need of exchange, but well im sure one day we will reach those patamar,  even knowing that you could used a bitcoin debit card for those as well.

I think that the use of bitcoins in traveling will bring great experience. We all know that bitcoin is decentralised and canvassing cost may be made easier when services can be paid directly in bitcoins.
It's great and inspiring reading experiences like these because it makes us feel more secured in the use of bitcoins. And that the use of bitcoin in traveling is real.

It's very cool that you decided on such a bold journey. I also think about it, but it's much safer for me to travel with dollars, although it's very inconvenient to look for exchangers. Your example inspires me, and maybe I will also decide on such a bold move. For me it will be a new look at bitcoin, and in general the world.

Users have described it as an proof for fiat getting replaced with bitcoin. I never believe that this is gonna happen in the near future or later. Traveling with bitcoin is simply a hard task, but the self interest easily makes the user find different such services found around for different needs.

DON'T! INDIA is not as Turkey or Egypt! You will have very hard time finding guys there to exchange with in cash! Maybe if you stick in NewDelhi, I did my research before planning my trip...My advice DON'T.

But places like Malaysia, Thailand,...South Korea, China, Japan...Go a head.

With bitcoin it's very convenient to travel and I want to earn a lot of coins to be able to try to do it. It is only necessary to choose those countries in which it is not prohibited.

Yes,same here I want to earn and save up more bitcoin because I also want to travel with my family soon. Probably Japan since its legal and they are accepting bitcoin there. The OPs story is an inspiration for many of us since its a prof that we can now travel anywhere without spending much in fiats as long as we have a lot of bitcoins.

I really think that this is possible especially now because bitcoin price is too high. You can possibly stay in a high class hotel and travel anywhere you want for a month with just one bitcoin. It's really convenient and good to have bitcoin because you can easily do transactions and at the same time earn as bitcoin price increases.

You are lucky because the price fluctuates so badly. Who knows whether your 100 Dollars will turn into 300 Dollars or into 10 Dollars. Obviously it is never advisable to travel with Bitcoin alone and not use any form of FIAT currency. I wouldn't suggest anyone to ever do it. You are just risking your life and might get stranded if you do not find people who would accept bitcoin as a mode of payment.

It's great that you manage that. In my country are devices in stores and it's included that you can pay with bitcoin, but at the moment the system does not work in any store. I do not have bitcoin, considering that I'm at the beginning and I'm trying to win one, because buying it is harder considering how much it has grown in the past few months, but I know someone who has Bitcoin and has not managed to make Bitcoin transaction.

I have heard from several people that they will only travel with bitcoin now. They travel to the middle east and and Europe frequently and said using bitcoin is much easier than trying to figure out which country uses which fiat, They said it makes traveling abroad much more fun not having to worry about carrying money on them and exchanging fiat everywhere they go. I myself do not travel much but if I ever decide to I'll be sure to bring my ledger with me, or get one of those BTC credit cards.

Maybe in the future there will be the time that majority or all stores will be open and willing to accept Bitcoin payments.

First of all, I did not like localbitcoin Much and it makes complete sense traders try to make a profit so they have their own prices and it's hard to get a cheap deal in there, but it seems you got one. For the second. I do not even like banks and their credit cards and I agree that they do charge a lot of tax but I do not expect them to charge more than local bitcoin. And on the last, it feels good that someone can enjoy by relying on Bitcoins without cash.

I hear enough from inhabitants that it is not money, but the situations like this are proving that it's not true. As I can see, you cope with bitcoins without cash, that means a lot, if we globalize, more and more people will use it. But we can't do it now, because btc is speculated now very much and we need some regulations, because we don't want to buy coffee some day at price 5$ and the other day at 50$.

I wish more places will be covered with cryptocurency and the number of establishments and industries that supports cryptocurrency will increase in the next years to come. I hope I can live in that society where cryptos are as common as fiat and as important to the society as well.

I am not that shock that you have possibly travelled with just $100 regular money in hand and the rest depends on the amount of Bitcoin you certainly have into your wallet because that was already possible nowadays since there are already many business establishments in different countries who have already accepted and legalized Bitcoin usage who accepts it as a term of payment for goods and services they have offered especially now that the price is totally rising and they better know that accepting it will be a great chance for them to earn larger amount once it hits up the high price during the pump. So practically speaking, it is really possible travelling into different places bringing just $100 in hand and all depends on the value you have into your virtual wallet but still depends on the place you wish to travel if it accepts Bitcoin or not.

I hope I can also travel using bitcoin someday. The amount of money that I earned since I started trading is enough for me to travel. But I always exchange it into fiat before buying something or going anywhere. I still cannot go out without cash on hand and in bank (ATM). I'm a prudent person, I always make sure that I have enough cash for everything I need. I also have an advance plan to where will I spend my money. So travelling with bitcoin is like travelling with uncertain amount of money, it may rise or fall in just a matter of hours, even minutes. But I like that idea, it's also smart to have an extra pocket money in case of emergency.

This is a very good achievement, you probably already have pretty good knowledge of financial investment and cryptocurrency. This market is not as easy as it seems to be, so the success of this market with small money is a great thing. If you can share your investment for everyone to exchange.

I wish I could do this soon and prove to my friends that bitcoin can be used not only limited to online shopping. This is a good example of a great bitcoiner who achieved and showed to all of us of that there is more in cryptocurrency. I think more stories like this will be told and I am excited to here them. And of course, I am also excited when the time comes that I will experience this.

I am surprised by this story because it is true that the btc = currency but is not easy to change especially if you are traveling, you do not know the places, the language and so on. If it really happened then the spread of the btc is better than I thought.

You are the proof it's possible. Although it takes some more efforts and organization and to inform yourself well.
Personaly I'm a bit more relaxed and confortable, especialy when traveling and that is the reason why I use my Bitcoin through debit card. It's far more convenient because I don't have to think where is Bitcoin accepted or not and I can pay everything with my coins, including hotels and I don't need any other money or card.

It's very encouraging to see people spend their bitcoin and not need to use the cash. Like I myself don't make any real fiat money anyway because I don't have a job and I rely only on crypto earnings I get from a bit of trading etc and a few bounty jobs. I am wondering though with the whale manipulation going on if it is still table enough to survive in this Industry.

And i thank everyone responsible for its materialization.

Well I have read a lot of people saying that it is great to travel with your Bitcoins with you, as per them just like on the post, it is safer and more convinient. I believe that, but I personally haven't done it and to be honet I don't think if I will ever use mg Bitcoins as a payment regardless if its abroad or not, I just can't see my self using it as a payment, its value ios simple so big that I would rather use it as an asset in mg trading and investment and not as a mode of payment. That is just for me.

Exchange rates are very high over here in my country, you can’t always rely on the local exchanges available as they mostly run out of cash to pay or buy bitcoin from owners. Some other times the exchangers accumulate more bitcoin to an extent that they need to Cato buying and rather sell off before they buy again. These time last usually get irritating. I wished things were as smooth as they are at your end. Congrats on your practical use of bitcoin.

Because bitcoin is not only gained in a easy way. With that this must be use wisely and in a proper way. For now I think that it`s a risky adventure to travel with only $100 and 3 Bitcoins.  :) It should be mentioned that cash and creedit cards are accepted worldwide and e-currencies are not that widespread and suddenly you may find yourself get lost in the middle of nowhere.  ;) To avoid such risks you`d better rely on traditional, fiat money for now.  :)

I am holding onto my btc till it hits at least 100k, then I may start cashing out little by little. It's not smart spending your btc now because it has the potential to be worth a lot lot more soon.

I think before we go to any country, you can withdraw your bitcoin first to your bank account so you can use the ATM of your bank to cash out and you can use that money to buy something while you are in that country. I think if we have much bitcoin, we can try this thing too and we can travel with bitcoin because we can withdraw our bitcoin in localbitcoin or it will better if we have a friend which could help us to withdraw the bitcoin for us.

Stories like this aren't new but still I'm being inspired by it. Bitcoin has never really failed someone who gambled for situations like this  Cheesy. And so far bitcoin is really having a show, and it has been proved that it can be somehow an alternative of fiat. Because of the decentralization of bitcoin, it is very ideal to be used as an alternative to ease traditional fees from middleman and some traditional fees from banking companies.

In our country, some stores are starting to accept bitcoin as payment. I think, in the future, as bitcoin rises, more establishments will consider bitcoin as one of their payment method.

surprisingly and this is one proof if bitcoin becomes one of the most reliable coins, with bitcoin you can use it for anything you want, but you should be careful when using bitcoin for traveling.

With increasing numbers of ATMs, it will become increasingly common. Negotiating p2p will still probably be better for rates and prices, but ATM will be important to provide a guarantee and emergency facilities. Now, something that should already be increasingly common in tourist attractions is Bitcoin's own acceptance as a currency. Unfortunately it seems that we have stagnated and the number of businesses does not grow in the same proportion as before.

One simple thing is anywhere, in any situation ask:
  Do you accept Bitcoin?

With bitcoin it's very convenient to travel and I want to earn a lot of coins to be able to try to do it. It is only necessary to choose those countries in which it is not prohibited.

Part of my goal is to travel with the help of bitcoin.  After studying i am hoping that i can do it someday.  I am doing my best to achieve it and bitcoin is a big help so i can reach my goals.

What a great journey. Saved $305 from credit card fees and Fiat exchanges is fantastic. Thanks for share your experience. But still confuse on how you found the way to doing that.

Probably can not try it right now because I still do not have enough bitcoin to travel to some country with bitcoin. are you serious with 1.9 bitcoin? even I still have not one bitcoin intact. even i thought i would be hard to find a local bitcoin. You've spent your bitcoin in a great way by using it to travel to two countries. I think it's a good story and should be published to a crypto news website like cointelegraph.com so others can see how Bitcoin can really be used outside of the investment instrument. Perhaps others who will read this will travel the same and actually documenting and posting it on social media so that it can be seen by millions of other bitcoin fans.

Of course you will, although you have only $1you could still manage to survive for few days. Having 3 bitcoins in your wallet is quite huge amount and it could possibly support you in a couple of months I guess. I didn't even get me surprise because I knew it that as long as you have bitcoin and the place you are going to with is bitcoin friendly.

Your story is quite good and inspiring too . It also gives mt the motivation to invest more and more into the bitcoin because in the the end it’s your saving that would help you in the future and I think there is no great way of saving other than bitcoin because once you started saving in the form of bitcoin then it’s val will also increase and its a kind of business also for u but I don’t understand why some countries and banks are so scared of bitcoin and othe crypto currencies.

A pretty good experiment.  I think USA and Turkey are very well established in finance, education, security, etc. Because of that, you had a good experience in using Bitcoins. But definitely  you will see that when travelling to Afraica or Asia, paying using cryptocurrencies would be difficult and also you might get scammed by people over there.  Until Bitcoins and other Altcoins become mass adopted, it would be difficult to just leave on a trip thinking that "Oh, everything would be fine if I just take some Bitcoins." We are far from such a lifestyle!!

The good thing about here was, the maximization of bitcoins truly support him in terms of answering his financial expenses. Almost some countries now are beginning to accept bitcoin as a medium of payment for their services. My logic is..why cash out at 10k when btc will probably be worth tens of thousands maybe even months from now. I am holding onto my btc till it hits at least 100k, then I may start cashing out little by little. But, the good thing here is that it can still increase its value so you can have your pocket money as well.
