It's probably best to hold as many as possible to spread the risk. However, you should also follow news about all the coins to make good decisions, so the number is limited by the number of coins you can continuously follow.

most of my money is in 5 coins. I have also bought small amount of other coins which i dont even keep a track of. Too many coins makes it difficult to track your own portfolio.

I will rather hold multiple ICO based tokens than coins that are actively being traded right now because with good ICO token we can easily make over 10x within a year or less than that time.

I am currently holding more than 10 altcoin and 20+ tokens which I have bought during ICO.

I hold approximately 15 coins. I think 5-20 is suitable because market is growing very fast and this means many new investment opportunities. We should buy more different coins.

You should always spread your investment across different coins to limit your risk, but the amount you should hold depends on how many you believe in. Personally I hold about 6-8 coins for the most part, and then occasionally 1 or 2 others. You're right that you may miss out in the biggest gains by holding many coins, but in the long term you'll make more profit, unless you can predict with certainty which coins will succeed.

At the moment I only hold 5 different coins long-term. It depends on what you want, and what's your risk tolerance. If you want to invest heavily in a few coins then 5-6 should be just fine. If you want a moderate amount of coins, I would suggest anywhere from 8 to 15 coins. More than that would be difficult to follow constantly.

The whole point of diversification is to spread your risk, so on that strategy alone, you're doing well. However, it's important to identify two things. Your goals and the risk you're willing to take. Spreading out to 11 alts all worth 1 satoshi is not the same as spreading out to 11 alts based on market research, due diligence and profit goals.

Basket should always be heavier on the stable alts with long term potential, and lighter towards those riskier ones which might tank but might also bring short term big gains.

Hold as many coins as the number of projects you can follow. Don't just blindly follow the next hyped coin.

Hold as many as you can. But If you buy like for 10 dollar A coin, than beter you invest in 1.
It al depends on the amount of money you have.
Try to spread wisely. Read First about the coin

I only have 14 coins/tokens now because of my budgetary constraints.  I can easily increase it to 30 or more good coins/tokens if I have the funds.  For now, I prioritize based on what I know/believe.

Out of that 14, 3 coins dominate my portfolio and represent 80% of it.

Do not feel obliged to target a certain number of coins if you do not see that many you believe in.

I am only holding five different coins, only Ethereum, monero, digibyte, waves and zrx, and those are the only coins that i trust a lot, and this is the main reason of why i believe in its price, and that in they can go up by a lot of money by the end of the year, or maybe next year.
But i dont have much money invested in all them, not more than $2000 in those.

The question really is how long you are wanting to hold them. The more you have, the more difficult it is to keep up with news on the projects. If you are wanting to hold and forget about them for a few years, then you can have a lot of different coins. But if you are wanting to keep them for a few months, better to have fewer coins so that you know when to sell.

I prefer holding many coins, much more then 11.
But for long term holding.
This strategy will give very big profit. Just need to wait 2 years.

That's correct. I am a hodler and owning 18 different coins (with some extra airdropped ones). My portfolio is a mixture of bigger, saver projects like XRP, ETH, ARDR, XEM with smaller, but promising projects like SC, XBY, XVG, BLOCK together with some paradise birds like ABY, TRST, MUSIC and some high risk bets on coins like ESP, 1337, MOIN, RUP. This combination compensates a lot of ups and downs. Even when the whole market goes down, do some coins lessen my losses - like XRP and ARDR at the moment.

And when I find a new interesting project, I invest a small amount of money in it without selling some coins from my holdings. Always money which I can afford to lose. So am I spreading more and more my investment, but - hopefully - take more chances.
My investments are:
50% in save coins, 30% in promising projects (which are on a good way) and 20% in promising, but a bit riskful coins. And I will hold them until they will kiss the borders of our universe - or fail. Nothing between. For daytrading I am too short in time and too emotional...

At least once a week in average I update my knowledge of every coin I invested in. Bigger investments more often than smaller investments. But I am checking the prices every day.

There shouldn't be any cap on the number of tokens you are holding provided they all meet tour investment strategy, but some people prefer to cap them base on their position on the coinmarketcap and their trading volume which I think it is important factor to consider for big investors

There are no rules for this, you may have a few coins or many, the most important factor is that you analyzed the projects and are comfortable investing in the project, if you do then it does not matter if you have 5 coins or 50 coins since at the end most of your investments are going to give you profits if you took the time to research them and invest at the right time.

i think thats enough and too many already but its ok if you want to add more coins for a much wider portfolio and much better earnings.  in my case im only holding bitcoin and ats token (recently recieved in atuhorship bounty ) . im not actually into trading or investing thats why this is only i got but i believe that i can still earn more profit just by holding bitcoins, because bitcoin is still increasing everyday and sky rocketing to 5000$ soon.

Correct the only issue is that we are able to monitor our coins effectively, I do not have that many coins and to monitor them can be a pain and can be very exhausting so I cannot imagine how those people that have many coins can do it, maybe that is all what they do in the day.

Ofcourse NIMFA token which is much undervalued and potential. Its about loan platform where you can take a loan up to 300% in investing for ICO project or trading on any exchanges. That's great how it is one of the project which created via ETH smart contracts and has proper fund for lending in cryptocurrencies. And now its being traded atleast on 2 exchanges.

Its much better if you do hold as much as you can but only on those coins which are really worth to hold on not just trying to buy any coin that you like and hold it off for years. This is just like gambling because you are hoping that coin would possibly pump up but situation does really depend because not all the times a certain coin do pump. Most of them do dump forever until they died. For now i am holding 20+ coins but not totally purchasing them but been accumulated on bounty campaign. Less risk since you dont pull out money from my pocket.

For the love of God (or anything else): HODL!!!  Don't sell.  If I held every coin I had in the past, I didn't have to work anymore.

Back in 2014-2016 I was like:

NEM, LSK, GAME, ETH, ...  after some profit: this coin ain't going nowhere, let's sell 1000000 for €300.  See what I mean?  HODL.  Don't sell.  At least ALWAYS hold some.  I have like 30 tokens/coins now.  I never sell all of them ever again.  Even if they aren't going nowhere, I just try to recover my investment but I never sell all.  I've learned my lesson the hard way.

I have most of my holdings in 3 coins, and have another little bit spread between 4 more. In total I am holding 7 coins. Feel like it would be too much to keep track of 20 different coins.

4 Btc, XLM, Litecoin, and also doge and POStoken it's for claim free token every day.

I think 11 coins are too much because it's hard to keep track of news for each one if you don't have an investment team and you share workload between each of you. I keep it 5 to 8 altcoins. I can follow every coin, news, rumors, development etc. I can follow everything about them. But after 8 coins I can't keep up with all of them.

I am planning to buy few coins. Going to start buying LTC, Waves, Ripple, NEO and few more coins as of now. They are booming up in the market. The growth ratio is really steady and trustworthy. Watching out the growth ratio. Hope these coins would really have a good growth.

depending on what goals you have. The more different coins you hold, the more you diversify the risks. but it also depends on the capitalization.

I am currently holding 4 altcoins and bitcoin. The number of coins that you hodl doesn't really matter, what matters is the growth potential of the coin you are hodling and if it can meet the goal that you set on each of them on their specified time. Another thing is your capacity to monitor all of them; to have the time to check and observe on their trends.

ICOs are tricky to predict nowadays, but if you are willing to weather the storms then placing your trust in a solid product like Augur, 0x and even the upcoming RoboAdvisor can have great returns in the long run.

Im holding for about 3-5 coins as long we can manage to hold our investment in altcoins it is okay. The time you invest we know our risks for spending money in cryptocurrency. So invest and observe all your coins you hold and sell when you are already in profit.

Currently im with 3-7 altcoins besides bitcoin, i do believe soem altcoins are realy under their real value, and as what happened this year already they should readjust. Besides those the moment of get rich with bitcoin is now possible if you have a big and decent capital, because 8000 dollars its very expensive for the most already, while altcoins are cheaper and has huge potencial as well to grow.

If those are alt coins, that's fine. If they're tokens, it's not fine for you. Tokens of projects are undergoing a huge dump at the moment and the recovery is not happenning fast in there.

Actually its quit hard, it seems like ever week more and more projets with good ideas start (so its hard to do a good research). So far i have 40 Coins and i plan to keep it at that number, but who knows

Cheers

Diversification is actually a good thing in order to average and mean the profit and loss. However, in my opinion, 40 coins are actually too many. Not sure what you have but 25% of those will be worthless is a while. Better to exchange some of them into more robust ones.

The thing is the assessment. I do not think there should be too many tokens, because neither BTC nor ETH other currencies significantly lag behind, but surprises are possible.

Personally for me, 40 coins is impossible to deal with. I can't even do my things while holding 5 coins. The best is to have different ones, but not that much in numbers. Maximum 10 of them, no more.

I think with the new altcoin 40 coin is a pretty small number, if that's not Etherum. As the new altcoin is usually relatively low value from several satoshi to several hundred satoshi. If only 40 coin altcoin it is difficult for you to make more profit.

For HODLing are coins with a big marketcap, a good and well known devteam with big community.

1. BTC
2. ETH
3. XMR
4. EOS
5. IOTA
6. HSR
7. POWR

...now, BTC is definately #1

There are few coins which deserve holding for long term because their prices keep increasing and having a big community supporting and spreading the word about it. Without any doubt BTC still the best choice when talking about crypto holding, but also Ethereum, LTC and Monero have good potential and you can generate good profit if you hold them for few months or years.

Problem with the market currently is - no matter how promising a project is, if there are no news related to it for a few weeks, the price will keep declining on a slow pace. That said especially now that BTC is booming it looks like there are no other attractive coins, but thats because the way you look at the market right now is mostly a very short-term view. The decline in coins you thought were promising might just be temporary and the coin might hit x10 your initial purchase price withhin a few months or years, but since the price might as well decline by another 20-30% or even 40-50% over the next few months, the big coins just seem to be a much better pick right now. Only other coins that are having big growth are pumped coins atm. If you plan to invest long term - pick your favourite project and dont check market everyday all day for the current price. Leave it and come back in 2 years. If youre constantly active checking the market, the big coins might be more favourable for your soul.

thats just my 2c

Hey guys today i have a special question.
i am HODLing 11 different coins right now including bitcoin...it that too much or should i spread even more?

My opinion is make a wide spread so your dont have that big loss. on the other hand also not that big win...

What do you think?

The best advice I can give you is to only hold coins you personally believe in, so you won't panic sell ween the hype is over

If you can find great projects with a fair price, no reason to limit yourself to a specific number of coins.

Enough coins to provide proper diversification. Be careful not to spread too loose if you are with a small bankroll, because the trading fees will eat you up drop by drop.

In general holding up to 15 coins is okay. Following more than 15 coins is very hard task for full time workers so I don't suggest anyone to do it. I guess that optimal is 10.

We are in hold everything stage. Hold every valuable coins, not shitcoins of course. Every coin is pumped to space. Bitcoin, Litecoin and Ethereum are usual suspects but if you have other major altcoins you should hold now. Too many coins is not good though, limit them to 10 or something to follow easily.

I have invested my money in only 2 coins bitcoin and Ethereum and I am holding both of them since long time as now the price of bitcoins is going higher and higher and same I have expectations from ethereum too in near future so holding now and selling it at higher profits in future is the best thing to do.

For now I was holding 5 coins, because when bitcoin price continuously increasing I try to exchange my other altcoins into bitcoin. I do this because I want to invest more in bitcoin due to good movement of this coin in the market I'm looking forward that this coin will incredibly increase more when 2018 comes. So I also plan to sell the remaining coins into bitcoin.

Exactly, that's good. Only HODL good projects that have just begun and has long potential to go. You must make sure look upon the coins supply, demand etc. Top 20 coins will be considerable without a single doubt.

There's no limit but it depends on how many of them you can keep track of and how many of them are worthy of holding for long term. For me, those long term coins are just 15-20 and the others are just for short term.

It depends on how much money you are willing to risk, if you have lots of money then your portfolio should be bigger, including risking with very cheap low cap altcoins, if you are limited and you don't have too much money to invest than you should choose only one coin from top 5 coins. Also I think investing only in bitcoin is already enough, you don't need 50 coins you need only one.

Don't hodl too much and don't have too little either. Every trader or investor should handle his portfolio according to their hype tolerant levels. If your gut says no, even if the project may latter gain potential, follow your gut instinct. But learn more about the coin you intend to hodl, especially their roadmap.

There is not limit on how much you can hold. Your budget will do the talking. There's a lot of potential coin right now and each in everyone of them deserves a spotlight.
But I suggest choose the coins you will put your money in or at least do some research to save you some time. Investing takes a lot of time but some coins does increase
big time in such little amount of time.

I think 5-8 altcoin number is optimal, sometimes I'm buying 3-4 new altcoin and sometimes reducing total kind of altcoins but normally I hodl 5-8 different altcoin for long term, if there is much it is bad, you must follow all of them.

Title: Re: How many coins should you HODL?

With a lot of different coins, your portfolio will grow slowly but safer as worst performers will have less impact on it (same for best performers). I mean if one coin is doing -50% while your 30 other coins are stable, well, it won't have much impact on your portfolio.

If you like risk, decrease the number of different coins you hold.

The answer is just about your risk aversion ... and the number of projects that seem attractive to you !
But I would say around 10 altcoins is fine.

You keep pretty much a coin, I do not hold much like you, I'm afraid that all the coins I hold are discounted. I will lose a fair amount of money. So I keep only one coin, and the other coin, when I'm profitable, sells all of them. I'm afraid of losing my capital. But maybe I will learn your way, will keep more coins.

There is no limit to the amount of coins I need to hold as long as there is an opportunity to be part of the project at a good price, I would join the tokens. I missed out on ICON ICO, do that means I should not add it to my portfolio when I believe in the future of the token.

After being in here in the crypto world for half a year now I think my plans isn't enough since there's plenty of altcoins to collect out there and I sometimes doesn't want to get out of those exchanger and I want to buy everything!  ;D

If you are in crypto trading full time and have time to follow every single movement in the market, take as many coins as you can, keep a track on when to dump and pump. When necessary you may go down to one coin that is expected to boom but in general, like most other said, dividing also divides the risk so keep that in mind as well.

Hodl as many as you can. Just choose potentially good alts. If you already have those on the top ten alts you should also consider adding in to your portfolio new alts which after careful study and research they will give you the earnings of 20x or more. You need to strategize and plan carefully so that you hodl the right coins.

As long as you have a good system in place to keep track of them all I think there is no maximum amount but of course holding shit coins for any longer time is not a very good idea and will just make you lose money long term. You only want to hold the really good projects for longer time (over a year) that have a shot at the top 10. Other not so promising projects is much better to keep until there is a pump then sell because in the long term they will have a slow death.

I don't know why the hodling meme spread to altcoins. Only about 1 in a hundred alts will make you any money. Therefore, if they get pumped, and you are in profit, take that profit before the dump happens. At least that way you end up ahead.

If you hold through thick and thin, you will end up a bagholder.

I am holding different kind of coins. Some did or may disappear. And some may one day have a better value. It is good to hodl coins that you believe have a future. But little coins may also one day get pumped, who knows? But you need to look everyday at your coins prices. Just look at ZCL. Lots of people thought the coin was dead. I personally believe we  should diversify our portfolio and keep atleast 20 coins in our portfolio. This way the portfolio wont take much hit in the bear market. Yes the gains will also be limited but you can always increase your leverage to a certain coins which you are confident in.

11 coins is also good but try to add some more coins after doing proper research.

I do not know if it makes sense to hold so many coins. Diversification is good, but it is definitely too much for me. As for me, it's better to have smaller amount coins, which can give a good and reliable profit.

Currently 17 hold coins. Reduced from 21.
My goal now is to increase the amount of each coin I hold and expand at a reasonable pace into other coins while they are still inexpensive.

I believe one should more heavily invest in projects they feel strongly about and just lightly bet on potential and risky ones. Occasionally go deep on the risky ones too  :)

I don't see why you should set a limit. The key for me, is coins/tokens that I can consolidate under a small handful of accounts - for instance, you can have dozens of tokens under a single Ethereum or WAVES account. I think NEM and NEO work the same way, but can't say for sure, as I don't own any of each. However, I hold over 50 coins/tokens in my ETH & WAVES accounts, a little bit of BTC and a couple of others that I mine.

You can hold up to 10 coins max which have long-term value, then you can leave the rest as tradable assets - even up to 50 - depending on how many you can manage.

There is no limitations in numbers of coins if you think that you can manage them all.  But for new comers, it might be good to have 2-3 coins for them to learn and can manage it will. Because not exactly all of us are just knowledgeable in this field, it could be hard for them if they take more coins in a time.

I hold most of the money in bitcoin and ethereum. I keep the other part in 5 different coins. Having too many coins requires a lot of time. And I dont have that much time.

As many as you can! The more coins you have the higher your potential profits. The more different types of coins you have, the lower your risk. That being said, only hold as much coins as you can follow. Any more than 20 is probably too much work for the average person to keep on top of, at that point you probably have duplication in the functionality of the coin as well and the marginal utility of an additional coin in your portfolio isn't worth the extra work required keeping up to date with it.

I think number of coins is not important so long as you can track those. Holding as many good coins as you can afford to buy is fine otherwise you are going to miss out on lots of new hot ICOs. There is no sure way to know which ones are the next 10x or 100x winners so diversifying is useful here.

There's no limit on holding coins as long as you believe on every coin go for it because I assume that you are knowledgeable enough to hold on that. I just hold coins that I know can make good profit for me just like NEM and BTC. Patience is what we need, believe and it will be worth it.

Around 10 are enough, just focus on great projects and don't invest in all of them because you will also increase your risk if you invest in too many projects. Personally I only hodl Bitcoin and Ethereum.

As far as I remember I hold like 7 coins or something right now, half secure half risky. I consider to hold 15 coins over time with my wage saves. I think more than 20 is too much in this matter. Very hard to follow all.

Hey guys today i have a special question.
i am HODLing 11 different coins right now including bitcoin...it that too much or should i spread even more?

My opinion is make a wide spread so your dont have that big loss. on the other hand also not that big win...

What do you think?
If you invest in all the coins and the tokens and you have the capital to invest the best thing to do is to invest in them. The more you invests the more probability you have to make money and your risk of lose money is reduce. Invest is a game of risk therefore you should not put money that you cannot afford to lose.

There is always to have few coins from the top10 - min 5 coins. Also good is have cheap, but promising coins that not even show up on Coinmarketcap, you can look for such projects in announcement threads, or even in ICO threads. I think that number of 10 coins to hold in basket is very balanced.

I have 5 coins in my portfolio for a long-term perspective, I do not buy them at a high price, so they are sufficient and promising coins can make serious capital, but you can lose. Therefore, you need to reduce the risk of diluting them with other coins.

I think holding trading more than 5 - 6 altcoins is not a good thing. because it is not easy to follow everything about the altcoins graphs, news, updates etc. If you have 15 20 altcoins it is really impossible to follow each of them everyday. If you do not follow each of them, there is high risk to loose money.

Diversification is the best strategy but only invest in quality projects that you truly believe will do well, stay away from useless and static projects, they will not provide you any value.

I hold approximately 15 coins. I think 5-20 is suitable because market is growing very fast and this means many new investment opportunities. We should buy more different coins.
Agree on this. You need exposure (with different risk/reward ratios) but also need enough to be able to follow news for each of them and make educated decisions along the way.

I have the same feeling altcoins could take longer recovery route. But i doubt there are remain as cheap as m,ost of their price are pegged against BTC. I think some altcoins are still quite expensive now.

The more you diversify your investments, the more you insure your investment, but in the same way the potential gain is reduced

These days I have the feeling that there's too much relativity between bitcoin and alts. Anytime BTC market falls the alt market tumbles, and any time it rises, the alt's market has a hope of going in the same direction. So if BTC is gonna hit 50k, I have a pretty good feeling that alts too will make headway this year.

Not much, you still can add more if you think that you can manage them all.  It could be just an easy for the people that there is no work other than these. As their life and time are just given into crypto world every day unlike the others that they just having these just for sideline job.

not much much, I just hold back a few that I think it's a good coin, which is likely to go up 2-5x from the current price in the future

Rule of thumb is to invest what you afford to lose in trading and specially with cryptocurrency that is high risk. Numbers is not important and no one can really answer that question but yourself.

If you are in crypto trading full time and have time to follow every single movement in the market, take as many coins as you can, keep a track on when to dump and pump. When necessary you may go down to one coin that is expected to boom but in general, like most other said, dividing also divides the risk so keep that in mind as well.
