Title: I just lost my little brother
Post by: FinShaggy on June 05, 2013, 06:44:14 PM
SHARE THIS
My little brother was taken from us by food allergies. They were M&M's with peanut butter in them, and they looked exactly the same as M&M's. His airway was cut off and my stepdad got him in the car and started driving to the hospital. The Ambulance met him while he was giving CPR to him in the road, and they drove him to a hospital in Denver, and from there he took a care flight to a better hospital. He was hooked up to a ventilator and still had a heart beat, but his brain started swelling and eventually blood to his brain was cut off.

We don't want any family to ever have to go through this again, so please help us raise awareness of the seriousness of food allergies (and the lack of initiative when informing people of what is in products) with the link below.

I'm happy of being trolled (asking for PayPal donations in this forum), rather than this being really happening.

If this is true then I'm really sorry. It's a huge shame you couldn't save him and the company should be sued for such stuff. If this is fake then I got nothing to say to you...nothing.

Sue them for what? For not putting a warning on the label that non-peanut flavoured M&M's may contain peanuts anyway?

Oh wait, never mind.

Who was looking after your brother, and why didn't they read the label if they knew he had a food allergy?

My condolences to you and your family, Shaggy, but it's not M&M's fault your brother ate peanut butter. I know you're hurting, and looking for someone to blame, but this is not the way to do it.

Sorry for your loss.

I agree that those m&m's should be shaped differently or something. Just because it's too easy for things like this to happen. I don't anyone needs to force the company to do it, but that they should just choose to do it.

It behooves a person with a food allergy to be cognizant of what he's eating.

OK, this is stupid.  Im sorry for op's brother and all, but the company is not at fault.  If the guy had a peanut allergy so bad that a few of these would kill him, he should have avoided M&M's, esp ones that weren't in a package.  As far as donating any money to "raise awareness" how much money will it take, for the guy with a life threatening allergy, to be made aware that he better not eat the thing he is allergic to.

I live in the deep south.  I cant drive 2 blocks with out passing 4 churches... and I still get people knocking on my door, early ass in the morning, to make SURE that I have heard of this Jesus fellow.

It's not the companies fault, yes. I don't think anyone would argue that. I just think that many children die from peanut allergies, and it would be the right thing to do to change the appearance of the candy. Even if it saves one life, it's worth it. Remember that these are children who are going to want to eat candy and if they make a mistake, they often pay with their life. As was the case here unfortunately.

It's one thing to say "they should change the shape of the candy." It's another thing entirely to actually do that. The shape of M&M's are a direct result of the production process. To change the shape, they'd need to completely change the process. Mars would more likely discontinue the Peanut Butter M&M's than rework the whole process.

Even though I understand that this is a tragedy, most chocolates may have traces of nuts in them. Nut-allergy is a particularly nasty allergy since it blocks respiration, and trace amounts can be enough to result in a full-blown reaction with many who have that allergy.

I doubt regular M&M's are completely safe either, so they too should probably be avoided.

I haven't looked into nut allergies before. What causes those? Are they genetic, or some chemical/embryonic development fluke?

Peanuts are kinda like nature's version of "Russian virus infested warez sites". Peanuts contain a vast spectrum of highly concentrated, long living and aggressive allergens. Which is what makes them so dangerous.

Now for a long time the going theory was that one's specific prevalence to become sensitized to peanuts and develop the allergy was entirely hereditary. However for the last 30 years we  have been seeing a meteoric rise in peanut allergy cases specifically in the West. A rise that is not explainable by genetic characteristics alone. There must be another factor influencing this affecting especially the very young.

Two culprits have been identified as the most likely candidates:
- The increased use of inexpensive, badly refined peanut oil in baby skin cremes, lotions and wound salves
- The increased use of peanut butter and oil in prepared foodstuffs for children, often hidden as "plant-based fat/oil"

Sorry for your loss, that is awful.

The shape of the peanut butter M&M's is more or less the same, but the peanut butter ones are actually much bigger than normal M&M's.  For a kid that young though, he couldn't know.  And probably for someone who doesn't eat M&M's often.  So sad.  :(

It doesn't matter what shape they are. As I pointed out earlier, even regular M&M's may contain peanuts. They're all made in the same factory, and Mars has admitted that cross-contamination happens, despite their best efforts to prevent it. That's why they put warnings on the labels. A person allergic to peanuts eating M&M's of any kind is playing a delicious version of Russian roulette. This kid should never have been allowed to eat them in the first place.

While I agree, and he has my full condolences, his OP was about helping spread awareness of this issue (it was NOT to sue anyone. Someone else brought that up). In a way it worked. I'm sure a few of us learned something about peanut allergies we haven't known before.
I also know that those with allergies are often ridiculed and made fun of, because the whole thing is really unknown and misunderstood by most. I'm thankfully only allergic to cats (yeah, I know about my avatar), but I've heard stories about kids having peanuts thrown at them and whatnot. I think that's done more out of ignorance than anything else, so... bring on the understanding and awareness of food allergies I say.

Also, it often helps to channel the feelings of loss into something productive. After you're done with grief. If you're ever done.

On your facebook (easily tracked from the filename of your images)

My little brother is 11, he had a heart attack and can't breath on his own, so he's on a machine. Please pray for him, and if you know anyone that can help us get blood flowing to his brain, please tell me. (which is identically the statement you had made about your sig "coma" sufferer.)

so how did you discover the issue was due to peanut butter m&m's, since that wasn't mentioned for the first week of this?

sorry for your loss, but that's part of the reason why it is not being treated as legit. The facebook is borderline as well.

I just got home from the hospital, this is real, so fuck everyone talking shit and saying they should have paid better attention.
They came in a large bag, and it wasn't as easy to tell with the large bag, plus my step-dad wears glasses, but didn't have them on.

We plan on raising awareness of peanut allergies, I had no idea a peanut could do this. And my life will never be the same.

So people saw me vouching for you and thus were all "Ok, this is a real thing, let's not make fun of it for the next 120 minutes". And then you go ahead and do something like this? Really? Dude, you've got great ideas, but do yourself and everyone else involved a favor and lay off the weed.

No, hell, REALLY? How fucked up is this? Do you even think about these things before you do them? Do you think anyone, do you think any single fucking person is going to trust you now? Dude, you've got great ideas, but do yourself and everyone else involved a favor and lay off the weed.

No, you did something so idiotic.. It's no words to describe it. Even if he did want to chance his stance after it, how would he know you'd say something stupid?

You're not helping yourself either.

Death is something terrible, yet you come back with that? You seem like a 'troll'. It seems like you only wanted to promote your town with such a tragic story. I don't even feel like donating to you anymore, because I'm scared you'd use the funds for your town instead, or run away with them.

And if you don't like peoples opinions stay away from forums.

mfw this isn't enough of a hint of what they are...

I'm going to go buy some peanut butter and give it to someone that's allergic to peanuts so we can sue the peanut butter company because we didn't realize it was made from peanuts.

If your post is here later, I will report it.

I will report him for advocating deadly violence and a frivolous lawsuit.
I assume he is better off removing his own post rather than having a moderator remove it.

Really good strategy and logic there, really good, Fin Shaggy. You've just put the icing on the cake. Yet I doubt I'm ignored, and I think you'd just pretend.

Thank you for that concise representation of a typical SA goon. Guy loses a dear family member, is still likely in shock and grief, says the first thing that comes to his mind, that being to dedicate something to the memory of his just-dead brother, and you spend a paragraph blowing up at him and calling his statement fucking stupid. It's extra super ironic considering what you posted previously about bitcoiners and compassion/charity.

http://health.usnews.com/health-news/blogs/on-parenting/2009/03/16/how-to-control-peanut-allergy-in-children

Quote
A peanut allergy is terrifying: Eating even a tiny bit of peanut can spark a fatal reaction, and up until now, the only way to avoid that fate was to never eat the legumes, which lurk in thousands of processed foods. Of the 150 deaths each year from food allergies, half are caused by peanuts, and most of those deaths happen in teenagers and young adults. That's why two new reports on an experimental treatment for peanut allergy are good news. They offer the possibility that some kids will be able to "outgrow" peanut allergy, as well as dangerous allergies to such foods as eggs, milk, tree nuts, and shellfish.

People on here kept saying things about the Kardashian's and peanuts, so I looked it up and the similarities are crazy.

My little brothers name is Mason, Kourtney Kardashian's son was Mason.
It happened on Friday for both of them
They were both hospitalized for peanut allergies
My brother Mason was 11 years old, the Kardashian Mason is 11 months old.

The only difference is the outcome, and now that I know this happened to their family as well, we sent an email to her manager to see if she will help us educate the world about how dangerous peanut allergies are. I never thought a peanut could do this.

I don't think that's a fair assessment of what FinShaggy's "first thing that comes to his mind" was:

My little brother was taken from us by food allergies. They were M&M's with peanut butter in them, and they looked exactly the same as M&M's. His airway was cut off and my stepdad got him in the car and started driving to the hospital. The Ambulance met him while he was giving CPR to him in the road, and they drove him to a hospital in Denver, and from there he took a care flight to a better hospital. He was hooked up to a ventilator and still had a heart beat, but his brain started swelling and eventually blood to his brain was cut off.

We don't want any family to ever have to go through this again, so please help us raise awareness of the seriousness of food allergies (and the lack of initiative when informing people of what is in products) with the link below.

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=BVJUWARZV8GNE

His motivations before this thread was already quite suspect, and now this happens and in less than 3 paragraphs "donations" are asked for.  There isn't any group associated with this donation.  There is no plan for how this donation would raise awareness.  There isn't even a hacked-together website in an effort to legitimize it.

Greyhawk went out of his way to try and bring some sort of legitimacy to FinShaggy's post when he had zero reason to do so.

Bitcoiners may well be known for their compassion and charity, and that is plenty of motivation for someone to try and take advantage of it.  Given FinShaggy's post history, I believe this is the case in this situation.

Hello,

My name is Ryan and my 11 year old brother mason went to the hospital this Friday due to peanut allergies. He had a heart attack & his brain started swelling until it cut off the oxygen to his brain. He was pronounced dead 2 days ago at 5:05pm I had no idea that peanuts could do something so horrible and my life will never be the same, so I am starting a foundation to promote awareness around the world, and possibly even work to eradicate peanut allergies. I never want anyone to have to go through what we did.

In the mean time, we are raising money and working to start a website and more. Nothing can bring my brother back, but we would like to start something that possibly turns into a label on ALL peanut products in ALL stores. Like a big red P sticker, or a picture of my brother.

 The Foundation is MasonsMiracle.org

I had never seen so many naming coincidences before. I guess people's mindsets are all similar when dealing with grief. Either that or we're talking to Keyser Soze.

EDIT: I'm having a hard time confirming an obituary. Can't seem to find a Mason Gallagher in Midland TX. It did take a few days to get my own mother's obituary into the papers if I recall though.

I don't get this at all. A kid dies because he ate something that had peanuts in it available at his home? Why would the parents even eat products that could have peanuts if they knew the outcome of having that stuff around. I'm sorry for your loss but that borders on neglect.

You wrote a paragraph, bitching him out and calling his idea fucking stupid, when you could have took into account that he might still not be thinking straight, and either ignored him or just pointed out that, unless he owns all the land in that town, the naming of it will really be up to all the people that live there. Great plan. Because a big red P or a picture of your brother is a much clearer indication that a product contains peanuts than just the words "CONTAINS PEANUTS" in capital letters. ::)

I don't get this at all. A kid dies because he ate something that had peanuts in it available at his home? Why would the parents even eat products that could have peanuts if they knew the outcome of having that stuff around. I'm sorry for your loss but that borders on neglect.
He already explained it. His step-dad decided to buy a brand of candy which is well-known for its peanut-flavoured varieties but he didn't think that was worth bringing his glasses along to read the label, and even after he got home, where his glasses were available, he still didn't read the label, and instead just assumed it was okay for his step-son to eat it. No doubt the real reason he's collecting donations is for the defence of the upcoming negligent homicide case.

This right here.  Also, OP has a history on these forums (which has been accumulated very quickly) with content that adds to the criticism.

To donate to anything like this, I would at the very least expect to find an organization behind it, with some sort of documentation on what their goal and methods are.

OP directed us to a website that doesn't even exist.

EDIT: I'm having a hard time confirming an obituary. Can't seem to find a Mason Gallagher in Midland TX. It did take a few days to get my own mother's obituary into the papers if I recall though.

1. His last name is not Gallagher, way to make even a bigger ass of yourself.
2. Our family hasn't been in Texas for about a year, so again. Ass.
3. Comment like this again and you will be ignored.

It's not the dedication, it's just the way you said it. You said it in a way you were promoting your town.

Fuck you, ignored.

FinShaggy, I know you are having a TERRIBLE time, but cut it with the language. If I see one more curse from you, I will ignore you, no ifs, ands, or buts.

Fuck you, ignored.

Ok, why not post a link to the obituary yourself, instead of making people hunt for it?   ???

OP tried to do that previously when asked if an organization or even website existed for "MasonsMiracle" - didn't work out so well:

in less than 3 paragraphs "donations" are asked for.  There isn't any group associated with this donation.  There is no plan for how this donation would raise awareness.

So first I'm a troll because I post on Bitcointalk while I'm in the hospital, NOW I'm a troll because I am not posting everything to a fucking bitcoin site.

Try to do some research on other websites before you assume shit and make an ass of yourself. BTW, you are ignored, so you don't have to reply.

Nobody is trolling you.  If you want people to donate money to your cause you had better well be able to provide them with some semblance of legitimacy for that cause, if they ask you for it.

We eventually set up a 501(c)3 after my daughter and I were shot.  There was a long period of not very clear thinking after the shooting.  Chill out and give him some space.

do a quick google or 2 of his screen name, and check out the other forums he posts in.  This guy has hate clubs.  He trolls (or he is just mentally ill.) everywhere.  I doubt the story about his brother is real.  Even if it is, he is psycho, and feeds off the drama.  He goes out of his way to stir up shit. This drama is not an exception to the rule because he is traumatized about a death.

I just read this entire thread, from beginning to end.  It took a couple of hours, but I think that's worth it to give me a feel for who is on this board and what goes on here.  This is only the second forum I've taken an interest in.  I no longer post in the first one.  I left because the moderators allowed a small group of long-time residents to harass other members, myself included.  The leader of that group is now in a third-world jail, facing firearms and other, even more serious, charges.

Looking up FinShaggy on the Internet, I found a few items of interest.  Some of the articles I read I believe were written by FinShaggy  himself, as they are self-serving and contain similar spelling and grammatical errors.

My take on all of this is that FinShaggy is running a scam.  He should produce the obituary.  Saying that he doesn't give a fuck just doesn't cut it.

I can confirm that this obituary was done by the Olinger Andrews Caldwell Gibson Chapel, and that this website would only handle obituaries that have services through that chapel, so it appears to be a legit story folks. Sorry for your loss Fin, and thanks for understanding the internet.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

However... this was ultimately an accident and the only negligence here was on the part of whoever allowed your brother to eat peanuts.

Your brother had very dangerous illnesses and wasn't being taken care of appropriately. Also... homeopathic treatment? oh jeebus... I don't want to sound disrespectful and I'm truly sorry for your loss but you cannot possibly blame a company for using peanut butter as an ingredient and listing it. There are literally thousands of allergies and people need to take care of themselves and their children.

Ultimately your brother is dead and nothing can be done about it, only sympathise with you and your family.

RIP

Coming up with scam after scam is not a legitimate form of public grief.

So far this grifter has begged for money in AT LEAST 3 different ways surrounding this death.

What kind of a person loses a brother and immediately starts panhandling over his dead body?

I believe his brother did die, but I think he is using it as a way to make himself some cash.  This is this guys pattern, find a cause, any cause and exploit it for personal gain.  ANYTHING that happens in his life is.... "poor poor me, everyone shits on me, while I did nothing wrong, please give me some money"

So your brother died, and you think someone killed him,  go hire a lawyer, and pay for it yourself.

You shame your brother by begging.

The story says updated Friday June 7, 2013. Maybe that last part was the update.

Bruno, if it's not a scam then your giving a rash of shit to someone that just lost a family member. I know the guy is a nut and probably a little high most of the time but he's harmless like Atlas. Be real sure your right first.

I'll have to concur. I've spent two hours on this, and had enough. It seems legit, for I've perused his mother's FB page.

See what happens when someone cries wolf too many times? You have trouble believing what is true or not. Though I'm speaking of Fin, this truism also applies to Phinn.

Fin's been in a charity state of mind since last year: https://www.facebook.com/groups/116544691814865/

Sadly, no serious funding is going to a charity where the main principal is a pothead.

The scam isn't his brother dying. It's him begging for donations to make baseballs in his brother's memory, a charity for Peanut Labeling (labeling which already exists), and finally to fund him accusing his stepfather for murder. (however that works)

He even says that if his stepfather would just sit down and talk to him about making a charity, he wouldn't pursue the murder charges.

You misunderstand my comment. I couldn't care less about the little hairball. I like Bruno and want to keep him from making an ass out of himself over a non issue.

And it's appreciated, for I have seen my error. Thanks, CBH.
