I'd say it's waves. Still a baby with huge pontencial to grow and great projects inside, like wagger, OCL and MyTracknet

How about Waves? I think they are doing great.

From a technology standpoint, It's obviously Cardano (ADA) that has the biggest potential, but it still needs to mature and demonstrate it's more interesting ideas.
The team is stellar, though.

I agree with Emuload. Still in the early days, but definately Cardano if they are able to deliver what they promise. But it will be a long term investment.

The biggest competitor to eth is not on the markets yet, or even launched.

For a currency to match BTC and ETH, it has to be a real crypto, that means it must be possible to mine it.  If you can't mine it, it isn't a real cryptocurrency.  So you can automatically cross off Ripple, Cardano, Tronix, and so on, since they can't be mined.  Things like Bitcoin Cash, ZCash, Monero, Electroneum, Bitcore, Verge, ZClassic, ZenCash, GameCredits, can all be mined and mined at a good profit.  I really feel that the best understanding of crypto is to do at least a little mining on the side.  That way you become familiar with things that are otherwise invisible.  You learn about up and coming currencies as they suddenly become profitable to mine, even with tiny market caps (< $10M USD ).

I would say Ripple is one of the coins that could compete with Ethereum this 2018. Checking on the performance of Ripple from 2017 data. It has a good chance that it will compete with Ethereum maybe not on how it works as we all know they work differently but with regards to prices of this coins I would say Ripple has a strong competition this 2018.

Ethereum's competitors are actually the Blockchain Credits, which have more features than Ethereum and faster transactions than Ethereum
but Credits Blockchain is holding ICO, so we just wait for the development of this Credits blockchain

Ripple gave a strong competence to ethereum weeks back, but now ripple has fallen low in value. As an user stated the real competitor to ethereum hasn't got existed. At present iota and waves seems to be growing good in value to reach new milestones, still I don't think ethereum will be overcome by some other altcoin.

Cardano (ADA). They still have a ways to go in implementing their tech, but when they do they will be a serious contender.

Why in the world do you think mining is a requirement for something to be a cryprocurrency. Nothing could be further from the truth.

i do have same opinion top 10 coin is ethereum competitor. but based on project is waves. but it will takes alot of time for waves to gain market attention and to be great as ethereum. there is a lot thing to improve for waves and even for ethereum. its hard job for waves to be bigger than ethereum and its seems imposible for me.

I think that no coin near eth yet, some of the coin got the potential to compete but it's no the time yet, it's still need users and support, the coin like dash, litecoin, ripple or stellar are some of the example, if the support of the coins keep on increasing then eth could have rival

Right now, I do not think that any altcoin can beat ethereum. Ethereum already surpassed so much issues last year and look at it now, it is unstoppable at this moment. Unlike other coins which is having a difficult time after a certain decrease in their values. What ever goes into ethereum's way, it will find its way to redeem itself, just like what bitcoin went through last year.

Ethereum becomes in demand because of the issuance of so many ERC20 compatible tokens but Doge can become a stiff competitor.  Why? My country only accepts Bitcoin and trading altcoins is a long process.  Usually this altcoin are easily convertible to ETH but highly expensive in gas whenever you directly convert your ETH to BTC.  To reduce the cost, only Doge can reduce the gas fees.  ETH to Doge to BTC.  I think if Doge developer could make an innovation that altcoins can be directly converted to Doge then Ethereum would really be beaten.  

I dont hear anyone in this topic about Lisk, They started a bit earlier then waves and are doing really good as well.

I didnt read much about cardano yet but is that really gonna be a good one?

i think most possible Ethereum competitor are waves and Eos.

Probably that is BCH, but even new altcoin is has the same opportunity size. I recently interested in XCPO it was listed in Cryptopia, I get it news in it official telegram about project development, I think this Coin is pretty promising, the ICO price of it is just 100 satoshi, the ICO ended 3 month ago but now it price is reach 3500 satoshi aproximatel. The market cap is still low so when new investor buy XCPO for run the masternode of then the price will automatically pump, investors are love to run the masternode of Copico because they will earn $28 approximately every day !!! . The dev also will double the reward after the new wallet of it is released. It's meant that the investors will earn $56 everyday.

In my opinion the possible competitor of ETH is the coins in the top 10 except bitcoin, because i guess there is no competition to bitcoin. BCH, ripple and cardano is near ETH are more likely to bypass the ETH in the market.

At present there is no competitor for Ethereum. The reason is Ethereum was strongly showing strength without support of any lobby. Now  it's strength understand by various lobbies.

I think there is many altcoins that could be competitors for ethereum. for example, litecoin, monero, dash, zec and bitcoin cash is the coin with an expensive price and the cheap price is waves, ada, lisk. but I don't think that the cheap coin could be a competitor for ethereum because they will need time to increase their price first and they should make something different than ethereum and other coins so they can be a new competitor for ethereum.

I think it's NEO, because NEO and ETH have a very large community base, and the smart contracts on NEO are as well as eth.

One of the core concepts of a cryptocurrency is that they're decentralized. As long as you have a computer capable of mining, you can obtain a share without spending anything, except for electricity. More importantly, everyone has an equal opportunity to gain the same share, given how much they're willing to invest. PoS coins like Ripple and Cardano fail in this respect, as one individual starts with all the coins. No distribution can ever be equitable if that's the case.

Mining is hardly more equitable, considering coins are distributed based on initial investment, PoS is no less a distributed system.
Just the same way mining can be mismanaged through badly premining, PoS can be well managed with a good distribution idea. PoW is just gen 1 technology. the future will move away from it.

EOS is s formidable competitor of ethereum on paper and most of the claim they present has not been explained to us how they are going to achieve them.  ETC  is also big rival of Ethereum but up to date they have not been able to achieve what ethereum has achieved in 2017 alone. Neither could be a good competitor and give ethereum run for it's achievement.

For me I think, most possible competitor of Ethereum is Bitcoin cash and Ripple since their price now is also increasing and they are also getting popular now so I think many people will also invest on them.

Ethereum is leading the alternative coins, and i'd say the biggest competitor of eth is ripple and litecoin. The two altcoins is going after eth in terms of its price increase. Thise are the altcoins to invest in and watch for this year.

I agree that it's either of the two (Ripple and LTC), but Ripple is a much greater threat considering its potential market will be people linked to the banks it will soon be associated with.

I'd say that's too early to talk about competition.

Can't believe no-one has mentioned the real competitor to ethereum which is LISK. Same type of technology but the DAPPS will be coded in javascript i.e. the most widely known programming language on earth. Next month LISK will skyrocket from rebranding - get some quick!

If you are talking about other cryptocurrencies there are MANY others. Take for example bitcoin, ethereums biggest competitor. There are many factors that go into whether or not a crypto is successful but ethereum has many competitors just look up "top 100 cryptos" and But Im giving you a list-Ethereum Classic ETC,Lisk,Waves,Stratis,EOS.

I think, eth is very good and has few competitors like altcoin in the top row. yes but future eth exceeds from altcoin the other, yes i am sure and believe.

There are many altcoins that in competitive with ethereum. Yes those coins that too close its prices in ethereum, the market is up and down its value. I think once the platform is already develop ethereum would be the best and on top next to bitcoin.

Doge just died coin right now. That's nothing rather than zombie coin that still has used by a lot of people to avoid the bitcoin transaction fees. The fact that the doge can't be considered as competitor to ethereum. it has no future. Ripple just centralized coin and the time will tell if that will not comparable with ether, bitcoin is only the one.

I would take a look at Aeternity. In my opinion this blockchain will be a real competitor to Ethereum. The concept of Aeternity is great and if everything that is planned will be deployed successfully into the mainnet I think that the Aeternity blockchain will be way superior to Ethereum. Im already invested in Aeternity, but I will continue to buy more when I get the chance.

At the moment the contenders in my opinion are or could be Waves, Stellar, Stratis, EOS, but the real competitor could still have to appear.

In my opinion the competitors of Ethereum soon, These are probably evolving every day, NEO, QTUM, WAVES, CounterParty, BURST. We can also consider development time, there are coins that have not yet been released that are developing for years, in silence.

The thing is that the team is more focused on the product than marketing it... That's my only criticism. Ether is great at marketing.

Definitely NEO, ADA, EOS.
But it's also possible that WAVES, Aeternity, Zilliqa will show some good moves. 2018 should be pretty interesting for crypto.

This is one of the few coins that I really like. They occupy 20 percent of my portfolio tokens. Coin is not very greatly increased, but it has very good prospects. Also keep the Factom, Ripple and NEO. This is the most powerful competitors Ethereum. You need to consider that they have a different price.

waves, lite coin, dodge and iota i think they have a potential to over run the etherium but it will take more time or year to make it happen. but those tokens has a different specification but good in their field of uses. 

There are many possible competitors of ethereum because many altcoins has a potential and possibility to have more investors on it. But my perspective the has possible competitors of ehereum are litecoin, ripple, wave or bitcoin cash. These four altcoins has  a great potential to be a higher competitor and they have a great high rate in trading site. In this year 2018 many altcoins will rise up because many people wants to invest in theses altcoins.

It is true that there are many good altcoins besides Ethereum but can you answer the following questions:

• 1. Is there a platform other than Ethereum used for the new ico project?
• 2. Is there a platform that has a smart contract system like Ethereum?

I think it's either ripple or nem but all alts can become a big competitor of ethereum in just one pump of any alts and ethereum will be out on the top. Aternative coins are really promising and I think they are just waiting for their right time to finally hit the market and pump well. I'll be not surprise if one day will come and all these alts will become popular and valuable like what has bitcoin become today.

Competitor is no here because all of different coins are give so much conveniece i think if we have many here that can brings knowledge and profit in some jobs here that's good and it's learn while earn in crypto so there's no competitor at all.You need only to invest if the coins run so well like btc,eth,xrb,xrp and xem now,Moreover do think positive way here and not negative, it's created and run by the conveniece so if we think negative here i think it's not well in crypto.

ETH has no competitor till date. All the ico's are made on the ETH platform and there is no other platform which is as popular as ETH.

Well the only competitor of ethereum is ripple and NEO since they are doing good nowadays i will consider ripple and NEO in my portfolio if they are still doing great in 2018 but for now i'll just watch their movements and also, Waves is will upward too i am glad that have invested on it but i will sell them sooner or later if they reach my sell price. Litecoin is slowing down at the moment but it is huge competitor though.

I think we will get the answer this year since in 2017, there was a huge number of new tokens and coin which will have time to grow now. We might see a huge battle for third place when it comes to market cap.

Why do you say the ADA will be an ETH rival? The coin is like a new born in Japan. But everyone says ADA is a good coin, I do not understand.

if we talk about the price, then I think dash, monero, litecoin, zec is biggest ethereum so far and this coin could increase too like ethereum. and if we take a look in the exchange, that coins have potential to grow more and even the price will compete with ethereum as for now, that coins is not show a good progress but for a long term, I think it will continue to increase. but if we talk about the function, I think there will be too many coins that will be a competitor for the ethereum and only time will answer.

I have only two that i can mention right now that could easily be "better" than ethereum.

Neo & ADA, they are the most capable of doing so, or at least, be a little bit "similiar" of what ethereum is.

I think good competitor it is - Neo. They have a lot of ICO today and good promotion.

I am very interested in Tezos and EOS. While Tezos has had it's share of drama and EOS has raised a stupid $1 billion dollars, I think the next stage of on chain governance could be very interesting. Also because both projects have such vast amounts of capital to reinvest in projects on their platforms, I believe this will give developers a pretty strong incentive to switch.

I think their biggest competitor is neo or ada. Neo is the bigger one because they also have several icos running on their platform while ada isn't there yet. People claim neo as chinese ethereum but in the future i can see them going toes to toes against ethereum in this space.

I think stellar and ripple will be Ethereum competitors. They have good fundamental. They make deals to several banks and fintech.
They also have good community. So, stellar and ripple is good competitors for Ethereum

Well as far as I know EOS is the biggest competitor to ETH. The only thing is that EOS has yet to launch a fully functional public blockchain (test net already launched), and that's why a bit under the radar for now. But when launched it is sure to give a shock to ETH as EOS can process thousands of transactions per second and is built by the same man (Dan Larimer) who built Steem and Bitshares. I think EOS can be one of the fastest growing project this year.

this coin still will go to the moon with if they make development and reduce the GAS fee.
but if this ICO (CREDITS) can made their concept to build a fast transaction (1.000.000x speed) on Blockchain,

I share your opinion here. I strongly believe that Stellar Lumens and Ripple are powerful contenders to Ethereum due to reasons like big community support, great developer teams and great real world use cases. Along with these coins, I feel that NEO and Waves have huge potential and could potentially challenge Ethereum in the future due to reasons like excellent platforms and great developer team.

I feel that Litecoin and Dashcoin also are possible contenders to Ethereum while Bitcoin Cash is another contender which many people tend to overlook due to the controversies surrounding it.

Considering the functional nature of ETH as a way to build Dapps, establish smart contracts, and as a platform for other offerings.
These are the platforms that seem to be its closest competitors,

NEO - Origins in China, earlier known as Antshares, NEO is the biggest 'Functional' platform. It already hosted some successful ICO's lately.

Waves - This is another platform, smaller than NEO, but is 'Functional' as well, its hosted some ICOs's as well recently.

EOS - This is a challenger; The promotor is a veteran of Bitshares & steemit , They have good funding and have also put out a testnet sometime in december if I'm not wrong. This will be good to watch.

ADA- Cardano - This is a new challenger Based in Japan. Not a lot of work has been completed, nor do they have a 'Functional' platform as of yet. There has been some news of its blockchain to be used for an educational credential usecase (being developed) by some Universities in Greece. They just have a wallet published (reviews say its a bit buggy atm) BUT they seem to be developing a very robust platform that is privacy AND regulator friendly (goodness knows what that may mean) BUT the promoter seems to have a lot of street cred, he contributed to the ETH project and Bitshares as well if I'm not mistaken.

Looking forward to hearing about other promising platforms.

I think BCH is a competitor who almost beat Ethereum even though Ripple shifts BCH position in cryptocurrency, but if looking at the price and future i choose BCH as my third coin after Bitcoin and Ethereum. In addition BCH also gives almost the same advantages as ETH.
In March i plan to invest some of my money into BCH.
Disappointed or Lucky i will accept it as a risk.

Long-term it's probably Cardano. I still can't believe that this is a top 5 coin already - it is so early in development. I have a small amount, but would like to have more.
However I would not give up on Ethereum - this is still the number one in its class, and is likely to remain so at least in the medium term.

I am for EOS.

It depends on the feature that you  want to compare but in terms of Smart Contracts Waves is already there. NEO is also one of the threat and Stratis is two step behind and there are more that is under development.

I don't think ripple will be a very strong or direct competitor to eth simply because it's Chinese and backed by the banks.

People see ETH as a more international coin with better tech and generally don't trust banks so.

There are a lof of coin that can be competitor of ethereum, like ripple ,litecoin, neo ,waves etc but I am always on the ethereum because I believe on it and I know this is a potential coin. Soon the price of eth will increase a lot.

I think Ripple is not far behind and in fact, it doesn't pose as a threat to Eth only, but Bitcoin as well since banks will be supporting Ripple for daily transactions which will eventually make it more popular and in-demand.

It will most probably be NEO. All others look thrash!

If Tezos (XTZ) is launched, then it can compete with the ether, they collected very large funds. I keep an eye on this, and as soon

I believe NEO is building the structure to became the main competitor. We are already seeing some great ICOs built over NEO, and they have some amazing ideas and community.

In my opinion there are many competitor of Ethereum like NEO, EOS, WAVES, STELLAR, ADA, ARCBLOCK. But the most competitor is NEO, STELLAR and WAVES because their blockchain smart contract has been use other party to create application and running ICO.

Read more about Ripple and Ethereum, they are not competitors and are almost as different as two cryptocurrencies can be. This question was not about price.

I'm seeing Neo is the closest competitor for Ethereum because Neo is also offering smart contracts to new coins and ICOs to power up their network and coin dominance in the future.
Maybe also Bancor but I don't think it's a close contender for Neo and Ethereum but I think it's a very long way to par Ethereum network this time.

I don't think Waves is a close contender on paring Ethereum network and start contracts because Ethereum holds the most ERC20 coins today and many ERC20 coins to come within this year.
I could say, Neo and Bancor is the closer competitor of Ethereum but that doesn't mean they will replace Ethereum soon.

Electroneum is probably not very popular today but Ethereum will be negligent on their platform. Surely electroneum will go ahead with them, especially when the ETN is rising and that's the way that investors are moving. which hopefully will not happen because the prices actually fall Ethereum.

Now there are two projects that can become a competitor for ETH: WAVES and NEO. These projects are similar in technology to the ethereum network. But still they have not become as popular as ETH today.

Going with these 2 too. But we'll see what development brings.

Yeah, Amazon is still there. But sites like MySpace and Altavista were replaced couple of years later by Google and Facebook.
And i think we're still in the very early phase of Blockchain so a lot can happen. Interesting times.

I think that's PBT. PBT might not be as popular as Etherium but it has a much bigger and larger market value compared to ETH and I think that's an advantage. Ofcourse Bitcoin won't be gone when it comes to competition. Bitcoin is way better to Etherium at this moment and in most of the aspects so it may be a good competitor in the future for Etherium.

I think NEO is a competitor who is directly competing with ETH because in recent times, ICO projects using NEO platforms are becoming hotter and this will attract many new investors using NEO to start invest in upcoming ICO projects

There are practically none except for undeveloped waves and the mysterious Cardano. Perhaps even future hardfork ether, but so far they have not yet appeared.

I think Bitcoin cash and Dash are the possible competitors, both coins are capable of sustain for long term, currently the price of Bitcoin cash is more than that of Eth and dash almost approaching 1000 mark so these two coins are contenders for Eth.

NEO, QTUM, WAVES, EOS... They all have made a big progress in last several months. That means they are full of potentials.

On the top of my mind, NEO would be the close competitor of Ethereum. As i watch it closely NEO will have  chance to overtake Ethereum if those token that they will include in their smart contract will be all legit and not a shitcoin like tokens in Ethereum, They have to set a strict standard before approving a contract.

In my opinion, NEO can easily compete with Ethereum very soon. This is the coolest platform, supported by guys from Asia, thus a great amount of people support it. I can also say that EOS will show its power, and it will happen close to Spring or Summer 2018.

The biggest threat for Ethereum is NEO because as of today it has many partnership with well known company and personalities like Jack Ma. they are also expanding their horizon in conquering European market and US market in terms of blockchain technology.

I think waves can be one of the competitors of ethereum, because waves today sometimes become one of the participating platforms in ICO. so in addition to eth waves could be one of the increasingly popular platforms.

I think NEO is building its structure to become a major competitor to ETH. I'm already seeing some big ICOS built on the NEO platform, and they have some serious ideas and technology.

the big competitor for ethereum is ripple, bitcoin cash, eos, litecoin, stellar, cardano and iota. it is good for litecoin that can increase and eos did the same things as litecoin. the list on coinmarketcap giving a good sign to us that there will be a new competitor for each coin and not just for ethereum. and for that list of a competitor, only bitcoin cash that is more expensive than the ethereum but the litecoin has a chance to be expensive too. it will be more interesting for the rest of the months and I am curious about the result.

I think the possible competitor of ethereum is neo. They both offer decentralized network and platform for smart  contracts that can be activated with using any third party.

Ethereum is also a competitor crypto currency to the number 1 coin and it is competing against bitcoin so i guess altcoins are not aiming to surpass ethereum but bitcoin. Even though they've got good technology and features. Bitcoin is the pioneer and no one can beat it's popularity in terms in acceptance as payment.

a lot of people said EOS but i think stellar can be ETH's competitor. Since it is old coin, Stellar is coin that still stable until now, i mean it is not pumped dumped and then die in market. until now developer still manage it too

in my opinion there are not many to compete with ethereum and i think zill and Quarkchain are the main competitors. Sparkster has a chance to surpass ethereum but they do different things.

According to me NEO and LITECOIN is main competitor of Etherum. Etherum is also a strong coin after bitcoin but NEO & LITECOIN also gives fight.

I would choose litecoin for a more mainstream approach or Cardano, even though the latter is more recent and has shown less reliability, it is still a great option.
