No.
Don't even try. There is no point really.

If you have strong grafic card, you can try litecoin mining.

you can mine some altcoins like protoshares or primecoins. there are no gpu or asic miners for those coins. just cpu miners.
but your i3 won´t make many coins. perhaps 0.1 primecoins a day, depending on your luck

Don't bother - You will only end up frustrated. If you have a graphics card then you could. You would probably want to use a pool though. Although mining Litecoin in a pool with a graphics card is still very slow. I think you might be able to mine 1 Litecoin a month - If your lucky.

Yes, you can mine with a normal PC.

However, the real questions include, "Can my hardware components mine at a positive rate of return?"

The i3 itself will only run a cpu miner. You'd be lucky to find a good rate of return for that, even with newer alt-coins. You could get lucky if the value of the coins shot up, but still, we're not talking about much hashing power here (compared to GPUs and ASICs).

If you have a GPU or ASIC device attached, those would do the mining and your computer could be used for other things. The processing load on the i3 would be negligible.

You can always think of ways to profit of the communities problems, use that 'normal PC' and create a solution for issues within the BTCitCoin realm ;-) !

Back in the day the average computer could mine cryptos!

You can mine primecoin on Your CPU, and scrypt coins on Your GPU if its decent one. But better convert it to rig!

How to Start Mining cryptocoins on computer?
It is really easy now.
First, decide what you should mine.
Visit this site http://dustcoin.com/mining (http://dustcoin.com/mining) to check what is more profitable now.
Important scrypt (like litecoins) is 1000 more complex than SHA-256 (like Bitcoin) – be careful
Currencies change very quickly – check it from time to time
Compare speed of different hardware:
Here you can find the info about speed for mining scrypt coins (like litecoins ) https://litecoin.info/Mining_hardware_comparison (https://litecoin.info/Mining_hardware_comparison)
And from https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison) find info for mining SHA-256 like Bitcoin

After you compared and chose coins and hardware,
Download initial software for your coins. It include wallet, and you can create yours then.
Find and select the pool, where you will mine.
NOTE! Mining on your own affordable only, if you have really heavy hardware, if not then it is better to connect existing pool. List for litecoins pools - https://litecoin.info/Mining_pool_comparison (https://litecoin.info/Mining_pool_comparison)

Register  your own id on selected pool
Create worker! (After your ID you could create lots of workers, normally one worker for each PC, so you need at least one)

Select software for mining.
There are lots of different software depending on coin,  hardware,  pools, operating systems and etc.
I recommend GUI Miner script http://sourceforge.net/projects/guiminerscript/ (http://sourceforge.net/projects/guiminerscript/) as it for Windows based on cgminer, cudaminer and reaper
Already included setting for popular litecoin pools, has settings for AMD Radeon videocards

What to do with coins?
Buy goods or exchange them into money

Go to https://www.cryptsy.com for exchanging from different coins to Bitcoins or Litecoins, then go to Mr. Gox or btc-e to exchange them into real money.
Have a nice BTC

You can try mining alt-coins instead of Bitcoins. Does your computer have a graphics card? You can run a CPU-mining software and a GPU-mining software on same machine simultaneously. This way you can reach some acceptable mining speed but don't expect huge profits.

Use a pool to mine. Try miningpool.co/ - If you do a search on how to mine you will find some tutorials.

As Trololo suggested, choose your currency and join a pool. To mine with CPU, you can use CPUminer (just google it). If you have a NVIDIA GPU, use CUDAminer. For ATI cards, use cgminer.
There are plenty of mining tutorials on this forum and Google. Search for 'Litecoin Mining Guide'. While the guide may be for Litecoin, it will work for any scrypt coin.

yes you can! but once thing is certain, if its BTC or LTC forget it!

i am mining Xivra, Nyan, Doge, Hotcoin, and Mooncoin right now. on a laptop!!!!

i run the batch file under scheduled tasks and mine a different coin each day. i am currently editing a tutorial on youtube for alt coin mining newbies and will be making reference to bitcointalk.org as there are so many helpful members here that have got me this far.

my laptop has a cracked motherboard and can only be operated successfully tilted on its side, so it was bound for the scrap heap to start with.

if your doing it as a hobby buy yourself a watt-meter. around 10-15 bucks. its handy tool to keep costs under control.

i have an asus v50nv dual core 2.5ghz clocked to 3.1ghz stable using a program called getfsb gives me 14khs reliably. my setup uses around 40 cents of power every 1.25 days draws between 55 and 71 watts.

cpu only mining is piss easy to do once you learn the first time via pooler-cpu-miner for windows/intel for me.

i target really low difficulty alt coins via this forum and coinwarz.com

then i let it run for days on end. its good fun and cheaper than smoking, drinking, etc.

i do it for fun and the kids. if your lucky there may be a coin that takes off and you may come across a coin that is highly transacted you can use day to day.

and...yes...join a mining pool! but also check the query time for the pool your joining and where it is located. this can affect your mining.

enjoy...
ua

You won't make much profit, but it is possible. I use a PC I built for gaming for mining, and its not actually that bad.

Your pc might lag a little, and you will not generate that much speed. Especially if your GPU is slow and your using it for something else (such as 3D gaming). I would prefer for you to create a Bitcoin Mining Rig.

You could try your luck with some altcoin which is not listed in any exchange yet. For example Solcoin [SOL] is still very easy to mine.
You may not got any money but at least some fun.

Yes, you can mine with a normal PC :) But no use mining Bitcoin directly as others mentioned, you can still change altcoins to Bitcoin if you want.

I started with Litecoin mining on gpu, then got a hint about just released Protoshares from a irc-friend (inside nerd channel but I was the only one who started) and started mining it with cpu at same time. When it seemed that Dogecoin is here to stay, even some months, I changed to it from Litecoin with gpu, and when Metiscoin was published I mined it with cpu until difficulty was too high. Now I'm mining Protoshares with cpu and Dogecoin with gpu again, but when something interesting appears I will take the easy coins without hesitation. That's the interesting part on this hobby, always searching for something new that could be the next big thing :)

Oh yes, I have i5 laptop too which have been mining protoshares nearly from start. No enough gpu power for mining, it has the slowest possible Nvidia chip, and cpu mining speed is a bit less than half of my desktop computer's cpu power (Ivy Bridge i5 4,2GHz).

PTS is a profitable CPU only altcoin, I also like the wallet client its clean and easy to use. PTS can be easily mined using minerd and the pool recommended for it is beeeer.org

I know it sounds weird, But it is a real pool for PS and other altcoins an dpays out every 0.2 worth of the coin you mined.

or maybe look for coin only minable with CPU

Yes you can, but if you thinking that you going to be a millionaire in a month don't even try it.
If you're doing this for fun go ahead, just be aware that you will be using a lot of hydro and it is a timing consuming.
Ready more posts about it before you starting something that you don't know.

They aren't that useless, they just have a relatively lower hashrate compared to AMD cards, but they are still worth something.

SOL is not for CPU mining now. It's hashrate has growth from 1MH/s to 20 MH/s last week... It's much easier to buy mining rig than to look for what you can mine with 50 kH/s

My story

I started on December 17, for now with hashrate approx. 500 Kh/s I got 5LTC, my investment were 170$, just to buy GPU

So question is, could you mine with normal PC - yes you can start, but if you want to earn money then you will need to build a rig, and hope that this mad will continue

Nice Welcoming and meaningful Guide for him...Thanks

****************************

Thank you. This is very useful.
I want to do mining with my PC, and I find it's hard to get coin.
Now I want to by the hardware to get started!

Well you can mine any coin technically, as CPU can do anything. It is reccomended that you mine CPU coins, as its a more "fair" playing field so to speak.

Hi, I'm actually selling my GPU Bitcoin/ Litecoin miner if you're interested.

The specs are below
2.160 Mhash/s Scrypt
2.160 Ghash/s SHA256

The miner includes
3x Gigabyte R9 280x (risers included)
Modified CPU case to fit all 3 GPUs
CoolerMaster 1000w Gold PSU

The miner is able to mine coins at a speed of 2100Khash for Scypt. I have to sell it as my power socket cannot handle the load and i was advised to reduce the electrical load by my electrician to prevent damaging my cable.

If you're interested, you can drop me an email at

You should rather mine with a cloud mining service like CEX.IO
Current prices are 0.0094/Ghs for contracts which start mining now and 0.0083 BTC/Ghs for contracts which start mininng on 26th of April (FHA)
With CEX.IO you can start mining today without any hardware running at home.

It is not really profitable to buy the cloud hashrate. You can check it yourself using any profit calculator.

Yes you can, but you will not be making much. You will spend a lot more electricity than what it's worth. But if you can plug your PC's in public electricity, you can ''cheat'' but you will not make much anyways. Investing under 100k$ is not profitable.

Yes it is possible to mine via WiFi. But don't look into BTC or Scrypt mining. Look for CPU-only coins such as MemoryCoin, ByteCoin (BCN) etc

As it already had been said you can mine, but do not expect great earning. You can choose which power to use CPU or GPU, I suggest to use CPU, but better perform an upgrade to i7 and then try. You also can try merged mining.

Is there any point?  I guess it depends on what you're expecting to get out of it.  If your goal is to learn about the process of mining and crypto-currencies in general, then sure, try it out.  If you're expecting a profit, there really is no point to mine with that hardware - especially if you want to mine BTC.

You're off-topic here, but I'll try.

If you want to mine scrypt, forget GPU and buy ASIC.
If you want to stick with ASIC-resistant algo like X11, try a rig with a few NVIDIA 750Ti. They eat a lot less power than AMD.

Better start your own topic than stretching this here.

I must say that you have taken a wrong decision. You are going to waste your electricity. Now mining become less profitable and with a normal PC it is almost impossible. You can it for mining. Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) are specifically designed to do just one thing: mine bitcoins at mind-crushing speeds, with relatively low power consumption.

Yes do not mine LTC on a cpu, its just not feasible now.   They have designed specialised hardware for that purpose.

more then 4x harder in 6 months and the price has been dropping all this year.   So costs more, worth less.  Not a market to start out on

How come coins need to be mined?

How did you end up on this forum?

Actually its possible for a coin network with no mining.   I didnt think so previously but they do operate now.    How well they work is subject to argument but so far Ive tried its worked fine.    The problem is all new coins are just tokens with very little worth.
Most people only ask these question because they want to get rich, short answer is no easy way to mine high worth coins now sorry

If you are here out of interest then check out energy coin, you just have to leave the laptop open and connected to the internet and thats it.  No mining, new coins are distributed to holders who form the network.     We'll see one day which is best, some say its all waste but one route should be best and it probably wont be running gpu maxed out 24/7 imo

You can mine mine some "cpu only" coins like Quazar, Quark or Memory. But with single CPU it would be very hard to profit.

Title: Re: Can I do mining with a normal PC?
Post by: STT on May 16, 2014, 01:41:14 AM
If he using the computer anyway then its no problem to have it in the background gaining some shares on a pool and eventually some coins.  Its not a big deal and a single cpu wont make you anything much.

back when a cpu could mine bitcoin and I tried it briefly, nobody was going wow really because the coins werent worth anything. So you have the same scenario now with cpu coins but who knows where they could go.  darkcoin like I mentioned above is getting more demand apparently, Im not tempted to sell it especially though its good to read the various competing features and you can always swap to btc if you like

Quark did spike, about a dollars worth went to over 50.   Not sure now but its well known still, it could propagate further but mining is over mostly for it I think

Nice Welcoming and meaningful Guide for him...Thanks

except it doesnt tell him the most important part...that he will be wasting money in power......
