Post by: spyro on January 29, 2014, 09:26:29 PM

Quark - 6 encryption methods vs 1 for BTC, LTC, Doge, all popular coins
It only needs 800 NEW $/day to maintain its value vs 3 million NEW $/day for BTC and 1 million NEW $/day for Doge
It is one of the fastest coins with transactions confirmed in 30 seconds vs. 10 minutes for BTC, 6 minutes for LTC
It has a community, not at Doge, BTC, or LTC levels but its growing - http://www.reddit.com/r/QuarkCoin
Its undervalued relative to infrastructure.

Peercoin - Love the developer and this means a lot with cryptos! Things could change and PPC will adapt.
Amazing new marketing push coming around (500,000$ put down).
Resistant to 51% attacks because of the checkpoint system.

Infinitecoin - IFC is a great investment for a similar reason to Quark, it needs very little $ a day to maintain its value.
Has a good community and lots of development going on.

Litecoin - A pretty stable crypto and somewhat less risky investment than many coins.
It has a huge community and many projects going on, like a mini-bitcoin in terms of marketing.
Great developer.
Definitely a better option than BTC, and while I believe that QRK and PPC are much better coins, this could win out if consumers choose it.

Pennies - CENT is not a solid investment. It's extremely risky, but I put money into it because I like the idea.
It is a complimentary currency that goes along with others and isn't competing to be #1 or #2.
It was made so people wouldn't have to .00001 BTC for a sandwhich, they can just use their CENTs.
This is my least researched coin, but it looks like it has potential.

I don't really venture past the coins that are available on BTC-E, but I do enjoy in dabbling with the coins that they have on offer there.

I think that it will be worth holding some LTC and FTC should BTC really kick off again.

Diamond - Diamond combines the best from Bitcoin / Litecoin / Novacoin / Luckycoin / Florincoin , it uses both Proof of Work and Proof of Stake. This provides a excellent resistence to 51% attack. It also combines the random block feature from Luckycoin, making it the first coin in Pow/PoS category to use random blocks. It also supports transaction comments like Florincoin. This coin has very low transaction fees. It provides steady coin supply at 1 diamond per block for 8 years. Diamond development was taken over by a new high motivated team. Diamond have the potential to earn 100x or even 1000x of invested money if u plan longterm for now people try to keep value low until the got enought of them into their wallet (pretty hard because only 1440 mined each day).

Worldcoin - serious coin created to stay strong dev&comuinty support (still ranked below diamond because max per coin value gains have a much lower potential)

Earthcoin - serious coin created to stay strong dev&comuinty support (still ranked below diamond because max per coin value gains have a much lower potential)

doge - in my oppinion not serious coin but for now ideal to mine and sell i dont worry that i dont keep that coins in my wallet its only purpose is pump&dump

litecoin - if low risk and GPU mineable is ur thing ltc is still the coin but dont expect to become rich set ur goal to payoff ur gpu ina few months that will be possible a 100x value change is unrealistic

I really appreciated your thoughtful post.  I don't really have five altcoins yet and analysis like this helps, I had dismissed quark as an instamine scam, your comments suggest maybe I was wrong.

Right now I would say:
Doge - Yes it is currently overpriced but it has a great community, doge-dice alone made sure this coin had some early legs, if it can continue to get support it will be a survivor.

Litecoin - I like what they are trying to do but am worried it is too close to bitcoin.  Doge developed almost as much infrastructure of support as LTC with much less time.

Quark is dead, please don't buy it anymore.

That's funny. Come at my investments bra, they're all solid!

Quark is the 4th most active reddit coin - behind BTC, LTC, and Doge
Quark has a foundation constantly funding infrastructure projects - http://www.quarkfoundation.cc/projects/
Quark has an active dev who can be reached at any time

And it has a good marketing push with many videos/infographics/media connections (Still, Keiser) -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vb8si58DW9Y
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qe4Myh5Rw9M
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeP7REZXLjU

@Galbros - Certainly no instamine scam. Originally, people were saying it was premined but this was completely disproven by the Announcement thread on here (posted the same day as the genesis block was mined). Then came the instamine 'scam' concept which is interesting and harder to disprove. But, if you are seriously considering a large investment, I can show you why it is unlikely that Quark's mining process led to an unfair distribution. If you look at Cryptsy's volume from launch until it shot up in price, miners were dumping the coin continuously for near nothing into the hands of many investors. Now, it is still a cheap coin.

I'm not saying make it your sole investment as many others do, but it should be a third of your portfolio. I often recommend BTC 40%, LTC 30%, and QRK 30%. BTC and LTC are somewhat safe, while QRK is a high reward/high risk coin that I believe in!

As a redditor and crypto-enthusiast, I love Dogecoin. But as an Economist, and more importantly investor, I don't see Doge as maintaining its PER COIN price. It's market cap may be stable and go up, but investors will lose money. Need a further explanation on the difference in per coin and market cap fluctuations? Just ask me.

My reasoning for Doge's dropping per coin price is the amount of NEW money it needs daily. QRK will go down in price if it doesn't receive 800 NEW $ a day AT its current price. Doge will go down in price if it doesn't receive 1.3 million NEW $ a day AT its current price. (For reference, BTC needs 3 million and LTC needs 500k a day).

That's some nice information there but I would have to agree mostly with pennies as it isn't a solid investment and is very risky in fact I wouldn't even bother investing at all the risk is too great.

1) Quark - well because the community is pretty incredible and actually has the capability of becoming big. The economic model and the cost all seem really appealing to me. I truly think 3 main family of crypto-currency will raise. Quark being CPU while Litecoin, and bitcoin is GPU/ASIC. The top 3 will definitely be Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Quark coin. Also the Quark video is so well made.

https://i.imgur.com/UVSmcPA.png (http://youtu.be/vb8si58DW9Y)

2) Dogecoin - for now but it's not something that is going to last. I do think the community in Doge is pretty incredible, but because of the name and billions of coins that is being mined. I just don't see it lasting. I really do hope it last because a lot of people will end up hurt at the end if it crashes.

3) Emunie - They looks really promising and I can see it becoming big.

4) Curecoin - Seem interesting on what they're trying to do.

5) Zerocoin - Seem interesting too.

Doge - this will be in the top 5 alt coins all day long, best community ONLINE, biggest altcoin channel on irc, sustaining and all round awesome

bitcoin - its a wild roller coaster ride and its fun as fuck :)

POTcoin - great timing in terms of global politics and market opportunity, could have a REAL application that is very useful

Unobtanium - this coin is a massive underdog and not many people even know what it is, its an incredible coin, great dev behind the coin and its RARE and interesting.

Ela Coin - this coin is practically unheard of but its seriously cool I really like it and hold quite a few. Price is volatile but its certainly worth buying

FZ - cause it's worth more then qrk atm and community driven now ( the guy who released it caused alot of drama dragging the value of FZ down and when the community took over it's higher then QRK per coin atm )

PRT - cause I like what i saw in the beta wallet ( kinda like your velcro kids wallet vs a Designer Dior wallet ) should have the option to skin your wallet also all the other wallet i have i just battleship gay with a logo I want skinz like WinAmp.Only exception in my list is worldcoin wallet as it stands out from all the other i have. Apple didnt sell stuff cause its has awesome hardware - design it well and people will want it. Make your wallet desirable....

MRC - DEV invested their own money. Estimate is 2k

MTC - cause difficulty is thru the roof, 1 CPU hashing away for one day = 1 coin

Don't have a 5th cause i just started crypto at xmas last yr and wouldn't recommend QRK if your just starting out. I have some but not alot. its hard to get but there is already a lot out there. As an invester - maybe different.

1.Litecoin - literally the silver to bitcoin. people who can't invest heavily in bitcoin can invest more into litecoin and definitely turn a profit in the future. This will always be a good coin to invest in right now and further into the future, not going anywhere anytime soon.
2.Dogecoin- the second best alt coin in my opinion enough though it started out as meme. It's gaining a lot of ground heavily and the price will only increase later in the year. A good coin to definitely start with if you new to crypto-currency.
3. Coino- Not even a month old and coino is starting to get heavy recognition already. fast transactions and the developers behind this coin have years of experiencing in marketing and do make a revenue yearly. smooth launch with a max cap of 100 million coins. (Currently mining this)
4. Nxt- Large, active community. 2nd generation crypto-currency, potential to succeed and grow due to community.
5. Astrocoin- another relatively new crypto which hasn't been out for a long time yet. Currently worth ~$15.00, short time of existence and a huge hash rate has already been accompanied by miners. A lot of room for growth.

Honorable mentions- lotto coin, moon coin, Especially Ron Paul Coin

Betacoin. Google could give you more than 10 reasons. If people find it they stop asking the same question and start investing or mining it. For the following four i don't care.

SXC think it has a good future and is a good investment
NAN know the new DEV and I think the coin will make me 10x gains
LTC as it makes me money and is quicker to use than btc

PYC I think could do very well if a competent dev took over and the founder lets the coin go

0) BTC to $2500 (3x current, will approach $50B market cap)
1) LTC to $120 (6x current, will approach $4B market cap)
2) DOGE to $0.005 (33x current, will approach $500M market cap)
3) QRK to $1.25 (15x current, will approach $350M market cap)
4) WDC to $3 (10x current, will approach $200M market cap)
5) not yet decided

Those are my completely uneducated guesses for some of these coins at the end 2014 bubble if one happens. Also, it figures that all of these did not come out this year. There are a lot of new coins released, but I need more time to decide how I feel about the long term.

ONLY invest in coins that have merchant adoption. Bitcoin, litecoin, and DOGE. Why would you support the useless consumption of hardware mining if other coins have no merchant acceptance. These coins are posing a serious threat to the USP of crypto currency. Think about it, what the f*** is Globalcoin or RonPaul going to serve you if you own it, besides speculation and scams. Stick to the real momentum, and only support merchant adopted coins. It's the only way.

Agree if you're looking for medium and long-term investment. However, BTC, LTC and DOGE aren't the only ones that have merchant adoption. You may also want to look at new coins like Noble, Digibyte and USDe.

My list of established alt coins in no particular order:

Litecoin
Dogecoin
Quarkcoin
Zetacoin
Worldcoin

I agree with Quark and PPC strongly, and LTC is a good conservative coin. Zerocoin has potential but I don't see it making top 5 necessarily.

But whats with Namecoin? I feel like that one is dying out. Do you have reasons for it?

you should try some second gen. crypto, if NXT will have those promised features, it could become hit, its clones too. Right now it is extremely cheap as all of them are already created, and share holders are selling them constantly, once they sold what they have, it could go up.

This makes Quark attractive in my mind, with the initial mining phase over, there is very little capital dilution going forward.

Doge has a great community, but it mints millions of coins everyday.  And with pools like middlecoin, all they do is mine and dump on the exchange.  So like Zzzack said, it takes a lot of new capital to buy up these mined/dumped coins to maintain the price.   This can be said of most scrypt coins, same with EAC, decent community but mining schedule/distribution is very expensive/flawed.

Also, ASIC scrypts are coming onto the scene most likely this year, which will shut the little guy out of mining scrypt coins and accelerate this problem.

Quark doesnt have this issue :)

Other coins I'd invest in are

LTC - this is the scrypt coin that will continue to beat out all others.
WDC - scharmbeck coming online, decent community.
maxcoin - coming out soon
LPC - possible sleeper coin, that could rise
2.0  - either nxt, emunie, or ether(horrible IPO structure) - emunie seems the best at the moment.

3. BBQcoin (best tasting paper wallet)

1. Dogecoin - The community is amazing, and the potential is huge. Proof? Compare its growth with any other coin in 7 weeks
2. Litecoin - Seems quite undervalued, and has a lot of potential to be easily integrated with all the merchants, businesses and services currently accepting bitcoin
3. Bitcoin - The one and only, also undervalued, but this year looks very promissing, especially with the news of Overstock and Tigerdirect
4. Vertcoin - An interesting response to Scrypt-ASICs, i'm keeping my eye on it
5. Pesetacoin - As a spanish, this one brings back so many fond memories :) Let's see if it manages to conquer the spanish market, especially as an underground alternative to the Euro, as the austerity continues to take its toll

My favorite:

1. Franko       (FRK)   (30s block, quite fast and the number of coins is quite low)
2. Fastcoin    (FST)    (Very fast, the first one aiming real time transaction)
3. Bbqcoin     (BBQ)   (old and reliable)
4. junkcoin    (JKC)    (A good one, still strong today)
5. worldcoin (WDC) (A strong alternate too)

All these cryptocurrencies are using scrypt. This is the best choice, as an efficient ASIC implementation is impracticable to have, and from a silicon company point of view, investing in a specialized scrypt chip will not offer any sufficient computing power gain to be interesting. So, scrypt is a very good hashing function, most of the other ones don't achieve this goal.

Infinitecoin (IFC)
Great community and a lot of new projects in the pipeline. One of the highest ROI coin in the past month. Great Investment.

Litecoin (LTC)
Looks still undervalued. Always rises more than Bitcoin. When bitcoin rose to 1200$ (6x returns from 200$), litecoin rose to about 40$ (20x returns from 2$)

Bitcoin (BTC)
This is still by far the most accepted coin. "Safest bet"

Other than these 3 I dont think jokes like dogs and cats and moons will go anywhere in the long run!

Quark kinda was a instamine. I mined quark 3 weeks after launch and i got a shit ton. I also SOLD 4/5 of it 5 weeks before the big quark boom. FML

My favorite are coins available for month now, and having good features. These coins will be still there, most of new coins added in the last weeks will have the same future?

1. FST fastcoin         - 12s blocks, the fastest, quite challenging.
2. MEC megacoin   - Is still there with solid value.
3. FLO florincoin      - featuring transaction comments.
3. DBL doubloons    - funny.
4. FRK franko           - above $1 for a very long time now
5  BBQ bbqcoin        - available for age now.

Scrypt is definitively today the right hashing function.

Are you spying me ??

I'm gonna explain once for all why Nxt is superior to Bitcoin.

People are irrational. For them, 1 Bitcoin is 1 Bitcoin but under 1 Bitcoin, it's nothing.
If they cannot count it with their fingers, that doesn't mean anything, that doesn't exit.

Here is a simple example for you to understand :

- Hello, a double-cheese-burger.
- 0.00242694883 BTC please.
- ?? ?? ?? ?

The same with Nxt :
- Hello, a double-cheese-burger.
- 30 Nxt please.
- Here is.
- Enjoy your meal sir.

I agree with you on NXT being superior, but the decimal argument just does not hold ground. It's just decimals, the comma can be moved etc. That cheese burger cost roughly 2,43 mBTC.

That is the thing - it is a great experiment in an alternative distribution model. I got in at just above todays prices, actually like 30% but I like the idea of something different here with distribution.
Hopefully more people sell at these levels then we can start a good ascent and test that network (considering the mining power is now down a bit.)

1. Bitcoin (BTC) - this is still the biggest and most widely adopted; would hold a min of 50% here
2. Litecoin (LTC) - undervalued relative to BTC but has a bright future in terms of adoption than half the altcoins
3. Bitshares (PTS) - interesting concept and gives access to future DACs. Worth looking into.
4. Ripples (XRP) - yeah cut me the centralized crap but this has backing of Silicon Valley (Andreessen Horowitz, Google Ventures, Lightspeed Ventures as well as China-based IDG Capital Partners etc)
5. DogeCoin (DOGE) - yeah yeah, it was based on an Internet meme but really this the only coin apart from BTC that my non-tech savvy wife wouldn't mind using ... it has mass appeal and the mascot is too cute for words.

I would also consider NameCoin, Peercoin (as long as they don't call it PeePee Coin) and Quark (lets get over the premine propaganda, also known as I-wish-I-Had-Mined-This)

Title: Re: What are your top 5 alt coins, in order?

(For reference, BTC needs 3 million and LTC needs 500k a day).

my question is...l.why,since bitcoin went down in value..dont we get more btc for are alt?????

why is the alt coin fallow ???

and  since the alt currency's are attached btc...well they must be included in the "need per day"????

Seriously, most alts just get lots of buz initially and then will die off.

Though IMHO, BTC and LTC will stay as digital Gold/Silver standard.

And there will be room for one more, as digital currency that ppl will use to buy/sell on a daily basis, like buying coffee. What that coin will be, I don't know, and it probably does not exist (not yet).

For now, enjoy the ride and make profit mining things like Dogecoin when the buzz is still hot :).

Mastercoin (MSC) - not an alt but a protocol (and not to be confused with MTC). Very early days but very exciting.
Peercoin (PPC)
Litecoin (LTC) - it seems closer to critical mass and capability to be spent in the real world than any other.
Namecoin (NMC)
Nextcoin (NXT)

Also, I like the older coins that offer something unique.
Primecoin (XPM)
Devcoin (DVC) - cheap as chips atm but I like the idea behind it.. that said I wonder this would need a big influx of devs to make it's arguement stand up.

and longshot penny stocks that could easily come alive in a big way, as simple alternate choices; obviously that could easily occur if ATMs and POS are capable of acknowledging any coin.. people like choice.
Worldcoin (WDC)
Feathercoin (FTC)
Quark (QRK)

QRK (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=260031.0) - Quark
CHC (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=422149.0) - ChainCoin
DRK (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=421615.0) - DarkCoin
MOL (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=371576.0) - Molecule
MMC (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=370806.0) - MemoryCoin

But still not found the "perfect one"

Great list!! CPU-mined coins are my favorite too!

People make a big deal about Vertcoin being ASIC resistant...but these coins have that AND more!

I haven't invested in DarkCoin yet because of how risky it could be, but I can't wait for that coin to be cloned. MMC is cool, they had some good ideas that others coins adopt. And QRK is obviously the high market cap/high development coin of your list.

!!This is just my opinion, not investment advices!!

[Nxt]

[eMunie]

[XCP]

[SkyCoin]

[MSC]

Pro-tip : Consider that no crypto-currency that you mine is interesting. It doesn't change anything to be ASIC or GPU resistant or mix mining algo. All mining coin consist of converting expensive hardware (ASIC/computers) and electricity to get Bitcoins (and FIAT).

Nothing is free, mining is an illusion for fools. You are destroying expensive hardware and using energy just to generate and secure coins (that you always end up converting to BTC then to FIAT).
If the cost of energy become superior to the profit from mining, the miners stop, the security is compromise and the coin become worthless.

All mining coin end up the same : zero value.

The case of Bitcoin is unique because it is the first crypto but I think it will end. All coins based on its layer will die too (XCP & MSC) unless they switch on top of a 100% PoS crypto which could be possible.

I would list 5 but i really like to concentrate on 1 coin at a time.

At the moment i am working with Prospercoin. It is quiet and building up slowly was not pre announced etc just soft launched and building slowly.

At the moment the diff is low between 1 and 2.5 depending as it uses kimotos so as miners come in and out the diff changes. The lead dev has real world development experience and is a business advocate in his country.

There has been an new multicoin to RPC exchange announced and is under development.

It is doing very well and people are buying it up on poloniex.com for a coin less than 2 weeks old this is good https://poloniex.com/exchange/btc_prc

Only 7200 are ever mined each day except on prosperdays when ther is a bonus applied.

There are shops etc in the line up and other ideas in the pipeline this coin will be used in the real world. Also the head dev is Cambodian Chinese so the Chinese market is being tapped slowly.

Unlike other pump and dump coins etc this coin is in no rush to make it to the top it is a slow long term investment with real development coming. It is not a short term get in get out coin so would be a great coin to diversify any coin portfolio Loz

The coin badge etc is down at the moment as the website is being updated https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=438433.0

as has been said before !!This is just my opinion, not investment advices!!

1 Dogecoin - big helpfull community which achieved much without PREMINE x% for promotion eg.
this is true... somehow i can't believe it, to now we have allmost 50% supply out.
Coin will have inflation 4% year but it will decrease that 4% over time because reward is constant.
If market could absorb all most 50% Doges at price ~200satoshi it will eat Doges to the end rewards haves every 2 months.
Commpared to Litecoin it is still undervaluated :) but it need some time to rise in price.

2 Annoncoin - unique coin TOR-support

3 Battlecoin BCX - i like concept behind it we will see what happened when arena will start.

4 Emunie - totally different coin than other coins buid in java not clone

5 TIPS - 1st coin mixig feature, cool community active Devs they are making something creative at least !

----------------------------------------
Quark - 98% premined are you kidding...
Litecoin get so popular just because it was ASIC resistant now with SCRIPT ASIC i don't see "that"
marketing advantage over Bitcoin. If i want faster coin i would choose Dogecoin,Zetcoin(not premined coins) or something else instead there are coins much faster than Litecoin and Bitcoin.

Quark is dead, please don't buy it anymore.
Because it was instamined, isn't it?

Unbelievable there are still people making a fool of themselves by posting stuff like this  :D

My list btw: quark, qubit, premine, doge, ...

Quark's security/speed is superior but its marketing isn't that great... Lets hope it won't turn in another  betamax-like story.

PremineCoin is a nice experiment.

And doge is the opposit of quark... Somewhat like VHS; great marketing. Just fun to see what they are doing, but i don't expect it to stay

Bitcoin - maybe not innovative and having its flaws but by far the best infrastructure and biggest community

Quark - active and fun community, ongoing innovative infrastructure projects, fast transaction, 6 types of encryption

NXT - innovative concept, I really like that it is eco-friendly like no other coin and it has coloured coins.

Ethereum - also not on the market and much more than a coin. Like NEX this is for me a promising and visionary project that is worth to invest in

Dogecoin  - Huh, Dogecoin? From a long term perspective Doge is probably a not sustainable project but it contributed to the public knowledge of Altcoins like no other coin and has for sure a likeable non-stuck-up community ;)

Even limiting to five I have to dip in to the ones I'm mostly taking a passing interest in. Really I have a top two:

Peercoin (PPC) I still love SHA but add in PoS and I like it even more.
Digitalcoin (DGC) Developer has put a lot of effort and resources into building trading and marketplace sites. Baritus gets that it's not really a currency if no one actually buys and sells stuff with it.

Then I get into coins about which I have interest in and am watching but for whatever reasons I'm not enthused about:

Namecoin (NMC) Great proof of concept (using the blockchain for practical purposes) and I shouldn't be disappointed if they haven't done more, but as a currency? Meh.
Vertcoin (VTC) Seems to be fighting ASICs the right way. Interesting. Plus it's green.

Then we have "honorable mention" which are coin I like for some reason or another but not enough to really take seriously. I've bought or mined these because I was amused or interested, and I keep my eye on them but ultimately they are nothing special to me. Maybe they have a name or a logo that I could see people using (sorry, so many coins out there won't even be adopted because their names have unfortunate implications) or some kind of buzz going around that caught my attention. I'm listing more than one because all together they all fit into the category of "other." I'm really just too lazy to pick one.

RonPaulcoin (RPC) Yeah, it's Dogecoin with a different meme.
Smartcoin (SMC) Um. Honestly, I think it's just because I find the logo soothing.
Saturncoin (SAT) Everyone's favorite planet, right?
Securecoin (SRC) If you like Quark's technology but hate Quark, then Securecoin is for you.

Now how about the ones I'm actively disinterested in?

  • Litecoin. Sorry, but I think adoption of a currency by people in general is important. Nobody wants their money to be less filling but tastes great. The name fails to inspire confidence.
  • Feathercoin. See Litecoin.
  • Terracoin. Too many forks to continue trusting. And sounds like "Terrorcoin" so, no.
  • Novacoin. Used by your dentist during your root canal.
  • Phoenixcoin. Really? You want to inspire confidence in your coin by invoking a mythical creature that burns itself to death periodically?
  • Casinocoin. Because currency really ought to be used for only one thing in one context. Riiiight.
  • Dogecoin. Yeah, we've all had our fun.
  • Maxcoin. Cult of personality. Yawn.
  • Devcoin. Can someone explain to me why Devcoin is somehow more "ethical" than other currencies? It's different because it is made for trading in services. Uh, yeah. You're saying it's more ethical than other currencies and unique unlike other currencies because it is a currency. Basicallly, see Casinocoin.
  • Mincoin. See Feathercoin.
  • Freicoin. Special contempt for Freicoin for one reason: demurrage. A little knowledge of economics is a pathetic and dangerous thing. Here's a cryptocurrency that managed to build in all the worst aspects of fiat currency. Yeah, thanks for the nifty fruitcake, it was delicious. Really, yes, I ate the whole thing.

1. Cryptogenic Bullion (based on PPCoin and Novacoin but with the difference of a fast PoW stage which is almost coming to the lowest reward structure so blockchain security can be done mostly by PoS, also only 1 million coins (2% inflation per year, like gold) , active community and new services being launched atm or still in works. Fair and energy efficient!! Heavy undervalued)

2. Bitcoin (just for being the true first cryptocoin)

3. Digitalcoin (active dev and the first lightweight wallet next to bitcoin, lots of services being build atm)

4. Protoshares (for being stakeholder in new ALTS/DACS built on top of the PTS framework)

5. PPcoin (for being PoS but its like most ALTS heavy influenced by inflation)

Title: Re: What are your top 5 alt coins, in order?
Post by: Philosophy4You on February 17, 2014, 01:04:06 AM
1.CryptoGenic Bullion because Proof of Stake and since it has almost been completely mined making it near a major value increase. Also since this crypto has gone under the radar so far, it is extremely underpriced and constantly on the rise which makes it a solid investment particularly for long-term investors. With only 1 million coins it only takes people to invest 1000$/day to sustain its price which sets it apart from the top coins (bitcoin, litecoin, dogecoin).

2. Dogecoin because of the awesome community, any coin with that kind of community will be successful for quite awhile at least.

3. Quark because of the community and the low $ need to sustain its price.

4. Bitcoin because after this recent crash it's got great return on investment opportunity for anyone buying in now.

5. 42 Coin because the volatility has been obscene which makes it super interesting and engaging for day trading small amounts of dispensable income

Bitshares X (BTSX) and NXT are the only ones worth anything in the long run. Sure others will rise and fall and be quite profitable in trading. But, if you want to capture wealth a year from now, you will invest in one of those or both. Otherwise just stick with BTC.

Alt coin comes and goes too fast. The current batch of "hot coins" are Ethereum, NXT, Monero, clock coin and Stellar.

But I don't think they will last more than 6 months.

LTC and DOGE are going to the moon with BTC. every altcoin spikes exponentially after BTC reaches new highs. I've been around for a few cycles and I can tell you when LTC breaks below 0.01 you will have a chance to triple your BTC in a matter of weeks if you buy the panic.

Don't buy into the panic! When all the sheep are selling, the sharks are buying  ;)

Jackpotcoin: Under the radar and unique. Pays a jackpot which can be 1-3 BTC in value. I have had a piece of the pie twice so far. You can stake your holdings and get paid interest.

Infinitecoin: Well established and drastically undervalued because all coins are pretty much mined. However you can mine transaction fees and difficulty is low. It once had a $7 million+ market cap and then dropped under $2 million. I see that as a great buying opportunity as the devs continue to work the coin.

No others on my radar other than old faithful: BTC!

My top 5 begin and end with XC & XCurrency.

Why?  See below:

Every XC wallet is automatically an Xnode and no balance needs to be held in it (aka, completely decentralized).

Privacy Mode is on-chain, and breaks transactions into fragments and utilises trustless mixing to forward fragments on to the recipient. (It's not a ring signature either; it's a unique m-of-m multisig transaction.)

  • Since every node forwards fragments, there's no telling whether a node is the originator or final receiver of a fragment. Therefore receiver/sender address is concealed.
  • Since fragments are sent, there's no telling what the full amount of any given transaction is. Therefore the amount sent/received is concealed.
  • Since trustless mixing is m-of-m multisig, no node can steal coins. They can either sign or opt out. (In the latter case, fragments are sent via spare nodes).

XC will soon be adding "stealth addresses" to its arsenal. This will allow the receiver to publicise a receiving address, while payments sent to it will arrive in another address, prevent associating the receiver with amounts received.

Finally XC nodes can run as TOR nodes, so that not only are their IP addresses concealed, but since they do not use exit nodes they're immune to packet sniffers.

As such, XC claims to be completely private. Sender address, receiver address, amount, and IP address are all kept private.  Future developments will allow increasing control over degrees of privacy, enabling XC transactions to be flexible and tailored to a wide variety of use-cases.

In addition to completely anonymous transfers, XC has XChat, instant p2p encrypted messaging (also available on the XC TOR Stick, www.xcmerch.com).  XC is also developing encrypted voice + video to be used across PC & mobile platforms.

You can study some discussions about anonymity and especially Monero anonymity in the following thread, where fluffypony, one of the devs, explained about it:

LTC and NMC, maybe Dimecoin because it won't die, is SHA3,  will make you money if you buy now and has a genuinely honest dev.

DVC perhaps, but weird that it keeps getting dumped. Is this the cult of merge mining cast-offs from those using cloud services?

DVC needs a strategy, but perhaps it has one.

A fifth .... hmmm .... I'll give it to DRK, just because it makes up the numbers.

Prerequisites for a coin to be legit: 100% POW, innovative, fair launch, 100% open source

Top 5 Coins meetings these criteria, in chronological order:

LiteCoin
- established ecosystem, critical mass, created by Charles Lee of Google/CoinBase

PrimeCoin - POW is trippy math research, created by Sunny King of Peercoin

Monero - ring signatures provide true privacy, unlike silly obfuscation-based CLOAK/DARK/BLACK/XC

Boolberry - ring signatures with significant tweaks/possible improvements over Monero

CryptoNite - two major breakthroughs in one coin: safe zero-confirmation transactions and prunable mini-blockchains

So you're issue with Darkcoin is that it is not yet fully open source correct?
Are you sure you want to be throwing out words like that? Have you checked out DRK after the update?
The anonymity part of it works, and more is planned for the next one. Indeed Monero does provide privacy but so does DRK. I guess people should wait for this guy https://twitter.com/anonymouscoin to release his review of the code.
I'd put my bets at DRK and Monero right now, while there are a few other interesting other coins.

Darkcoin fails all four prerequisite tests for legitimacy, not just one!

100% open source?  No.  Dark fails this one.
100% POW?  No.  Dark fails here too.
Innovative?  No.  Obfuscation based coins are not innovative and just copy silly mixers; ring signatures are true innovation.
Fair launch?  No.  Dark fails again, thanks to it's massive pre/insta mine and bogus emission curve.

This is why the market is punishing greedy/naive Dark bagholders and rewarding savvy Monero investors.

And let's not even get into the hilarity of losing your Dark in a Madoffnode Ponzi collapse, as happened to DZ's suckers inves-durrs.

You can't compare basic obfuscation based coins with Darksend+. You're making a mistake there. The anonymity is proven to work, you should wait for the audit from K.A. then if you doubt it.
It will be open source after the audit or RC5 so it's not that far away.
People tend to say that Bitcoin was instamined because Satoshi mined so many coins don't they? The same could be said here.

It'll be funny to watch you blather about "true innovation" when Darkcoin goes open source and captures the vast majority of the anonymity market. Try explaining what makes the coin anonymous to those who couldn't care less ( basically everyone outside of programmers and cryptographers).

I wouldn't call these "instamines" equivalent, as Satoshi was basically the only one mining, whereas with Darkcoin, the launch was announced and many people mined. Although to his credit,  Satoshi did invite others to mine at some point, it was just that no one cared to do so.

Even when Dark releases its code, it still fails the "100%" requirement for open source, along with the other three tests for legitimacy (innovation, fair launch, POW).

Monero and Boolberry's ring signatures are the only technology available for cryptographically provable privacy.

The rest, Dark included, rely on variations of mix and shuffle based obfuscation.  Security in obscurity?  No thanks, but you kids have fun.

You keep blathering about what astonishing feats of difficult, unprecedented computer science and cryptography Dark is 'gonna' do in the future, 'gonna' do in two weeks, and 'gonna' do SoonTM.

That makes Dark yet another GonnaCoin, powered by hype and hope, just like Cloak, XC, and Black.

OK, to be fair, Dark is actually the market leader in GonnaCoin scams.

;D  That's why Dark was voted King Shitcoin:

An audit from K.Atlas was promised. Did we get it? He's working on it right now and made a update recently.
RC5 is next and after which the coin is going open source. Anything else that you are concerned with?

I do not have five. I posted two before but have added one more to the mix.

1) Jackpootcoin
2) Infinitecoin
3) Monero - my new favorite

Not an alt but old faithful Bitcoin will always be my favorite coin. It is widely accepted and the standard. I do not see anything replacing it but I can see Monero being second best to it and leaving Litecoin in its dust.

It'll be funny to watch you blather about "true innovation" when Darkcoin goes open source and captures the vast majority of the anonymity market. Try explaining what makes the coin anonymous to those who couldn't care less ( basically everyone outside of programmers and cryptographers).

This is nothing but flat out lies. Gonna release x11, gonna release dgw, gonna release dark send, gonna release dark send+, gonna release rc4, gonna have atlas perform audit. Shall I continue?

You have done nothing but completely discredit yourself. If you only talking points are easily disproved lies I suggest everyone just ignore you.

I want to bump this again. Notice how this liar did not respond once called out. Don't believe anything anyone says, verify facts for yourself!

well , on one hand, that's the reason why people choose these coins, on the other hand, these coins have become the most favorite because of the people! So, this is a vicious circle  :)

IMO, Darkcoin and Bitcoin (in case we talk about all coin not only bitcoin alternative coins) is good one and, and, TBH, two of the coins I've invested in. I also have invested in Bytecoin (BCN) and Fantomcoin (FCN)

Bitcoin will always be the POW king, but I can foresee some good competition from a POS or other type of staking method that is more energy efficient.

I agree with you. Nowadays Bitcoin is an undisputed leader though it's a lit bit late to start mining , better to buy some coins and get profit from buying/selling strategy. Even it's volatile it's less volatile than altcoins because of their little credibility, altcoins, I think, is going to replace Bitcoin. And it won't be Litecoin to replace BTC as it's dead.

I am not a game changer, but I do read a lot. So with that out, Cann is going to make everyone realize that you can peg a coin value whether you like it or not. Bitcoin will drop to 300 bucks and hang and ltc will die out and be taken over by some other coin that someone with money wants to succeed. Do you see what I am saying here, You do not decide, only a few people decide.

That's a great point. If you look at what is still around, it's LTC, PPC, DOGE, NMC, FTC (barely). The $hitcoins come and go.  A clearly excellent coin that few know about is Unobtanium $UNO.

If you look at the coin, it had as clean of a start as possible, no pre-mine, no unfair advantages, nothing. It is extremely rare as there are only 250,000 ever to be mined.

UNO has a great and active community. Wonderful developers too! There was one large pump by Wolong and then the coin declined and has been steadily growing in value ever since.

Another great feature is convertibility between UNO and precious metals on the in-house exchange. You can check that our here:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=757232

For the long-term, UNO will be a great store of value.  If you only pick up 50 or 100 of them, you'll be really glad that you did in a few years. This is definitely not a pump and dump scheme.  Check it out:

Unobtanium (and Nxt!) And note that 'low volume' is a sign of health in this case!

Unique Technology is not the most important part of a coins health. I am going to go with #1 trading volume, #2 hashing or similar measure of active distributed network, #4 contributions by individual developers, #5 people that actually use it for things other than speculation

By those measure Dogecoin has most coins beat by 10X, not  exaggerating here, they are #3 in volume, with merge mining they will be #3 in hashing, #2 in dev contributions, #2 in people using for things other than trading.

Dogecoin will be here in 10 years.

Lol. I've not really bothered with alt coins since I got initially got into bitcoin as they were all just the same with the same empty promises but they all had one goal in mind: make their devs a lot of money and fuck everyone else.

1. BTC
2. HBN
3. TEK
4. CAP
5. PHS

I'm all in POS coins  ;D
All my POS coins are generating 0,25-0,3BTC/month interest (at actual prices) which is pretty cool :)

1. BTC (obvious)
2. DOGE  (community is a very underrated part of a coin IMO)
3. ETH (very exciting if they can do what they say)
4. Blank (Think there is no value in anything else, maybe put the best POS coin here)
5. Blank

If it ain't got privacy baked in, it ain't worth looking at.

Darkcoin - Reasons here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=579976.msg6335710#msg6335710) and here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=761561.msg8585129#msg8585129)

Monero - Work in progress, still a while to go to work out best way forward. Considering doing a full review in January, as above.

Darkcoin doesn't have "privacy baked in" because it uses coinjoin obfuscation like a frosting on top.

Monero OTOH is intrinsically private because it uses ring signatures - no need to trust master nodes and whatnot.

1. Dogecoin / DOGE - for its community
2. Monero / XMR - for the full anonymity and the dedication of its devs
3. Heavycoin / HVC - for its innovation at that time. I really hope it will not die.
4. MidasCoin - the idea behind it sounds good and plausible. But it's too early to know if it's a scam or not.

(1)  BTC - still dominant, could change within 6 months
........... - you will never see velocity or $10,000, but it's a core holding like gold

(2)  LTC - scrypt far from dead, 2nd most secure coin, better value than BTC
........... - it's about security, security, security, stupid... could double any time

(3)  NXT - dodgy or not, this will fly, *** hit "simplicity sweet spot" dead on ***
..........  - any small businessman can master NXT and launch an IPO in weeks
........... - despite being effectively controlled by ONE PERSON, NXT Asset Exchange is taking off
..........  - all other Gen 2.0 are either useless (XCP) or too complex for non-engineers (XRP)
..........  - biggest problem is centralization, US govt could shut it down in hours

(4) BC... - amazing PoS story, great community, BitHalo

(5) VIA.. - 2 world class developers (drak/todd) will figure it out
...........  - told you scrypt not dead, when PoS and Gen 2.0 assets start blowing up, PoW makes BIG comeback
...........  - 24 sec blocks, designed as currency, not e-gold for hoarders like BTC

BONUS

(6) CNMT - will be major players on exploding NXT exchange and, of course, jl777 heavily invested

I give you the best advice ever.  8)

Take your time for doing your own research.

Don't listen to trolls ( you can find them almost everywhere in the altcoin section).

Try your luck with your chosen alternates.

you must be new to bitcointalk in that case, any thread where there's an opinion asked for, is seen as an advertisement for coins, and is therefore jumped on by those wanting to do so.

You have to understand that unless an altcoin bring unique and concrete innovations, it is just an other pump&dump and the value will eventually go down to zero.

What is not an unique and concrete innovation :

 - a different algorithm
 - a mix of different algorithm
 - a funny meme
 - a coin mixer
 - a nice looking logo
 - a fair distribution
 - a html5 wallet
 - an Android or iOS client

...

1) Nxt
2) BTC

That's about it..  BitShares might be worth looking at and Ethereum might provide something interesting but hard to speculate considering they say they don't think they'll have anything working until Feb.

In my opinion, Nxt is by far the most interesting.  Lots of very good stuff going to be released in the near future.

It's hard to say these days , but I would stick to the old ones like LTC, PPC and NMC, of the new generation BlackCoin and DarkCoin have potential and Monero as well, Vericoin has a big community but these coins are still only 5-6 months old, so it's still more risky than sticking with the coins released in 2011-12.

1) Neoscoin

Neos is my Number one (around 80%). It's still under the radar and the price suffers from the bad mood in Crypto in general, but I'm convinced that many ppl who got scammed will find Neos. And we all now: If all money would flow out of the Scam and Shitcoins, it would be a lot for all the serious and honest projects. And that dynamic will come. The Neos-Team is very skilled, the Main-Dev (Syntaks) is the best Dev I've ever seen. Always working, always there to answer questions or help people, transparent about what they are doing but never hyping, "just" constant delivering what's promised. Neos time will come if this "Crypto-Scam-Shitcoin-Depression" is overcome.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=835131.0

2) BitcoinDark

I was there when they started and James came to BTCD and I liked the idea, so I bought and it was the best profit so far (safed me because of some bad Investments). I think, BTCD is one of a few coins that has longterm-potential if their plans work out. I'm not so sure about SuperNet. My personal view is, that BTCD could suffer if SuperNet should fail. But if not... I will buy SuperNet, too. Watching but waiting.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=684090.0

Than I own a few Stealthcoin, some Shadowcoin, very little Craigscoin (more as a longterm-bet because I like the idea but it looks bad right now), the dead Guerillacoin (huge mess I've never really understood what happened, always hoped there would be a change) and ... oh yes: 80 frozen Litecoins (Vircurex).

I should say: I'm always on the search for longterm-potential, I'm not a trader. Sometimes it turns out very bad (Gue... or Cloak - sold it all), but therefore I'm convinced that Crypto will turn out as a game-changer and become a professional part of financial industry, it won't need much money in the right Projects for huge profit in future. Thats why I always look at the Devs. So far, Neos is the only one (I know) I see all what I want to see and the only Coin I'm not scared about low prices. Quality needs time but it will win in longterm. Nearly all the pumped Hypes are down now and many won't coma back. And the new Projects will face hard times, because all the doubts and fear of getting scammed. That's why I think, the next evolution-step will focus real professionalism instead of scams, hypes, manipulation and failed promises and that will bring some changes.
