Like all digital technology, it is unquestionable that sooner or later bitcoin will have to be replaced by a superior technology, just as in the past we saw many devices become obsolete when at the time seemed insurmountable, such as CDs or PCs.

Obviously this will happen in a gradual way, but I do not believe that bitcoin can retain its current dominance for more than ten years before starting to fall into disuse, although perhaps its influence could persist in the market about ten years.

In the end, bitcoin is likely to subsist for many years, but by then it will have evolved in such a way that it will be virtually unrecognizable for today’s standards, and in fact it is difficult that in 15 years there is something similar to the current cryptocurrencies before the spectacular advances in digital technology that are approaching.

bitcoin can last forever, as long as we are made aware when devs have given up on bitcoin. to boot them out and get new talent in, willing to keep bitcoin innovative onchain

physical media does have a shelf-life before it wares out
physical media has a limitation to what can be unscrewed, unslotted and upgraded before its obsolete.
so yea PC's and CD's do get replaced by new tech.

but digital can be tweaked, recoded and updated daily and still function.
as long as the digital item still has a function and purpose people need. people will use it. and others will maintain it

at the moment we are seeing a bit of a battle going on where bitcoin devs are actually saying blockchains and bitcoin is broke and wont work by saying it cant scale and it cant buy coffee. in an attempt to give up upgrading bitcoin. but instead tweaking bitcoin to be compatible with a different network that is not blockchained. and then push people into using that other network

importantly LN is not a bitcoin feature. LN is a separate network that will be used by multiple coins and will inherently be final designed to get people to lock funds into addresses that 'banks' own, called factories. and then on the other network away from the blockchain. have the factories drip feed down 'value' to 'bank branch' hubs. which then feed users 'account' channels with value. whereby closing an account is not exiting LN to a blockchain but refeediing the funds back up to the 'bank branch' hub and then to the 'bank' factory so that the bank can then re drip feed another account.. keeping people away from the bitcoin blockchain as much as possible.(research: LN factory)

but the good thing is. we can actually pushback and get them deceptive devs who want to call bitcoins utility broke. to get out of their role. if they cant fix it on the mainnet then they are outdated and need to be replaced. and then get those that really support bitcoin to concentrate on bitcoin mainnet innovation and growth. not them silly other networks

Though nothing on earth last forever. Still yet we can't still say that bitcoin won't last forever because we haven't still yet still see what bitcoin really have for this digital world century. But I must still say that, bitcoin might not last 3 decades more.

zcash, dash, bitcoin cash, bitcoin sv, etc. all can survive only as long as the people buy the premine of the developers, and they only are being upkept and marketed as long as they do that.

CDs are a weak analogy.  Code is more flexible in what it can do and how easy it is to change.  As such, Bitcoin is in a much better position to adapt than any sort of physically manufactured product. 



How does this make any sense?  It's going to evolve but still be obsolete?  Which is it?

New technology are more happenny accepted into the world and bitcoin as the mainstream manifestation of the blockchain technology was accepted and to my understanding this bitcoin survival solely depend on the developers either to sustain the technology or to forfeit the technology.

I have thought of this many times and have said it also that more greater innovation will come in some years in the future that will surpass bitcoin and blockchain technology as we know it. There is a saying that there is no master for life which means everyoje can be master at different time. Just that bitcoin will continue to trend till many years to come after major adoption and great incorporation.

Bitcoin exists because of the technology within it, which is the blockchain. We all know that technology is changing through time. In our lifetime, maybe bitcoin will flourish. But, as time goes by, new technology will come and for sure it qould be better. For the meantime, this the time for bitcoin amd its technology.

First and foremost, there's no such thing as forever. We human beings have brilliant minds and every year there are new inventions or projects that are being discovered for the benefit of mankind in the name of technology. We are moving forward into a digital world where people are hungry for new ideas and innovations but I'm pretty sure that the dominance of bitcoin will prevail up to 20 years or more. Bitcoin is the mother of all coins and it's not that easy to replace the very first application of the blockchain.

Every success of a new crypto that's being introduced into the market depends on bitcoin's value. So as a whole if bitcoin's value falls so as the alt coins. The best thing we need to do is not to make bitcoin's image a bad one instead promote it for the benefit of the crypto market as a whole.

Nothing will last forever but it will certainly last longer than 10 years. The most important part of something lasting for a long time is ability to be maintained and upgraded. BTCitcoin have bring us a great feature of monetary system that world has never seen before. This is just the beginning of something great. Don't be afraid investing into it as long as you don't see some major outbreak in technology that will be much better which will happen eventually at some point where we as a human species will evolve dramatically with AI singularity.

-Everything is open source, quantum computers are threat but they can be countered by development and adding more digits.
-Government cannot ban it. They can but... they can't stop it. It would just take longer time to adopt it.
-You have gov. and major corporations who might want to centralize or take over it but again you have the same thing in market stocks while blockchain gives you more comfort zone while anything can happen with stocks.

If you are afraid of it the best advice from me would be that you should never invest into something that you don't feel comfortable with. Never invest more than you are ready to lose and never invest into just 1 project because as my personal moto says: "anything can happen"  ;)

Is investing in bitcoin a good idea?

Bitcoin is like a program. Look at Windows. Would you say in 1995 that it is not going to last forever? It didn't, in the form that it had in that year, but I'm still using a windows Machine, only that it's a bit different from the machine that I had in 95. Bitcoin can survive for a 100 years if it has a community behind it and that community is active, like the one we have now. I agree that nothing lasts forever but it can last for as long as we need it to last.

Even if bitcoin gets demoted into a coin only priced based on sentimental value "for the good ol' times", I'm pretty sure that its successor will have its ANN thread started on this very forum.
So we need to be vigilant and join the early adopters.

It's better to believe for the new technology wil not last forever, Because new technology gives benefits this new currency bitcoin or virtually cryptocurrency using the new technologies.

Doesn't matter digital or any kind of technology, we humans develop nonstop. Imagine, at first we were exchanging some items in another items, then we created something that would be beneficial and acceptable for exchange for everyone and created coin, then china made better, more flexible version of it, paper money. Then we created pc, internet and online money came from it. This is not the end and we created something new and unique, cryptocurrency. This won't be end and in future there will be some kind of moneh which maybe we can't even dream now, we always improve, it's just our nature.
P.S bitcoin will be well for years but don't know what will happen once all coin will be mined :)

Nothing around us will last forever. The computer I'm using now will only last a few years, but I'm confident BTC will last many more decades. Even if the network's going down to 2 computers, BTC can keep on going. The real question is how many people will keep on using it. I hope it will grow, and each time I'm watching the news, I see reasons to be hopeful. I see larger and larger deficits in most countries. I see more and more taxes to try to curb those deficits. I see more and more civil unrest, the yellow vests people in France, the occupy people in the US... Sooner or later, people will realize that BTC is a safe way to keep your savings, and to do business outside of the eyes of the devil, the taxman.

Generaly I agree that nothing lasts forever and has to end some day in some way.
Still that day will not come so soon for Bitcoin. I think it will last as long as their users support it. It's also true that probably some more developed and sophisticated technology will replace Bitcoin but no one can say if and when this is going to happen. Maybe Bitcoin will not end but just transforme to some other version, similar like paper money is transfering to digital and virtual money but this is also hard to guess.
Anyway, I think that Bitcoin will last many years from no one and at the moment I'm not worried what will happen once is gone. This might not happen in my lifetime.

Anything is never permanent in this world , yes Bitcoin also will decline , same goes with Currencies of nations like USD they also will decline. But we have to understand that Bitcoin is pretty much very young it will bloom with time. Technology will be developed and Blockchain will also be developed.

There many technology to come and once they are on the old goes away like you trying to say but bitcoin is a digital currency that is used to trade and exchange of value while we have alts too which is the second way to transfer the value to each other I don't see btc becoming obsolete in 10years time but will be much stronger as the time for useful is yet to come and the number of user are still very low to the general population.

Yes that is the truth, bitcoin will not last forever there are no things in this world that will last forever ,it will be replace with a new one , like the generation of human it changes as the decades come to an end , so for this bitcoin , when the time it will be gone ,there would be a new technoloy that would replace for this current technology, and could be more than bitcoin.

Yes we know that there was ending. Bitcoin is just like love that has ups and down, and also we both all know that nothing last forever. All things in the world has an ending. Maybe now bitcoin is dropping next year bitcoin will go up. And someday we will have a new currency something like bitcoin and we will forget bitcoin and that is the start of shutting down.

I believe on the same thing though as to when it can culminate nobody can be sure. Bitcoin is the pioneering one and that paved the way for many of its own competitors in the market and we know that it has some limitations and many challenges...soon there can be one cryptocurrency that might be replacing it but of course we still don't know which can it be. As of the moment, we are not sure if bitcoin will not run in the future. Indeed that everything now is keep on replacing a much better things but I believe since there are no traces and clues that bitcoin will be replace by other, I will keep on holding to bitcoin no matter what and enjoy its benefits to me.

 According to my point of view I disagree with this point that bitcoin will not survive but it can survive  . Since Bitcoin is a digital decentralized currency that can be operated world wide, and the  features of Bitcoins are attractive and is linked with  the block chain technology, and its all transactions are recorded  in an electronic ledger . The block chain ensures the clarity and security systems of Bitcoin and controls the Bitcoin for the proper functioning . There is no third party interference in the transaction of bitcoin . Bitcoin is  a new form of economy and totally contrary to the present economical concepts and found it  suitable to the modern world . Bitcoin is limited to 21 million and  when  it reaches to 21 million the production will stop then naturally the price will increase, when the supply is stopped its market demand will increase and hence its price can shoot up . No one can prophesy what will happen the coming years.

If we see the fact, bitcoin still have high demand as the value is quite enough.

There's no assurance in this market that's fot sure. Bitcoin may be around in 10 years or more, or it may be replaced by another more valuable coin. Or the society people live in in the future may not have any use for digital assets. I don't think many people expect btc to last forever anyway.

Of course. Nothing will last forever. Eventually everything will get replaced. But, this replacement is not going to be instant. It will probably takes decades before the replacement takes place. Like look at what happened to VHS tapes and VCRs. We don't use them anymore because something better has been developed which eventually took over. The same thing might happen with crypto currencies. They will be replaced with something better, but will take long enough before it actually happens.

Maybe for you mate bitcoin will not last forever, but for bitcoin fanatic of course they will hold to this belief.

Nothing last forever so it is possible that bitcoin will one day be replaced by something more suprior but for now bitcoin is still the best with the attached blockchain technology. Bitcoin has been around for ten years now and it is still waxing strong leading other altcoin both in price and volume.

True, nothing will last forever but from my own researches, bitcoin will last longer and there is no sign yet for its existence will be gone. It may be replaced by the other technology someday but it won't happen soon. I imagine the utility of bitcoin will last forever, but not its value as a speculative investment. Predicting the future is tough but I'm betting on Elixxir, David Chaum's new project to gain market share where BTC was intended.  It's been shown by David Chaum and David Schwartz of Ripple that you still need very high on chain throughput to satisfy global acceptance.  You can't rely on LN or other off chain solutions entirely.  With BTC only processing 32 transactions per second instead of the 750,000- 1MM per second needed I don't see how BTC can adapt in this regard.  Of course, its not just about speed.  You also have to be environmentally sustainable and with BTC energy consumption last year as high as the Czech Republic and not even being used at scale yet this is catastrophic.  Elixxir has a brilliant consensus mechanism thats fast, sustainable and secure.  Of course, XRP will be the global standard "glue" tying fiat and any other crypto's together as a bridge asset worldwide.  Its also scalable, secure and sustainable.  XRP, Elixxir and FCT will do extremely well and for BTC to be relevant in 5 years it needs to make dramatic and very fast adjustments.

We have to be aware that we will not last forever as well and I firmly believe that BTC will outlive a lot of us. At the given moment, BTC is the best that block chain as a newest technology has to offer.

I don't think anyone can honestly assume whether Bitcoin will last forever vs not. It's kind of like estimating when the world is going to end, I'm sure it's plausible, but when? 10yrs, 20yrs, 1000yrs, 10,000 yrs?

I do think Bitcoin can adapt to technological advancements in order to still stay relevant.

I think bitcoin is the last currency. there will be no more currency innovations until third world battles. bitcoin will be a transaction tool used by the public in the future. we will wait for bitcoin to spread amid the public perfectly. so. bitcoin is our hope now and in the future.

Its quiet unfortunate that you do not think Bitcoin can last forever. What people need to understand and know is that Bitcoin is like the physical fiat just that it is a digital form of it.  Fiats and accept currencies are things people can't stop using. It acts as a means for people to exchange their goods and services. Just like physical fiat, Bitcoin is used for the transaction of goods and services which is a strong indication that its gonna keep around for a long time.

Am always of the consiousness about bitcoin and nothing else so even if it will stay forever of not all i do hope for and put my effort is to se bitcoin doing exploit and in so doing i believe we can all secure the future of bitcoin. whether it will be forever or not depends on us now and let us look into the fure ans secure bitcoin forever because it is the hope of the world. NO matter what technologies will come i hope bitcoin willbe upgraded to fit.

A lot of known people said that Bitcoin is just a bubble, a bubble that one day will explode and it would also not stick for long as well, as they said it, it is a bubble and bubbles don't stick that long. For me, with some supporters making their moves to lengthen the life of that bubble, we can prove that they are wrong. If they don't want to invest just let them be, we have our own, they have their own.

We cannot really tell ahead of time what may happen in the nearer future with Bitcoin. I don't think its going to die that easy. Bitcoin would not have lasted this long if it has not delivered excellently. Its demand is still increasing day by day, and I believe that despite volatility there are still big percentage of people who are aware of its real nature and still trust its extraordinary potential. As technology continues to evolve, there will be more developments expected to come that will make Bitcoin to have a long way to go. With strong unity and support from its people, Bitcoin will continue to dominate in the crypto world.

It was a very great concept, fantastic and promising BUT too ideal to happen. Crypto revolution could be very easy to implement if boundaries, wars and hatred are not present for each nation across the globe (not mentioning the different opinions regarding the blockchain technology) because cooperation and unity is the only key to achieve that but since it's not then maybe (just maybe) that dream csn't be put into reality forever.

This is what we call reality of crypto currency or any other technology. I think 10 to 15 years is very long time, it will be finished in less time. Technology is obsoleting rapidly, Just look at the android versions, how quickly they are modifying from 1.0 to now 9.0. from 2008 to 2018, there are almost 17 versions. We should think on this as well, there is a chance that it may get more famous when it is obsolete.

As long as we can use the opportunity as you said, we don't have to afraid or worry if bitcoin will end in someday. Even though nothing lasts forever, and something new will replace the current technology we can still use, love and support Bitcoin as it is the pioneering coin. It brings life to Altcoins that is why Alts are pretty dependent to Bitcoin in terms of price flow on the market. Altcoins are new and there are even hundreds created every single day but where are they now? What I mean is those new advanced and improved technologies are still following Bitcoin's track.

I do not agree to OP as:

1) Since everything is digital in case of bitcoins, we can simply do tweaking as per the demands of the users in future and support it.

2) Bitcoin has already survived and grown strongly in past few years. This has happened when many of the technologies invented at the time of bitcoin had already been replaced.

We have no one who can ensure the future especially in the period of 10 years and above. In my opinion it is very difficult to be able to know the future of crypto, because this technology is still relatively new so it will continue to grow. Maybe you are right that sooner or later bitcoin will definitely be replaced by a better one, this is natural because the more advanced technology will be updated and the old will become obsolete. It all depends on the development, if bitcoin develops very well and many people who use it for positive things of course this will be a guarantee to continue to exist. but if bitcoin doesn't develop and continues to fall it will definitely be the end. But I am sure that the next 10 years bitcoin will continue to grow.

Last week I met an article about Bitcoin. The guy calculated that all of BTC will be mines approximately in 2140-2141. I think it is a very long time. Therefore, calm down and work with the crypto.

We don't have to compare the life time of technology with currencies,in real life we may need new technology too often but when it comes to payment system we are using it for too long so once we are settling into something of paymet system we are not going to chenge it for few more generations.

That is already a long year and i guess it is already satisfying enough to enjoy bitcoin plus who will know if we  were still alive on that year .  bitcoin or any other cryptos are only a kind of e currencies and if ever they end soon , we can still have other currencies and payment methods to use that are much better than them  and for sure inventors can always discover or create a replacement that can even make our lives more easier which is also better than cryptocurrencies  .
