People are so strange.  You dont write a movie about something like this until it has done all the incredible things it's going to do.

Otherwise you end up with a half-assed movie.

People need time for the legacy to sink in.  The depth of the change it will make needs to be fully realized and appreciated first.

The Vietnam war movies came in the 80's, 15 years after the war, when the damage emotionally and socially had been fully realized.  Some of the most powerful movies that came out, hands down.

While I applaud this kind of mainstream media and would be perfectly happy if Bitcoin was the cryptocurrency that smashes control of the banks and FED. why is there never much mention of possible successors like NXT etc.

I know BTC is the main story but I bet there will be little mention of alternative crypto in the whole mainstream discussion.

Saw few threads about this movie "the rise and rise of bitcoin"  few months ago but still no one knows the exact  release date of this movie but several people are saying that It'll come out This year (2014).

This movie is outdated the minute it comes out. As so much is happening and so many has changed in a few months time.

they wrote in their twitter account, that they are searching for a company which produces and distributes the film. so i guess it will take some months.

Beautifully filmed. Very professionally done. They bitcoin miner from Pittsburgh who we follow through the story on his journeys in mining (he too get's screwed by BFL) and meeting a who's who list of bitcoin is very sympathetic.

The film does goes flat in places, 1) where they again try to explain bitcoin with confusing graphics and 2) as there are so many different stories to tell you sometime lose the thread as they jump from story to story. But these are minor points. There was a moment in the film where they are interviewing Charlie Shrem a year or two ago (who was also in the audience) and he's saying something like "I'm very nervous about all this regulation, We are trying to do everything right, I don't want to go to jail, I don't want to be a martyr." and I swear you could hear a pin drop in the theater as everyone there new what has happened since. Very powerful moment. A

Anyone in bitcoin or interested in bitcon should definitely see this film. It is a little snapshot of bitcoin 1.0. I didn't want it to end. And so much continues to happen after the time period the film ends there certainly is and will be more of the story to tell. The Director did say at the talk back after the film that they had a ton of footage that they did not make into the file.

 I'd also love to see the Director cut with that footage as well. Congrats to all involved.

If only there was a person on the board of The Bitcon Foundation who has connections in Hollywood. But, what are the chances of that?

That would be the smart way to do it but the big money is in a theater/DVD release. I'm surprised there isn't already a cam version from Tribeca floating around. Anyway, I can't wait to see it!

DVD release is a complete loss in today's world. Whatever method u apply, it can be forged and duplicated easily. So DVD release should come at last or not come at all. Theatre/Online is the best way to earn for film producers.

Maybe we'll get it on Netflix or Amazon Prime soon. That would be nice and convenient. I don't pay for either of them but if it goes to either one of those the torrent will follow within one day.

Hi everyone,

This is Ben from The Rise and Rise of Bitcoin.  First off, thank you all for your continued support.  We've been working full-time on this film for what seems like a lifetime now!  (And it's been worth every second).  To address a few of the questions that have come through on here, we have been working on the final edit of the film up until this past week.  The premiere at Tribeca was an early draft that we screened in order to showcase the film to distributors.  It is now officially done and we are prepping it for distribution.

We have always believed that a slightly more traditional release with the film would inevitably do the most good in reaching the widest audience.  On average, a documentary with traditional distribution will reach between 10x and 50x more viewers than a strictly digital release.  The flip side is that it does take a bit longer as well.  Translation into multiple languages, QC for each territory, separate frame rate outputs, marketing deals with third party distributors, networks, and partners...  all these things add a bit of extra time to a release, and trust me when I say that if it wasn't worth it in the end, we wouldn't be doing it.  We're as eager as anyone to get the film out.  But we want to give it the best chance at making the biggest impact for Bitcoin as a whole, by reaching people that are interested in learning more about Bitcoin without them having to scour the internet for reliable sources.  They'll be able to passively learn, simply by watching the film locally or directly on their TV.

I can sense the frustration in a few of the posts on here, and I can totally understand where it's coming from, but please...  just stick with us a little while longer.  We're Bitcoiners too, and we're working hard to represent Bitcoin to the masses in the best way possible.  And now that the film is officially done, we wanted to make sure that the first eyes to see the film are those of Bitcoiners.  That's why we're screening the brand new edit at The North American Bitcoin Conference on Friday.  I really hope to see you there.  And if you do attend, please feel free to come up and ask any questions you like after the screening.

I think this is actually a good idea :).   I think you would make a pretty decent revenue stream if you sold pay per view online or something like that.   Maybe charged extra for a downloadable copy...

Wow, cool...I was just thinking about googling this to see if there were any updates on a public release.  Thanks for the info.  From what I read, they were still adding more footage after the Tribeca Film Festival right?   So the content may not be as old as we all thought it would be by the time it reached the public...

Not sure. But, I think beyond that date U'll be able to download the movie from iTunes and by the end of this year this movie will hit box office for sure resulting in a price rise for growing demand starting in January.

Standard investing wisdom says, when the price is rising, sell. Went the price is dropping, buy.

The method for buying and selling should be based on a general program of buy or selling in chunks. Markets generally do not make long-term moves overnight. There are exceptions, like Microsoft in its early days. And, there are many penny stocks that disappear forever. But generally, do something like increasing or decreasing your holdings by a percentage or amount you are comfortable with, on a regular basis.

If the market is dropping, buy, a little this week, a little next week, a little the following week, and so on. If the market is rising, sell, a little this week, a little next week, a little the following week, and so on. Make your own rules and follow them.

Use a percentage of your balance for selling. That way you always remain in the market. Use an amount for buying. That way the purchase doesn't go beyond your means.

A few people have mentioned downloading it and it was good quality. The torrent was released only hours after the movie was released. After watching the poor guys kids run around and play on camera and hearing about him getting screwed by mining companies I paid for two copies of the video.

If you torrent this and don't at least buy the viewing for the cost of maybe 4 sodas I hope you get leprosy and all your skin falls off.

I'd just wait for a proper scene release or dvdrip or something. Wouldnt trust a download like this as it would be a prime target for people to put malicious files in.

But there was very little reference to 1000$ jump and for the MTGox fail, probabely because time synchronization of film production..

Now, I am sharing it to my family and friends

Yesterday I downloaded from the pirate bay torrent, and the quality from the torrent was good.

Here’s my quickie layman’s review:  The documentary presents a good overview of bitcoin history... but surely seems to emphasize that bitcoin remains far from being out of the woods in its development and its path forward.. including various depictions of the sad aspects of various bitcoin business failings, such as Gox, Trading Hill and BitInstant. 

The protagonist, Dan Mross, seemed as if he was in real positive spirits in the beginning of the filming which started in mid-2012; however, as time passed, the movie seemed to show several periods in which his enthusiasm waned and turned somewhat downward towards the end (which seemed to be mostly in 2013 with a few clips in early 2014).  Part of the negative consequences with D. Mross was that he seemed to be losing good money on various BTC mining set-ups, and even referring to the fact that in mid-2012, he had sent 2,700 BTC to Aisics in order to buy some mining equipment (that was while BTC prices were well below $20).  In fact, the film did NOT really follow up with specific discussions of those difficulties which seemed to cause a bit stressed D. Mross to get involved with mining and then have various set backs and it seems that he even came to the realization that it may have been better just to buy coins and sit on them rather than to spend so much time and energy attempting to mine.  That issue was NOT really fleshed out.   

Also, there seemed to be some lingering depression, especially through the end of the film, regarding the failures of some businesses and the real tangible impacts on real living people.

I liked that the editors of the film juxtaposed scenes within, yet they largely kept the presentation in chronological order.   At the same time, it felt to me as if the title of the documentary was NOT quite correct because even though there was good news contained throughout the documentary, the end (and even the current state of bitcoin) does NOT seem like a "rise and rise" - in spite of Bitcoin prices still remaining more than 3x last year's prices.

With various BTC business failings and some questions regarding the role of governmental regulations, there seemed to have been some negative emphases and even unresolved dilemmas that were left open in the end of the film. 

I believe that the producers and editors could have improved upon the ending of the documentary by balancing some of the negative BTC developments and putting together a few of the positive BTC stories that are quite wide-spread in the current bitcoin space, including pointing out some of the great ongoing developments such as providing statistics concerning adoption, merchants, exchanges, liquidation opportunities, etc.

Overall the film was put together very well with several stimulating visuals  and fairly important and relevant discussions and in-person interviews with people who have been serving as movers and shakers in the bitcoin space.  Funny that the movie captures in time and without always knowing for sure about the actual intentions of the involved persons but realizing that these were real people with real human difficulties to survive in the BTC space, including trying to fit their real eating and sleeping needs into their BTC focused schedules.

I just watched the "Official Trailer" and it is amazing, thank you for spreading the word about The Rise and Rise of Bitcoin.

Why NOT watch the whole documentary and comment on that?

I wish they could have tried to get some coverage on BTC-e, since they are so elusive

Watched it yesterday. It was very good. Sounds like buddy has a LOT of BTC if he's been mining since like 2010, and prob should have put the movie out for free so everyone can see it. Its on thepiratebay if you want to download it.

I think the reason the movie was made available for free was because it should help spread the word about bitcoin and hopefully increase adoption in bitcoin (and the price). If he owns a lot of bitcoin (from mining in it's early days) then he will indirectly profit this way.

The dangers of downloading the torrent and then 'donating' bitcoin is that it is very difficult to determine what the 'correct' address to send the money to is. This presents an opportunity for scammers

This movie is for people who already know bitcoin, I don't think that anybody who doesn't already have some interest in bitcoin would watch a 90min documentary.

I guess once the initial money raising is done from direct selling, movie makers will release the movie themselves with their address attached to the movie.

The movie file could potentially be altered and someone could use a botnet to increase the popularity of the hash of the altered file on torrent sites. Someone could make a fake twitter account with fake followers, retewaters ect.

I was not talking about this movie specifically but rather the concept of paying after the fact in bitcoin for something after you download it. Just look at what happened with the fappening, after the first person published the pictures and a BTC address, many other people quickly published other BTC addresses trying to get people to give them money

That's a good point!!!   It seems to be a way to reassure people who are involved in bitcoin (or become involved in bitcoin) that they are involved in a laudable endeavor, with a history.

People watch documentaries on things they have no prior interest to all the time. Granted a major reason for this is because their significant other wants to watch it with them, however other potential reasons would include educational purposes or someone is just interested in documentaries in general

I just finished watching it's a good documentary but i would enjoy it more if they covered all stories till 2014.
But still it was a good watch for a newbie like me.

What do you mean by "covered all stories"?  There is a lot going on in bitcoinlandia, and to cover all stories would be a 24 hours or more documentary, no?  In other words, editors need to exercise some cutting discretion and frame their chosen topics into themes that they believe that they can adequately cover in their chosen time-allotment, which is about 90 minutes, here.

You could still pirate it by definition and send off a tip to the makers if you don't want to download it off Itunes
That way they get the full tip and no one takes a cut of the profit in addition you could use Bitcoins instead  ;)

I think movie is decently made. covers quite some important moments of bitcoin evolution from spring 2012 to spring 2014. Most people here know all or most. What surprised me most was why MtGox was actually founded :P

this documentary is not targeted towards of bitcoin users.. it's probably more targeted to people who have heard about bitcoin but don't know exactly what it does or how it works. most of us who follow bitcoins here know about 90% of what the documentary covers.

Nice docu by the way. I have to say it is a much watch for all bitcoin enthusiast.

I also watched this doc with my girlfriend. She doesn't use BTC, but she knows about it because I have used it for awhile. She liked the movie, and it actually gave her a better idea of how the whole system works. Setting it on a screen while hearing it explained is much better for visual learners than just hearing about it by word of mouth.

Its about time bitcoin, as big as it is, to have a docu about it.

Karpeles' voice did not match his face.  I hadn't heard him talk until seeing this documentary.  I was a little surprised when he opened his mouth.

in this thread when a screening of the movie was done in NY.  As the President of The Einsteinium Foundation I felt it was important to share that info with my community because all positive engagement on behalf of the cryptocurrency industry is good for the whole industry.

As I said above PICISI "will be a very powerful vehicle for introducing CC to the broader world" it will enable people to use CC at the site, it will inspire CC project developers, creators, and investors to see CC as a viable funding resource, it will enable more movies to be made, more CC movies to be made, and more CC movies that document the full breath of the CC universe from our perspective.  

The CC world view from the outside seems sinister, full of scams and dishonesty, yet from the inside we know it has those faults but it has a much larger, bigger, stronger, and deeper promise and potential.  The Bitcoin 2.0 platforms and Coinbase exchanges hint to that.  

We've got to find ways to introduce CC to the real world in ways that are familiar to them "movies", "Blimpies", "crowdfunding", so that universal adoption is not so far off or expensive.

But good question, there is still buying the DVD but I guess but after a while legitimate uses should start being encouraged.
After initial sales are done which has already occurred etc, secondary income streams start making sense in my opinion.
