Yes the guy is finally arrested.  I used to follow him. But once he started bashing Bitcoin, I just un-followed him forgot about him.

I just didn't care anymore what the clown had to say about Bitcoin.  When I heard the news of his arrest (tax evasion charge)  I just couldn't wait to share it with you all  ;D ;D

I'm definitely not totally against tax evasion(because most governments suck), but I'd probably at least be ever-so-slightly compassionate about his arrest if he didn't pump and dump coins left and right. Dude made A LOT of money taking advantage of his notoriety while dumping on a lot of newbies.

I think a lot of people are going to walk away from this arrest. His famous "I will eat my dick" won him many enemies. And his pump and dump alts more. I don't feel sorry for him.

He may be a clown but he is one of the strongest supports that crypto will ever get. He definitely have pumped and dumped various alt coins for his own benefit but he was always very vocal about the cryptocurrencies and their developmens. It's hard to find another strong supporter of cryptocurrency in recent times.

While many people won't give a shit about this news, I am actually sad because he is facing an organized attempt to silent a strong crypto support.

Imprisonment is a worthy reward for him. In 2017, when cryptocurrencies didn't have much regulation and people blindly invested in projects without much knowledge about them. There are a lot of people who have lost money because of the ICO projects that MC Afee shilling.
I think he would be fined more for tax evasion than lying to investors promoting ICO projects.

As much as I do not support tax evasion, his arrest isn't something good for the crypto community. Although most of his posts and comments on social media are against crypto and their adoption, I believe that his outbursts have actually brought about awareness for bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
He has a large follower base on his social media and even though he may not know it, he has actually done more good than harm for the crypto community by making more people aware of bitcoin. It should be noted that awareness precede adoption. Only when people care awareness can we now talk about adoption.
I do hope that he'll be released soon just to help preach the good news of bitcoin and crypto at large to the world

It is a very unfortunate time for John McAfee because he's on the SEC radar for a long time already, so far the TAX evasion case was a named reason for his arrest and maybe soon there will be another case will file against him that was a classic move, from the Government to screw John McAfee to the bottom I think its time for McAfee to spend its Million dollar income from shilling ICO projects to pay a top-caliber lawyer.

Apparently, he was arrested at Barcelona airport (El Prat) last Saturday, when he was on his way to transfer to Istanbul. A police control in the area of international flights led to his detention, once they found out that he has an Interpol search and capture order on his shoulders, pending immediate extradition to the USA.

He was taken to court, after which the magistrate proceeded to send him to jail (a prison called Brians), presumably until they extradite him (or his lawyers manage to squeeze him out somehow).

He wasn't a whale, he was just a high profile shill. And we don't know if this tax evasion is crypto related or not, and John McAfee had a lot of trouble with the law long before he became engaged in crypto, so I don't think that other shills and scammers are going to be scared now because of this arrest. If he was arrested specifically for promoting unregulated securities or something, that would be another deal.

Probably he's just going to bail out..  It is funny how rich people try to evade taxes. They have their life assured, but they don't want to pay taxes. Greed is a powerful emotion, indeed. I mean there are legal ways to postpone taxes. One shouldn't avoid paying taxes just because they think they will be utilized in amoral ways by the government.

He gets away most of his crimes, tax evasion could be noting to him when it can all be settled. The richmen in every country had been evading taxes all the time but they can get away with after getting caught. John McAfee had many accusations like hiring a hitman and raping his business partner but still got away with it.

I'm also not against him in terms of tax evasion because the government don't totally support Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies so paying tax on crypto seems ridiculous to me but we still have to do to avoid future complications. According to be search about his arrest McAfee was not only arrest for tax only cause he was also arrested by SEC for lauding several coins/ICO during the year 2017-2018 which was also the reason you saw him as an opportunist.

Dude's gone mental, really, possibly drowned from the attention he got from all sorts of media and used it in a negative way by promoting shit coins and manipulating it until profit is achieved. I couldn't care less about him not filing tax reports and evading every possible tax there is when it comes to crypto, but the unfair and scammy practice of promoting a con coin and then dumping it to his supporters and followers is really shitty, putting cryptocurrency's image on the dump.

That of lying for promoting fake projects would have been more suitable for investors who have list heavily for because of fake hype from him. I really would appreciate if these articles are being written by real people who appreciate cryptocurrencies. Every single person on our forum the least knew who the person really was.

He was arrested on the basis of a Tax Fraud, like many people he tried to use cryptocurrencies to invade taxes. Even today I saw a post on how if we buy something from bitcoins we might save on tax and such. The thing is :

1) Tax Fraud on any level is wrong
2) cryptocurrencies are highly regulated because people actually do things like these. They are not something with which you can evade tax or do something illegal
3) laws are being made stricter everyday and these kind of people really portrays us in a bad way

Lying is a skill of marketers. It's what everyone does everyday for sure in the market, so I believe he is going to be heavily fined and would be under bars for a considerable time.

Circa 2017 and 2018, McAfee created a trend that newbies thought they can rely on McAfee's tweets to get profits in minutes. In that period, some coins were pumped crazy after tweets from McAfee.

In fact, there is no free signal from any influencer and any group. If someone or any group give you such signal, they intend to get benefits from it. When you buy, you increase volume and price a litle bit or too much, it depends on how you buy and accumulate coins. The signal givers take advantage of it.

I'm not sure how violators like this will be severely punished or not, but McAfee certainly knew that something like this was being prepared for him - so it's very strange that he didn't flee to some exotic country that doesn't have extradition laws with the US. Since the man loves publicity, I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted to create as much media hype around this as possible, so in the end he might profit again.

There is no doubt that he is guilty of promoting ICO and various shitcoins, but only those with low IQ could believe him - just as some still believe he will do something on TV - and the man publicly admitted that his statement about $1 million per 1 BTC only served to attract the attention of as many naive people as possible.

You have a good point here, John McAfee has been done in the past a lot of adversitement to bitcoin and criptos, some news was good and another was bad, but at least he was talking about them. And now whit this news people will lose some trust in Bitcoin and they will think they are doing something illegal. At this point is urgent to have a global regulation to let people know what they can do and what they cant.

This guy probably did more damage to the cause of cryptocurrency than everyone else combined. The new users may not be aware of what he did in 2017 and 2018. John McAfee promoted several scam ICO projects, despite knowing that they are all fake. He received $105,000 each for every tweet he made for these projects, and received millions of USD for promoting them in other social media platforms. With his arrest, I hope that the victims of these scams may receive at least some form of compensation.

Apparently, he’d been living out in Cambrils (near Tarragona) since around March 2020, which is a seaside location packed with hotels. Amongst those, he seemingly chose to stay at the Hotel Daurada Park, a hotel that barely has registered any activity since 2017.

The hotel, belongs to a Russian bloke, but seems to have barely registered any recent activity other than Mcafee’s, who may have had ties to the hotel from some years back. In fact, the hotel was rumoured to be going to be turned into a brothel in 2018. I am one of the people that has been annoyed by this person's drama for the past few years.
I also think that people pay too much attention to his every drama and statement that it would always be raining threads on this forum.
And finally it seems like we would be free from this clown if he ever go behind the bar because of this.

None of what he is being arrested for should be actual crimes. Being able to be arrested for non-violent crimes shows the problem of the SEC as an organization.

Bitcoin's ATH price had nothing to do with John McAfee. He jumped in only after the Bitcoin prices reached sky high. And he did tarnished the reputation of Bitcoin a lot by promoting various scam ICOs. These tokens had nothing to do with Bitcoin, and yet media outlets attacked Bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general for their failure. McAfee is one of those guys who used the idea of cryptocurrency to scam others and to make a nice fortune for himself.

I'm not sure if that's entirely accurate. I don't really remember what he was up to then, but his infamous dick-eating prediction was made around July 2017, which was pre-$5k levels. I guess you could argue that Bitcoin was already in a massive upswing then, but at that point a lot of people were just waiting for the bubble to pop, so he at least didn't ride the wave at its peak.

He also absolutely had nothing to do with the all time high, but I imagine he brought quite a few people to Bitcoin -- I mean if scam ICOs are willing to pay him ~$100k for a tweet, then he probably has some influence in that area. I don't think his heel turn turned people away from Bitcoin either, so he could very well have been a net positive in the end, which is pretty funny to think about.

i wouldn't call McAfee a "bitcoin basher" the same way i never agreed with people calling him "bitcoin supporter" a couple of years ago. he is simply an attention whore who has understood the cryptocurrency community well and knows how to milk the newbies dry by scamming them.

He is only after to money and he deserve what happened to him as I saw also in the past that he is using his popularity to pump some tokens/coins and because of his action, many investors lost their money by following John MacAfee.

And now that he was being arrested for tax evasion charges then it will be good so there will be no investors that will fall to his words again.

People have a different perception of McAfee about the things he did before but one thing is sure, He is a smart opportunist that knows how to use his image to take advantage of other people. I believed that McAfee did many terrible things to the cryptocurrency community but I'm sure he has contributed some awareness to some people who don't know what bitcoin is.

On this issue, I am quite satisfied that he got what he deserves by breaking the law and his past doings that led people's lives into a disaster.

All the scammers and criminals are smart opportunist, they find a loophole in a system and try to exploit it and that is what they are doing and some really do not think about the legal implications because they think that they can get away with these activities.
 
The only awareness i got from John McAfee and Mayweather situation is not to trust anyone when it comes to investment as they would do anything for money and their vouches means nothing.

If John McAfee is found guilty of breaking the law, he should be arrested. But many people are already victims of McAfee,

There’s a legal way not to pay any taxes, John McAfee don’t know how to use these laws in favor to him and not he’s facing a biggest fight of his life or else he’ll be in jail. Tax evasion is not good because its your obligation to pay correct taxes so if you get caught, you have to face the consequences of being greedy.

Well, McAfee used to shill many scam projects in the crypto space. Whenever he did that unknowingly or not, we cannot tell with certainty. So many people lost money by investing in scam projects endorsed by McAfee. Despite his wild and crazy behavior within the crypto space, he has gathered a large number of supporters in such a short amount of time.

As far as his arrest goes, I think it's justifiable. It was his responsibility to pay taxes from his crypto income in order to comply with the law. Exchanging crypto to Fiat doesn't make you exempt from a country's taxation laws. Now he has to face fines or even jail time because of tax evasion. May this be a lesson to all of us crypto enthusiasts, to always pay our taxes when we sell crypto for cash (Fiat). As long as you're a law-abiding citizen, there should be nothing to worry about. I hope Mr. McAfee could make amends with the government in exchange for his liberty. Whatever happens in the long run, this negative event is certainly a huge blow to the entire crypto/Blockchain space. Just my opinion :)

I used to be a pretty big fan of MCAfee until I started seeing what a scumbag he was turning in to.  I guess he was truly always a scumbag, I just was letting his bad side slip past me due to appreciating the good things he did.  He was certainly getting involved with a bunch of shitcoins which tipped me off.  I have a few buddies who met with him, actually smoked a joint with him.  Apparently he was a pretty big dbag, and all about himself.

Specifically why a lot of people in the cryptocurrency industry hated him apart from his baseless claims regarding bitcoin. Dude prolly hated on bitcoin so much to ensure that his following will focus on the shitcoins he promote with the intent of leeching money to them. About two years ago I was one of the victims of John McAfee, by buying some of the ICOs he was promoting. The ICO price dumped
immediately as soon as it entered the exchanges, and there were several tokens that I couldn't sell until now. So with the loss that
I experienced, it is only natural that I am quite happy to hear about John McAfee's arrest. May he become aware of the tragedy he is

He has always been and will always continue to be a sleazeball. His name was associated with some of the worst AV software that was available until Intel bought them. His whole stunts of claiming he would eat his own phallus made crypto into a 3 ring circus. If that's the kind of publicity he brought to the table, then it's great that he'll be inside a cell enjoying somebody else's phallus.

Those old days where pumped channels are also hypes, there are lots of threads and channels that being relates to McAfee people who are riding with his popularity gained and scam lots of innocent crypto followers.

Natural reaction when you heard something that bring your loses into justice. He deserve it as he influenced a lot.

After this, we will see more from him trying to convince people again protecting his innocence, expect the unexpected.

I do not know whether he used to get money, or he used to enjoy it by tricking people. However, I am happy that he will be punished for his wrongdoings.

It doesn't surprise me, he was hiding out in Cuba all this time because he was wanted by SEC for refusing to pay his taxes, However I don't recall him seriously attempting tax evasion but I could be wrong. The guy shouldn't have made a big noise about morality of taxes when confronted about his non-payment and at the very least he should've kept his mouth shut.

Totally agree. If the government wants us to pay tax let us pay in crypto so we can see where it ends up. I'm not against tax evasion at all lol. As long as you donate or do something good with the money you probably helping much more than wasting it by paying a silly tax. I don't understand why he bashes bitcoin.      I am having mixed thoughts about his arrest to be honest. Although governments may differ in many countries but despite the corruptions happening every where, tax is vital for every country. Plus the fact that his shills on the previous years affected a lot of blind investors, just makes me feel he deserves whatever he gets. But on another note, he is still a big person in this industry which is also why I am a bit worried what happens next after this.

Yup I have seen the news as well. It’s really funny how he kept saying that Bitcoin is a bad cryptocurrency and all that, and at the end he’s the one who is even a scammer. I know he started hating on Bitcoin after he made several analysis and said that we should expect price of $500,000 which never happened, then he started bashing Bitcoin.

I guess he saw what happened in 2017 and thought that the same was going to be repeating itself and he wanted to use that opportunity to make himself richer, but unfortunately for him he was disappointed. I don’t really have his time, I have never even followed him before, just used to people talking about him on this forum.

You are not alone. Some of my friends also lost their money in 2017, after trusting this criminal. In some cases, the dumping was initiated almost immediately when the trading started for the token. None of these projects are active now, and the investors are left with some useless tokens in their wallet. And I don't believe that any of the victims are even hoping that they will get reimbursed for their losses.

I can't believe I missed this, wow, happened one week ago and I had zero clues about it...but know that I think about it it's better this way, seems like the impact this guy was usually triggering in the news is slowing dying own.

From what I read in the NYT he has five counts of 5 years maximum, I doubt he will get that much, especially considering his age and I'm pretty sure his lawyer can at any time come with a perfectly legal document claiming his client is mentally unstable, but a few months will be enough for him, I'm pretty sure he will get enough dick jokes during that time he will not be able to say this word anymore.

This man gets himself in a situation where he seems not to escape if he doesn't serve some time in prison and find some money for the damage he has done. How come he lets himself paid to say bad things about Bitcoin and look what has he got? Now he is currently in the worse situation of his life. He can hire the best lawyers and they will make sure that he avoids prison time. His age is also an excuse. McAfee earned around $23 million from promoting fake ICOs in 2017 and 2018 (according to the SEC). He can hire the best lawyers in the United States, using a fraction of that money. His victims were not that lucky. They invested their hard earned life savings in to these fake projects and they ended up completely ruined financially.

I am not aware of the amount of money John McAfee earned promoting fake ICO and if they have solid evidence then even with the best lawyers he will spend time behind bars. I hope the case against John McAfee will be a precedence against all these scam promoters and hence i hope he will get a harsh sentence and more over he was hiding from the authorities on other legal issues as well.

During the 2017-18 time, there were hundreds of scam projects which popped up in the ICO sector. A lot of us know about the biggest scams, such as Onecoin and PlusToken, but there are numerous others which were forgotten soon. Bringing these criminals to justice will take a lot of time and effort, and the cooperation from law enforcement agencies around the world.

I do not think that he is really the strongest support of cryptocurrency.  All he did was for all his own gain tricking people to invest in cryptocurrency projects that made them huge losses.  If he really is a supporter of cryptocurrency, he would have lead people to better and legit projects not raking wealth because of people's ignorance of cryptocurrency.  Most people who likes crypto now hated it because of his shilling activities.  He never supports crypto but exploit them to gain wealth.


Tax evasion is a criminal case and he was proven guilty of it.  I don't think it has something to do with cryptocurrency.

I hope that all the other bashers and liar may be arrested because they are destroying the name of the bitcoin and it is not good since it can affect the rate of mass adaption and if many of this liars is free then the mass adaption may not happen due to having a bad name. But after the mass adoption, we don't need to worry about them because they will be automatically stop telling a lie and bashing the bitcoin since they need it too. I hope that mass adaption may happen sooner than what we've expected.

This is exactly the grouse people should have with him, and not necessarily that he bashed Bitcoin. From my view, he even promoted Bitcoin more. I was one of those who got affected by his attics with the GHOST project. His media clout and influence brought ESH to an ATH because it sold out from $0.02 to well over $2 just so people wanted to get the airdropped GHOST. Sadly, soon after the airdrop the controversial McAfee acted his usual unreliability and accused the GHOST management of lack of seriousness and dumped it. Well, this is a different ball game now and in the past too. If he's found culpable in the offence he was docked for, he should be made to face the  law. No one is above the law, at least not in sane societies.

During 2017-18, John McAfee received at least $23.1 million for promoting various scam ICOs. These promotions were mostly done through his official account. He never paid any income tax on this income. And the current charge against him is related to tax evasion on the above mentioned amount. So it will be wrong to say that his arrest doesn't have anything to do with cryptocurrencies.

Whatever the case is, we cannot deny the fact that McAfee didn't take the time to abide with the law by paying his taxes. He was smart, he would've paid taxes from his ICO earnings in order to stay out of trouble. Crypto's pseudonymous nature doesn't mean that you're exempt from complying with the law. As a responsible citizen, it's your duty to comply with government regulations/laws in order to avoid facing fines or even jail time. This not only applies to crypto, but with anything that is taxable income as well. Now McAfee has to pay the consequences for what he did during his life in crypto land.

At least, he had one good thing about himself. He promoted cryptocurrency heavily, and was a avid supporter of Blockchain technology. Considering that he invented (or founded) the world-famous antivirus software company, his crypto support attracted many people in the mainstream world. But the recent news about his arrest, does more harm than good to crypto's reputation worldwide. May this be a lesson for us to never skip taxes no matter how attractive crypto's profits may be. I'd prefer to pay my crypto taxes even if my gains turned out to be less in the long run. Staying out of trouble from the government is important in order to gain freedom. I’m not really the type that likes to be happy over other people’s misfortune, but I think this guy deserves what he got. From what I have got to know, he was arrested for coin shilling. That’s the only thing he’s good at, shilling coins and then dumping them after he might have made profit. I have never followed him before on Twitter, it’s only on this forum that people are always talking about him.

At first it was all good about him, and then he was saying good about Bitcoin after the first bull run. Before I know it he started making wild analysis and saying Bitcoin will get to $500,000 and I think after the price never got to that, he turned a Bitcoin enemy. The next thing he started shilling altcoins.

Good point. McAfee used to shill scam projects in the crypto/Blockchain space. I doubt he didn't know he was sponsoring a fraud that cost many investors thousands of dollars in losses. He might've not cared about this as long as his pockets were filled with money. Considering this, I think he got what he deserved. Despite the bad things, McAfee was an avid supporter of cryptocurrency. It's odd to see someone who's a CEO or founder of a prestigious company, backing crypto/Blockchain tech. If McAfee would've done the right thing in the first place, he could've helped spread awareness of crypto in the mainstream world. As they say, "all good things come to an end". I hope that he learns a valuable lesson after facing jail time (unless he gets bailed out).

Nonetheless, it seems to me that the authorities are desperate in hunting down crypto users in the decentralized realm. McAfee's situation is not the first case of an arrest related to crypto. Others like EtherDelta's founder, and even Charlie Shrem were popular crypto figures penalized by the government. Of course, the ends don't justify the means. But I've noticed that prosecution into crypto users by the authorities is more intense than those who commit wrongdoings with Fiat. Governments may not rest (especially the US government) until most (if not all) crypto users are penalized. After all, they don't want to lose sovereignty over Fiat. Just my opinion :)

As it's said in the real world, "greed is the root of all evil". I feel sorry for what Mr. McAfee did in his "glory days". He may have been an avid supporter of crypto, but the fact that he "shilled" scam projects made him lose credibility in the industry. Now it's pay back time, as the US government charged him with tax evasion. I doubt he'll be getting out of jail that easily. May this be a lesson to us to always pay taxes from our crypto earnings as it's a civil responsibility. Using crypto does not mean that you're free or exempt from the law.  You need to comply with the law if you want to stay out of trouble from the government. As long as you cooperate with the government, nothing should go wrong.

All in all, I think this will go in the history books. John McAfee will be remembered as a prominent businessman-turned presidential candidate that lost everything by avoiding taxes on his crypto income. This will harm the reputation of crypto in the mainstream world. At least, there are avid supporters of crypto/Blockchain tech doing the right thing by complying with the law. As long as there are legitimate use cases for crypto, it'll be here to stay for a long time. Otherwise, expect a massive crackdown from mainstream governments against this emerging industry. I am a victim of John McAfee shill ICO in late year 2017 when I don't know my left from right in crypto. As an influential, I thought he mean what he is saying without knowing that he is doing so for great profit. He deserves the worst more than this, and we don't need this kind of character in crypto space for adoption.

Well, that is the ending he deserved for what he's done in the past. For me it is still not enough and I find it funny since he's been having these altcoins on him which is decentralized and he's been charged for tax evasion which just means he actually don't want to pay his taxes. I don't think dicks will be the only one he's eating inside that prison.

He should be jailed for the rest of his life. But at the same time, the investors are guilty as well. Just because McAfee was promoting these scam projects, they pumped in millions of USD in to them, without doing proper research. They also played a large role in tarnishing the reputation of the cryptocurrency. Anyway, the chances are that they will get back a portion of their capital now.
