I want to ask a question. And I need serious answer from this forum, and my question is WHY DOES A GAMBLER DON'T HAVE A SAVINGS.
In my country (Nigeria) there are many gamblers who don't have savings and it isn't help matters at all. Most of these gamblers can't afford for there families but they can afford money they will use to gamble. So why are they not having savings that they can use to help there families in time of lack. Like they said, we save money so money can save us tomorrow. But these gamblers doesn't know that.

Even if gamblers knew that most likely they will get from that fund to satisfy their gambling needs and this is the nature of a gambler,telling a gambler to save money is like to say to a prostitute to start having morals meaning it does not work like that.

If a gambler were to save money for a better tomorrow he would not be called a gambler but a wise investor,something a lot of people want to do yet very few achieve it.Gamblers gamble to make money fast and they don't think for long term.

In countries like Nigeria then it is even more emphasized as a phenomena due to this country from what I know and read being a poor one.

Gambler that do not plan and have good budget for important things will not have savings. Gambler that spend more than expecting to gambling with may not have savings. Addicts may not also have savings.

I know the situation in Nigeria, it is a nation with many unemployed youths. Some people can think they can gamble with low amount of money to win big amount of money, that happens to some Nigerians, they lose small all the time because they want to win big accumulated bet.

Not all gamblers don't have savings.  There are gamblers that do have savings, it is that they just don't tell people they do have.  Gamblers that have self-control and play only to have a fund that uses the money they afford to lose in gambling do have savings.

In most cases, the gambler who don't have savings are most likely people that are addicted to gambling.  Since they have this uncontrollable urge, they just gamble all their money away.  Worst they also have debt everywhere.

There is no day that you ask a gambler for money that would give it to you. Gambler is always break even those you see cash in his hand he would still tell you that there is no money because he is going to use it to play gamble. Not that gamblers do not have savings but there savings are for gambling. But there are some gamblers that give money to their family members and friends, all gamblers are not the same. Even though a gambler does not give money to his family people he give it to his GF, if there is no savings there how will he give to her. So not all are like that. There are some that have savings.

When you are already that addicted then dont expect that those life saving of yours wont really be touched and this is one of the results when someone is already that addicted with gambling.You would definitely be losing up your mind and wouldnt be caring about your future and those priorities on which you would really be only having in mind on how you would really be able to play.
It is really just sad that there are people who do really consider out on playing gambling without minding that much in regarding into their future plans and savings
which they might be able to felt that later on when things becomes a mess.

This is the effect of gambling. Once you get used to it, really hard to get back to your regular life. In the past there were these kind of gamblers who ruin themselves and their families. Now things have changed and most of them used to spend what they can afford to loss. At times when luck doesn't favour, they go for borrowing and things go out of control. Gambling with limits is enjoyable, and when things go out of hand it will turn to be big problem for the person as well as the family.

this doesn't just happen with gamblers but with a large portion of the population that lives (regardless of its income) paycheck to paycheck every month!
in the end this is the fault of our extremely/endless consumerist society that leads you to buy objects or services not for a utility.

because gambling can be an addiction for many people and this is not the problem of gambling itself but of people who allow themselves to be addicted. It's our human weakness.

I'll give you an example. I have a friend who is addicted to smoking and he's also a frequent drinker. I wouldn't call him an alcoholic but he's getting there. He also barely has any money, despite having a decent job. He drives the most destroyed car I've ever seen where seats are ripped to the point where he sits on bare foam, but he always has money for smokes and beer.

Not all gamblers don't have a savings.  It is possible that people you know have little income and yet they choose to gamble what little money they have left.


As I stated, most of them are in poverty, and even if they don't gamble, I am sure they won't have savings at all.  It is also taken from your context that the people who almost can't afford the basic needs of their family often times put budget on gambling which can be taken as an action where a person probably take chance to try to earn more money through gambling which we know is not the right thing.


Gamblers do know that but they decided to take chance for a profit on the little they have left since some gambling games such as the lottery if won is a life-changer.

It’s not a fully true statement,maybe you had come across 70 percentage of the gamblers.It means most of the gamblers will not hold the funds for the next trade.They will have the attitude of all in all the time.Some time they will earn huge and some times they will loss some.They also have the attitude of the partial win will be placed on the new bet.The high risk was the important character of the real gamblers.Some people the rest of 30 percentage will do the trade of analysis and keep the backup of 30 percentage all the time in their wallet.Not in Nigeria,most of the European Nations and the United States also made the empty wallet for the next wallet.Such people think the holding for the next trade is not a way of gambling.My suggestion will be hold some for the backup and to recover the loss money to gambling.

Gambler's especially those that are impoverished, gamble because they want to get out of poverty and live that lavish life. The connection between lack of savings and gambling is a stretch if you'll ask me. It's like saying why are poor people gambling?

Moreover, gambling in a poor man's eye isn't a form of entertainment, it's an avenue to get rich quick without taking the grueling path of working yourself to death for financial freedom, which I can get behind since who doesn't want a few million bucks on their bank account just because you're lucky that you guessed the right numbers yeah? But it all comes full circle. it basically warrants the fact that most marginalized gamblers will not have savings, not because they are dumbfucks who aren't financially literate enough to save money for their future, but because they would rather focus on making sure they don't starve to death, before putting up money for savings and investment.

You're generalizing and this is never a good idea.
There are a lot of people from everywhere that don't have savings without being gamblers, the same thing is the other way around, there are enough gamblers who have more savings than the average non-gambler:

It's not just limited to your country but not entirely gamblers don't have a savings. There could be a few of them that has it and won't pursue saving because they'll just spend it later for their gambling habits.
While those that has it, it's likely that they're all gone because of compulsive gambling and that's why they intend not to save anymore as they know themselves better.

Not every gambler is irresponsible as those gamblers that haven't save anything at all. There are many reasons why gamblers doesn't have or lost their money savings in their possession. One common reason for it is because of addiction, Most likely they try to gamble or spent their savings  on casino trying to recover from the original loss they have an didn't recover from it, After that they just don't think of building the saving funds again for thinking that they can easily build it again if they somehow won. Second common reason is lacking financial literature, this applies to all who don't have savings even you are not a gambler. We all should be responsible  for our future and savings can surely save our lives when dry season comes.

Most addicted gamblers don't have time for any other tho g but gambling, there can't focus on any project and make it successful this is because the gambling disorder has affected their way of reasoning.

Some time their believe f that because the money their use to get come in a small amounts at a got there don't care to know how much it will be in total accumulation if calculated over some time.

True, you wouldn't mind on other things but rather having to play gambling no matter what.You wouldn't care about savings or whatsover as long you do able to play no matter what.
People would usually just stop when they dont have money to spare or to use and this is where realization of their mistakes would come from or would start which they had just able to to avoid

other activities could really be a reason on why they do end up on a disaster.

If gamblers go to the extent of loaning money, and so using up all their savings is very easy.
So this is not hard to think about. If you are a gambler, you would want to use all the spare money that you have.
Some gamblers even go to the extent of consuming their money for basic necessities, making their families starve for hunger.
This is the reason why most of the addicted gamblers have family problems, because they are thinking first their gambling before the needs of their family.

Probably there is no stable source of income and those gamblers are hoping to get some money in gambling so they can finally have the money but the result is not good always. Having your savings and emergency fund is a must, you must not prioritize gambling if you still struggling with your finances. Many gamblers failed to have savings because they are too greedy, this has been the problem since then and its happening around the world.

The simplest and shortest answer is due to their addiction. Instead of feeding and meeting their obligations, they would rather choose the selfish route of personally satisfying their greed for their addiction in gambling. This definitely also affects ultimately their savings and emergency money, which is also the reason on why majority of gamblers are high on debt.

If you know someone who is a gambler, then now is the time to at least educate and support them in solving their addiction in this dangerous habit. Not only are they slowly destroying their lives, but they are also affecting the people around them.

Op I think you don't need to conclude that gamblers don't have savings in Nigeria maybe you should make more findings and Edith this post and point out the particular state in Nigeria you have witnessed gamblers not having savings to help their family during the time of need. Not all gamblers are addicted to gamble and not all gamblers are reckless in spending because this is the only means that get gamblers recked or broke.

Am a gambler and where I am in Nigeria I have seen so many good gamblers who have made a lot of money through gambling and are still making money because they have their businesses going and they are not irresponsible in their gambling activities, once you see some one who gambles with everything, just know that the person is an addicted gambler.

Each of us does have different level of financial capabilities on which there are ones how could sustain out their gambling activity without the need on spending up their savings but rather they are just allocating a part of their overall income.Unlike into those people who do really just rely into their day job monthly salary then spending a huge chunk of it would really be putting you into a big trouble.
Addiction is indeed the main cause because if you are that someone who does have a good control of your emotion and does have good money management then you would not risk out your savings just to play gambling.
Everything would be in control which is a must.

Particular in this region your talking about (Nigeria), a lot who resort to gambling don't have jobs, the little they get instead of saving it, hence most of the gamblers would prefer to first gamble because they think they are gonna double their money on the process, and from their they can start saving some money, which usually do not turn to be so and the process continues.

Probably this is true if your people there don't have a stable source of income or they only gamble just for their living.
That is a very common thing that will happen here, they gamble for a living and most of those gamblers have come from low-class family which is hoping that gambling someday will help them. People like this don't have stable jobs, they don't have savings at all and they don't think about possibly happen in the future.

Not all gamblers, we need not generalize, those gamblers who only chase their losses are the ones who don't have savings I gamble and still have savings, and some of my friends also have savings but still gamble.
Responsible gamblers have the allocation and they stick to it, so if you know a gambler and he has savings he is a responsible one but even if a gambler has no savings we cannot consider him a compulsive gambler.

Savings? that depends on the individual if he would  have such thing and that has nothing to do with being a gambler. You could be a teacher, an athlete, a psychologist or any profession you can imagine but having savings wpuld depend solely on your mindset. If you have observed that many gamblers do not have it, maybe you just generalized from the people you know. I am a gambler but I do have savings. Also I set limitations with the amount I can afford losing everytime I would play. And that does not include my savings. Actually, savings has nothing to do with being a gambler and vice versa. It is more of a mindset as I have mentioned above.

Those gamblers that you are talking about are addicts,they don't even mind to steal or borrow money to gamble. When you take gambling as a job instead of seeing it as fun,you start letting your emotion to control you,chasing your lost comes in and you will end up frustrated because you wouldn't have any savings,neither will you be able to take care of your responsibilities. Responsible gamblers don't get carried away with their gambling activities because after their gambling budget has been exhausted, they stop playing till when there is a new gambling budget. Self-control matters a lot.

Yes, you can save if you wanted to and allocate some amounts for gambling and there's no wrong with that.It is really just that there are people who are really just that irresponsible with their actions on which they
do forgot on what their priorities in life and would not mind as long they could able to play gambling.
Savings is impossible if you do know that you do have money to be spared or make use and you are a gambling addict then 100% you would be using those funds for you to play on which
its not something shocking scenario.
Gambling isn't bad as long you do know your priorities and budget in life because the world doesnt turn around with gambling.

They can't make savings as when they loss on gambling they tried to sell all of their properties day by day and become loser day by day. So, if they have any funds in the bank that can be withdrawn, if they have any fixed scene or deposit scheme then they also withdraw funds from there. So, when they loss they have nothing to say/consider as savings.

Why not ask some of them? Gamblers have a different point of view on their financial aspects and you can't generalize it.

I think OP is stating his personal experience in his locality and somehow thinks that all gamblers don't have savings which is an unfounded conclusion.  @OP should have taken into account that not all gamblers are compulsive gamblers, while many do gamble for fun and just allocate a certain amount of money to gambling.  Also, Nigeria is just one country of the many what more, @OP thinks that his locality represents the whole of the gambling world concluding that all gamblers don't have savings.

Seriously? That is just foolishness, or a newbie thinking gambling is profitable. If they have money, this will be an easy way to lose all because thinking gambling can be an income for savings would only be a means to lose more money into gambling. But as you said that they have no money and job, but they should always know that gambling sites have edge which they set themselves to be able to grow as a gambling company with the money lost by gamblers from gambling.

Those were addicted gamblers. They will be doing everything as long as they got money to gamble with. Mostly addicted gamblers will be sometimes losing their rationally caused by they always wanna try to gamble.

When you are talking about saving and i believe most of addicted gamblers will not have it. The problem is they will always be motivating themselves to use any money to gamble and think make so much money instantly through gambling.

If you were also asking people from another countries and im sure that there are also gamblers who are still thinking rationally by having their life savings in their safe wallet.

I think that this is a personal problem and i do believe most if people who have not life saving were being addicted.

It's not about the savings but gamblers do really have in their mind that if they want to gamble, they won't bother to spend on other things.

That's why you can see gamblers are mostly broke as even if they have savings, they will just spend it too to cover their gambling activity.

And it now leads to a financial crisis for their family and the next part is worst.

Having savings or not and asking them out about it then it would be a personal stuff so its better to leave and dont mind on asking someone about their savings because they might really scold you out.
Its not really a big deal, if they dont really have savings then its none of our business and also they do gamble on making use of their money so its non our right on how they would really be making use of it.

While many people say there are three ways to handle money: conservative, moderate and aggressive, I have a slightly different view.
For me there are three different types of people who handle their money: savers, investors and gamblers.

I've never met a person who really manages to practice more than one of these "skills" at the same time, they're things that don't mix.

Someone who is always involved in gambling has a more risky lifestyle, is always looking for "easy money" or trying to satisfy himself with the pleasures that money provides.

You cant generalize like this, just because some or maybe most gamblers you know do not have saving, it does not mean that all gamblers are the same. I have some friends who are closely the same as yours but there are also many friends of mine who are gambling but they do have great savings. In my opinion it is just about mindset and about how mature we are in this life especially in terms of financial. No one can give you the right answer unless you ask them yourself why they do so.

You can't generalize. There are many gamblers who have savings, investments and are wealthy individuals, businessmen.

They are likely problem gamblers who can't organize their minds to manage their personal finances properly. They need guidance from the health department of your country, so they will be advised by professionals like psychologists on how to revert this situation on their lives. They have to seek for help, that is the only alternative, I guess. And better that they do this before it's too late for themselves and for their families.

There are also a lot of those kinds of people here in my country. I guess they get so much fun from gambling that they somehow prioritize it over basic needs. It's basically childish to do that. It's bad. It's irresponsible.

These people in my locality who always complain about how prices have already risen so high, how they don't even use onions anymore, how the government seems to neglect its people, are the same people who pay $10 just to enter a cockpit arena.

There must be a deeper and more interesting explanation for this behavior but I guess it's basically about character.

It is not about being a gambler or not, OP.
It is rather about one is a responsible adult or an irresponsible idiot. Here in the forum you can find people who gamble within their own budget and do it in a responsible way, so they can keep savings and provide to their families.

Perhaps, even though problem gambling happens all around the world, it is more common there in Nigeria for some socioeconomic reasons which I ignore. Do not let those people to create a negative image of all gamblers around the world in your mind.

I guess your question was related to the personal question caused by when you mentioned those gamblers have no money left as reserved funds. I can even say that those people were only caring to play gambling even further with what they owned.
This level of gamblers was always related to addicted gamblers. I saw also in my region so many gamblers who didn't care about their family even some were also selling their house and everything that they own for gambling.
IMO, their addiction is the main thing that has triggered him to use even their life-saving to gamble. Im sure that they know about that but they were thinking about how to doubled or tripled their money as fast as possible and yeah gambling is the answer.

How can a gambler have savings if he continues to use his money to gamble? A gambler who actively gambles will not think about having savings but only wants to gamble more often. And when he has money, he will continue to gamble and hope to win a lot of money. But the reality is not like that because many gamblers cannot win money but instead experience defeat. And that already uses a lot of money. So he can't save and maybe he needs someone else from his family to help him save from his gambling winnings.

That's just biased, isn't it? I myself am a sample of a gambler who has savings piled up which is already separate from what I invest and what I use to enjoy various hobbies, gambling included. I think a better description would be gambling addicts? Though I reckon you'd be able to guess the answer already from those two words itself, it's because of addiction, simple as that. It doesn't even matter if they have a family or not, the fact that they got addicted is already enough of an idea that they wouldn't bother with them, let alone save funds for their family.

You've just generalized all gamblers which I don't think it's always gonna be the case. A lot of people who are not gamblers but doesn't have savings as well. This is something that doesn't need questions, coz we all know that these type of people are the irresponsible ones, who thinks only one way that disregards the financial struggles, and of course these people knew that.

Well, I think that, without being 100%, there must be a certain relationship. In the same way that you see a lot more bookmakers in poor districts than in rich districts because people who have money know that gambling is not a good way to earn it. So, many people on low incomes, with no savings, turn to gambling as a financial way out of their situation, while far fewer of the economically well off do the same, and if they do, it tends to be on a more ad hoc basis and as entertainment.

It's mean the gamblers you see in your country are addicts because they don't know how money management worked and use all of their money for gambling in order to make more money. I've seen such kind people in my country too, but since they're not my friend and didn't cause a problem to me, I don't care because it's their own choice. If it's my friend usually I've give a reminder and deep discussion, some may change, while some didn't.

Gambling acts like an addiction to alcohol in gamblers who are addicted to gambling and never think about tomorrow.  So they don't hesitate to bet their all.  And that's how they lose all their savings and many gamblers lose their wealth, property and everything in gambling. And because of this, addicted gamblers do not have savings. Again if luck is good many gamblers win a large amount then they have savings for the miner but they can't keep it for long either.  Greed drives them to gamble again and lose everything

Not because in your country or i mean most of the people that you knew who gambles does not have Savings meaning this is what happening in around the world.

for example , I also gamble an sometimes a Lot, but I have crypto savings and also fiat savings , not to mention my wallet holding ,  maybe you wanted to address are those gamblers from class d civilization with addicted behavior, you can expect nothing from those lol.

I think you have generalized and classified all gambler not to have any savings probably cause of the gamblers you meet on occasion. I think it’s a wrong notion that gamblers generally don’t have any savings. There are lots of successful people that gambles and still have some savings left for whenever it’s tight.
The advice for a gambler is still the same for someone that drinks. Drink and gamble responsibly.
I think for successful and not broke gamblers, the key is to set a limit on how much you’re willing to spend on gambling and then stick to the limit.

True and How can a gambler's savings be if they gamble beyond the limit?
There is no guarantee that a gambler will always win at gambling.  But at the same time a high desire to gain works in the mind of a gambler.  And if a loss is encountered once then a higher amount is bet the next time to recover the previous loss.  But even then if he loses gambling then he is in a bigger loss altogether.  Example if a gambler bets $50 hoping to profit $10 and loses, they bet $200 in the next bet to recover that $50 but if the server also loses, they lose $250 twice, and they lose everything in the same way and Thus they fail to make savings

your question is obvious and that is those people you have learned are those people that has no concrete plans in their future and only gambling is what they can see to be the source of their dreams.

It is possible that you find these facts based on where you live and socialize. If you are in a good socioeconomic status, then you will also find gamblers who have savings and are able to properly meet the needs of their families and even help other people too.
Gamblers who don't have any savings are common in poor families and they gamble hoping to hit the jackpot.

not only in your country but here we are also the majority of gambling addicts do not have savings even on average their families are all ruined.  It's impossible for gambling addicts to have savings, what they think about is how to quickly make a profit from gambling, which they do, even the majority of them are willing to do anything to get gambling capital ^{(robbery, selling personal items, or getting into debt)}.  so if you expect them to have savings, that will never happen.  

gamblers will not care or think about future savings, whereas he would prefer the money they have just to gamble. and sometimes the gambler doesn't think about whether he can eat or not, the most important thing is he can gamble that day. there are lots of gamblers who get sick just because they focus on gambling without thinking about whether they are eating or not.
well, from this you can imagine when gamblers are more concerned with gambling than savings which destroys their future.
but I think it's natural for gambling addicts who can't control their budget to gamble and throw away all the money they have.

so, anyone who feels himself to be a gambler who isn't too addicted, it's better to start controlling the gambling budget to be able to set aside a little money for savings if one day something more important happens and the savings can cover that problem.

That's because they only think that gambling is more important than having savings. After all, if they win playing gambling, they will have a lot of money, enough to meet their needs and that of their family. But most of them are wrong if they think like that because he and his family have to eat and fulfill other life needs so he should start thinking about having savings for his future. They must change their mindset so their lives can change for the better. But it won't be easy because it depends on how badly they gamble and how conscious they are to improve their life.

Gambling as an addiction has a lot of negative effects. Just as people who are addicted to cocaine and heroin would gladly give up their last dollar to feel high, so it is with pathological gamblers. A pathological gambler cannot keep to a budget; therefore, it is expected that they have no savings. In a country like that of the OP, where resources are low and there is a high rate of inflation, being a gambler and having savings would require stoic discipline. The main message is that everyone should gamble responsibly, and if you feel you are getting addicted, please seek help.

Why are you asking this question? Do you have gambling addicts in your social circle? Maybe friends or family members?
What kind of answer do you expect? Almost all gambling addicts have debts. It's impossible for them to save some money for their families.
The only way for them to save money is to quit gambling completely. I'm sure that most gambling addicts are aware of their problem. They just lack the self-control to change their behavior. The same thing applies to different kinds of addicts, not just the gamblers. 

It's good that you are concerned about gamblers from your country but the harsh reality is that gamblers generally have the habit to go all in.
I think that's what is happening to people at your place. Instead of saving first and then spending rest on gambling they are doing the opposite.
Spending first on gambling will eat up all the money and leave nothing for savings.
People should do the opposite and only then they will be able to save money and balance their spendings.

Yeah i feel you right, because if the gambler continues to hold his funds, he will definitely use the money to gamble more and expect more winning but that may be the opposite of the case as i have seen because I can boldly say it's  very difficult when you gamble to save as i am a victim of this.

I am not a victim of this, but I am still thinking about people that will gamble and think they can earn and save money from gambling, they may be happy today because they gamble and win and thinking they are saving. But what about tomorrow, they may lose and what would most probably happen is that they see that the money they think they are saving are all gone to gambling and also the money they have may go too to gambling. It is better not to think of gambling like that because gambling is not a means to save. It make sense that you realized this.

You should add the word because not all gamblers do not have savings, in fact, many of them have business its wrong to generalize and assume that if someone is a gambler he has nothing.

I don't think this is a fact if you have some sort of survey that will prove your opinion then post it here, it's hard to judge gamblers based on what you see alone, I don't think our Nigerian brothers are like, I like one of our Nigerian brother here to disprove this.

Gambling should not be engaged if one does not have self-control or know the rudiment of gambling and how to engage it with caution and careful plans. Gambling can ruin someone's life if care is not taken, but it's fun too and could even make one earn money consistently if approached well.

Those gamblers you referred to do not know this, and it's always late for them to realize that gambling will not make them rich. It could make a negligible fraction of people rich when luck shines on them. So, those that want to gamble should plan their life according to their income, so that they will know the amount for living, savings and gambling in order to make a balance in their lifestyle.

Those gamblers are really addicted because they choose to gamble instead of bring food in the table for their families. And just like that they are willing to put everything on the line, hoping that one day they will provide good living for their family if they won big on gambling.

But we all know that you need extreme luck to be able to pull that one. And the odds are pretty much stack against us and gamblers should know that. Unfortunately, this is gambling and there are such kind of people who don't save or who doesn't care about their future and their families future as well.

We indeed need to save for the future because the world is unpredictable. But the reason why most gamblers in Nigeria don't have savings is that their income is not even enough to meet their basic needs. an addicted one
and a gambler in control of everything

An addicted gambler mostly bet all they have and don't care about tomorrow since they think YOLO then bet everything they have to satisfy their needs to gambler then try to win some big amount because they believe that they can earn huge money on this program.

Imagine if you have savings and you're really addicted to gambling, do you really think if you lose you won't open up that savings? I think it's a given and only a few gamblers who does have savings and it doesn't necessarily on your country, there are lot of countries who does the same thing. I do gamble, but I have savings and that money will not be moved unless there's an emergency or there is a bigger necessity coming up. It won't be used for my gambling activity or any of my hobbies and habits.
For this to happen there must be firm discipline. Those who are relying on their luck in gambling by spending all their hard-earned money are not responsible gamblers. You cannot speak for all gamblers and make a general statement that clearly is an assumption. It is only the irresponsible gamblers with a problem that do not have savings. There are still some gamblers who gamble with only the money that they have allotted for gambling for that month and when it is exhausted, they do not go ahead to touch their savings. Hmmm, in my own perspective and based on other people I have conversation they believe that if they are going to save money there will be a bad luck that might happen possible that a family of them will hospitalized or get sick something like that they prefer not to save too much. But for some , they don't save because they put too much money in gambling rather than for their future.

A gambler can have savings, a gambling addict likely will not have savings. You can place the occasional bet, knowing that it is only a small proportion of your net worth and decide that win or lose it will not impact on your desire to place any more bets.  Someone that is bad with money management and has picked up gambling as one of their habits, will likely be using gambling in desperation, hoping that they will turn one dollar into a million, but the odds are so against you it is just wasting money. The fact the few persons you know as gamblers find it difficult to save isn't enough reason to generalise that all gamblers find it difficult to save. As regards gamblers helping their families i will still say it is based on discipline. Giving is a gift irrespective of how the money is gotten. Savings is the idea of holding back something for security and planning on a future day.   It also requires that security is available in order to be confident of saving.   I'd say alot of people in the world anywhere any country lack security and that planning in foresight, they spend as they get it and hope to piece things together that way.  It can work out if you are young and capable, you can spend everyday and advance in your career or prospects so that more money is always available in future then you had previously.

I don't believe that it's so peculiar to Nigeria, it's everywhere, and if one is infested with gambling addiction, then it becomes a problem. Already from a young age I have been saving money each month in a bank account. And once I started gambling I made sure that there is a clear split between my money. Adopting a responsible stance toward gambling is crucial for everyone's well-being, as it prevents financial ruin, addiction, and other problems.

Gambling is very addictive and every gambler want to satisfy himself in other to quench his or her unquenchable urge and in so doing any little fund that come their way will be channeled to gambling even though they loss, they wouldn't care because the believe in consistency and never to give up until he or she win big  which we all know that such anticipation might not come through.

If we think correctly and use a logical way of thinking, then we can find out that gambling is a slightly negative action because it can make someone lose everything when they are crazy about gambling.
Whether they are small people who only have a little money or rich people with lots of money, if they get involved and go crazy with gambling, everything they have can potentially just disappear.
Maybe they have thoughts and beliefs that they can win and can earn big money, but that kind of thinking is just a domain that will make them regret later on because winning with large amounts of money can only be owned by those who are lucky and even then only 1 appeal 1000 people who can get it.

It's normal for people who have turned gambling into an addiction. I think they can get addicted to other habits besides gambling. I mean, they're people who are prone to addiction. That's why in some countries there are limits to the ability to gamble. The most common and well-known of these is the legal age limit. That's why we can't wait for them to make sensible decisions, and that's why some countries have drawn some limits on legal gambling.

Definitely, not all gamblers have the same mindset. While others play to earn and immediately save some of their winnings, some are very reluctant to save because they think that saving will not grow their money, so might as well gamble it as there are still chances to get lucky and win bigger amount. Yet in the end, they lose all their money and got broke totally. So saving is always a choice, because you know with gambling there are no guarantees to keep on winning the whole time.

We should really be having a savings intended for emergency use cases and never ever consider it out on spending it on gambling because its never been worth on doing so.Its true that there are people who are really that minding that they would be earning more if they do decide on gambling those funds which is really very wrong.Instead of earning then they would be losing it all on most case which we do know that regret do always comes in the end. Personal savings is a must because we dont know on whats ahead and we do know that there are really that in need of huge funds.If you dont have it then where
you would really be ending up?

Normal gamblers wouldn’t risk important money in a very risky game which going to leas them into bad consequences, once you are doing that then in my opinion that person is not longer gambler but addicted and that case need to be treated before losing everything. In countries like Nigeria and even my country I’m sure every penny is important i mean even if you have enough savings and all of that surely much people outside needs it. So think wisely before gambling maybe there’s something better you can do with that money

I reckon that it's important to leave when you're aiming to save. Because as you gamble and at the same time you also want to save, these two might contradict each other.

As you crave to gamble some more and you win, there will be chances that you'll forget to save because you're in the sensation of winning and confident that everything will be good in execution.

And in that feeling, you will not save because you are thinking that the next time you gamble, you'll win again and that's the time you'll start saving and that's the cycle.

If you gamble responsibly .. you will sure have everything that everyone else's have. Such savings is the basic one in managing a healthy financial .. those who don't have and spend it all at one basket like to gamble ... they ate the one doing it irresponsibly and completely wrong.

What most gamblers do is to do it like a mad guy to gamble.

There could be certain factors why gamblers tend to not have any savings for example bad budget management and control which is common to see in a lot of gamblers. Or maybe some of those gamblers in your country don't have much to save after paying their bills so instead of saving, they put that remaining money into gambling and expect to get more out of it. I also agree with the others and there could be a good portion of addicted gamblers that can't help themselves and it's not easy for all gamblers to easily change their habits.

in today's era (not only in Nigeria but in my country and even other parts of the world), many people who don't have savings are not just gamblers but ordinary people too, that's because they don't have good financial control. gambling is not bad but losing control of yourself and finances is bad.


only a small proportion of gamblers have good financial management skills, most are very bad at it even in severe conditions, will no longer care about family affairs, and all that is on their mind is gambling. I have often heard in my country a case that tells how a gambler was caught stealing - robbing - even abusing a family just to fulfill their desires at the gambling.

The only gamblers who don't save in Nigeria are the drunkards and drug addicts, the gamble to sort out their drinks and drugs, they're still responsible persons who fend from their gambling and make big achievements.

If these people start saving their money in savings, even if it's a little and do that regularly, they will see that what they do is not in vain.
They can still gamble while trying to save money for their future so that if one day they have an urgent need, they can fulfill it immediately.
We must learn to be responsible with our money by not using it all because our life path may still be long and we need to prepare for it from now on.
Even though we are gamblers, there is nothing wrong with trying to have savings.
After all, we don't want to be gamblers forever.

The problem with gambling is that it is not a matter of simple mathematics, it involves, in some cases very much, emotions.

Someone totally rational who earns £500 a week, saves 100, puts 50 into gambling and the other 350 into other expenses is not going to have a problem. They will continue to save, and every now and then they will win from a gambling session and have some extra money.

The problem is that more than one person will gamble the £50, lose it and go on to gamble more. Or even worse: you have a big win and instead of going home with the profits, you keep playing because you think you're on a roll and end up losing everything you've won and more.

This is the answer to the question of whether it is possible to earn money by gambling. :)

They don't have any savings because gamblers lose everything. Even what is won will eventually be lost anyway. They can't help themselves to get rid of their addiction, let alone help their family and relatives.  For me, this is a serious reason to think about whether gambling is worth it, if gambling takes all the money, not allowing anything to be accumulated, and the whole life begins to spin in one cycle: earn money to lose it in gambling, earn again and lose again in the hope of compensating for losses and improving their financial situation. This is an unhealthy life.

The thing is that even if you have the strength to leave after a big win, it's not the solution, because you will be back the next day, or several days after, and what you will be doing then? I mean, knowing that you can win a big amount, will you be waiting for that, rolling and rolling, or, if not, when will you stop? And if you stop today, when will you come back?

I think the problem is more complicated, because when we say "leave the casino", we don't specify for how long: for today, for the week, for the month, or, maybe forever? I myself leave the casino right away after a big win, but only for today, and I know that I will be there next day, and will be playing with the same balance, and my win will be lost ater a month or two playing, but I don't mind because gambling for me is a good entertainment, not a way of making money.

I'm not saying, I never withdraw my winnings. Of course I do, from time to time. But I never save the money, rather, I spend it on various forms of entertainment.  Imo, if you start saving your winnings or spending them on something useful for your household, you might as well be counting on them in the future. And counting on your winnings from gambling is a dangerous thing, that's what I think.

You reminded me of the situation in the country I actually live in.In here no one can gamble under the age of 21 and even by implementing this limit most people past this age were prone to addiction,an addiction to such a high level that prompted the government to completely ban the small casinos that we had spread throughout the city and only made legal the two big ones.This somewhat solved the situation of people not going to gamble physically but this has not solved the online gambling problem,the addicted persons always find money to play online,meaning that you cannot force by law something that is in people DNA,they will find a way to go and gamble.
