Title: *INFORMATIVE* NobleCoin Founder addresses "The State of Alt Cryptocurrency."
Post by: miKnutty on April 03, 2014, 01:22:03 PM
This was posted in the NobleCoin main thread and is one of the most informative pieces of writing I've seen in a while for anyone new or experienced in the alternative crypto currency scene. A must read for everyone. NobleCoins bright future is also discussed at the end of this article.

The State of Alternative Cryptocurrency: An Introduction to the Alternative Cryptocurrency Scene, Its Inner Workings & NobleCoin Moving Forward

Download as .PDF
(http://www.noblemovement.com/downloads/TheStateofAlternativeCryptocurrency-D1.pdf)

This is a draft.

A Quote from the Founder:

Please let me state I am not good at arguing on the spot nor do I enjoy it, this is for informative purposes for those people (very) new to the cryptocurrency scene and those checking out NobleCoin. I try to stay humble but enjoy collecting information and presenting it as best I can, but I do know these are personal opinions and insights and some may not agree with them. A number may attack or criticize, I will take it into consideration but I'll simply continue to analyse and won't be snapping back. A number of us have taken an 'outsiders' look at cryptocurrency in general rather than putting NobleCoin first in an attempt to stay honest and keep a critical mind. There is also plenty of information for our community on how we want to continue moving forward. No, we're not happy with the price at all and no we don't feel like we belong here after three months of staying true to our word and working hard. We'll continue working hard (and staying true to our word).

We will get a lot of positive and negative feedback for this, but we're presenting our stance and case moving forward. All the feedback will be taken evenly and added for draft #2 (due in about 2 weeks), which we expect will reach 25,000 words. Feel free to give me a 'TLDR' :P, but there will be a lot of people who take the things we say here to heart and I think that is important.

Please feel free to share it. There are a lot of newcomers out there (more than you know and when you realise how many it's scary how many people are being completely ripped off and taken advantage of). I feel it's a disservice not giving them something that puts all the information on the table and lets them make up their own mind from there. We have a very strong policy of no names nor do we want to call out or police. We just want to provide information. Much of this is common knowledge to insiders, but we're presenting it here as a resource anyway. There may be some revelations, or there may not be. It might be me blowing hot air but a good part of me doesn't think that's the case. Either way I hope it helps everyone who reads it in some way.

With this done we'll be releasing more info. on what we're working on next as well as playing catch-up and making sure every issue raised in PMs before today is addressed.

Cheers.

Favourite quote:

"We’re constantly burning newcomers to the scene in the name of short-term profit. Every day this continues we’re destroying the chance of turning this million dollar industry into a billion (trillion?) dollar industry in the next five to ten years."

BRAVO!!!

get ready before u start reading grab a large cup of coffe and sit on the couch this is worth it

the analysis is perfect i do agree to almost everything

part 2.8 about POS is where i think we as a community must have a reflection

personnaly i think POS is the better option for one reason interest i dont like having my cash in the bank a 0% interest and as far as im concerned that what keep me looking at my HBN wallet every day.

HBN is overkill but a 5-7 % annual rate is not and it help stabilized the market and prevent dump

IMO we are trying to create a currency we have to look at the bank and see what is important to keep customer interested in their service nobody ever talk that we might need loan one day and as a noble holder i might be able to provide that service but i must have noble to do that.  the fact that i never sold my hobo its because it reward me but if i need something like an asic and they accept hobo i will use them

thats my opinion

I welcome the change and will support noble time will tell

I have a good amount of feedback that I'll try to provide in the upcoming days on this.

Overall, this was very well organized and provided nice insight. Some sections could be beefed up and some of the arguments aren't as cogent as they could be; however, there are many valid points brought up in this paper. This was a really solid read.

I found myself taking away the same things James. An extremely powerful article and even for someone who's been around the scene for maybe half a year will still gain some beneficial knowledge.

This was a good read and worth the time.
Ideas for improvements:
Add a few graphics showing average coin life, # of coins released in last year etc.
Add graphics showing the standard expected value adjustment when a coin hits a major exchange ( this has been mitigated since we have a ton of random exchanges now)
Add a small bio for each of the more vocal community members. :-)

Good luck.

This was a great read. It puts the whole crypto-community and crypto-world into perspective and was spot on. I appreciated it and know that many, many others will as well if they take the time to read it. To me, this proves more than anything that the team behind the Noblecoin Movement is second to none.

Because we were the 1st ones to read it seeing as it was released on our thread by our dev initially.

So now you read it with nothing NOBLE in your sig and you can post nice things about it as well.

The document amazed a number of my friends not involved in NOBL... Good sign!

Indeed, a great read.

Anyway, I expect very broad range of reactions .... from applause and bows, through meaningful silence, to open attacks and even fury.

A funny idea came to me now — this document should be available to the newcomers on every new ANN thread with every new coin.
As an informative guide.

Then, if the dev team removes that post... or react otherwise, the crowd would know a little bit more about that particular dev team and about possible scenarios for that particular coin.

Well worth a read (even if I am currently mining Noble).

As a reasonably new person on the Crypto scene I wish this had been available before I invested money into hardware.

I just hope enough people read this so that the scene settles down behind some solid coins with honest devs, rather than jumping from one scam coin to the next, which rarely benefits the individual miner but does allow a few individuals the chance to make a lot of money.

Hear hear. It's def worth a read, especially if it helps people new to the scene choose a worthwhile coin to support, doesn't have to be Noble, just not a scam or pump n dump.

28 pages is a little long to read.

Hopefully in this PDF, the Noblecoin guy mentions somewhere that every single Litecoin clone (ie: same hashing algo) except Litecoin itself, and Dogecoin, is going straight to 0 if he wants to be truthful, and even Dogecoin isn't that safe.

Good document overall. I spotted a couple of typos and such, but overall it was a nice job.

I have a small amount of Noble, but don't really have high hopes it'll ever amount to much. Strangely I see the Noble Marketplace doing a lot better than the coin will.

Why? Because they were there first? Who says that Doge or Litecoin won't go the same as Worldcoin?

It is all this negativity that this document is trying to stop. It doesn't help anyone, especially the altcoin arena as a whole.

We all just need to get on and accept each coins individual merits if we are going to get through this, because even Bitcoin isn't immune.

But surely a coin should be evaluated on all of its merits, rather than just technical ones?

There have been plenty of coins that whilst being a technically sound idea, e.g. quark, but without the community and new ideas they have come to nothing.

Read the document, it will make some things clear.

Edit: and yes I know that makes me sound like a preacher

Feedback both positive and negative are always nice to see, it sparks some good debates :D I think what Noble is doing differently is creating a surrounding ecosystem for the coin to be used for more than just trading on the open market for a profit or loss. You can see it with the marketplace and the growing list of merchants adopting NOBL as an individual currency. This is allowing holders to purchase products online with NOBL like you would with the USD. Once the marketplace is out of beta with full features such as allowing users to buy/sell their own items with the crypto currency of their choosing, you will see communities built between coins to benefit each other as well as NobleCoin.(12% discount when buying items with NOBL will entice users to exchange their BTC to NOBL before purchasing, ultimately driving the demand for NOBL upwards hopefully affecting the price in a positive manner)

I have to disagree with this in general. I think that there will always be a demand for a "alternatives" for various reasons. Whether it be market competition, personal appeal, or varying “utility,” I can see room for many different coins.

Even for coins that share the same algorithm, in terms of a market space, it seems that there will always be places for them. Sure we can make the argument that it purposelessly fragments the market, but market fragmentation is pretty much a given in so many different things and it seems to work just fine. (We could additionally get into issues about the perceptions of monopolization and so forth, but that can be saved for some other time.)

That said, from a security standpoint and aside from merged mining, it’s pointless to have more than one coin running the same algorithm without some sort of “exterior” defense from attacks. So serious consideration must be made in this regard.

As a side note, 28 pages is not really all that much. Hell, during university there were times I would have to read upwards of a 100+ pages a day. In my current work, myself and many of my peers have to read documents of tens of thousands of words.

I think that this quote would look very attractive on the landing page of Noblemovement, or maybe on a poster.

What Differentiates Noblecoin?
[...] what Noble is doing differently is creating a surrounding ecosystem for the coin to be used for more than just trading on the open market for a profit or loss. It's the essence of one of Noble's strong points :)

These coins have generally fallen slightly from grace due to the prevalence of scam community coins in February, a greater attention to new algorithms and technical specifications, as well as the Mt Gox and BTC dramas we saw earlier in the year causing a downward trend on prices that many are currently unable to recover from.

I've gotten this far and this needs a rewrite. I'll see what I can come up with tomorrow unless someone else would like to expound and elaborate on this.

Yes, but the whole point in Noble is that the premine is completely transparent. The wallets are public and everything that the premine gets spent on is made available to see.

Nothing that has been achieved could have been done without the premine.

I think that before you judge us, give the doc a read, it is good stuff and applies to cryto as a whole  :)

I'm not sure what you mean by "huge" but you can find all first hand info there:

(keyword: premine)

And there:

I hope this helps to clarify a bit.

is this the same noble that had a huge premine. dare i say one of the first premined coins of 2014?

If the premine was for dumping it would have been dumped when he price was over 100 don't you think?

Some people just have no cognitive thinking ability.

You mean when it was over 300 on coinmarket.io? Yeah that would have been the time.

The premine was worth $485,000 in January and the wallet balance didn't move. If that doesn't spell legitimacy from the founder of this coin then I don't know what does.

+1 does that mean your opinion is the dev should have not "stepped over dollars" and dumped at speculative price?  ???

Yes, I know my vague comments are often misinterpreted. However, in this case, I agree with the quoted sentiment. If people stopped fucking each other for $100 here and $20 there, we could all make (tens of? hundreds of?) thousands together later

And for anyone who says this noblecoin is just a clone, think about what you are saying. The clone is only relative to the technical structure of the coin. Last I checked, LTC had a pretty good structure. What people do not seem to understand is that it's not about the underlying code but the foundation that the devs and community lay that is going to decide the fate of the coin.

Irrespective whether you like noble or any other alt-coin, don't be deceived by the "clone" comment. Do just 5 minutes of logical and critical thinking and see what that coin is all about and then make your choice as to what you will get involved in.

But quite frankly, I would be behind the dev that wrote this piece, even if I was a noob to crypto coins simply because if the insight and foresight that this article brings.

I skimmed over it.. It was informative but when you really get down to it, the crypto currency scene is being ran just like the fucked up Wall Street pump and dump scene.

you have over inflated vaporware stocks that are pretty much shit and only get noticed due to the volume of automated computer trading going on and then you got the worthy stocks that no one gives a shit about because they're not allowed to go into the computer automated trading queues.

truth is when the central bankers decide to come out with their own form of crypto currency, everything that is out now will be instantly turned to shit and we will all be bag holders.

It appears the author seems to follow a lot of what ~BCX~ and his fucking minions had to say about AUR. Every fucking simpleton that followed their advice stayed out of the AUR market and it's lost subsequent value. Never mind that all the shit talk about the airdrop and the KGW exploit never did anything to it.. Nobody is interested in investing in it, mostly because it's been shit talked about for so long that now no one is even remotely interested in it.. Except for the few that want to micro pump and dump it for fun..

It's basically the same fucking mentality that I have to deal with as an Alternative Energy researcher and developer...  `Why the hell do we want to support something like that when nobody else is willing to get behind it either!!!!' God damn fucking herd mentality these days... dump! dump! dump! dump!! Same mentality is why BTC is fucking now sub $500.

I've had a small soft spot for Noble since it's launch, always had a feeling it would bring something good to the table.

This is an important document, read it.

Especially if you're a newcomer to crypto, this .pdf could save your life. (or at least some dolla' )

Funnily enough the docs rather boring and scratches merely the surface, just like some naive person who's only read the forum, maybe twitter for some extra.

The rabbit hole goes alot deeper round here, scam under scams that have never been exposed, some of the legit coins and devs are the biggest scammers.

Many enemies here are actually allies, many are one in the same.

Pumpers lol those twitter noobs are rank amateurs compared to "the channel"........maybe fontas listened in on third hand info about the channel but even he never really pumped, the group within the channel, are big enough to manipulate ltc, btc etc...and have been around long before these alts.

And as for trading most the large trans aren't done on the exchanges you guys see.

You really need to dig a tad deeper.

I'd love for you to share your insights with me privately. It's 15,000 words of the planned total of 100,000. With a policy of no names and the fact I'd rather not make too many enemies or appear to be attempting to police rather than inform the new guys (our coins been crippled enough as it is acting as we do). I understand it goes a lot deeper and there are a number of players, deals, services, groups etc. I've left out for obvious reasons. That sort of info. is not something I'd even like to hint at especially since there is very little solid evidence or even public hints of (on forums, twitter or otherwise). Draft #1 like I said - if you want to share happy to chat.

Well the little obvious penny scams and pumps offer a welcome little distraction for those planning the bigger games. Many here don't seem to realise the size of all this, and what that sort of money really attracts.

Many here think that this forum is the center of the crypto universe, its far from it.

Inherently there is so much that has already happened in the short amount of time that crypto-currencies have been around that it would take much more to even get a reasonable fraction of everything that is around this scene.

It would be nice to have an exposé to dig in the to market-manipulation that has existed since large-scale trading had started with the advent of the major exchanges in 2010-2011; but for something that focuses more on alt-currencies the fact remains that most of the action has centered around the forum, twitter, IRC and on the exchanges themselves.

Yes, the price of bitcoin has been greatly impacted by things outside of that scope, but that story should be bucketed with an in-depth analysis of the bitcoin scene.

[Heck, in the bitcoin scene, there has been well-established arbitrage, options, and derivatives practices that much of the goings on are not captured in these forums despite there being a plethora of information already in that sub-forum.]

Just a response to this, regarding the pump and dumps, you may want to include the elements of liquidity impacting the severity of a pump. Properly planned illiquidity ends ups burning both miners and early buyers on a “larger” exchange. One of the more common examples of this is how certain coins strategically limit initial liquidity and follow it up with a quick initial pump when released on a “larger” exchange. This is usually followed up with an increased release of coins (due to increased liquidity as everyone tries to get in on the initial sells), and a lot of these people end up selling it for amounts significantly lower than the first spike. This is usually when a pumper can buy back in for a much lower price. From here a second much more prolonged spike occurs in which the pumper strategically sells the remainder of the coins. In terms of market manipulation, the first wave burns the miners and the second wave burns the buyers who think they’re “getting a good deal.”

Additionally, as a follow up to major market price setting, there are also lots of back-alley deals that occur in the crypto-currency world still yet and there is a lot of buying that happens not on an exchange. However, that said, it seems that this current wave of alt-coins are mostly done via the more “normal” channels as a lot of the profiteering space has been fragmented by relative “newcomers.” A lot of the more massive manipulation has drifted back to being done with more established coins as it gets more and more difficult to do this with a new coin because of various factors (trust being one of the biggest factors). There were a few that happened with this wave, but proportionally speaking, it wasn’t as much as the waves in the middle of 2013 or during 2012.

There were a few that happened with this wave, but proportionally speaking, it wasn’t as much as the waves in the middle of 2013 or during 2012.

Well said, A prime example of this is Doge Dec-Jan. Also if you found that info for me send me a PM will ya?

Well said brother.

Another example of why Noble is the way to go... SSL but found, 24 hours later the team has an updated wallet. I'm telling you, Noblecoin is the way to go!

A very interesting read indeed. I actually look forward to many waves of currencies coming out, each one usually brings new things to the table. For example many new algorithms have popped up as a result of the many coins being released everyday.

Yeah...it's clear that the bursting of the altcoin bubble has led to more would-be devs trying to differentiate their coin by real coding work, in some cases by coding a completely new protocol from scratch. The days of easy money from clonecoins are over, at least for now. If enough real devs get in to the IPO game, they'll raise the bar and set a de facto standard that all IPOs will be expected to meet. Unfortunately, this'll have the unintended consequence of scams whose con artists use silver-tongued words that promise innovations with no intent to deliver. But as more and more scams play out, there'll be more and more red flags that'll show the "mark" of an iffy project. More and more, the scam-warners will be able to explain why a project is dubious instead of just shouting "scam!" That's what having a real database of scams and swindles lets us do.

And also, any real dev will feel more pressure to differentiate himself from the scams and crapcoins by adding real innovations and/or a solid marketing plan. Even, mirable dictu, spending a couple of weeks testnetting before bringing his great idea to the Announcements subforum.  ;)

In the post-bubble atmosphere, the IPO bar really is being raised.

Oh yeah, the real database is the way to go. The problem is "anonymity" that every dev can come back under new nickname and have "clean account". I don't really see any way to track persons and their identities....

Yeah, but even anonymous people like that have "behaviour patterns", as the cops used to say. The more experience with scams we have, the more evident those behaviour patterns will be in real time when the next scam gets rollin'.

Myself, I'm more finicky than most here: I tend to hoard the word "scam" like some people hoard their cybers  :) For someone like me, it would be good to see a breakdown between "scam," "flaky," "Utopian/unrealistic," "accident waiting to happen," "flash in the pan," "bad investment" and so on. But for now, "scam" has gotta do.

Yeah its tough sometimes to decipher a scam, but I usually look to see if they are a trusted member of the bit coin talk community, brand new accounts are big hint number one.

As a theoretical case study let’s take the recent ‘action’ by disgruntled LTC miners to attempt to hard-fork LTC to the X11 algorithm. Were it made official or even successful and LTC retained its current value then we could expect to see ASIC development to tackle X11 algorithms much sooner. What then, another hard-fork? Any algorithm that grows to sufficient value and acceptance will draw ASIC development. It’s the next stage of a coins algorithms technological, social and value evolution, unfortunately not something you can run from forever.

Rofo, I would like to argue this bolded point. I believe you have come to this conclusion without considering all the facts.

I would argue that a coin that hard forks when a ASIC is created will become ASIC safe because It takes much more time effort and capitol to create an ASIC than to hard fork. Therefore once a coin shows it has the desire and the will to morph away from an ASIC then ASIC development will stop as the ASIC developers will not reach ROI and will either quit or move to another algorithm. That is a matter of economics.

The first coin that does this will set a precedent and a model that could make ASIC a thing of the past. As LTC was supposed to be (originally cpu only) it really should be the first coin to do this. But it is obvious the Will is not there and LTC will become just another alt that in my opinion will stagnate with time into oblivion. This last statement is my opinion and lets not get sidetracked on that argument.

You can't win with Spoetnik. At first I respected his criticism and speaking out against everyone.

Then he pointed his finger at me, so I listed my personal social media details, Australian Business Number (ABN), CoinPayments feedback, public ledger, and told him he could be the first to have the second-hand dealers license scanned and copied.

He still name-drops us everywhere as an anonymous scammers coin, so I gave up.

The fact I didn't dump the coin when it was worth $100,000+ worth of liquidity didn't seem to help make my case either. *shrug*

Edit: This 'noble trend' started in the first week of January, don't blame us for the fact it's been taken to extremes and used to sucker people in with other coins.

You can't win with Spoetnik.

Exactly! If you have the stomach for it, being the house "critic" is an easy ride. No-one keeps an accurate track record of how your "criticism" panned out; anyone inclined to do so will instead ignore you. Ignoring's a lot easier than spending the time and labour necessary to compile an accurate track record.

I have to hand it to the global-warming promoters: they came up with a new trick that got around the "issue" that felled their predecessors back in the '70s-'80s. Instead of making predictions that can be verified in real time, they make predictions that can't be checked because they're so far off in the future. Predicting doom as of 2100 is a perfect loophole around the Popper criterion because such predictions are falsifiable in the abstract but impossible to check because no-one old enough to understand them here will be alive when the magic year arrives.

There's even more delight in the "critic" ecosystem. Case in point: the "Precautionary Principle." It's ostensibly common-sensical: one needs knowledge of logic to see that it's just a slicked-up version of the Slippery Slope fallacy.

Yep, it's an easy ride if you have the stomach for it. The only downside is that normal people tend to unconsciously deprecate critics vis-à-vis doers. That fact, I should disclose, is precisely why you need a certain stomach to be a "critic."

Lol at this guy. "Scammers trying to be noble" you really haven't looked into NobleCoin at all have you? NobleCoin has been one of, if not the only honest altcoin to come out since January. If this coin was a scam it would have died at the beginning of february when the premine(transparent and still visible to everyone) would have been offloaded for over $250,000. I can't even try take you seriously.

Edit: Spoetnik isn't even a critic... He's just some guy running around spewing out misinformation.

In regard to Spoetnik, I have yet to see him actually like one thing in this entire forum ... besides I think VertCoin. And of course that is a coin he holds.

I suppose in some people's minds they think if they spread fud all over the place, those coins will suffer, and people will instead then invest in something more established. It doesn't work that way of course, but I guess it's one of the few logical reasons people post like that.

And 'scam' is so overused a term in this forum that it's silly at this point. People just throw it out whenever they don't like a coin, any new coin, coins that lose them money ... well, basically anything they feel like. I don't think those who yell 'scam' repeatedly realize that intelligent reasoning would work so much better than trolling all over the place.

Or perhaps they just enjoy trolling and it doesn't matter to them.

Short answer... you won't. That's why Noblecoin is truly "better" in a calculated sense. The devs and community are real and really support each other. They are not fly by night scam artists or temporary bandwagon members. So what comes out of the Noble community is going to be quality and helpful for all the crypto-coin world.
