Not a suggestion for 'own category', but a suggestion nonetheless.

The Bitcoin Community Achievement Award of 2011 has to go to Bruce Wagner, who united the Bitcoin community, though perhaps not in the way he intended.

WOW! That was kind of whom ever did that of which, by the way, was not me. I just visited that speadsheet for the first time a couple minutes ago. I thought I would get nominated for the Get Smart Award, with most here being well aware of my detective skills. (I once offered up proof that Jacob Goldstein with NPR was Tom Williams)

One thing. I looked on there and saw someone added bitcoinconsultancy.com, intersango.com, bitcoinmedia.com, libbitcoin.org, bitgroups.org. FYI, we're the same group :) Usually we say Bitcoin Consultancy is the umbrella (although it's more accurate to call it the R&D arm).

So probably you want to make that as one entry.

Also maybe consolidate Startup and Company? Bitcoin is still young, and every company listed is also a startup.

I added buttcoin on there. They are cool.

Yes, noticed that was done! I'll make note of it. Yes, I suppose there are "older" bitcoin company's like mt.gox for example and young one's like Dialcoin.com.  Excellent addition of Buttcoin! ;D

Can you make some 'Nominated' badges for each category?

The respective nominees can put it on their sites to push the awards, get the word out, and attract votes!

To be honest I don't know why there is a "best" or "worst" forum member since that doesn't really make any sense. Are there "better" people than others? I understand "Most annoying", "biggest troll", "Least likely to succeed in real life", etc, but "best/worst"?

If this whole thing is a big troll, I suggest donors and sponsors should demand their money back.

Seriously? Something like this should be moderated by someone who knows something about the Bitcoin community, I'd think.  :P
Eligius is the 5th biggest pool, and one of the oldest.

What the shit!? Only one of the community efforts listed is even a 'community' effort. Also, the bitcoin purchases category is seriously lame. Silk road should have been in there, duh.

It's more like a "benefit to the community" not a "community effort" so to speak that was done by and company/individual.  Silk Road a bitcoin achievement? Nevermind got what you meant.  Keep in mind this isn't suppose to be a scientific poll this has some humor in it also or tried to have some! people so up-tight  :P   It was hard enough dealing with all the vandalism changes people were doing !

Amir Taaki also should be on Developers at least.
BitEgg/BitPizza for services, too.

I'll keep posting other things... maybe the next few days should be a "trial run" and the real poll begin after a reset when everything is cleared up?

Good suggestions.  Nobody else was doing this so for the first year of it there is going to be hiccup's and hopefully with people like yourself help with things  ;D  On a good note at least your winning your category!

I intentionally didn't list myself under the "forum" headings because I don't really do much on the forum. ;)

Also missing:
"Nanotube" (Developer)
Bitcoin-OTC (Service?)

Probably everyone on https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/People should be on there

Is this "voting" really serious ?

  • "Pools" category is missing BTCguild, one of top3 mining pools.
  • "Miner" category is missing poclbm (or GUIminer) - almost the first GPU miner and almost the most popular one
  • "Nefario being denied entry to the US after mentioning Bitcoins" - where did you get that info ? The article says that he was not allowed to enter USA because he had not enough cash/funds to live there or failed to prove it.

No, its not a scientific poll your welcome to come up with your own ?  And yes Nefario was denied entry because he mentioned he only had bitcoins not cash ?

People have donated rewards based on the implied assumption this would be conducted properly/fairly. If that isn't the case, please figure out how to refund them so they can donate them to someone else who can conduct a proper 2011 award contest.

I'll let them decide that. It isn't up to you or me for that matter. So far nobody has asked for a refund and no I never guaranteed an accurate poll where did I state that ?

Ok, but what's the point of making knowingly inaccurate one ?
I mean, why throw out a top3 pool and top GPU miner from the list ?

And yes Nefario was denied entry because he mentioned he only had bitcoins not cash ?
So they would allow entry if he didn't said anything about bitcoins, but just not having cash ?
Yes, you can say "USA customs don't account bitcoins as convertible currency", but you CAN'T say that wasn't allowed to enter because he mentioned bitcoins.

And who determines its accurate ? everyone has an opinion and since one thing is misplaced doesn't make the poll  in accurate. Like I said you can equally come up with a poll and put it out there nothing is stopping you?

I never threw anything out I went with the latest revision I had wrong or right I went with what I had. You had ample time to correct it or PM me to correct my contact information was everywhere.

As far as Nefario I know it sure didn't help mentioning bitcoins since that was the main point he was there and the main reason he was turned around ?  The whole reason it was an article was based on that point ?

Actually, the lastest one only had 3 and none of the people you mentioned where in there. So obviously, vandalism . I don't have time to monitor every person and what they were doing to the sheet obviously the erased it for a reason. I knew that wasn't right so I went with one that had a few more in it and still neither of what you mentioned was there.

I tried. You merely reassured me that you had it under control and not to worry about it:
This spreadsheet needs some moderation. Too many vandals.

Don't worry I got back up copies and I'm doing some moderation.

back-ups = revisions tracking that google docs has and once in awhile I saved a copy but every time I went back people have erased to many things I had to go with some something.

edit: Keep in mind its a double edge sword if "locked it down" with  who I thought should be there  someone surely would complain regardless or let everyone at least have a chance to put in who they think ( whether accurate or not)  I would be damned either way so I went with one of the lesser of two evil's and stuck with a transparent method.

Saying you're doing one thing (moderating it) while doing the opposite (not moderating it) is NOT transparent.

Leaving out the most popular pools, high profile developers, etc while including dead pools, etc, is not moderation. If you made a decision to do so, it's basically trolling. If you didn't make a decision (I think you mentioned you just took it as-is at some point), it's unmoderated.

First, I'm not going to be able to get every developer ( wasn't up to me duh its called "nominees" for a reason) and obviously not everyone put those in so of course someone is going to get left out and your going to complain about it right ? Secondly, my moderation was only the obvious ( Grant it I don't know much about pools ) I wasn't going to "research" every entry and sure as hell wasn't going to ask everyone again what is right in wrong since its all subjective anyways. Also, like I said this isn't a scientific poll even if I did include a dead poll who cares I wanted as much humor in it as possible also if that is trolling then don't vote!  ;D

I know what OP was trying to do and I truly commend them for it. Unfortunately, as could be expected  with a forum newbie trying to organize an awards ceremony based on historical data that only a veteran user would know from experience, this poll has turned out unimpressive to say the least.

Under normal circumstances I would just troll the OP, push them to correct their mistakes, and offer my assistance privately, but in this special case that the OP has refused to correct course I have decided to step up.

Feel free to continue to participate freely, but let it be known that BitTalk.TV is hosting our own awards ceremony that will be broadcast on BitTalk.TV announcing the winners. We are in no rush to hurry and for this reason we will allow a full two weeks for entries.

Since this particular award thread seems to more focused on giving away bitcoins to anyone willing to participate than actually doing a good job creating a fair contest, we will focus on rewarding individuals the proper way.

To combat cheating, add value to the votes, raise money for charity, and ensure that only serious bitcoiners are participating in the contest as contestants or voters, a microtransaction will to a specified bitcoin address will be necessary. This amount will differ slightly for those nominating themselves.

All finalists of the BitTalk.TV Best of 2011 contest in each category will:

1) be published in the BitTalk.TV magazine's January issue;
2) be broadcast in a special presentation on BitTalk.tv;
3) receive a free year subscription to the BitTalk.TV magazine (est. $30 value)
4) receive a FREE casascius coin in the mail!

The categories will be soft-listed on the official forum thread. Feel free to petition for additional categories if you believe it is appropriate.

Good luck to everyone!

Fair enough and good luck. Wait till you get the first person who nominates themselves who you don't agree with ( or better yet everyone doesn't agree with) such as say Buttcoin.org  or something what are you going to do?  My system allowed people to freely nominate as much as  freely erase who they think shouldn't be nominated and at some put "cut it off" or "last man standing" so to speak.

My poll is about as un-biased as you can get and maybe missed/inaccurate on one or two things but rather have that then being a biased based award system like yours is going to turn out to be . To be clear anyone and ample amount of time  to contacted me prior to listing it up to vote if things weren't accurate. In your poll won't allow that.   Just my 2 cents and like I said good luck! ;D

It was more about the not having money part, not the bitcoins that caused it.  Customs expects you to have money for your trip, cause if you don't they'll assume you are here to work and not allow you entrance.

true, don't know about many other countries, few that i visited didn't care much coming from US. but US is anal about these sort of things (while our borders almost wide open), they need documented assurances that you won't stay after your visa expires and that you have enough money for the trip or that someone can support you here with their financials

Awesome, thanks guys!!

We owe alot of thanks to our merchants and those who voted for us.  We have a couple hundred merchants using our service and only a small percentage of them are involved in the forum.  Most of them are too busy trying to grow their businesses, which is why they let us do all of the bitcoin processing for them.  But they are excited about bitcoin and the benefits it gives them!

I will print some "WINNER" banners and hang them in our booth at CES.  Maybe it will catch the attention of a reporter walking by, if for some reason Alison doesn't get their attention. :)
