Title: [Selling service] I'll draw cool stickfigures for bitcoins
Post by: shazow on April 13, 2011, 06:18:57 AM
I like to draw cool stickfigures, here are some examples: http://shazow.posterous.com/tag/stickfigures (http://shazow.posterous.com/tag/stickfigures)

My offer: For any number of bitcoins (let's say minimum 0.5) (See "Update 2") For a minimum of 5 BTC, I'll draw stickfigures for you. You can make requests.

Unfortunately I don't have a scanner so you'll have to settle with iPhone photos of the drawing. If you make an especially generous donation (minimum 10 BTC), I'll pull out my Wacom tablet for you and do it in GIMP or vectorize it in Inkscape. :)

I'll post each drawing here unless you request otherwise.

My Bitcoin address: 1D7FRyhu1QzvdvjePVR6geui4DNaSgrM2E

You can send some unique number of Bitcoins and just mention how much you sent with your request. Or PM me for a one-off address.

Update: If you want a digitally-inked (in GIMP with my Wacom tablet) or vectorized (in Inkscape) version, I'm happy to do that but keep in mind it's a lot more work so let's make the minimum for those requests be 10 BTC. Also please commission a draft sketch first, which I'll need to base my inking from.

Update 2: I've had a lot of fun doing this, huge thanks to everyone for participating. I fear this has taken up far more of my time than I expected, so I'm going to have to increase the minimum draft commission fee to 5 BTC (and the post-draft vectorizing remains at 10 BTC). If anyone is still interested, keep posting requests. :)

Disclaimer: I'm new to to this community and this is my first post. Please excuse me if I'm doing something wrong. Let me know and I'll fix it as soon as possible.

LOL, I thought this was a goofy idea, but that picture totally bought you some legitimacy.  If you've got a sense for visual humour, perhaps you could run a reader-funded comic on the forum here?

*lightbulb goes on*

I guess that is exactly what witcoin was invented for.  I'd gotten into so many conversations about how to use it as a gambling site, as if the content production aspect were just incidental, that it never really dawned on me that the most powerful feature it has is the "support" button.  Someone could create their own category in which to host a webcomic (or lecture series, or whatever original content) and probably do quite well for themselves financially.

Of course, if a lot of people did this, the site might need a bit of a redesign to avoid clutter...

</totally OT>

P.S.  I did the stickfigure comic in my sig.  </also kinda OT>

Ha... good thing I wasn't drinking when reading this thread.  Well done, sir, have an extra 0.5 BTC for this.  If I can come up with any good ideas I might commission something from you later.  :)

That is a hell of a lot cooler than I was expecting.
I'm impressed. Watching this now, might have to toss you a few coins later.

Actually hell. I'll pay 2btc for a couple of stick figures (happily) exchanging a bitcoin for a handful of cash representing an exchange.
It would be nice if you can make it square for an avatar and I could pay a little more if you can make it vector I suppose.
If it's too much work screw it.

Thanks! :) I've been doing stickfigures (and other simplistic stylized art) for over a decade but I'm no Randall Munroe when it comes to writing geeky humour. Best I've mastered is tweets. :P

Thanks for the compliments. :) I can definitely do that. Toss over the BTC and I'll draw up a few variations for you. If you find one you like, I'll vectorize/digitize it for you for a bit more coin (ha).

Got it. Gonna take a crack at it in the next few hours. :)

I'm in California at the moment. I appreciate the offer, but I usually avoid scanners as I have pretty demanding requirements (must work with Linux, be small/fast). I do have a Wacom tablet which works well enough, and I enjoy vectorizing too. Even when I did have a scanner, I rarely used it due to the effort required.

A stick figure mining for bitcoins and maybe a few stick figures on the same coin (to represent pooled mining) would go for far in the mining side of things.

I took some creative liberty on it. ;) Let me know if this is what you have in mind, which one you like most, and I'll vectorize it for you. It's going to take at least x3-x5 more work than a quick drawing, so I'd appreciate a proportional payment, but anything will do since this is mostly for fun. :) If anyone wants to pool in for the commission, that might be cool.

Fair enough. Maybe this is a good excuse to try funding this via witcoin. You can put in your 0.23 BTC and encourage others to join while I update with progress on the piece. :) I'll see if there's a reasonable way to set this up.

I've messed around with short 20~50 frame GIF animations back in the day, but I found it more interesting and enjoyable to express motion through still art. It has been a while though, I wouldn't be against it if you have something specific in mind.

Awesome man, I really dig it. I'm probably going to use one for my avatar right now. I'll send you enough to make the vector worth your time for sure.
I'm assuming you'll be redrawing it completely for the vector so if I wanted some slight changes that wouldn't be a problem?
When I figure out exactly what I want I'll send you a PM and btc's.

Keep up the good work, never thought I'd be so impressed with stick figures.

Wow! I thought you were just going to be some stupid kid with mediocre drawing skills that wanted easy money, but these are amazing! I'll give you 10 BTC to make a logo for my minecraft server. Try and be creative with it (From the looks of it, you won't have any problem with that,) and make it evident that it has to do with minecraft. Maybe one of your stick figures leaning against a generic dirt block like this one?
http://image.spreadshirt.com/image-server/image/composition/16966262/view/1/producttypecolor/1/type/png/width/190/height/190/dual-minecraft-dirt-block_design.png
It wouldn't have to be isometric like that, or even include that at all. Just make something in your style. Just an idea, I'm not the creative one here. :) Let me know if you would like more BTC than that.

I just updated the original post to include instructions for vectorizing or digital inking.

I added two requirements:
1. You must commission a draft sketch first and approve it.
2. Since vectorizing or digital inking is a lot more work than a quick sketch, I'm setting the minimum donation at 10 BTC for those. If you can't afford that but need it for a really special reason, we can work something out. :)

That would be great when you get a chance. Thanks!
Done, edited the post with the new one.

Great! I'll send the BTC as soon as I get home. I just started my server a couple days ago, so It's not ready for the public yet, but it's rylandland.com (couldn't think of a better name, haha.) So if you wanted to put "Ryland Land" "Rylandland" (I haven't decided whether Ryland and land should be seperated yet,) or "rylandland.com" in it, that would be fine. No general theme yet aside from just having fun, and no inside jokes yet either (I'm the only one who has been on the server.) How much for a vectorized version after?

I went through my other uploads and cleaned them up a bit. Now they look like they've been faux-scanned. :P

Here are the new versions:

Also before everyone goes along and sends exactly 10 BTC, it would make things easier if everyone sent a slightly different amount (and tell me how much you sent) so I can tell apart who paid and who hasn't without having to make a separate payment address for each of you. :)

Suggestion: Make a unique address for every customer. Anyone can have a look at your address and state he was the one who sent the e.g. 10.74 coins: http://blockexplorer.com/address/1D7FRyhu1QzvdvjePVR6geui4DNaSgrM2E

I really like what you’re doing btw. Great addition. ;D
I'm willing to do that for anyone who sends me a PM asking for a one-off address.

So far, the process is working with someone making a post on this thread saying "I'm sending 32 bitcoins for blah blah" and then magically 32 bitcoins show up in my client. It's pretty safe to assume that the first person who makes the post is the one who made the commission, and I don't imagine my services are popular enough for people to sit here and snipe other peoples' commissions. :)

But as I said, if you're worried about wanting to make a big payment, send me a PM and I'll make you a special address.

And thanks. :)

Several of you suggested that we should try group-funding an art piece via witcoin, so I started a thread in fundraising.witcoin.com:

I want to make stickfigure art for the Bitcoin community (http://fundraising.witcoin.com/p/1102/I-want-to-make-stickfigure-art-for-the-Bitcoin-community)

This was inspired from Gryph's idea earlier in this thread.

https://i.imgur.com/wEZ76l.jpg (http://fundraising.witcoin.com/p/1102/I-want-to-make-stickfigure-art-for-the-Bitcoin-community)

The goals as of now:

1. 20 BTC for a vector version in Inkscape.
2. 100 BTC for a full Bitcoin coloured poster (or t-shirt or whatever) with nice typography and all (we'll need to decide on what it should say).

The piece will be released under a Creative Commons license so that the Bitcoin community can use it and benefit from it freely. The original vector file will be provided with all the layers intact so you can adjust it to your heart's desire.

Join the fundraising here: http://fundraising.witcoin.com/p/1102/I-want-to-make-stickfigure-art-for-the-Bitcoin-community

This will go on in parallel to this thread. I want to continue taking individual requests here and making art for you guys. :)

just sent you another coin for the heck of it! Cool stuff.
Shazow I like your work.

One bitcoin sent :)

I hope you'll get to make an anime about bitcoin one day.
This is great stuff, keep it up. Coins coming.
Thank you all! <3

Would love to pay 5 BTC for a comic-article for Bitcoin Weekly.
I'd love to do that! Send over the coins and let me know what you have in mind.

Sorry, I forgot I drained my bitcoin wallet out a little while ago! :D Anyway, I'm getting paid for doing some work on someones forum soon, So I'll send you the bitcoin as soon as I can. Once I send it, I'll just send you 30 bitcoin. 10 for the sketch, and 20 for the final vector (I don't expect to dislike you're drawing. I haven't seen even one of your works I didn't like :) )
Sounds like a plan. :) Ping me when you're ready.

Already got an Intuos 6x8 (the original). The problem is that it's not worth pulling out and setting up for a couple of bitcoins. I'll do it for 10+ though. :) Either way, the results are best when I start with a paper-drawn draft.

Join the fundraising here: http://fundraising.witcoin.com/p/1102/I-want-to-make-stickfigure-art-for-the-Bitcoin-community
I'm not allowed to send money without being a member, and I can't be bothered. It's much easier if you just give a unique receive address for these kinds of things.

Fair point, I'll pass on the feedback to mizerydearia. There ought to be a public bitcoin address per fundraising post that you can send anonymous bitcoins to (and automagically get converted to witcoins).

shazow. You are really great at this!
Thanks for the compliments! :) This is something I really enjoy doing (both doodling and seeing bitcoins fly into my wallet :P), so I would love to continue. Anything I could whip up for you?

Now I have come up with an idea!

I'll pay you 2.13 BTC for a cyborg crypto-anarchist riding on an alpaca with a flag in his hand with a on it "A³"  ;D

Can you do it? If that's the case, should I pay you before or after you have drawn it?

In retrospect, I guess it doesn't really represent Ben Bernank, but the agents-from-the-matrix-as-bankers has a better vibe to it given the cypherpunk origins of bitcoin. I think I can do better if anyone wants to commission a digitally-inked or vector version of this one.

Just search Velorio Facebook and you''ll find it.

There are 5 members.  Alvaro is the lead singer and guitarist, and looks like harry potter, Ben is the bassist and looks like an animal (see the facebook pictures or Veloriomusic.com), Adrian is the percussionist (congas/timbales) and a recent college graduate with glasses, Jason is the black drummer (you could play up his "blackness"), and I am Eric, the bearded Philosophy student who plays keyboards/synthesizers, guitar and sing backups...

Also, be sure to make the VELORIO letters rather large (maybe like 2x as big as the characters)

Thanks!

I would like a drawing that is not exactly bitcoin related.  Rather, it would picture a caricature of the difference between capitalism and communism.  At least in my mind.

Both pictures would represent a circle of armed men, with a worker inside.  The worker can do anything, for instance he can mine something (not bitcoins, the idea is that he has to be a symbol of labour).

In the communist version, guns are pointed inside the circle.  Towards the worker, preventing him from escaping.  And the worker has a unhappy face  :(

In the capitalist version, guns are pointed outside the circle.  They aim at protecting the worker's product of labour.   The worker has a happy face.

No legend.  I'll add it myself.

2 BTC.

Should it include some sad people outside of the capitalist circle looking in, and some looking out? :P Say Canadian corporations affected by the differences in copyright laws between the US, or vice versa (Pandora/Hulu/etc). Or entrepreneurs who want to start a business in the US but can't do it due to immigration laws.

I'll whip up a draft in the next few days. :)

Hey Kiba, sorry for stagnating on you. I really haven't been able to come up with a good idea for that. The whole notion of one-way public encryption and private decryption is really weird to represent IRL.

It's like being able to speak a foreign language but not understand it.

Ok going to get some commissions done today. Hang tight!

This is awesome man, keep up the nice work :)
Thank you kind sir! Will do.

shazow, can you draw me some cool avatar to use at betco.in? is 2 btc ok?
Indeed I can! Any preferences/theme/requests etc? I'll do a simple draft like the others for 2btc. If you really like it, you can commission a higher quality version later. Make it 2.03 or something so I can tell your payment apart and send it over to 1D7FRyhu1QzvdvjePVR6geui4DNaSgrM2E. :)

That's a great idea! Though I suggest starting your own thread for that. It'll be easier to track who requests are directed to. Link it here when it's up! :)

Well the vague idea is some kind of cool looking poker avatar and as I'm kinda uncreative I totally trust your skills on this :). Payment of 2.03 BTC will be sent in a minute.

Shazow - 2 btc for a betco.in themed avatar?

I'm thinking a dude reveling in all the bitcoins stacked around him, or something to that effect

Alright boys and girls, here we go...

2 BTC.

I hope this is what you had in mind. This one took the most time of all requests so far due to all the amount of detail, and I decided to go with pitchforks instead of guns for a more timeless feel and I skipped the faces for consistency in style (we can toss those on if you really want). If you like it, I hope you'll consider tossing a tip my way for the extra effort. :)

I am willing to commission a comic about public key cryptography for 2.5 BTC. Explains them in as many comic strip you want.

https://i.imgur.com/JuEYDl.jpg (http://imgur.com/JuEYD)

This one was conceptually the most challenging one out of all requests so far. How on earth do you describe public key crypto in a simple stickfigure comic? Like a boss, that's how. I hope this makes as much sense to everyone else as it does to me. :P

After the other two, this one was fun and refreshing. So much so that I did three. I figured you were a Doyle Brunson kind of guy. :P Let me know if you want a vector version of any of those.

Shazow - 2 btc for a betco.in themed avatar?

You got it. Maybe I can score some kind of monopoly on all the betco.in avatars. :P Again, please make it something like 2.04 BTC so I can tell your payment apart, send it over to 1D7FRyhu1QzvdvjePVR6geui4DNaSgrM2E.

If I forgot anyone on this thread, please remind me. There's a few commissions going in private, I'm still getting to those.

I am hoping to commission a bitcoin comic for 1.66 BTC.

A bitcoin comic on the divisibility, the durability, and the fungibility of bitcoin. In other words, what make bitcoin good money?

(Feel free to start with a comic that explain one of the property of bitcoin. Be happy to pay for additional comics if needed be.)

nice work  :D. How much do you charge for vector editions of it? Can you draw me two more? Both should mainly consist of the face/head down to about the shoulders, the face with black sun glases and having a big cigar in the mouth. Both should basically be the some pic but differ in how the face looks, one neutral, with its poker face set up and one with a big grin, like this smiley: ;D. How much do you charge for this?

I have to say I am not very happy with it :(,  but I reckon you tried hard so I'll send you the two bitcoins, don't worry.  What bitcoin address should I use?

I thank you for your patronage so far, kiba, but I fear I must decline. I've been using up more of my time than I should on this fun exercise, and full comics take more time than most other requests.

I'm going to have to start being more selective about the work and pricepoints I accept now. I hope you understand. :)

As it says in the root post, vector editions of existing drafts are 10 btc. If you toss in 15 btc, I'll do all of them in vector, including the big grin dude.

Oh no! Was it the pitchforks? Lack of sadfaces? Something else? I'd love your feedback so I can improve at taking requests in the future.

Don't worry about paying. If you're not going to use it, I wouldn't feel right taking your coins. My apologies. :(

I updated the root post (http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5770.msg84864#msg84864) which affects all new requests:

Update 2: I've had a lot of fun doing this, huge thanks to everyone for participating. I fear this has taken up far more of my time than I expected, so I'm going to have to increase the minimum draft commission fee to 5 BTC (and the post-draft vectorizing remains at 10 BTC). If anyone is still interested, keep posting requests.

I really wanted guns, as it is not clear what the intent of the guys with forks is.   On the communist version, it seems that they are about to attack, where I wanted them to look like they are watching and preventing from escaping.  Also, there are too many people in the circle and it is not clear what they are doing.  They don't seem to be working, but rather camping.   Also, the perspective for the tent is wrong in the communist version.  Thanks for your effort anyway.

Thanks. I've always enjoyed drawing but it's not something I've ever considered I could make any kind of money on (except for that $5 I once made in grade 6 for doing a sketch from a Warcraft 2 manual).

Easy enough to find out.

Forum commissions: http://blockexplorer.com/address/1D7FRyhu1QzvdvjePVR6geui4DNaSgrM2E
  Received transactions: 13
  Received BTC: 29.42

Forum tips (a few random commission payments went here too): http://blockexplorer.com/address/1BZYH24gDB5KZfr3fh2LahkqbYrGppZTPS
  Received transactions: 6
  Received BTC: 19.55

Considering I did at least 12 drafts, plus a couple of digitally inked and a couple vectored. Even at 10 min per draft, 30 min per sketch/vector (very optimistic) that's at least 4 hours of contiguous work (probably closer to 7~8 hours in reality).

So, non-recurring 49 BTC for a solid day's work. Not exactly something I can make a living on just yet, but I hope you guys got more out of it than came out of your pockets. :)

49 BTC times 3.3 equal 161.70 USD divided by 8 hours come out 20.125 per hours worked. Not bad at all.

If you ever got increased demand, it is conceivable that you could make a living off of it.

Indeed, this definitely worked out better than expected. Any ideas for increasing demand?

Also, my supply of time is fixed, so increased demand will inevitably yield increased prices.

Edit: Also keep in mind, more than half of what I earned came before BTC broke 1.0. So really at least two thirds of that is simply lucky investing. ;)

Create a webcomic and stick a banner ads(Operation Fabulous or the other bitcoin advertising network I forgot) on it. Promote the hell out of it and let the ads fry some of the cost of hosting it.

Once you create a loyal fanbase, go in for the money kill.

Heck, you could even sell swags of your stick figure drawing, or even signed print.

Given that the exchange rates are pretty high right now, I'll do a draft for 2 BTC and a digitally inked version for 5 BTC on top of that.
