are you telling me you have never had a bank note in your pocket for the last 5 years?

if you have had bank notes in the last 5 years, your own reason for having it, is your own answer you request.

Because crypto is still an alien concept.
I mine and then I understand.
Since people get burned by many kind of "new" types of invesment
Most people wont spend a sec to even think about mining.
Exchanging cryptos for cash is even suicidal in most people's eyes.

Well you must belong to some developed country. In my country we use a lot lot of cash, and the problem that arise is that fake currency also gets supplied to our country which results in loss to our economy.

I am so very sorry to hear that, I hope that crypto's give you and every other underdeveloped nation an opportunity to live to your full potential!

And yes, I live in America. But to note a lot of fake cash gets into our economy as well, its called printing money at the federal reserve  :D.

Because in some (very pristine) parts of the world a smartphone still cannot receive a cell or wifi signal. I know of some people who would first forget to take their wallets with them before their smart phones. I think if you threw them out in the middle of a jungle to fend for themselves using survival skills they would die very quickly.

Exactly. I recently lost my ATM card. Called the bank and we had to got through each and every recent transaction. She told me that I stopped at Starbucks first thing in the morning, where I had lunch, which grocery store I stopped at in the afternoon, where I then got gas, etc.

I wonder if the OP even gets my point.

Americans love plastic. It's absurd even to europeans.

I use cash because I don't like having debt. Plastic is too convenient, cash forces you to think about your finances and makes it impossible to spend more than you have.

I use cash because if the power goes out (But the government remains in power) how the fack are you going to pay for anything? We have a long way to go before credit cards can be used during power outages.

I read somewhere that "The most evil secret society in the world"* wanted to change all the payment options and all money to be digital, so they could wipe the power grid and bring back slavery.

I don't mind physical assets.

paypals and credit cards introduces taxes, and not everyone is willing or able to have them(you need to have credit and identity avaliations). Even cryptos have transfer taxes

paypals and credit cards aren't easily avaliable in all globe

not everyone is into computer and stuff

not everyone trusts virtual payments

with plastic money you can't hide how much you spend from the gov

some people just can't control themselves when they have credit card, so ends up endivided and puts the guilty on the credit cards

you can't buy illegal stuff like durgs and falsified stuff with credit cards

Well, recently Poland's central bank said people use too much cash, they proposed to lower the max amount for cash transactions from 15k € to 1k €. Plus there is going to be digital currency introduced soon; the same can happen in any EU country.

Because not every shop accepts bitcoin as of yet. The same applies to machines.. for example, various machines do not accept creditcards.
Cash has traditionally been used as currency, anyone from the youngest to the oldest can use it. Im not so sure a 7 year old can open a paypal or creditcard account.  :)

Say you used one credit card for all your transactions and say you used it at Target this past holiday season. Then say that you were one of the folks whose credit card company said: "We're cancelling your current card and will send you a new one." What, exactly, would you use to pay for things until the new card arrived? That's one reason for cash.

Say you're dining out and say that the power goes out, or simply the credit card processing companies are down when you try to pay. What do you do? If you actually carry cash, you have a significantly smaller problem.

The problem with credit/debit cards is that they are entirely dependent on services being up 24/7. Bitcoin has a similar problem but with less opportunities for problems. Cash on the other hand (and I'm talking about the paper version not the 1s and 0s that banks count as 'cash') doesn't rely on anything of the sort. There are too many points in the credit card transaction process where a point failure can cause significant problems.

So, we still use cash because it can be used when credit/debit cards cannot. Assuming, of course, that the recipient knows how to count (and make change in the case of retail outlets).

Then there are those who prefer that there not be an electronic trail of all their purchases. With the Government trying to pin the 'terrorist' flag on everyone from those trying to be self-sufficient to those trying to prepare for a potential catastrophe, a lot of those folks prefer a cash purchase with no other records than their receipt and their name uninvolved and unrecorded.

On a side note, has anyone else ever realized the humor in FEMA advising everyone to prepare for X number of days in case of a natural disaster while other branches of the government say that those who do things like that sort of preparation are potential terrorists? It's almost enough to make you cry, unless you're already cynical about government in general.

Cash has a transaction cost. There are costs in counting it, safeguarding it, watching for disappearance from workers, etc. Benefits of cash include that that it doesn't bounce, no creditcard company for a consumer to dispute the charge, clears instantly.

I rarely use cash as well. Especially for "large" purchases, which is pretty much anything over $20 for me. Who would want to have to continually go to the bank for more cash, or carry around that many bills? I think most people use debit/cc for the majority of "large" purchases. Anyone pay their mortgage or rent with cash recently?

Not that bad. Use a card to minimise change, or be accurate with your payment.

If you give them 3 $100 for a $10 item, no wonder they give you change.

They also give you like 7 coins, and those together are less than an ounce...

Why would you give someone 3 $100 for a $10 item?  When you have $1 and $2 coins, any change under $5 is going to be ALL in coins.  It's plain stupid.  I carry a wallet not a purse.  I know why they do it (coins last longer than bills) but it's still really inconvenient.  And you don't think a 1 Yen coin is fucking dumb?  Seriously, give me one practical use for it other than throwing it in a fountain and making a wish.

I seen the old man on Pawn Stars do this, had like 500 pounds of pennies hidden  :D

Same with old quarters or war nickels but those are pretty tough to find these days.  I know places sell junk silver but is there anywhere to even sell pennies?

Because it has a hundreds-of-years-old system built around it. People like consistency and stability, and this system has existed in various forms for over a thousand years (beginning with China's creation of first paper money). People inside this system (bankers, investors, business, etc) benefit from it and oppose anything that wants to create a new system.

From a technical standpoint, we should be using cryptocurrencies for everything because they are superior, at least when we figure out how to make transactions instant. But we are not an entirely rational species, and the old system has a lot of people vested in its survival.

are you telling me you have never had a bank note in your pocket for the last 5 years?

if you have had bank notes in the last 5 years, your own reason for having it, is your own answer you request.

I actually haven't used cash in years now. I only use credit or debit for everything... makes keeping up with finances easier, makes transactions cleaner, and there is much less risk than carrying around money.

So what's the answer in my case? :p.

it's something in people's nature, I guess, usually we think it s safer that you have your money just here in your pocket, it s something that you can touch, and it s only yours, I know it s stupid, but anyway, we are still a little bit afraid of  that horror things like cash machine or  bank account  when we are talking about really big sum of money :-\ :(

I haven't heard of any gas stations giving discounts, although I do remember they used to. I think credit card companies finally stepped in (as they aren't allowed to charge more for CC, and charging less for cash was just a way around that rule). And people can steal your cash and spend it; it's just like hacking.

Technically it's always been against the rules; people just didn't report them. There was a place near me that accepts credit cards for car inspections (so there's the 3.9%+ fee). The thing to note about this is that inspections are $14.50 and is regulated by the state. For the place to take $14.50 on a credit card, they are losing almost 4% of the amount. They then still have to pay $14.50 back to the state, at a loss. To compensate for this, the place accepted credit cards, as long as the purchaser would pay the fee (which put the inspector at a net change of 0). Credit card companies got a hold of that and banned the entire shop from accepting them again (MC, Visa, and Discover).

You see this issue in movies all the time nowadays.  I was just watching Live Free or Die Hard and it's like people's money that is stored "electronically" you never know what can happen to it due to intentional actions or just a glitch.  Cash is something that you can have and not have to worry about it.  It cuts out the middle man too of credit card and bank fees.  So there are a lot of reasons to prefer cash.

Title: Re: Why the fuck do we still use cash?

Problem with most kinds of virtual money is a middle man, except of cryptos of course, however those are extremely tied to technology. As someone mentioned in times of crisis people will tend to prefer something that have (or can have) some real value - and of course I'm not talking about "paper" (fiat) money, but gold and silver. Personally I'm not using cryptos yet, I'm waiting for the times when the "speculation fever" will fall, and I will be able to use it without any risk. I'm thinking about crypto money as convenient (and safe) way to exchange work, not as an investment. And black market - I'm thinking about it as "white market", black market is definitely a pejorative term, while it is most natural way for people to exchange :P

Cash is good for medium sized transactions in person. If you were to go to a hot dog vendor for example cash is likely the best way to pay for your food. The payment phase of buying a hotdog is very short, only ~30 seconds, less then the time it would take to show a QR code, scan it, broadcast it and the vendor seeing it register as a 0/unconfirmed tx on the network.

Cash also provides a greater level of anonymity then BTC as it is generally not feasible to track where individual dollar bills have been in the past.

BTC is good for smaller transactions when the time between when payment is made and when the product is delivered is greater. For example when you use BTC to buy a coffee from a coffee shop it will take some time to give the customer the coffee from the time that payment is received. So the process will be: Give customer QR code to pay, customer scans QR code, and broadcasts transaction to pay for coffee, vendor prepares coffee while verifying the 0/unconfirmed has been broadcast, vendor delivers coffee to customer at their table.

BTC is also good for smaller, high margin purchases. The above coffee transaction costs the vendor very little to create the coffee so they would lose very little in a double spend attack.

This is both true and false. Most companies base their prices on their overall cost of doing business. There is more than just the cost of materials; something people often forget about. There is a lot of overhead. If that overhead isn't met, it doesn't matter what the margin was; the business is going to crash.

Nonetheless, a lower merchant fee such as the one offered by Bitcoin would help to lower the overall cost of running a business (if only marginally). I have no doubt that more merchants would use Bitcoin for this reason - the only thing stopping them is the initial cost of implementation would cost them more than they would save as they don't have enough consumers using Bitcoin to save them that much money.

Yes it was one of the simple way's of trading but also a very old one, that in my eye's is outdated.
And you say you cant scam it?
What about the Counterfeit money?
Or the banks that just shows some numbers on a screen that represent's your money but it's actually nothing.
The banks never have enough money to give everyone there money when they would withdraw at the same time.
So it's already the biggest scam in human history!

Yeah, I use localbitcoins quite a bit and I'm getting hit on both ends with buying and selling coins at a markup.

In this regard bitcoin still has long way to go.

Maybe in the future when there's a lot more volume these spreads will come down and sellers margins will thin out. But I think we're still a long way away from that happening.

Why not have cash as an alternative?  It's just about the only (non-crypto) option that offers any privacy.  Besides, sometimes it's just easier to use than anything else.  Not easy to shove USD from your credit card into an envelope to give as a gift, for example.  And good luck using your credit card if it is stolen/lost/damaged/the system is down/there's no connectivity/etc.

Because Crypto, Cards etc. are still not accepted everywhere and people feel more comfortable dealing in cash plus dealing in cash doesn't require a great deal of knowledge on how to use it, you purchase something and you pay the amount, done, which isn't same with other forms of money. One needs to have certain understanding on how to use crypto currencies or paypal or cards. which is why most people still use cash.

Well, I actually have to disagree. A pile of physical goods makes me feel secure, instead of a pile of paper. I'd rather have 1 gram of gold than 10 pounds worth of paper.

If the world was predictable, however, a pile of cash would be a good thing for normal folk. Sadly, it's not, and as such, physical things that keep their value make me feel better than a bunch of hyper-volatile paper or plastic, depending on where you're form.

Now, if the paper has value, I'd feel secure, and a pile would be comforting. But I'd switch it to some other capital investment as soon as possible.

Just my opinion. I may just be a dumb westerner.

If you live or travel to a place where most people use taxis, they pretty much hate everything except for cash.   This is because often times they have to pay a lot of fees, and also sometimes have to wait to get their money when people pay with credit cards.

BTC would be cool for taxi drivers and tipping...All the money would actually go to the drivers

Large scale foreign purchases work as well -- very cheap (with bitcoin). But obviously, any company of scale could not operate in such manner, given that most overhead costs would need to be paid in fiat.

From a merchant standpoint, cash = no fees. From a consumer standpoint, some level of anonymity with purchases. And some business still take only cash, as ancient as it sounds. My favorite Thai restaurant is cash only. :)

Depend on how "large" is the transaction. Based on market depth, and assuming the receiving merchant do not want to hold bitcoin, I think a few million bitcoin in USD will move the market 5-10%.

I think that is the distinction at hand.

Hopefully, over time this will change. As of today you are correct, but some companies are able to pay their bills in bitcoin. Take Blockchain.info for example, they pay everything in bitcoin

Easy, convenience. No matter how fast a Bitcoin transaction will get, it will never be as fast as handing someone physical paper or coins. Nor will it be as anonymous.

I don't see paper money going anywhere. There's no money trail. Merchants save on fees. Grey/money markets thrive. Buyers stay anonymous. And from a historical perspective, I just don't see it going away.

I'd like to agree but I am becoming increasingly concerned that western governments will eventually try to phase out cash in order to track every single transaction and tax it. Even if they outright ban it, there are lots of tricks they can do to make you go cashless (think EBT cards). Whose to stop them from issuing ALL government financing in an electronic-only fashion so that anyone getting disability, welfare, unemployment, etc. could only spend their money electronically? Considering half of America is on government dependence of some sort, it wouldn't be that hard for them to pull off.

We need a cash form of Cryptocurrency.

That 's hard to implement from a technical point of view i think.

For me every so far known kind of money (cash, traditional digital, crypto) has it's very own properties, advantages and disadvantages. This is why I think that all shapes of money will survive just because for all of them there are situations they are useful.

well our goverment and the higher ups  i believe they could take advantage of us more easier..
even though i am not sure about my answer! you see if everything was iconic an error could do a lot of damage! but it would be more friendly to the environment! like not cutting trees down etc..!
also they could easily cut down our salaries or take our money away with just some clicks!~(i think that's happening even now but it will be a lot more easy in the future!) .
I hope in the future we could use iconic cash like bit coin :/ as i said no more cutting trees down and so on! our only problem will be the hackers XD

Cash is king unlike the other payment systems there are no hidden fees using cash
Also you get discounts using cash in some stores especially in the wholesale area when you buy in bulk
Simply put cash has a lot of advantages

If you argue but I get reward points from my VISA for stuff
Think about it you already paid for it and its been pushed into the price of the product at the store before you go to the teller to check out

there were so many payment options, but ppl still invented bitcoin..
we all use what we find more apropriate, and you can use cash anywhere, unlike paypal,crypto..etc

idea of creating a world market that would accept crypto everywhere you go is still far ahead.

LOL, now yes i got your point. bt why do we still use cash for larger transactions?

I personally don't know many people that use Cash for "large" purposes. Cash still has some advantages over BTC atm, for example it is much easier to transact in cash when you do not have access to an internet connection.

This is a joke right?
We can't just eliminate cash
Some businesses still only accept cash and not even card, and you expect them to quickly adapt to crypto currency?

Cash will always be around, crypto currency still has a lot to prove and a long time before bigger businesses even think about adapting coins

Can't see crypto replacing cash or card anytime soon, or even becoming an alternative

Cash is elegantly low-tech It is simple to understand and does not require internet access or even electricity in order to function. Many places in this world have neither internet nor electricity, and cash is unaffected by service outages.

Bitcoin compete directly with the credit card system in place. Credit card fee is around 3% that comes with stability and services.

Can bitcoin offer the same stability and service for less than 3% fee?

Try buying casino chips to play poker with a credit card... my local establishment won't allow it.  Sure, they'll let you withdraw cash and then turn that cash into chips, but they're not allowed to convert card to chips directly.  Anyway, if I want to play poker I don't want a nice undeniable paper trail showing where I was and what I was doing.

I am glad you saying nearly impossible.  ;) I know law enforcement use "micro dot" technology to mark money, and serial numbers on bills etc.. to track "dirty" money. But as for tracking it, from mint to let's say 2 years use... yea I grant you that it's nearly impossible.

I think we will have fiat cash with us for many more years... Some people still trade in cattle in 3rd world countries, and they had "cash" for years.

Merchant adoption, would determine, how fast fiat cash would dissapear. {Imagine years from now, when people will say... "Do you remmember, when we still used cash, to pay for stuff"  ;D

Generally speaking most cash transactions are truly untraceable. It is just that you don't know which ones are not untraceable until after the fact (when an attacker uses this information against you).

I am not familiar with "micro dot" technology but I know that even using marked bills to track someone can be very difficult. If person A were to be given a marked bill they could easily give that bill to Person B who gives it to person C all the way up to person "x" and there would be little if any record/link to each of these transactions. It would be very plausible for person "x" to have a small amount of marked bills that are a small subset of all the bills in his possession and he would have no link to person A except for a legitimate business transaction with person "x-1" who would have no link to person A except for a legitimate business transaction with person "x-2" and so on.....

Best arguments so far ;)

And I don't think the future lies in the digitisation of every aspect of our lifes. I think people start to be sick of watching all day on computer displays. It's nice to actually "feel" the money instead of only mentally knowing that it exists.

I think the issue with buying casino chips with a credit card directly has to do with the issue with credit card reversals. If a gambler were to lose all of the money he took from his credit card then he could simply dispute the charge. I have also seen ATMs at casinos (I haven't used one) but it looks like they all have phones attached to them, so I would speculate that you cannot simply use your pin to takeout cash but instead need to call your bank to authorize the transaction along with answering a number of questions to verify that you are in fact you
