Just like thefts of BTC, it's hard to trace who sent you BTC, unless you have some clues in terms of who saw the address, whom you've helped recently, etc. I would personally take this in a positive manner, as you've gotten free coins, and it's far-fetched that someone's going to send $10 in a smear campaign of any sort.

I got a small payment of like 50cents from freebitco.in just after this so i thought it might be from them but i def didnt win that much. Only time ive ever givin out my address was here to 1 person.

I guess that person must have sent you coins then. That, or someone just chose a random address they saw getting inbound transactions in the blockchain and sent coins there.

After a bit more investigation i looks like the payment was from freebitco.in, has anyone else been paid more than they won?

If you send the TX information then the sender could search these forums to locate you in case it was some kind of mistake.

freebitco usually leave put their message/comment in their tx
maybe you can check your tx in blockchain, if there's some freebitco comment, it's from them ;D

Barring a forked Bitcoin chain, payment made are irreversible once they have some confirms on them.  They could ask for the coin back, but for $10 I doubt it's worth the effort if it was a mistake.  Enjoy the money or give it to a BTC charity if you want to help out.

Check your payouts in stats/personal page, there are all your tx. Maybe one of your ref rolled high number just few minutes before payout time.

Payouts in stats show the last payment was 0.0004000 so im back to being confused as to where this money came from.

Even 1 btc is too much to hope, doesnt everybody double-triple check sending address before making a payment?!
But when ure dreaming, dream big, something like 100btc that would realy put an amazing spark in anyones life :)
I recieved amounts of 0,01-0,10 btc even; not sure if those are payouts from some forgotten pools or something, but i am happy anyway, and dont even explore where it came from.

cheers

Well its been an interesting 2 days, someone gave me 0.0136 btc from 2 addresses then took it back last night along with another $2 i hade in that wallet. Im the first to admit i didnt have any protection on that wallet apart from a good password so i guess its a good cheap lesson 2 learn. If any1 gets free btc from anywhere lock down your wallet ASAP, it might b a scam and u loose the lot. If this has happened 2 anyone else let me know.

Transactions are irreversible, so it isn't possible to take back the money that they sent. If the BTC was sent, that means someone has hacked your wallet and gained access to the private key. I recommend moving your coins as soon as possible.

they stole it back? so it was never actually in a wallet you controlled. it was only in your account at their website or something. well, you know what they say about not controlling the private keys -- you don't own any coins.

Title: Re: Someone sent me 0.0136 free?

I dont know if it was in my control because i never tried to spend it i only saw the coins in my account with 9 transactions, next day 10 transactions and all coins gone. Ive already posted where the coins went to and can also post the address they came from. Not expecting 2 ever get them back just dont want it 2 happen again.
As for if i own coins or not im not saying anymore, im paranoid now, lol

You should check your address on blockchain.info to see if there is a tx to it.
You can also check your coinbase account to see if you have entered the wrong address.

In fact, we don't know if the one stealing your bitcoin is the same person sending you 0.0136 (IMO, very unlikely).
Did you download some strange files recently?

While a loss definitely hurts, be thankful it was only $2.
Use cold storage to store larger amounts.

Don't worry, they can't take it back.  However, it's also pretty weird for them to pay more than they owed you.  Perhaps your browser was lagging behind the actual sum and you won a bet you didn't realize you made or something.

As far as figuring out who sent btc to you in general.  You can start by googling the sender's address because often it's linked to their bitcointalk profile or some other web dox.

FreeBitco.in could have sent you the money as a teaser to get you back to their site again. For the cost of a nickel they could get you re-engaged on solving the captchas and staring at their ads again...these people with the websites are pretty smart!  :P

You can't unless only a single person knows that address "and even that isn't enough since it can possibly be from someone random". Anyway if the person who donated wanted you to know that person could have included a blockchain message but that didn't happen so...

It would be so expensive, 0.01 times a few hundred users or even more can cost 10BTC, even higher than their operating costs. They cannot guarantee you would go back to their site again.

It isn't possible to steal someone's wallet just by sending them a small amount. What wallet did you use? If you use brainwallet, you were most likely compromised by a weak password or you were using a shared wallet.

I believe he is using the blockchain.info wallet.

Yep thats right another thread on some idiot having his coins stolen. Long story short i had a small amount stolen from my blockchain wallet, now i didnt have any protection on this wallet other than a good password because it only had about $2 in it and its a good way 2 find out if someone is getting into my phone. So question is, i only use internet on my phone as i dont have a computer and always on the move and now ive been hacked or something whats the best way to upgrade protection on a andriod smart phone? If u need anymore info just ask.

How do people get addresses wrong?
I presume nobody ever types them out.  ;D

You have a Bitcoin address in your clipboard from a payment you made earlier, you try to copy another address but didn't press the key hard enough so when you paste it you paste the wrong address.

Always triple check addresses before sending :)

Triple check is a must lol. Sometimes I'm just in a rush. I'll have one on my keyboard, paste, and want to click send. But then I tell myself to double check that the address I pasted IS the address of the person I want to send to.

Agree that a triple checking on payment address and transaction amount is needed.
But for some people, they simply don't handle it carefully enough.

Check http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/273vi2/if_you_just_received_800_bitcoin_out_of_the_blue to see a person sending 800btc to the wrong address (which turns out to a mtgox address) in early Jun, but luckily he received his bitcoin back a month later.  :)

Be careful OP, it sounds like you'll lose more in the future unless you figure out where your compromise is.
Can anyone give me a link or tips on how to wipe my android phone, its all ive used so probably a good place to start. I need to find where im compromised, where do i start?
Go to backup&reset and click reset phone and reset everything. I wouldn't recommend you to use a phone as a storage as you may get infected easily and you may also lose it. Try using a offline computer to generate a Bitcoin address.

OP, good idea to reset the phone but how do you think you may have been compromised? Is it rooted? Did you sideload any apps or install any from outside the play store? Did the phone every go to websites you didn't ask it to? What version of android were you on? It's important to get to the bottom of these compromises because they could lead to significant losses for someone else.

Yep. This kind of thing happens all too often. People be careful when you press send!

My personal favorite:

111BTC sent as a transaction fee...  :o incredibly lucky to get it back, he was so lucky it was a known pool who got it let alone an honest one.

I doubt anyone would send you a free 30BTC, they are not suited to use BTC if they don't even double check the address. OP had his BTC stolen later on so I doubt you want this to happen to you.
