Title: Anybody here uses Shift or Xapo debit card?
Post by: vm_mpn on December 14, 2014, 12:48:46 PM
I understand Xapo had somewhat a rough start and Shift is still in Beta. But is there anybody actually uses one of these cards? What are the fees, ease of use, limitations? Found old article on Shift and I can not think of any better way to mass adoption than this, except may be some upcoming universal wallets from BFL (Yes, I know, sorry) and CryptoLabs.

I don't use any of those 2.

As for the Xapo fees, you can find them here:

Thanks for the info P... Xapo fees do not look pretty at the moment but will probably come down in time with the wider adoption and increased competition. By the way, if there is any other crypto DC you are using do share your experience if possible.

I don't use any bitcoin DC, I rather spend my bitcoins with the merchants that accept it.

There was a point when I considered getting Xapo (out of the pure curiosity), but the fee structure and the fact that the fees were higher than initially promised, put me off for now.

Xapo definitely needs to work on their PR game because not many in the ecosystem these days likely have a positive image of them. They got a lot of VC money and have seemingly not used it to make themselves occupy any significant useful space to corner the market like the likes of Coinbase or BitPay. I wonder how the vault side of their business is doing..

Agree. As far as I remember it all went downhill when they promised (or led people to believe) that there will be no fees and later introduced the fee structure that is far worse than most cc.

They should start repairing the PR by getting rid off the monthly service fees. Most will use Xapo as a back-up DC to be used once in a while, so being charged monthly, even if you didn't use it at all, will be seen as a massive rip-off.

I've been looking into Xapo. I don't think the fees are that bad, but I don't think they ship to the U.S. I would probably barely even use it, anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter.

Hi All,

For all the Debit Card that Xapo sent out they waived the fees for all users who got the card so I think they are honoring it.
They are no monthly fees or fees for swiping. You have the typical fees for spending overseas because of FX rates.

That's a great news. But if it's true why they haven't updated the fee schedule on their website?
When you google "xapo fees" you get this:

Did they waived the fees only for the first customers, who complained to be mis-leaded?

I just received my Xapo debit card and it works pretty well. It's funny to think that if I receive my wages (I can't since my employer is not in US) through https://www.bitwage.co/ to my Xapo bitcoin address I can literally be 100% functional in society with no bank account. I can even mitigate the risks of volatility with https://bitreserve.org/

My mind is kind of blown out.

I'm paying a 3% fee for currency conversion since the debit card is USD and I'm located in Canada. That's all.

Yes because I don't live in a country where they support the currency. Otherwise it's free.

Do I get this right, they only charge you a fee for CAD to USD conversion?
Are you sure there are no other fees/monthly service charge? How do they make a profit then?

Have they provided any updated fee structure?

I sent them an email asking what's going on with the card I ordered and they replied me telling me they will send me one. I received it in the mail 10 days later.

About Xapo i think the fees are not so bad also there is no monthly fees or fees for swiping, so as you can see is a good chooise, btw you have the fee conversion 3% if im not wrong, but honestly, is not so bad compare to others.

Btw im reading that ppl are having some problems on his credits cards orders, i mean they delayed a lot, let hope nobody gets probems with it...

that is FREAKING AWESOME dude so even though you are in canada, the funds in the card are in USD is this correct? If it is correct is there some reason why it is not in Canadian dollars. Again let me say how cool it is, if i may ask how long did it take you to receive the card from when you order it. If you come to the USA are you able to use the card in the USA and IF you use the card in the USA will you have to pay the 3% conversion?

No. There is no funds in the card. All the funds are in bitcoin in my Xapo wallet. The way in works is this: when I swipe the card at a POS the bitcoins are automatically and instantly deducted from my Xapo wallet and converted in USD then in local cash (supported internationally) to my card then sent to the merchant. All this in about 5 sec. I even receive a message from Xapo on my phone that I just did a transaction with the card. This is pretty slick.

If it is correct is there some reason why it is not in Canadian dollars.

They only support USD, EUR and GBP at the moment if I remember right. Probably because it is less complicated to handle that way.

Again let me say how cool it is, if i may ask how long did it take you to receive the card from when you order it.

It took a while, like 2-3 month. I sent them an email recently to know what was going on with the card and they replied back telling me that I should receive it in 10 business days (which I did) warning me that the system is still in beta and might have some bugs.

If you come to the USA are you able to use the card in the USA

Yes.

and IF you use the card in the USA will you have n?to pay the 3% conversio

I don't think so. Unfortunately, I don't think they ship the card yet to US residents because of legal complications.

This is him essentially using a "bank" (xapo) and whenever he uses his card he is essentially selling bitcoin.

I would much rather see a higher merchant adoption rate then more people using xapo

true i agree with what you are saying but this is still awsome it is a step in the right direction in my humble opinion i would say. I am sure as time passes more and more merchants will allow use of bitcoin asap it is just i am sure they affraid of having to wait for confirmations. Imagine being at walmart and having to wait for even 1 confirmations lol

Me too but I see this as a step in the right direction for consumers. Now I am willing to hold more bitcoins because they are literally more useful than fiat at this point. I can use bitcoins with my phone any time I want but if I can't, I can use the card. I can now make bitcoin a real lifestyle.

I know very little abut the subject, that's why I've started it.... To me Shift sounds more appealing from very little info I've managed to find, like possible integration with CoinBase. It appears nobody around here uses it.

Sorry D,

I know very little abut the subject, that's why I've started it.... To me Shift sounds more appealing from very little info I've managed to find, like possible integration with CoinBase. It appears nobody around here uses it.

I believe this card supports integration with CoinBase, Ripple and Dwolla accounts... At least for now. Do not quote me on this though.

There's also FAQ on the bottom of the page:

https://shiftpayments.com/card/#/faq (https://shiftpayments.com/card/#/faq)

Couple of interesting things in there. Apparently they'll charge for issuing the card but there are no tx fees.

Unfortunately this one is no good for UK:

Quote
11. Any other things I should know about using the card?

These are PIN-less cards. If prompted at a payment terminal, please choose credit (vs debit).

You cannot use it in the most popular 'chip and pin' devices, as they don't have neither chip or pin.

The Xapo debit card is the most awesome debit card in my physical wallet since I got one. I do not know any other company that provides the same service. Transactions are instant, no wait times and it takes funds from my btc wallet in realtime.

No. I was just using xapo wallet only. I have tried to order the debit card, but I didn't understand the process.

I don't really like Xapo Debit card. It seems a bad choice for me. I suggest ANX Debit card now. Their support is great and their service too.

There is 2 offers though I don't whether it is expired or not. Get A FREE ANX Premium Debit Card Now! (http://www.anxintl.com/campaigns/loadforfree) and Get a $1000USD Grand Prize from ANX (http://52afe6a974bb2.mailerlite.com/o6p8v7/449231381/q1j1/4694483907)

i seen anx card but the fees for each use do not seem good , i like no monthly fee but come on $1.25 for each transaction purchase at store is something else. Even prepaid normal visa or mastercards are not raping people like this.

i am glad you are enjoying the Xapo card sadly i am in the USA so can't have one shipped to me so it makes me mad. If i knew of a canadian mail forwading service i would put canadian address since no fees to us in the USA as funds are in USD

That would increase the fees I think.

Hi DARKANGEL6415,

I am not sure where you read that about the fees on our card. There is no POS purchase free on any of our cards.
For our ANX Premium Card, the only fee there is is when you withdraw from an ATM.

ANX looks really good - wish it was US based service though. I'm just uneasy sending my coins to HK / China, probably just paranoid.

i am really glad you on here i wont ask private question i will just put it on here. So the card from ANX from what i seen has no fees except to take out money at atms is this correct. All purchases from online stores like amazon or at local stores like walmart or gas stations will NOT have any fees correct. There is also no cost to load the card is this also correct? If all the following are correct how does ANX make money to keep going? Also are the cards a visa or master card logo. In the mean time while this is answered i am trying to find where i seen fee comparison between Xapo and ANX. Also forgot to ask does the ANX cards ship to people in the usa and how long does it take and does the card come in our personal names? Is this card also allow you to spend in real time like Xapo card where it auto sells or do we have to do the work and how do we deposit into it cash, bitcoins other alt coins?

1. It is correct, there are no fees on the ANX Premium card, except for ATM withdrawals.
2. There are no fees on any POS/Online Purchases.
3. There are no card loading fees.

8. Our card currently doesn't support the Xapo functionality to auto sell on purchase.
9. You can deposit Bitcoins onto your ANX (https://anxpro.com/?utm_source=forum_referral&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=marketing) account, and then load it onto your card. The bitcoins will be exchanged into USD and then stored on your card.

perfect thank you for answering my questions. I am a little bit concerend as to the card not having a name on it is there a reason for this. I travel alot and use hotel services and fly alot / rent cars. How will i be able to use this card to book a hotel, get a plane ticket, or rent a car if there is no name on t they can match to my ID? I open account just now and submit verification after reading this answers and got message saying they will send me a code by mail? Is this mail coming from the USA or is it from somewhere else where we have to wait long time. I also see they offer free card if account is verified by January 31st 2015 but i see it only applies to the card that holds funds in HKD that would charge me $30 to use the ATM lol. Is there any was to get the Premium card without paying high shipping fees and what is the delivery speed between registered mail and expedited mail to the USA

1. I don't think there would be any problem with that.
2. It comes from our offices in Hong Kong, but the delivery speed is very quick. It should take less than a week.
3. I would suggest to simply get the HKD card and upgrade the shipping to get the ANX Premium card. You can also just get the ANX Premium card, load 0.9BTC, and we will give you the card cost back.

perfect thank you for answering my questions.

You can also just get the ANX Premium card, load 0.9BTC, and we will give you the card cost back.
ok i will see what i can figure out cause noway i am dropping $300 0.9btc into something i have not tried out yet or see how will work for things like hotel rentals or airplane tickets.

I don't really like Xapo Debit card. It seems a bad choice for me. I suggest ANX Debit card now. Their support is great and their service too.

There is 2 offers though I don't whether it is expired or not. Get A FREE ANX Premium Debit Card Now! (http://www.anxintl.com/campaigns/loadforfree) and Get a $1000USD Grand Prize from ANX (http://52afe6a974bb2.mailerlite.com/o6p8v7/449231381/q1j1/4694483907)

i am really glad you on here i wont ask private question i will just put it on here.

4. We aren't telling you :P
5. I believe that the ANX Premium card is a Mastercard card, but I am not 100% sure.

Is there any reason why ANX will ask for verification information but not send cards out with peoples name they verify?

The verification information is to make sure that you are an actual human, and to comply with  KYC/AML laws. We cannot issue cards with names printed on them because that would be far too costly, since we would have to personalize each card. We simply order a bunch of cards from our partners, and distribute them, which is why they only have "ANX" printed on them.
What you could try is to sign the card at the back, and then provide the same signature when you are paying.

2. There are no fees on any POS/Online Purchases.
3. There are no card loading fees.
4. We aren't telling you :P
5. I believe that the ANX Premium card is a Mastercard card, but I am not 100% sure.
6. Yes, we ship our cards worldwide.
7. No, the card will only have "ANX" printed on it as its name.
The bitcoins will be exchanged into USD and then stored on your card.

ok here is where i had seen about the fees for ANX card i made this in seperate " reply " so my above post still gets answered. https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/ken-lo-ceo-anx-hong-kong-bitcoin-exchange-talks-bitcoin-debit-cards/ (https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/ken-lo-ceo-anx-hong-kong-bitcoin-exchange-talks-bitcoin-debit-cards/)
also here is the ones for xapo http://www.coindesk.com/xapo-faces-online-backlash-debit-card-fees/ (http://www.coindesk.com/xapo-faces-online-backlash-debit-card-fees/)  thanks you i dont want to put anyone on the spot light i just want clear answer. Also what kind of regulation and protection do you all have for USA, thanks for answers and happy new year  :)

That article is very old. You can find a new table with our current fees here (https://anxbtc.com/pages/#/card-compare?utm_source=forum_referral&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=marketing).
For protection, your card comes with a PIN. I'm not sure how stuff like this works in the USA, but here in Europe you have to put in your PIN on every POS purchase.
perfect thank you for answering my questions.

You can also just get the ANX Premium card, load 0.9BTC, and we will give you the card cost back.
ok i will see what i can figure out cause noway i am dropping $300 0.9btc into something i have not tried out yet or see how will work for things like hotel rentals or airplane tickets.

You can try to ask the specific company in question. As far as I know, in the US, there are prepaid debit cards which don't have a name, and you can pay for Hotels and Airplane tickets with those, so there shouldn't be a problem.
i understand what you are saying but i stay at hilton hotels and i can tell you right off bat. They need a credit or debit card that has persons name on it to work / match id. Only exception they make is on company credit cards that have business name on them. As for airlines i am sure they might have issue but never know.

Ok i will try this see if it works, maybe can offer customers option of hey if you want name printed on them you can order it but will cost money..... just saying

Hey,

I tried to get a Xapo card but wasn't able to get "validated" by their process, odd...
I'm going to try an AMX card.

I thought XAPO cards are not available for the US subscribers, not sure if that was the complaint... Unfortunately I hear very little on Coinbase / Shift debit card integration around here which I must admit I would jump on right away.

I recommend https://e-coin.io EXCEPT the site went down a few days ago for ~24 hours.

To clarify, I'm a EU resident and I'm not sure why but my Xapo account couldn't pass their checks, here's the message I received:
Quote
ACTION REQUIRED - Important Update Regarding Your Xapo Account

Dear Xapo User,

Thank you for providing the information we requested from you earlier. After completing our review, Xapo has determined that we are unable to provide our services to your account. This decision is based on multiple factors utilized in our screening process, though for security reasons we are not able to provide specific details.

Xapo will be returning your funds to you and closing your account. To assist Xapo in returning your funds to you, please click here and submit your information by Monday, February 23, 2015.

Please note that clicking on the link will direct you to a third-party website hosted by FormSite.

Regards,

Xapo Team

I asked them to delete my account but I can still log into the site, not very professional.

On the other hand I ordered a debit card from https://anxbtc.com/ without any difficulties and I should receive it next week.

I can't find a physical address on their site, where are they based?
Do you have/use one of this card?

They have a thread on Bitcointalk, here, somewhere... search for "Bitcoin debit card" in the title.

I do have and use one. Have it linked to my PayPal and use it for paying server bills with BTC :)

Here is the e-coin.io thread:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=917350.0

Bottom of first post contains some company and operator info.
Admittedly, it looks a bit dodgy at first glance, a bunch of russians who incorporated in the UK using a bank in Gibraltar, but the guys have pretty solid credentials, they are using "mychoice" as visa provider, which seems to be a legit operation.

Anyway, Ive been using their card for a while too, and so far Im quite pleased with it and their service. Im just not ready yet to trust them with large amounts, but I wouldnt trust any visa prepaid card with that after the mbank fiasco.

yeah the xapo card sadly is not offered to people in the usa, that means i can't get it till i get a address in like canada or something lol, IF shift card and coinbase team up that would be huge and good for me as i already use coinbase  ;D
