Cold storage for the biggest chunk and a mobile wallet for daily spending.

I use plenty of flash drives to store my wallet.dat files, each flash drive contains like 8 wallet files for extra safety. I use this method since Januari 2013 and it works like a charm.

I plug them in once a month to refresh my backups. It takes some effort but as we all know, better safe than sorry.

There are various ways of storing Bitcoin and you can find many (including guides and tutorials) by doing simple searches on Google or on the forum. This really depends on what you want to do with your coins. If you want to store them for a very long time then I recommend using a offline device. Just make sure that it is clean before you transfer your Bitcoins there. If you have some money to spend and want to use your coins, then I recommend getting a hardware wallet. Personally I'm storing a small amount on a device using Bitcoin Core with a good password.

blockchain.info 29.1%
cold storage 100%
litecoin 3%
purse.io 1%
Fixed.

Do not do that. Blockchain.info is a online wallet and it is susceptible to hacks. Never use such a wallet for storing a larger amount of Bitcoin! Have people learned nothing from the Inputs.io fiasco?

Here you can find information on what 'cold storage' is.  (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Cold_storage) Here is a tutorial related to i (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCn0Kze2u1Y)t (note: I haven't watched it myself as I'm unable to at the moment).

A few places is best.... cold storage, unused laptop, i also sometimes keep 2-5% on exchanges for buying into litecoin or for selling BTC on a crash.

I would use few methods together: I mainly store coins on my blockchain.info wallet (which I have exported the private key to mycelium android wallet), some on phone, some on different exchanges, and most rare, paper wallet. I use few methods together to reduce the risk of losing coins on a single source.

Since I don't have a fortune to protect, I just store it on a blockchain wallet

How much do you spend on things in a week? Keep that much in a hot wallet like blockchain.info

Everything else in cold storage like a paper wallet, Trezor or Case.

It depends on the quantity of the bitcoin you own. If you have only few bitcoin you can keep them wherever you want, even online wallet for quick transaction is fine in that case. If you are more advanced user or just being paranoid and ultra secure about your coins then hardware wallets, cold storage and paper wallets are something you should research. But don't bother unless you have more than dozen of btc imo.

i found out that having a paper wallet is quite a good cold storage method. i print them on photo paper and then seal it with plastic to make it water proof. you only need to make sure you store them in a safe place where only you have access to.

IMO, if you do a lot of transactions then, online/desktop/mobile wallet will be the better option. If you don't do much, cold storage (paper/brain) wallet will be the better option.
And i store some of my bitcoin on online wallet and some at my desktop wallet  ;D and never stored in cold wallet

For spending and some other purposes, I usually keep it in an Electrum desktop/Android wallet. For large amounts of coins, I keep it in a paper wallet generated offline via bitaddress.org. I do have some couple of bits in some online wallets, but I never did store a chunk in there because personally, I don't trust web-based wallets.

I tend to have a lot on localbitcoins.

But those go quick and I have to replenish them.

Several options you can choose from. Either you make some paper wallets and store them in a secret place or you use some cold storage, hardware wallet. The best is to safe it 2-3 times imo.

I store them in Coinbase.  I have had some pretty good luck with them and I know people don't like that, but I don't like a lot of the other options that you can use, Coinbase seems quick and easy.

How would you guys go for instance when you get paid your wages in bitcoin?

Deposit it monthly in your hot wallet and instantly move savings part to cold wallet? Or do you deposit to cold wallet? And how do you get access to those coins again easily while keeping them cold?

I'm thinking lately of how to balance a "savings" and a "spending" account as I'm always moving money around in my normal bank accounts.

Title: Re: Where do you store your bitcoins ?

I personally prefer to store my bitcoins on my pc and i am using electrum. I don't recommend storing bitcoins on your mobile as it is more likely to be stolen than your home pc. And always use more than one backups for your wallets. 8)

And what happens if someone gains access to your pc? They can run off with your wallet easily. This is not a really safe way to store your bitcoins.

Cold (savings) and hot (spending) is a good way to do it
I use Trezor for hot wallet, might also get a Case later

If you want to store long term as you should, make an address on bitaddress.org. Do it offline (look it up on youtube). Ideally, do it by booting a Live DVD of Linux on it to guarantee the OS where you create the wallet at is not compromised.
After you do this, what you'll have is a paper wallet that has never seen the internet. You can extract money from there in your money to do purchases.

If the amount of bitcoin is small store it in a software wallet, i recommend Multibit HD.

If the amount is "huge", go with cold storage!

I can advise you to store them to some hardware wallet or to the paper wallets. For the hardware wallet I can recommend you a Trezor. I warn you, I might be biased, it's what I use, but I honestly think it's the best.

You should do your research anyways on all of the methods suggested here and decide by using your common sense!

I store them in coinbase but not most of my bitcoins, it know that it is not the best idea to store in this "wallet" or this exchange but it has good feature and i don't need anything extra.
The problem with it is that when the website goes offline or in maintenance i have not access to my funds.
I think that the best way it to use paper wallet or hardware wallet such as trezor and ledger which is in my future plans to buy one of them.

For the easiet storage but safe an accessible at the same time you could use a hardware wallet such as ledger and trezor.. If you want to store long term then creating priv key offline and keeping them safe would be the most secure.

I don't understand people that are using mobile wallets, we see that how easily is vulnerable android OS.

It can be easily infected by any virus. Only if you left an smartphone offline for the whole time and just to store the bitcoins.

Storing and keeping your coins on Multibit and blockchain.info are my way of bitcoin gathering. I rarely spend from multibit, so literally it's almost offline, so I keep them as cold storage. Blockchain coins it synchronizes as lightning I prefer it's my hot wallet. Doing in two different wallet is not a problem for me.

www.Blockchain.info is amazing.  I know a guy with 1000 bitcoins that keeps it all on there and does all his business on one address and has done it for over a year.  I am not saying to do that!!  (no, i won't post the address to get my friend in trouble!)

But to keep all your money on www.blockchain.info with 2-step verification and you're fine until you get 100+ bitcoin at which point you can start to worry about other means.  I've been using for over two years and I just love the service and almost feel bad that it is free as I would happily pay to ensure the service remains.

Storing bitcoin in an offline wallet would be a greater idea regardless of which type of wallet you are using. Because any wallet can be used as cold storage wallet. Use block explorer as your wallet watch. If you are a bitcoin spend, get a password secured wallet with low amount of bitcoin.

That happened to me several times already that I forgot my phone in my house. It's troublesome because I have to call my wife and look for my phone and check the messages for any code sent by the wallet provider. I'm OK with it.

I too use online XAPO wallet and blockchain wallets. I don't keep all coins at one place.

I have one question on desktop wallet. In case you need to reformat your PC due to some attack or some other reason but you don't have option to transfer coins from your desktop pc wallet before formatting. Then can we still recover our coins from wallet after the PC reformat done?

Thanks.

I currently have mine in cold storage using a paper wallet and with another smaller portion on an old laptop which is not connected to the internet. The beauty of bitcoin is that you can find creative ways to hide away the private keys so long as nobody gets to see it. Some innovative ways like having these stamped onto a metal plate or even use some clever secret code encryption that you develop your own. The options are limitless.

About 99% is stored in a cold wallet. The remaining 1% are stored at an major exchange for day 2 day use.
After Mt gox I wouldn't recommend storing any major amount at an exchange.

50% of my coins are in my mobile wallet so that I can use them whenever I need. About 30% in coinbase and 20% in cold wallet- I am using paper wallets and store them in fire proof safety box.

I don't understand people that are using mobile wallets, we see that how easily is vulnerable android OS.

It can be easily infected by any virus. Only if you left an smartphone offline for the whole time and just to store the bitcoins.

Hmmm... As I don't have much, I am not too worry. By the way I am using CoinPocket in Apple IOS and everything is working well for nearly 2 years with 24/7 internet connection. The private key is in BIP38 and back up is easy.

Currently i don't own any iOS device, i would like you buy one with my bitcoins if any is selling lol, but as far as i know there are less viruses and malware in iOS market (Appstore, itunes).
The target of the hackers is always first in Android devices as they are easy to manipulate and can be easily be listed in Google Play Store. About the backups that's the only and the best idea until you dont backup a corrupted one. I don't use any only-mobile wallet but just the coinbase client for android and it is good enough at least for me.

The most important lesson is to never store all or a high % of your coins in one method or one place, that way if something goes wrong you don't lose everything.

Personally I have most of my coins in cold storage, split between various paper wallets of which I obviously have more than one copy of each. I have coins stored on a Trezor, I have some coins on Core & a small amount for every say spending in a hot wallet.

Diversify your coins. I never hold all my coins at the same spot. I use Bitcoin Core for the big stash, 3-4 backup wallets in different places, local exchanges for trading. Some in Btc-e and some in Multibit. Some others in my laptop.

If you have under 5 coins, just store them on blockchain. If you have other that, look into cold storage and other secure safes.

Majority of coins I store on a paper wallet and the rest is stored in a Electrum wallet. I do not use third party services to store my coins.

I keep a wallet.dat file on DVDrom and have a newly password protected wallet because of my mining plans since I left the faucets for greener pastures. I have it newly protected so I can't get them stolen. Used to have a couple dollars at most in the wallet, so that didn't truly count if it was hacked, but now I give a damn, a BIG damn.

Maybe you should try to keep some offline. Exchanges might fail any time. Paper wallet cold storage is the way to go- cheap and simple!

That's good idea of keeping securely your hard earned coins. Same thing is recommended by bitcoin.it wiki. You better give to more than at least 3 friends/relatives who are in different geological locations. Explain to your family members how much bitcoin you own and how it works and how to receive and send from a wallet. That also very important and basic need to keep your hard earned bitcoin growing.

I've got the biggest chunk in cold storage (Casascius bar) which would require a plane trip for me to go get them. Hence the temptation to spend them is reduced.
The next biggest chunk in cold storage behind three locks
Then the next percentage on an android phone in airplane mode except when I need it.
Then a very small amount on my cell phone (mycelium) for my expenses and purchases.

When my Case wallet arrives tomorrow this might change - I'll keep my cold storages for savings and the rest on my Case.

store on online wallet, some on coinbase and the rest on blockchain.

That's a good thing. By keeping your coins on different wallets you will reduce to risk of losing all coins at once if any thing worst happened to one wallet service provider. I do save my coins on different online wallets. But I don't keep much on exchanges.

When you will have enough BTC you don't want to put that in an exchange for long time. You'll eventually need to setup a wallet in your pc and hold your own private keys.

Storing bitcoins or altcoin on exchanges are very dangerous even though they are well known, you might be victim for next Mt Gox "hacking incident".
You better use Electrum for windows, it's very light, has many features, good security & you don't have to sync for a long time (less than a minute)

But many people active in trading bitcoin in exchanges. There is no way other than keeping our hard earned bitcoin there itself. It must be time to innovate any kind of new things to resolve this kind of situation everybody faces.

Look if you bought the bitcoins for holding purposes say you strongly believe in bitcoin and think it will price will rise and want to keep them safe then you can either store your bitcoins in offline wallets or paper wallets for the best security but if you bought the bitcoins for gambling or buying or using them on day to day basis then just store them on blockchain.info wallet because it's the simplest and fastest bitcoin wallet :)

I store my bitcoins in different systems, cold storage for my savings (paper wallet for long time storage). Mobile wallet for hot wallet , bitcoins that i can spend in short time. Another bitcoins in an exchange for trading. I think exchange is the most problematic we saw some big collapses in exchanges and stolen bitcoins. I try to have bitcoins on exchange only when i'm doing trading.

I actually divide my bitcoins and store in different wallets to avoid loses in case of any thing goes wrong on one system. It is similar to diversifying our investment to avoid bigger loses. For every day use I will use XAPO account because of no fee and I feel it is quite safe in online wallets. Some stored in cold storage in my desktop and some in block-chain wallet.

Core is still the best software for me. I like it because it's simple and im so paranoid about my Bitcoins that I only trust the Bitcoin Core wallet. I don't see a better way to store Bitcoins to be honest. You can just compress the wallet with SHA256 (which rar and 7z have) and put it anywhere.

Right now Im storing all my coins in different wallets preferrably in online wallets like COINBASE , XAPO , COINS.PH (for cashout purposes) , BLOCKCHAIN and Android Wallet Mycelium (I preferred to hold majority of my coins here). I know the risk of storing wallet in web based wallets but hey with the current bitcoin trend and development they are doing I think somehow they will not just crash in a matter of seconds as they will face legal term.

That's the wise idea as suggested by many veterans. Make sure your hard disks are disconnected from internet for further securities. Also make sure the life time of hard disks, usually HDD are made up of magnetic tapes which are known for fade away in time.

That halleybtc looks like an investment site, take a look their site : https://www.halleybtc.com/ So he's storing his BTC on an online investment program which I think is kinda risky. It's not recommended to store your coins on such sites like that as they are most likely prone to collapse anytime soon.  :-\

Keep a private key store on secure disk, plan it on flash disk, CD disk or even hard disk , also save your hardware wallet in safe place which no one can reach it or even make a paper wallet at once.

Honestly, I'm not use hardware wallet, but you can see faq a trezor hardware wallet: FAQ (http://googleweblight.com/?lite_url=http://doc.satoshilabs.com/trezor-faq/&lc=id-ID&s=1&m=984&mlid=0_4&id=cwopVoP8MJCfpgO9sZrAAw&ts=1445530227&sig=APONPFmT2xaeI9Rb322p2EwZzKlPr1c3tQ)

I would just add that I have some extra bits laying in an altcoin exchange. I trade altcoins too, and I must say that it is very profitable if you know how to spot the indications that a coin will do good. The best and cheapest method so far is through a paper wallet and is stored in a safe place.

And i don't know how to operate Hardware wallets anyway  ::)

hardware wallets (at least the main ones like Trezor, Case, Ledger) are very easy to operate, arguably easier than some software ones
I do think the prices should be lowered, but if you have more than a few btcs it's worth the investment

how if your hardware wallets is lost? any back up there? just like youre lost your flashdisk..

I have the same worry. How can you back up your hardware wallet. Do you still need a paper copy of the password?

Keep a private key store on secure disk, plan it on flash disk, CD disk or even hard disk , also save your hardware wallet in safe place which no one can reach it or even make a paper wallet at once.

What happens if the hard ware is broken or lost? Can you buy the same hardware and import the key?
If im not wrong, yes you can
You just need to import he private key and you're in
To make sure you don't lose your private key, back that up into cloud like Gdrive or Mediafire ::)
Looks like im stuck with online wallet for now :P

Storing your privkeys in a cloud storage is the most foolish thing to do. It is as if you're giving away your money for free without much difficulty. Putting it in a flash drive is way safer than storing it in a cloud storage.

USB sticks are bit expensive if you consider some other back up methods.
For a true bitcoin lover the back ups will grow when the new address are being generated. I believe some 3 to 5 back ups in different geo locations are more than enough.

I have probably 10 USB sticks right now, where 8 of them are at least 3 years old, that's why I want to purchase a few extra. The price is fairly low as it cost around €6 for a 16GB Sandisk stick nowadays.

Virtual is something non physical, for short digital, so a virtual wallet is a wallet that's web based or either software based wallets. I think that's what he mean :D

Every time i see this thread, i'm tempted to say:

"In a sock, under my matress"...

In reality, i store about half of my funds in a multibit HD wallet, and the other half in an electrum wallet...

If i ever have a dormant stack (coins i don't use for lending/trading), i'll defenatly make a paper wallet (encrypted), laminate it, and store it both in my house, and my brother's house...

In Trezor I trust  :D

All my bitcoin/Litecoin wallets are on my Trezor and I make use of both Electrum,on pc, and MyCelium on my phone to interact with my Trezor.

If you do not have a Trezor and or a hardware wallet you should seriously consider one, in my opinion. It just changes the whole way you work with your bitcoins. Before I used to go through all the security steps to setup a wallet on offline machine, then again to setup watch-only wallets on online machine and having to move the transaction between the two etc...

Now I just slot the Trezor into the USB port, fire up Electrum and I'm good to go. The biggest advantage for me about the Trezor is that you do not have to store the bulk of your coins in a paper or cold wallet and the rest in a hot wallet. With Trezor you just store everything there and use it as needed. Its essentially always in cold storage in a way.

first i  was using coinbase, xapo for my all transaction saving wallets but after using electrum hardware wallet it is very good and i am storing all my saving in my hardware wallet but i keep some in coinbase which i use to do sportbetting transactions because if i use electrum for each transaction i have to pay fees which is loss for me. so i use coinbase for that.

Yes, you can then access it on any computer in the world if you so wish. In Windows simply use the command %appdata% and press enter, then a window will pop up where you can see a Bitcoin map. In that map you can replace the wallet file with whichever wallet.dat file you want. I always prefer offline storage. Cloud storage is quite a risk as people may be able to crack your online cloud map.

I have read many storys of people that had problems with blockchain... I would strongly advise against storing big amounts of BTC with them... If you don't have a lot of BTC, you might be better of with installing bitcoin core, multibit HD, electrum,... And move most of your coins to those wallets instead of keeping them on a blockchain wallet...

And if you are holder then armory would suit you the best.

It's basically the same program, it's just portable (you can put it on a usb-key). It's not installed, and can be ran straight from the key... You do need a laptop or desktop to plug the key into, so it's not offline storage. You have access to your wallet whenever you have access to any pc (be carefull for virusses and keyloggers when using untrusted PC's/laptops tough)

Bitcoins is the digital currency of the world. As you know even a real currency also needs a wallet to be stored so as digital currency.
There are many apps to store digital currency like xapo, mycelium,  bitcoin wallet etc. which will help us to store our bitcoin encripted on a android device..and electrum, bitcoin core wallets are works the same way for a computer
Dont worry about the privacy as this apps are really secured. So if you have btc and want to store it you can use this wallets.

Its much safe for me than the others..because you have  2 days before your withdrawal will be successful so you have a time to cancel it.  but first you need to extra wallet for emergency or spending wallet...

All the above with an online wallet you can access your bitcoins anywhere in the world, you never need to carry them.

Any suggestions on where a person who has already purchased bitcoins through Coinbase / circle should store them? I'm open to any suggestions from members. Thanks

I hold my Bitcoins in few places: Coinbase (but not much - just something like a reserve). My MultiBit desktop wallet (For use on a daily basis). Third place is just my wallet file that i have in 4 places - hard disk, two emails, pendrive and DVD :)

I feel safe :)

I think you should not store any relevant amount in any place that isn't a Local wallet. I would trust a Bitcoin Core running a full node in a secured computer as a good way to do long term storage while still being able to easily send and receive coins. Paper wallets are even more secure, but it's annoying if you want to create new coins addresses all the time and manage payments.

I use Bitcoin Core running a full node. That is just used to send and receive a small amount of bitcoin. Most of bitcoins are stored in a USB. The wallet files are encrypted with 7Zip. I just hope NSA does not have backdoor to the 7Zip encryption.

I keep my principal amount in classic Bitcoin Core wallet on a separate, clean laptop. Only the OS and wallet, nothing more ! When I need expenses or to top up my deposits at exchanges I sent the part in my wallet blockchain.info and make payments with it. I think it's safer, but that's just imho ...

Personally I store and save my bitcoin on my mobile wallet, specifically on Mycelium bitcoin wallet. I also suggest it as I find it secure and convenient. I can bring my bitcoin wallet securely on my pocket anywhere I go :)

I hope that you don't hold all of your coins there and that this is not a very big amount, since this is not the  most secure way to hold your coins. You need to do a research and educate yourself a bit more!
You're right, what if he loses his phone or even worse someone has access to his phone. Things would get bad pretty quickly. There's a slim chance that Mycelium would shut down as well. Apple just had a zero day exploit where anyone could root your phone just by going to a webpage on safari. Some sort of same zero day exploit was available on android as well if I recall correctly. So he's pretty much playing with fire.

Any income I earn will go to my blockchain wallet, where it doesn't sit for long as I constantly invest in different crypto platforms. I also got a minted wallet from nasty, which I use to store my "retirement" funds. I mostly send dust to there like my earnings from signature campaign and my U3 miner. As for my alt coin investments. I use a cold wallet.

Uhm, actually I store 1 btc there , which is the amount I am holding right now. Someone just told me mycelium will be a good wallet to store my coins and after some research, I used it. Yes I am aware its not the most secure way but this the only wallet I am comfortable with so far. I heard about hardware wallets and paper wallets, which were way more secured than a mobile wallet like mycelium. I need to research more though

Any suggestions on where a person who has already purchased bitcoins through Coinbase / circle should store them? I'm open to any suggestions from members. Thanks

offline wallet will be your best choice for extra security and privacy. i my self will be using
offline wallet too but for now im using coinbase and some other wallet but im not keeping huge
amount of bitcoin per wallet as for personal security.

Yes, hardware wallets together with the paper wallets are the safest. Also Electrum and Multibit are very safe for your PC. Of course together with the Bitcoin Core but Core is resource hungry and you need quite a lot of disk space and you must download about 50GB of blockchain.

So I can warmly suggest you Multibit or Electrum. But yes, Mycellium will do a job more than well until you don't do your research. Make sure that you do your research, that's very good until you don't feel completely comfortable!

I prefer to use Bitcoin Core, and if you want to spend it when you go out just use Online Wallet like Blockchain.
But don't store many Bitcoin on online wallet, it's very risky.
Right dude Even I have wallet in Block chain as well as in Coinbase also There is nothing to online wallet and all but We have make wallet's security more difficult like which is others should not easily crack your wallet. two factor authentication and security questions option many things are keep safe your wallet.

Was using Blockchain.info to store 2.25btc, thats until i read about johoe and the hundreads of dodge bitcoin addresses.   :(  it gave me the kick up the arse that i needed to get my small holding into cold storage.  Was always abit weary about generating my own address and private keys but after doing it and playing about with them for bit it's really not that hard.

so now i have most of my Btc on paper wallets and a usb thats never connected to the internet.  i also started using breadwallet for very small amounts for everyday spending.

In essence, do not store eggs in one basket.
I use cold and hot wallet, all the existing functions and also their share.
If I, cold wallet (offline) I use to store the results that I produce. While the hot wallet (online) I use as a tool for the transaction is often done and as needed.
For example cold wallet, electrum and multibit. While the hot wallet is blockchain wallet and xapo.

It is true , but it should be noted as well

For some people it will not be easy to do , with the internet connection is not so good , it would be very difficult to do . Will they be able to synchronize wallet?
Hence there is a supply of cold wallet besides bitcoin core that I think is safe to use .

so many bitcoin storage. just pick some storage as you need, lets take an example.
if you have not a big amount of bitcoin, store it in wallet like coinbase or on exchange, its secure enough.
but if you have a big amount, try to get papper wallet or hardware wallet like trezor.

Sorry but it's not. First of all it's an online wallet. You should never trust online wallets since they are run by the third parties.

Secondly, this is the buggiest wallet out there by far. Even the Bitcoin.org has removed it from official list of wallets because it has become amazingly unreliable!

Leaving your coins in the exchange is a bad idea, they might turn into another mt.gox ::)
I'd rather waste a few minutes of my time but making sure my coin is safe rather than put it into a risk ;D

I am using blockchain.info
It is one of the best storage.
Not really the best, they are prone to malicious hacks ;)
Might want to change it to something else more secure like offline wallets or a better online wallet with a decent security ;)

What hacks has blockchain.info ever fallen victim to?
They have 2 factor authentication, and a solid login.
Not that I endorse online wallets, but I see a lot of false claims about hackers on here.

I would advise people to use a paper wallet for long term storage as this is the best and safest option.

For actual daily spending it is best to use something like green address or armory wil a good strong password and 2fa

By using a debit card they are converting to local first.
By using purse.io for shopping you need not convert, they all do the math for you.
By using purse.io you get discounts 10% and better.

The conversion is done automatically online, you just need to charge your card with btc first
completely different from having to sell your btc for cash in order to use that cash at some local store

I think purse.io is awesome however it is only limited to Amazon as opposed to a debit card which can be used anywhere cards are accepted

the security is far better than the online wallets.

Currently I store most of my bitcoins in Electrum wallet. I do not worry about security too much, because I am very familiar with IT and know how to avoid most viruses, keyloggers and such.. With common sense these regular wallets used with your PC are very secure already.

I am planning to buy Trezor however very soon to keep as more secure cold wallet. When that happens I will use Electrum only as a hot wallet for purchases etc.

You can store any amount on a USB stick. Amph was saying that you make several copies just in case you lose one USB. But with several copies there is bigger risk that more people can find it.

USB stick thing is an ok thing if you are sure enough that you have done this in a safe environment, meaning that you have no viruses on your machine. Of course, can you ever be 100% sure?

well yes you can be 100% sure, if you buy a fresh new ssd and do a windows fresh installation(possible windows 7 or linux if you prefer), there is no way a fresh new system is compromised in any way

then the first thing you do is making a storage wallet, o've done exactly this with my coins and usb, and they are there untouched since years, flawless...

yes, there is if your BIOS is infected or if other partition or disks are infected, or if any of the 539 things you will need to download to make windows works properly is infected, or if the piratebay place where you got your system is compromised.

I think do it offline without help of computers or do a live section without drives or anything is a better solution

Im considering getting a Trezor at this point. I was worried that if the service they have which is some sort of login page went down, you would have your coins useless, but you can still access it.

I just want to store all my bitcoins in Cold storage.
Is it a trusted one?
I hope it is better than the others.

put your wallet in a usb stick $5 each, buy many of them, than secure them in a safe box or bank or whatever you want

it's the simplest and easiest way, don't waste time with apparently more secure and hard way, because they are not...

Is that the maximum amount you can store on a USB stick?

I don't know if it your kidding or not, it go me interested if I can store my btc on a USB that is safer than offline wallet.

Just curious?

You can store any amount on a USB stick. Amph was saying that you make several copies just in case you lose one USB. But with several copies there is bigger risk that more people can find it.

USB stick thing is an ok thing if you are sure enough that you have done this in a safe environment, meaning that you have no viruses on your machine. Of course, can you ever be 100% sure?

well yes you can be 100% sur,e if you buy a fresh new ssd and do a windows fresh installation(possible windows 7 or linux if you prefer), there is no way a fresh new system is compromised in any way

then the first thing you do is making a storage wallet, o've done exactly this with my coins and usb, and they are there untouched since years, flawless...

yes, there is if your BIOS is infected or if other partition or disks are infected, or if any of the 539 things you will need to download to make windows works properly is infected, or if the piratebay place where you got your system is compromised.

I think do it offline without help of computers or do a live section without drives or anything is a better solution

Exactly this! Although I must admit that this is quite paranoid! But the same exact thing happened to me and then I decided to get myself a Trezor. Trezor with a combination of paper wallets is the way I do it now and I must admit that I feel completely safe!

But fresh install with Windows 7 is a good way as well if you are not holding a lot of coins!

no because i've bought the whole system, motherboard was fresh cpu fresh and everything else, everything was new, impossible to have any virus

windows can be bought new also, so i don't see an issue on this

Well many people choose Coinbase because they actually paid for your TX fee ::)
and yes, they are pretty secure because all of your bitcoins are insured by them
Still, their verification process is a little bit a hassle for me so i just left Coinbase :P
Wonder how much i left at my old coinbase account ::)

You can use Electrum with a Trezor. You don't have to rely on the Trezor site.

I have a few online wallets and one desktop wallet. Mostly I won't store all my coins in a single online wallet because of safety so I distribute my coins in few different wallets and for everyday use I use XAPO wallet because transactions are quite fast and no transaction fee. For long term storage will be on desk top wallet.

Any suggestions on where a person who has already purchased bitcoins through Coinbase / circle should store them? I'm open to any suggestions from members. Thanks

Don't move and stay there where you are. Coinbase has its beginning as a wallet. Is a web wallet and that mean bitcoin when you want those and independently  where you are. It was enough to have a smartphone or computer and internet. Then Coinbase paid your fee of the send of bitcoins. Your bitcoins there are super safe. Coinbase distribute 98% of all bitcoins deposited on it offline and geographically in safe deposit boxes and vaults around the world. And the last but not the less important Coinbase is insured against employee theft and hacking in an amount that exceeds the average value of online bitcoin it holds at any given time. Specifically, Coinbase's insurance policy would respond in the event that bitcoin stored in Coinbase was lost or stolen as a result of a breach of our physical security, cyber security, or as a result of employee theft.

Who want more and what can be made more....  ;)

Depends on how much you have.If you have less then 1 btc, keep it on your mobile wallet, desktop or even online would be easy. For larger amounts, cold storage is the best available option to date

If you want to save bitcoin safe, keep it in a cold wallet, there are many options, such as bitcoin core, electrum, multibit etc and save it only on your computer and then perform the backup.

You can use hot wallet if you want to use for the daily transactions that are not too big like blockchain, coinbase etc. Or store it in the exchanger, if you want to make trade.

For who keeping quite huge amount of bitcoin, better to prepare yourself to keep it into offline wallet.
As we know if online doesn't mean will last forever. There will be one day whenever something bad happen so we can backup and save our bitcoin

you must waiting 48hours because it's "rules" of vault, The aim of this process if you coinbase account is stolen and the thief wants to take your bitcoin, you have 48 hours to stop it or cancel it

Its btc holders biggest fear.
This is why I'm just keeping mine to a cold storage.  I do however have about $100 or less on a web wallet which I regularly use to buy something online. I'm use to renew my domains in namecheap thru bitpay.

web wallets is easy to access in case i need something to buy quick.

I have a few coins on Coinbase and I'd be lying to you if I said that I am not worried about my coins being hacked. A Mt.Gox would be my worst nightmare. I am kind of glad that I got into the bitcoin exchanges after that. The coins on Coinbase are insured if you have two-factor authentication and 98% of them are kept offline. I'm making the switch of moving everything to my Multibit HD wallet and then use my hardware wallet (Trezor) to basically conduct transactions from there. At the end of the day, the only person I trust with my bitcoins are myself.

I "grew up" with Bitcoin Core so im not going to change to anything that doesn't deliver the maximum security that having the entire blockchain gives to you. Even if the blockchain becomes too big, by then the prune mode should be developed enough that we all can run Bitcoin node using smaller cuts of the blockchain thanks to the pruning technique. This even if not perfect compared to full node its way better than just going into a website and storing your stuff over there.

the biggest part of my bitcoins (around 90%) are in a paper wallet that i keep safe. the rest i use in hot wallets like bither and coinbase. i only keep a small amount on the coinbase wallet, so it isnt really risky for me.

I actually store my bitcoins in a bitcoin wallet. I'm not sure about you guys, but that's what I do. To be more specific, I use one electrum wallet and one coinbase wallet.

Just used 2 wallet if I was you just do more bitcoins in BlockChain and some in Coinbase or offline wallet.
Why? Because you never know what will happen to your bitcoin if something happens at least you have the other bitcoins you know.

I keep only small amounts of Bitcoins in Electrum wallet. I have paper wallets I redeeming when necessary - this protect me when my comp gets compromised to loose only minimum. I considered hardware wallets as well, but considering their high price, I change my mind if I will ever transact serious money.

I recommend using coinbase as your hot wallet, and then electrum as your child wallet. I use them both and I am very happy with them.

I see people using Coinbase for me I think it is a good hot wallet, but for some people they say they got hacked and it's bad. So my question why do you use it? Because BlockChain is quite good too. By the way what is a child wallet? I have never heard it before and I am one year with bitcoin.

Since the very beginning I do use USB sticks to store my wallet.dat files as cold wallets. Right now I have 10 USB sticks with all my backups. For me it's the best storing method.

I store my bitcoins in two online wallet BlockChain and CoinBase.
For now I like those two I haven't a problem yet. If I have more bitcoin I will just make a cold wallet to just hold it.

I keep my bitcoins safely on two wallets Electrum and Blockchain.
I dont trust other online wallets other than these two.
No issues using them both.
I also always suggest them to my friends.

I store my bitcoin at web based storage. I think web based storage is more efficient than cold storage. Blockchain and coinbase are good web based storage because of its simplicity and security. I tried cold storage in the past, but I lost my bitcoin after got a new notebook and I forgot to backup the key. So to prevent that thing happen again, I use blockchain.

Block chain storage is a nice idea to save our bitcoins there. if there is big amount of bitcoins to store then we can use it in investment so that we can get some extra amount of it. or else do mining. and wait for the price increase too.
