Title: Exciting Bitcoin Projects!
Post by: RealBitcoin on March 31, 2016, 05:49:40 PM
It is very exciting to see so many "killer app" projects upcoming in the near future. They will definitely add great value to bitcoin, and I think the price has to reflect that, so I think the price will go up after these things come out. I rank them by my estimation of their order of importance, and how I believe each one will add value to bitcoin.

0⟫ Segregated Witness (https://bitcoincore.org/en/2016/01/26/segwit-benefits/) - Larger block space, which will increase the capacity of bitcoin transaction, making room for more people. And empty rooms always tend to fill up, so I expect many new users from this idea. It also fixes malleability issues, and makes 0 confirm double spend harder so we can now build instant transaction systems with greater confidence and less risk of double spend with lightning network technology.

http://i68.tinypic.com/2i0w3yb.gif 1⟫ LightningNetwork (http://lightning.network/how-it-works/) - Increase bitcoin transaction throughput. Instant payments, scaleable payment system.

2⟫ Bitsquare (https://bitsquare.io/) - First decentralized cryptocurrency exchange, that cannot be censored or controlled, just like bitcoin. We are all tired of exit scams, hacks and inside jobs , or random account suspensions. The decentralized exchanges will bring us a new paradigm, and make trading more liquid and frictionless. This can bring a huge value to bitcoin. I`d put this as NR 1. over long term, but it might need a lot of testing and bugfixing before it can gain traction.

Other upcoming decentralized exchanges are:  http://www.coincer.org (http://www.coincer.org)  ,  http://www.supernet.org (http://www.supernet.org)  ,  https://etherex.org (https://etherex.org) , https://bcexchange.org (https://bcexchange.org/)

3⟫ OpenBazaar (http://openbazaar.org) - Decentralized P2P marketplace, a great invention that never existed before, and has the power to reshape global trading. It could work with any currency, so all currencies could gain value, but I think it will bring more value to cryptocurrencies, in majority for bitcoin. Frictionless global trading will also help many poor countries, that may already be looking after bitcoin, but need a "killer app" to start using it frequently. A huge project that will give indirect support to cryptocurrencies.

http://i68.tinypic.com/2i0w3yb.gif 4⟫ Embedded Mining (https://medium.com/@21/a-bitcoin-miner-in-every-device-and-in-every-hand-e315b40f2821) - 21 Inc plans to create embeddable microchip miners that can be integrated into any appliance (for ex smartphones) and it can create a world full of bitcoin miners in every device. This is huge, it can help decentralize bitcoin and it can help many people on the planet to grab some bitcoins for themselves.

http://i68.tinypic.com/2i0w3yb.gif 5⟫ RootStock (http://www.rootstock.io/) - "Is the first open-source smart contract platform with a 2-way peg to Bitcoin that also rewards the Bitcoin miners via merge-mining, allowing them to actively participate in the Smart Contract revolution. RSK goal is to add value and functionality to the Bitcoin ecosystem by enabling smart-contracts, near instant payments and higher-scalability."

http://i68.tinypic.com/2i0w3yb.gif 6⟫ Joystream (http://joystream.co/) - Decentralized filesharing system. It is really helpful for small producers: singers, musicians, DJ's, and other artists. They can just host their art and get a huge audience, while bitcoiners could get a new money earning platform. The hoster and the seeders share the revenue, while the downloaders pay for it. Therefore many newbies will have an opportunity to earn bitcoin, thus increasing the demand and utility for bitcoin. It's a big direct support for bitcoin.

7⟫ Brave Browser (https://www.brave.com/) - They will be the first browser to integrate bitcoin in their software, allowing people to spend and earn bitcoins directly. They have also designed their browser to be privacy friendly so its a good combination for bitcoin users. Although Chrome and Firefox own the market, they could gain a reasonable market share, and also force Chrome and Firefox to integrate bitcoin as well to stay competitive. In any case it will be big, however it will take a longer time than the other events, so i put this on the 7th spot.

8⟫ BitcoinJ Payment Channels (https://bitcoinj.github.io/#introduction) - Payment channels to send and receive microtransactions, good for faucets, tipping or any other smaller transactions, without miner fees. It's not that popular and established yet, but in the future it could be a technology that can make smaller transactions less costly.

9⟫ BitHappy (http://bithappy.co.uk/) - It's a bitcoin mobile browser for smartphones. It offers a marketplace where you can buy sell items with bitcoin. It can do micropayments, it connects directly the buyers with sellers, and it has escrow system. It works with Mycellium mobile wallet.

http://i68.tinypic.com/2i0w3yb.gif 10⟫ Rein (http://reinproject.org/) - It's an early prototype for a job market for freelancers. It has multisig capability, trade is trustless and pseudonymous. It is modeled after the internet with microhosting servers that compete with eachother.

11⟫ CredibleFriends (https://crediblefriends.com/) - Peer-to-Peer lending mobile app. It is a trust based p2p lending app for mobile phones via Bitcoins. It is the world's first p2p credit card system.

Let me know if I missed something, in my opinion these are the most exciting events or projects we can look forward to in the near future!

nice list dude. i like Joystream. that may give alot more people an option to earn coins.

+ IBLTs and weak blocks: 90% or more reduction in critical bandwidth to relay blocks created by miners who want their blocks to propagate quickly with a modest increase in total bandwidth, bringing many of the benefits of the Bitcoin Relay Network to all full nodes. This improvement is accomplished by spreading bandwidth usage out over time for full nodes, which means IBLT and weak blocks may allow for safer future increases to the max block size.

Thank you, RealBitcoin, for the list.  I had not seen summaries of some of these technologies so nicely stated.  Great thread.

I cannot speculate as to which are most important, but it is clear that these are exciting developments.  They do bode well for BTC.  And now we can keep our eyes open to see when some of these killer apps come online.

There was another thread somewhere around here but that one wasnt really emphasizing on the major ones.

I think these technologies listed there could ,and will have the biggest impact on bitcoin, and it will happen in the near future if they release them to their schedule.

It is very likely that it will be in 2016, so that makes 2016 the most bullish year for bitcoin that I can imagine since 2013 :)

Huge project, definitely nr.1.

2⟫ Block reward halving (http://thehalvening.com/) - Decreases yearly inflation from ~8% to ~3.6%, definitely a huge added value to bitcoin, and has the possibility to increase it's price. It will also make bitcoin less fiat-like, and probably larger investors will see bitcoin as more stable and established project. I also think that it will decrease price volatility, making bitcoin more stable in the long term. Huge positive and direct impact for bitcoin.

3⟫ Zerocoin (http://zerocoin.org/) - Fixes bitcoin's privacy problems, which directly drags down bitcoin's fungibility. This technology will ensure that all coins will be equally equal, no matter what source they come from. A huge step forward for bitcoin financial privacy.

4⟫ OpenBazaar (http://openbazaar.org) - Decentralized P2P marketplace, a great invention that never existed before, and has the power to reshape global trading. 5⟫ Ethereum (https://ethereum.org/) - Decentralized software system and cryptocurrency. I dont view ethereum as a competitor to bitcoin, but as a complementary system. With Ethereum we can have all sorts of decentralized trustless systems, for example decentralized exchanges that are eagerly awaited, since so many existing centralized bitcoin exchanges are scams. Ethereum will help itself grow, and with it, all other cryptocurrencies, that can benefit from this technology. A huge indirect support for bitcoin.

6⟫ Joystream (http://joystream.co/) - Decentralized filesharing system. It is really helpful for small producers: singers, musicians, DJ's, and other artists. They can just host their art for a very affordable price and get a huge audience, while bitcoiners could get a new money earning platform. These two are on my radar and I hope to be using OpenBazaar soon, been following development and testing.  I had not heard of Joystream but it sounds interesting and am excited to see where that goes.  Definitely an exciting year for bitcoin.

I feel that way too. Even if those systems are quite different and Ehtereum is not exactly trying to be top crypto money and dethrone bitcoin.
But people might think otherwise and think of it more like a threat to popularity of BTC. It is not 100% positive news imo.

The only one I'm excited about is the block halving it means that we will probably see a dump because people are expecting the price to rise. But after a few months it will start rising steadily but that only a theory. :P I will probably wait and watch on that day the bitcoin price to see if my prediction is true

It will dump if the price goes up, if nothing changes then chances are people will continue waiting, maybe there will be a small slide. I know this is more speculation, but I don't think people will sell at a loss just because the value didn't immediately go up.

This Joystream project sounds very promising if you really can get rewards for uploading your stuff. Has anyone used the program and have you been paid? I can't understand from their website if it's still in development or it's the final version of the product. My only concern is whether or not this BitTorrent client will have access to all the trackers or it will be a closed system.

I don't think I get the right idea of joystream, so please correct me if I'm wrong, joystream is basically a torrenting site (and app) which if you upload or seed, you'll get satoshi in return?

Athereum and zerocoin are more like competitors.

if Athereum integrate uᴉoɔʇᴉq in its platform, as a means of payment(not talking abotu the currency eth itself) than i can not see it as a competitor, zerocoin definitely yes, it's like a "DarkFlarb sha256"

I cannot wait for SegWit and the Lightning network and hope it gets released before the OpenBazaar goes mainstream. I think we will see a significant increase in the adoption rate, once OpenBazaar goes wild and this will add a lot of extra traffic, just in time for the improvements that SegWit and the Lightning network will bring. ^smile^

SegWit we might see implemented in the next weeks.
Lightning Network will definitely take much much more time.
But maybe other forms of payment channels like 21inc's version will be realized sooner. We'll see.

Athereum and zerocoin are more like competitors.

Not necessarly.

Ethereum can build decentralized exchanges because many are scams. Or any other decentralized investments like faucets, gambling, trading, etc.

There are tons of scam sites in this domain, so if we remove the trust in the middleman and put the trust in the code it would be better.

And of course it would be compatible with bitcoin.

Zerocoin has only 1 function, privacy and fungibility for bitcoin. It doesnt dethrone anyone.

Seeders get paid, downloaders pay the seeders.

So you write a book, upload it, set a download price, and then those that download it pay for it.

I edited the first post, now the explanation is more clear regarding joystream. Its basically a revenue sharing system between hosters and seeders.

^smile^

It will take a while for the OpenBazaar to go mainstream, as the reputation system will take many months to establish.

Probably many years instead. The situation might be similar to localbitcoins, already here many years, but centralized solutions to buy/sell Bitcoin are much more used, so Im pretty sceptical OpenBazaar can compare with ebay in next 5-10 years.

It will take some time until the sheeps catch in, but I expect at least by next year the entire Bitcoin community will use it.

So It could bring a couple billions into our economy.

And the downloader payment are deducted from their already invested wallet? Its clever and innovative, appreciating small artist(s) and allow them to grow, just as you said. I don't assume people can say that torrenting would  be a piracy anymore (a paradigm that I believe are still set on some people's mind) since that we pay for the torrent file.

That's a good list you have there mate.I'm stoked for OpenBazzar.Though its already launched in its Beta stages,I'm waiting for a final official launch from the developers where the node-node architecture is fixed.

The list is very comprehensive.  However the most important part for me is the Halving.
That will really determine the future of this currency in the long term. Lets hope for the
best.

Thanks for setting up this list, it helps remaining positive about BTC. Segregated Witness is and the Lightning Network aren't exactly done deals, but we can be quite confident they're coming. I'm more concerned with the halving. Many miners may have to cease operating because of it, meaning even more concentration, and I don't like it.

i am most excited about two of the projects listed here
the OpenBazaar, because it is an awesome way of introducing bitcoin as a currency (what bitcoin is really meant to be) and the whole decentralized theme is the best feature in my opinion.

also Brave Browser, especially since it is being developed by Mozilla developers. i have always loved Mozilla company and the way they respect their users security and privacy. i hope this browser can be a hit just like firefox.

I think joystream (decentralized file sharing system) will be the most valuable one but i have doubt how they can store large file in a system i mean it will require so much time to sync. the wallet to do so.
Another most interesting project which is already lauched is decentralized marketplace one of the example is syscoin however they are still in beta phase with testnet.

All of this type of apps that have high market demand gonna skyrocket the value of crypto including bitcoin and coins used on those apps. I want to live more to see all of this projects with my eye. hehe  ;)

I followed FACTOM's project, and so far it's only vaporware, there is no guarantee that any govt will adopt their technology.

Besides what good does FACTOM do to bitcoin? It's only a recordkeeping system for medical or other gov records, how does it benefit bitcoin?

This list is about BITCOIN projects, or other projects that directly or indirectly affect BITCOIN!

I think Factom had a good idea and im not sure if you can call it vaporware, it's yet to be proven that it can survive tho, once sidechains are deployed there will be ways to do that under the Bitcoin ecosystem.

Maidsafe is another great project that I think is undervalued, but has to demonstrate some things yet before I considering investing big time.

ETH has also to prove that it can scale his horribly big blockchain.

Overall just invest in Bitcoin, it's the best investment right now.

Well it's too early to say that now, and it doesnt have any concrete example of functionality yet.

We need to wait more until it becomes established. Maybe it can be linked to bitcoin via sidechains and create some partnership there.

We need concrete examples first. This is just theory at the moment.

Maidsafe is being worked on right now, and it still needs a lot of more development before it becomes operational.

ETH is already operational but it seems like its in a bubble now, it also needs more development, but i added it to the list because its already operational, while other coins here are not.

It is very exciting to see so many "killer app" projects upcoming in the near future. They will definitely add great value to bitcoin, and I think the price has to reflect that, so I think the price will go up after these things come out. I rank them by my estimation of their order of importance, and how I believe each one will add value to bitcoin.

http://i65.tinypic.com/2pqwgeu.png 1⟫ Segregated Witness (https://bitcoincore.org/en/2016/01/26/segwit-benefits/) and LightningNetwork (http://lightning.network/how-it-works/) - Larger block space, which will increase the capacity of bitcoin transaction, making room for more people. And empty rooms always tend to fill up, so I expect many new users from this idea. It also fixes malleability issues, and makes 0 confirm double spend harder so we can now build instant transaction systems with greater confidence and less risk of double spend with lightning network technology. Huge project, definitely nr.1.

http://i65.tinypic.com/2pqwgeu.png 2⟫ Block reward halving (http://thehalvening.com/) - Decreases yearly inflation from ~8% to ~3.6%, definitely a huge added value to bitcoin, and has the possibility to increase it's price. It will also make bitcoin less fiat-like, and probably larger investors will see bitcoin as more stable and established project. I also think that it will decrease price volatility, making bitcoin more stable in the long term. Huge positive and direct impact for bitcoin.

http://i65.tinypic.com/2pqwgeu.png 3⟫ Zerocoin (http://zerocoin.org/) - Fixes bitcoin's privacy problems, which directly drags down bitcoin's fungibility.

A huge indirect support for bitcoin.

http://i65.tinypic.com/2pqwgeu.png 6⟫ Joystream (http://joystream.co/) - Decentralized filesharing system. It's a big direct support for bitcoin.

http://i65.tinypic.com/2pqwgeu.png 7⟫ Brave Browser (https://www.brave.com/) - They will be the first browser to integrate bitcoin in their software, allowing people to spend and earn bitcoins directly. They have also designed their browser to be privacy friendly so its a good combination for bitcoin users. Although Chrome and Firefox own the market, they could gain a reasonable market share, and also force Chrome and Firefox to integrate bitcoin as well to stay competitive. In any case it will be big, however it will take a longer time than the other events, so i put this on the 7th spot.

http://i65.tinypic.com/2pqwgeu.png 8⟫ BitcoinJ Payment Channels (https://bitcoinj.github.io/#introduction) - Payment channels to send and receive microtransactions, good for faucets, tipping or any other smaller transactions, without miner fees. It's not that popular and established yet, but in the future it could be a technology that can make smaller transactions less costly.

Let me know if I missed something, in my opinion these are the most exciting events we can look forward to in the near future!

Surprised to see Rootstock didn't make your list. It allows for executing Turing complete scripts with the Bitcoin blockchain as the backbone. It essentially allows all the apps that run in Ethereum to run on Bitcoin.

Also, what about Hivemind/Truthcoin? I think oracles are going to become increasingly important in the coming years, and a decentralized oracle system is a great addition to Bitcoin.

Therefore many newbies will have an opportunity to earn bitcoin, thus increasing the demand and utility for bitcoin. It's a big direct support for bitcoin.

http://i65.tinypic.com/2pqwgeu.png 7⟫ Brave Browser (https://www.brave.com/) - They will be the first browser to integrate bitcoin in their software, allowing people to spend and earn bitcoins directly.

Let me know if I missed something, in my opinion these are the most exciting events or projects we can look forward to in the near future!

its complete project for bitcoin as i know, you not missing anything, and the most exciting bitcoin projects for me is bitcoin halving and openbazaar,i thin everybody sgree with that, its so good and can't wait for that two, openbazaar has been launch.its nice.

Looks like ethereum 0.7.1 is out.

I just hope somebody will create some useful applications already. I would look forward to a decentralized exchange, because I`m tired of hacks and exit scams of existing exchanges.

Speaking of which, there are already many decentralize exchanges coming out.

I`ll compile a list of them soon, and post them here

They are imperative for bitcoin, and the crypto ecosystem, because we are all tired of exit scams and hacks!

No, because projects and developments is for actual projects being developed.

My topic is only about reminding people about exciting projects, and we can discuss them here.

They all impact bitcoin hugely, and it belongs to bitcoin discussion!

I am looking forward to testing the full version of Brave browser. The concept looks really interesting and the feature of getting paid to see ads may work well or crash and burn and I am curious to see what will happen. Still the current version has a lot of way to go.
I too think that it will be kind of cool to earn money watching ads, but I'll wait and see how it works out first before getting my hopes up. Something like that seems like a good idea, but there is no guarantee that it will work properly, or if it will even be worth it.

They will require KYC though, so it might not be as exciting as it first sounded.

But i`m sure something will come out of it. The mere fact of popularizing bitcoin to the masses cannot be bad in any way.

Guys I`m very excited about Bitsquare now. I just heard about it a few days ago literally, it was in the unknown for months yet it has been developed on.

Just imagine the possibilities with this: NO MORE MT GOX or CRYPTSY!!!

I think its the NR 1 most important project right now. Yes openbazar and the others are cool too, but I just feel a decentralized exchange is the real big deal here.

Imagine the liquidity it can add to cryptocurrencies.

Few updates:

  • Ethereum 0.7.2 is out!
  • New Openbazaar should come out in the next days, they have many new commits since last release
  • Only 4 days left until Bitsquare is out! It's very exciting!
  • Only 79 days left until block reward halving!
  • Brave Browser 0.9.2 is out!

Quite a good list of updates in the last week. Looks like all devs are very busy now! Good job!

but I don't think including an altcoin (ethereum) among exciting bitcoin projects is a right, it has nothing to do with bitcoin even if it is exciting.

You know how many exciting smart contracts can be done in ethereum? That can all help bitcoin.

For example decentralized applications based on bitcoin, softwares, or even offchains can be hosted there. Bitcoin can benefit the most from it.

Any smart contract that can be run in Ethereum can be run on top of Bitcoin via rootstock so that's a plus. Bitcoin made a conscious effort to not be Turing-complete no matter how exciting, but secondary protocols certainly can.

○ you can now set a SMTP server in settings/advanced to send email messages when various events occur.
○ if a listing can't be shipped to you, it is marked with an icon in the Discover and Store views.
○ listings are marked whether they are a physical, digital, or service listing. This only applies to listings made since the server was updated with the code to show this data.
○ basic information about your transactions can be exported to CSV from the transactions page

○ Bitcoin prices are now formatted according to the language of the user.
○ a bug in the link for a listing in the transaction modal was fixed.

People need to familiarize themselves with them because these will be the future of crypto.

I can already see massive money flowing inside these projects, and they can all pull billions more into bitcoin as well.

Bitcoin no doubt has a very bright future ahead!

The only one I'm excited about is the block halving it means that we will probably see a dump because people are expecting the price to rise. But after a few months it will start rising steadily but that only a theory. :P I will probably wait and watch on that day the bitcoin price to see if my prediction is true

Of course holders are going to dump when price reach just enough for them. Its always been the cycle they buy low sell high.
When it reach just about $600 they might just even sell to buy low again if it goes down. if not then that's just going to make them regret.

That's what I've been saying to multiple 'halving' threads. I see holders are too optimistic about the halving, thinking that the price would rise dramatically and go stable, when in fact most of them are willing to dump their coins when the price goes up. I'm just sad that only a few were able to understand me and the bad side of me is glad, that only a few were able to understand me.

Riding the waves is a good way to profit , but only because there are long term holders that dont sell.

If everyone would be a trader, then we would not have the price stability that we have currently.

The volatility is decreasing ,and traders will have less waves to ride on, so they will have to get better at what they do.

So I think a buy & hold strategy can be much better for bitcoin.

coinalytics.co used to have a nice little (free!) tool that allowed anyone to track a BTC address's outputs to other wallets.  It helped me to assess how good the standard mixing tools were.  IMO, it's too bad for us that coinalytics does not have their interesting tool available anymore.

I am no expert, but it looked like (at least back then) that thorough mixing helped a lot.  Of course there were and are other ways to track BTC activity...

For me, the best Bitcoin and other Cryptocurrency projects are those that aren't reinventing the wheel or replacing the current state of things, but those that are seeking to improve the way some things are done in a centralized way, like identity and record keeping.

Thats just a wallet provider. I`m talking here about projects that enhance bitcoin's features and expand their userbase.

For example the thunder network is another exciting one, however it's too new now so i`ll wait a bit to add it to the list.

I kinda want to see established projects, because there are many projects that failed here before even finished.

Removed ETH from the list. What can I say, i`m quite dissapointed with ETH, it's way too overvalued and pumped up irrationally.

Also it's way more centralized than it looks like, so I`m not sure if it's a good influence on bitcoin. Althought ETH havent stolen market cap from bitcoin, and ETH smart contracts might become useful, ETH the coin itself is what I`m skeptical about and it's development process.

I`d just rather list here projects that will be beneficial to bitcoin, rather than the coin.

Yea they are really exciting, but it would not have so big impact on bitcoin just yet. The 21 co bitcoin computers are not very mainstream yet so it needs more time until it can have impact.

For now we see the projects listed in my list that are already operational and can grow big anytime. For example the openbazaar is just waiting to become a new trend, it has huge potential.

But i am watching both 21 and blockstream for exciting stuff!

List of decentralized cryptocurrency exchanges:

https://bitsquare.io/

http://mercuryex.com/

http://www.coincer.org/

https://etherex.org/

Of which BITSQUARE is the closest of being complete, it will launch on April 27th:

https://bitsquare.io/

Do a lot of people use Bitsquare? This seems to be a breakthrough in trading platforms. I'm wondering why there's no clamor behind it.

Not yet, it probably needs to reach critical mass before tons of people start using it.

Its still early release with many bugs so people need more time to get comfortable with it.

It is very exciting to see so many "killer app" projects upcoming in the near future. They will definitely add great value to bitcoin, and I think the price has to reflect that, so I think the price will go up after these things come out. I rank them by my estimation of their order of importance, and how I believe each one will add value to bitcoin.

http://i68.tinypic.com/2i0w3yb.gif 1⟫ Segregated Witness (https://bitcoincore.org/en/2016/01/26/segwit-benefits/) and LightningNetwork (http://lightning.network/how-it-works/) - Larger block space, which will increase the capacity of bitcoin transaction, making room for more people. And empty rooms always tend to fill up, so I expect many new users from this idea. It also fixes malleability issues, and makes 0 confirm double spend harder so we can now build instant transaction systems with greater confidence and less risk of double spend with lightning network technology. Huge project, definitely nr.1.

http://i68.tinypic.com/2i0w3yb.gif 2⟫ Block reward halving (http://thehalvening.com/) - Decreases yearly inflation from ~9% to ~4%, definitely a huge added value to bitcoin, and has the possibility to increase it's price. It will also make bitcoin less fiat-like, and probably larger investors will see bitcoin as more stable and established project. I also think that it will decrease price volatility, making bitcoin more stable in the long term. Huge positive and direct impact for bitcoin.

3⟫ Bitsquare (https://bitsquare.io/) - First decentralized cryptocurrency exchange, that cannot be censored or controlled, just like bitcoin.

Other upcoming decentralized exchanges are: http://mercuryex.com (http://mercuryex.com)  ,  http://www.coincer.org (http://www.coincer.org)  ,  http://www.supernet.org (http://www.supernet.org)  ,  https://etherex.org (https://etherex.org) ,
                                                                    https://bcexchange.org (https://bcexchange.org/)

http://i68.tinypic.com/2i0w3yb.gif 4⟫ Zerocoin (http://zerocoin.org/) - Fixes bitcoin's privacy problems, which directly drags down bitcoin's fungibility. This technology will ensure that all coins will be equally equal, no matter what source they come from. A huge step forward for bitcoin financial privacy.

5⟫ OpenBazaar (http://openbazaar.org) - Decentralized P2P marketplace, a great invention that never existed before, and has the power to reshape global trading. It could work with any currency, so all currencies could gain value, but I think it will bring more value to cryptocurrencies, in majority for bitcoin. Frictionless global trading will also help many poor countries, that may already be looking after bitcoin, but need a "killer app" to start using it frequently. A huge project that will give indirect support to cryptocurrencies.

http://i68.tinypic.com/2i0w3yb.gif 6⟫ RootStock (http://www.rootstock.io/) - Is the first open-source smart contract platform with a 2-way peg to Bitcoin that also rewards the Bitcoin miners via merge-mining, allowing them to actively participate in the Smart Contract revolution. RSK goal is to add value and functionality to the Bitcoin ecosystem by enabling smart-contracts, near instant payments and higher-scalability.

http://i68.tinypic.com/2i0w3yb.gif 7⟫ Joystream (http://joystream.co/) - Decentralized filesharing system. It's a big direct support for bitcoin.

http://i68.tinypic.com/2i0w3yb.gif 8⟫ Brave Browser (https://www.brave.com/) - They will be the first browser to integrate bitcoin in their software, allowing people to spend and earn bitcoins directly. They have also designed their browser to be privacy friendly so its a good combination for bitcoin users. Although Chrome and Firefox own the market, they could gain a reasonable market share, and also force Chrome and Firefox to integrate bitcoin as well to stay competitive. In any case it will be big, however it will take a longer time than the other events, so i put this on the 7th spot.

http://i68.tinypic.com/2i0w3yb.gif 9⟫ BitcoinJ Payment Channels (https://bitcoinj.github.io/#introduction) - Payment channels to send and receive microtransactions, good for faucets, tipping or any other smaller transactions, without miner fees. It's not that popular and established yet, but in the future it could be a technology that can make smaller transactions less costly.

Let me know if I missed something, in my opinion these are the most exciting events or projects we can look forward to in the near future!

I'm very glad to saw this, along the time bitcoin will make a good progress and revolution. Nice list, dude. It's make me optimistic about the growth of bitcoin.

I think only the first two are of real significance (though the reward halving can't be considered a "project" :D), because these are direct features of Bitcoin. The other projects might catch on, but they might also fail, being forgotten after a few months. A very high failure rate is an integral part of the nature of new startups.

I think a problem of the mentioned startups is that they are too nerdy to have success at a bigger scale. The benefits they offer are simply not relevant for the majority of users - which doesn't mean that I personally contest that they offer real benefits. For example OpenBazaar was hailed as the new decentralized eBay but hasn't attracted a significant user base yet. The problem is, if there are almost no users, the platform is also not attracting new users. The higher the effort to use a system, the worse this problem becomes...

Maybe the really exciting Bitcoin projects are not even known yet.

I doubt it, most of them are already established or are on the verge of growth. I cant see openbazaar going extinct, it is growing every day.

Once the innovation is out of pandoras box, you cannot put it back.

But can I do trades in it now? I downloaded it but I still have not installed it yet.

I think yes, but you will find only little volume, it's still not as established as the other projects since it only came out a few weeks ago.

Give it some time and you will see many users using it.

Keep an eye on 21.co, chain and blockstream as they are working on the most exciting stuff in BTC today

Ok I`ve added 21 inc to point 6) with their embedded mining initiative, they sure can create a lot of change with that technology. I cant wait to see many people using them.

But it will take many years for it to be widespread, so it's only 6th, as my list ranks the stuff by order of importance.

Price spike is not caused by halving alone. It is more of a combination of these recent events: fear of Brexit with all its economic aftermath, recognition of blockchain as useful invention,
chinese depositors, investors and speculators making moves, and of course halving.

Open Bazaar was announced as groundbreaking killer of eBay and from what I see this platform is almost dead.

And I would like to heard about Bitsquare some more, is there anyone who actually traded there?

It is one of the exciting part but i think the most exciting is the Bitcoin Projects, with this on release bring more hype, usefullness, make bitcoin more newbie friendly, cover more area in real life application and  more.  More adoption and more new friends to meet while earning:D Isn't it feel nice if you and all of your friend speak in the same language :D .

and im so much interested on Bitsquare and Openbazaar.

Dead? What are you talking about, it has more users than ever.

But yes the adoption is slow because they dont have integrated bitcoin wallet yet which should come out in the next updates.

Both of them need more time to catch on, even bitcoin only had a handful of people in the first weeks, and now it has tens of millions.

The same goes for all inventions!

Certainly not dead but definitely needs a lot of improvement. The last time I searched there I can't find much other than other cryptocurrencies.

I can see JoyStream has similarities with Storj. Wonder which of the two would blossom in the long term.

And how is this exactly an exciting bitcoin project? Although I get what you are trying to say and everyone does too, apparently. Holding on to bitcoins definitely seems like an easy profit for us. But of course, the risks are there too like when bitcoin value drops dramatically.

Patience my friend. Bitcoin's first releases were buggy like hell, it was written in windows c++ which has tons of errors and crashes.

Now after 7 years it became the most secure and most bug-reviewed software on the planet.

I`m sure if you give them time ,it will be very feature-rich and all bugs fixed.

I think they need more years to be able to compete with fiat based marketplaces - or they will be gone before that would happen.

Apparently - as they advertise - "BitHappy services enables anyone to buy and sell goods and services with Bitcoin."

Also: "BitHappy is the world's first Bitcoin Browser and the solution to mainstream adoption of Bitcoin."

and "BitHappy is an alternative to the existing mobile payment system and a solution for the 2.5 billion unbanked."

So have anyone tried it alredy or you think it is too good to be true?

http://i68.tinypic.com/2i0w3yb.gif 4⟫ Zerocoin (http://zerocoin.org/) - Fixes bitcoin's privacy problems, which directly drags down bitcoin's fungibility.

A huge project that will give indirect support to cryptocurrencies.

http://i68.tinypic.com/2i0w3yb.gif 6⟫ Embedded Mining (https://medium.com/@21/a-bitcoin-miner-in-every-device-and-in-every-hand-e315b40f2821) - 21 Inc plans to create embeddable microchip miners that can be integrated into any appliance (for ex smartphones) and it can create a world full of bitcoin miners in every device. This is huge, it can help decentralize bitcoin and it can help many people on the planet to grab some bitcoins for themselves.

http://i68.tinypic.com/2i0w3yb.gif 7⟫ RootStock (http://www.rootstock.io/) - "Is the first open-source smart contract platform with a 2-way peg to Bitcoin that also rewards the Bitcoin miners via merge-mining, allowing them to actively participate in the Smart Contract revolution. RSK goal is to add value and functionality to the Bitcoin ecosystem by enabling smart-contracts, near instant payments and higher-scalability."

http://i68.tinypic.com/2i0w3yb.gif 8⟫ Joystream (http://joystream.co/) - Decentralized filesharing system. It's a big direct support for bitcoin.

http://i68.tinypic.com/2i0w3yb.gif 9⟫ Brave Browser (https://www.brave.com/) - They will be the first browser to integrate bitcoin in their software, allowing people to spend and earn bitcoins directly. They have also designed their browser to be privacy friendly so its a good combination for bitcoin users. Although Chrome and Firefox own the market, they could gain a reasonable market share, and also force Chrome and Firefox to integrate bitcoin as well to stay competitive. In any case it will be big, however it will take a longer time than the other events, so i put this on the 7th spot.

http://i68.tinypic.com/2i0w3yb.gif 10⟫ BitcoinJ Payment Channels (https://bitcoinj.github.io/#introduction) - Payment channels to send and receive microtransactions, good for faucets, tipping or any other smaller transactions, without miner fees. It's not that popular and established yet, but in the future it could be a technology that can make smaller transactions less costly.

Let me know if I missed something, in my opinion these are the most exciting events or projects we can look forward to in the near future!

This was a very nice thread and the list it is very informative for well thanks for this , now I knew it there would be so much exciting and new programs for bitcoin I feel very excited for the decentralized exchange I think that would be more safe and secure , also the embedded mining would be great because only with a microchip even at smartphone or any other device you can have your bitcoin mining .

Anyone here heard about this project - BitHappy? http://bithappy.co.uk/ (http://bithappy.co.uk/)

This is new for me just heard from you and will be reading some information about this.
Oh and what a great list of projects I see a lot will change after this halving. Hope it all goes well.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but since this thread is talking about bitcoin related project, does anybody know about LBRY? https://lbry.io/
From what I catch, this website is about media sharing which we can get paid if anyone choose to watch our content? And the payment is on an altcoin called LBRY?

Yes its a nice project, but it has nothing to do with bitcoin.

Here we are focusing on bitcoin related projects and events that directly or indirectly influence bitcoin positively.

2⟫ Block reward halving (http://thehalvening.com/) - Decreases yearly inflation from ~9% to ~4%, definitely a huge added value to bitcoin, and has the possibility to increase it's price.

Other upcoming decentralized exchanges are: http://mercuryex.com (http://mercuryex.com)  ,  http://www.coincer.org (http://www.coincer.org)  ,  http://www.supernet.org (http://www.supernet.org)  ,  https://etherex.org (https://etherex.org) ,
                                                                    https://bcexchange.org (https://bcexchange.org/)

I like bitsquare because its so handy, it has a downloadable apps that enables you to buy and sell bitcoins in exchange to national currency or other altcoins or cryptocurrency. Its just great that all i need is within one app and the exchange are just what I wanted. to download it will take 10 to 15 minutes max depending on your internet connection. And there you go enjoy trading.

Bitcoin has by far the lowest inflation rate of all currencies therefore the capital should come into it anytime now.
The rise up in value would take several weeks, months even. If we look at the first halving, the price really doubled. But it actually took roughly two months for that to happen. I'm not sure whether that would apply to today as well, but maybe, just maybe it's going to need that much time as well.

I agree that the price will eventually start to go up but I think it might take a lot longer that last time for it to double. The halving has come and gone but it didn't bring a massive boost in adoption. We'll have to wait for the Bitcoin adoption rate to continue its own natural evolution.

I'm not sure if you can compare first halving to this one.
During the first halving bitcoin was not very famous.
Now it's know by a lot of people, speculators and gamblers among them. And that changes the price developement compared to first halving.

Let's just wait and see, the inflation is pretty low now compared to the other fiat currencies.

Capital can flow into bitcoin anytime now, it's volatility is lowering constantly, and big investors will definitely consider it in the future.

There are many more interesting projects suggested by the posters of this thread and i will have to review them all.

I didnt expected the price to go up suddenly to 1000 $, but it can still happen over the course of a few months.

I guess bitcoin is now stabilized, with low inflation, and i think many big investors can be looking into it now as it is a safe haven.

And we will see many more good projects that will send more users.

Im also excited for the embedded mining project since it will invite more miners to bitcoin, and it will also ease the transactions that will invite more big whales to invest in bitcoin.

It is a decentralized altcoin exchange, but it works with bitcoin as base currency. You can store bitcoins in the bitsquare wallet, while you are trading there.

Bitsquare is an exchange platform pretty much like Coinbase except that you have to download this one. I believe it must be pretty safe to use since it has gathered a really good reputation. You can always google or check in service announcement/discussion section for more reviews and safety guidelines on any bitcoin services usually.

It is open source so it should be safe, except if new bugs get discovered.

I'm sure the development team is working hard to fix them, they release now a new one with new features every 1-2 weeks.

That feature is not yet implemented to my knowledge, but they promised one.

That is why it's not green checked yet.

Hi, trying to suggest another exciting things, anyone tried liqui.io yet? Its basically an exchanger (currently only have a few altcoin, but they're planning to expand) but they have this "interest" feature where you can put your amount for 24 hours and get 0.066 interest. It is low, but its still better than just letting the amount sat on your wallet and didn't accumulate at all.

Originally I would have suggested BitcoinCard (https://card.mycelium.com/index.html) as one of the most exciting projects. However I've changed my opinion based on the retail-based distribution model Mycelium has chosen for the cards.

The BitcoinCard would have been an extremely disruptive device if it was offered as an independent p2p payment solution, meaning the user purchases the card to obtain a physical Bitcoin wallet with implemented payment functionality. While p2p payments are available with BitcoinCard in its current form, the fact that the card is meant to be issued by retail companies basically eliminates the privacy users would have with an independent device.

That's disappointing.

It is good that we are seeing new ways of doing things thru bitcoin. But is it just me or what was supposedly the biggest projects in the bitcoin world seldom used when released. Two examples of these are Bitsquare and Open Bazaar. After release I have not heard any news of them anymore. I checked Bitsquare and there is only small volume traded over there. Is this a sign that bitcoin as a currency is irrelevant and it is treated more like a commodity?

I am not complaining. I am telling you that this is what is happening right now. Are you yourself using Bitsquare for trading BTC? It is very hard buying at a good price because only a small people are using it. In Open Bazaar you have to be online whole year round so that your store will be online also. It is not very usable that way.

I am just telling the truth do not be angry. I am also a supporter like you but these things that are bad should be said so that they can be fixed and improved.

I am not sure if the OPENDIME hardware devices would count as an exciting project, but I like the devices a lot.  In my case I am using them as a "wealth preservation device" (BTC stored on them, and locked up!), similar to how one would use a full-blown hardware wallet like a Trezor or Ledger.

The OPENDIME is also very cheap!  :)

My reviews, the devices work very differently than the Trezor and Ledger (pages three and four):

For me (as a non-tekkie and also financially paranoid), rumor has it that Mycelium has an exciting project to automatically mix (tumble) BTC when using a future wallet of theirs.  No date yet (as far as I know).

This, IMO, is a nice thing.  Easy and gain more privacy.  I hope they do it!

Still if you are looking for superior level of anonymity then monero is probably a better choice.
I still understand need of mixing coins, but with mixing there is never ending discussion of privacy vs. money laundering.

Also we have one similar failed project already - Dark Wallet.

Just use Google to search them, I just list here the more established ones and the ones that I think have a huge positive impact on bitcoin.

There are probably many more out there ,but not all of them become succesful.

1⟫ Segregated Witness and LightningNetwork - Larger block space, which will increase the capacity of bitcoin transaction, making room for more people. And empty rooms always tend to fill up, so I expect many new users from this idea. It also fixes malleability issues, and makes 0 confirm double spend harder so we can now build instant transaction systems with greater confidence and less risk of double spend with lightning network technology. Huge project, definitely nr.1.

I like this idea. if we have larger block space, the voice of hard fork will be smaller. Lightening Network is necessary to future bitcoin mass adoption, now the speed is too slow. We need speed it up

It is just embarrassing how these hardforkers have a patience of a 5 year old. They cant even wait a few more months until this gets established, while urging for a hardfork since 2014, when we can see that it is not urgent at all.

I think SW will come out smoothly, and in 2017 we will have good developments for bitcoin.

But.....is this using side chains of BTC to accomplish this?  If so, lets say that I create a side token and use it in my network with clients.  I set a 100 BTC block size for my side chain and side network and 0 confirmations for payments.  Now, my first block fills and I have paid all that in and out on my token.  I have to, at some point, send my side token TX's to the main block chain and if my token is a 1 to 1 BTC exchange, then my 1 block would quickly throw 4 blocks at the main block chain.  Or am I thinking about this wrong?  A constant use side network with a bigger block could quickly lag down the main block chain.  Or, I could have my token at 4 to 1 and that still gets confusing.  Either way, people are spending 100 BTC and sending it in a big 4 block lump. Right?

maybe i do not get you and misunderstood, why are 100 bitcoin 4 blocks? did you confuse it with the old mining reward for a block? as far as i understand side chains take out existing bitcoins let us say a 100. then you can us these 100 bitcoin as usual and just do the transactions and confirmations on an other chain. after some time you send the 100 bitcoins back to the block chain. in total you have made 2 transactions (in and out) on the block chain. but possibly hundreds or thousands of transactions of the chain.
A->B->C->...->Y->Z->A. Where A is the block chain. imagine that you send 100 bitcoins every time. so only transactions to B and from Z are on the block chain and the whole other bunch is not. this is how you prevent spam on the block chain.

ok, i guess what i was missing was that you only have to account to the main chain twice.  i imagined that the side chain gathered say four blocks of TX and then sent them or something like that.  i assume that the side chain used in this manner will still account those TX's once per day or something and only as an overall net change from the day before.  somehow i was thinking that each TX still made it to the block chain eventually versus a simple overall change of funds in the side chain.

i still see the company at large at risk though,  say my side token is "quickpay" the way i see this service working is not that a client actively buys my quickpay token and then buys and sells through my site. instead, they deposit their BTC and my site automatically buys quickpay with their BTC, still showing their balance to them in BTC.  but, when they then buy something from outside the network, how does that work?  I promise them 0 confirmations, so i have to quickly put out enough of my tokens to pay their debt, and i have to deal with confirmations because i am dealing with the main chain, so then i have to provide the purchase, the traded currencies or whatever and they can be gone before my outside TX gets confirmed.  the only safety would be to delay their exit from my site/token.

i don't know, it is late here, what i do see is that this would all be very possible if the entire system got enclosed by the side chain.  you could trade back and forth, no delays and the only time you would have to wait is leaving the side chain, converting back to BTC.  that only works if both trading parties on on the same side chain.

Definitely seeing more traction. No need to rely on expensive middle-men like Coinbase for small amounts of buys, and without the hassle of account closure risks.

I want to thank you for this list , they are helpful projects , and unfortunately , I don't know most of them , that make me wonder , how to handle all these projects ? and how many projects we don't know ? because every day there is something new .

Just use Google to search them, I just list here the more established ones and the ones that I think have a huge positive impact on bitcoin.

There are probably many more out there ,but not all of them become succesful.

Some of them has a lot of potential to have a nice impact on Bitcoin. If the OpenBazaar become popular and stabilizing, the Bitcoin will pump.
We do need Bitcoins markets.

I am involved in a few nice projects, mainly businesses but I am hoping more and more people will sue bitcoin so eventually the price is good and solid for also long term investing although it is expensive enough at the moment and better for the sellers than the buyers.

It looks like some projects do fail, in any case keep me updated if i forgot to update something

Very slow progress, damn these projects take so long to come out and are hardly updated.

I wish more programmers would go out there and help these developers. If you are a programmer contact the project's maintainers and tel; them you want to volunteer to help.

In most cases there project are done by 1-2 people, so people go out and help!

Even though I absolutely love the idea of bitsquare and getting away from exchanges that is MASSIVELY profitable for a few people that can exit any time they feel like it; I just can't seem to enjoy looking at the order books on there.  I went ahead and installed it, and after looking around a bit, it just seemed to give me a headache looking at the pricing for a single market (i.e. 'buy bitcoin') and then doing the vice versa when you look at the other corresponding market (i.e. 'sell bitcoin'). I feel like it would be a lot better to keep the prices in "Altcoin"/BTC or USD/BTC, etc. and always compare to Bitcoin.

Is that just me?  Or is any one else getting agitated with that? I know it's a small, very nit-picky detail... but it just gets on my nerves.  Still plan on trying it out sooner or later though.

I have mixed feelings about Zcoin/Zcash, it is technically an altcoin and will be launched as such.

However the technology/protocol might be useful and might inspire people to improve privacy in cryptocurrencies.

However I have read that monero offers better privacy. I am not sure, can somebody technical explain the PRO/CONS between Zcash VS Monero?

I've read quite a few articles on the matter, and IMO, if you were to read one, I would suggest you read this article. (http://weuse.cash/2016/06/09/btc-xmr-zcash/)

If you feel inclined and wanted to read a bit further on the matter here are some other good posts I've come across on the matter:

https://blog.okturtles.com/2016/03/the-zcash-catch/

http://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/83/how-does-monero-privacy-and-security-compare-to-zcash/99#99

Figured it's best to get your information straight from the source rather than have me try to give you my interpretations.  Nonetheless, I do agree that it is useful that there has been a lot of hype surrounding zcash; mainly because of the fact it gets people understand the importance of privacy/fungibility in cryptos.

Open Bazaar is going to be so great once the upgrades are done that makes use of the Inter Planetary File System for storing the data for your online shop.  Yes, that means you can turn off your computer, no need for leaving it on just to keep your store online 24 hours a day/7 days a week.

The cool thing about IPFS is that your privacy is protected just like you would be when using Tor. Does anyone have any idea how many users there are using OB?

You mean openbazaar?

Do you realize it's P2P, that means that you host the server on your PC, and you are the client too.

Now you can probably skip the server hosting later on once dedicated hosters appear, but for now this is how it works.

which site you are asking about? if you are asking about Openbazaar then sorry but it is true. you need to download the app to use the features and for doing shopping.
Openbazaar is an desktop app and you can't create your shop at the website. I think this is because the project is very large and making one site may not good for this. but the fact is Openbazaar is a perfect source.

It's 21 INC, but i havent heard anything concrete about it yet, it was just an announcement, but nothing concrete information provided. I guess it's still theoretical, or in research.

I guess it will take a few more years until it comes out, creating microchips is not easy.

For sure it will rise and it will be a good idea to spread the good news so as to instill confidence in the mind of new bitcoin users and even those doubting Thomases out there wishing to see the downfall of bitcoin. A welcome idea of course. Price of bitcoin will definitely get boosting support from this.

but to get there it needs to become a lot more newbie/user friendly than what it is right now to be able to compete with something like ebay for instance. until then not much.

There was an article somewhere that said that 21 Inc. will pivot from a hardware maker to software. I googled to search for the article but I could not find it. Maybe it was posted on /r/bitcoin or in this forum.

What sort of "good tools" did they create? I remember the Bitcoin computer was only a raspberry PI with a node and a bootstrapped blockchain. It was a big let down.

There are so many projects where Bitcoin could be used and more and more ideas are poping up each day.
New technologies including Bitcoin are very practical to be used and experimented especialy by younger people and gives them opportunity to start something new, proof themselves and make the success.

But I believe they provided software and tools for bitcoin nodes. I am not sure what that computer was but, if not for anything , atleast developers can test their ideas on that, and in the future many great apps and ideas can grow from it.

That is still a big maybe. Also for a company that is one of the highest funded by the VC's, it is a disappointment that all they could come yp with were software and tools for nodes and a Raspberry PI Bitcoin node. That is far from the innovative tech the declared they are developing. It will not be surprising if they run out of funding and decide to shut down the company.

And I'm thinking about the megaupload but I don't know if which of those both will stand out when this project is already done and good to go. So when this is already good enough, I will try to upload my videos that I've store in my very own hard disk drive.

It seems like Segwit just doesnt want to activate.

Yes we have 25.8%, seems like the consensus if futile.

It's like when a political party wins on 50.01% majority, whereas only 20% of the voting age population went to vote, so the party only has like 10% support.

This is why democracy doesn't work, most people don't care or don't want to vote. The consensus system is crap in my opinion.

Or

More brutal pressure and chilling

Or

Compromise with BU

Or

Other than the slightly misleading title (these aren't exciting bitcoin projects, rather they are significant events in cryptocurrency) I think it is a great starter's post for newbies like me.

One very important event for me was the closure of faucetbox and ongoing attempts to find a successor. Yes, I know it isn't an event of huge impact but it is one of significance. Faucetbox was a big player in bitcoin and alt faucets. I got all my first btc/ltc/doge from it.
