Does anyone know or can reccomend the best way to store passwords? Is there a program you can use or a way to encrypt a file with all your passwords on it?

Thanks

There are good password managers that are completely free. I suggest using a search engine to search for best free password managers. Free ones like KeePass (http://keepass.info/) will come up in the results

Use DashLane. It isn't free, but it's pretty cheap - around 40$/year. This is the top between password managers. BTW here is the hint how to buy at lower cost. Register at their site and get demo for 1 month. Use it and in a few days they will send a message with huge discount (50%). You must just wait this moment ;)

Don't trust any software for passwords. You can try to write them to paper. Yes its a old style but its the safest way to store passwords for big amount of money.
Ledger is suggesting to store seed to paper too :)

The old way was to always change passwords every few months, but now research shows that the best way is to use an email accessible password keeper, like an app on your computer or browser to store all passwords that are encrypted so you never need to type in it (keylogger proof). However, lose the password and you're stuck all over again. Memory is not reliable so a paper with password printed on it is somehow the most secure. Even if stolen people won't know what it's for.

I didn't use any program to save my password. I just made only one password in all accounts like in gmail, facebook, instagram, bitcoin, etcetera so that I will never forget it. But sometime when I first time to log-in in any of my accounts using my cellphone there is a pop-up message that asked me if I want to save my password or encrypt it with google then the next time I logged in password is already read.

I've been using the avira password manager for over a year now. It generates and stores the password which I don't ever know and don't need to as I can easily get it running in any machines with just a few clicks.

Old school is always better. I do the same and change passwords every 1-2 months. And I use two factor autentification via google autentificator, sms or mail if it possible

Don't let some software handle your password. Here is a good idea for you.
1. Make a password with mix jumbled letters, special characters and numbers
Ex: kxi,#€@¥@;"¥hekw8262&# this way it's nearly imposible for the attacker to brute force this kind of password

2. Write it down on a piece of paper then hide your password.

I hope this helps.

Cheers!!

I think the best and safest way to store passwords would be to scribble it down on a piece of paper or if you have an old phone that you are not using anymore and still works, you can also store them there.

You can always create your own cipher. Just why do you need it? I think that store passwords on a flash drive or laptop that never connects to the network. Now you can buy an old laptop at the price of a new stick. Important to always use 2 factor authentication.

That is one of the least secure methods of protecting yourself! You should never (ever ever) use just one password for everything. At a minimum, divide your password needs into thee tiers, ie

Tier 1 password - most sensitive information and sites, like banking and exchanges or wallets (personally i use diff passwords for exchanges and wallets)

Tier 2 - medium sensitive sites like emails

Tier 3 - fluff sites that don't contain much info on you

So the same password for all tier 1 sites, different one for tier 2 and another one for tier 3

I stored my passwords, private keys and wallet address in my yahoo.email so that everywhere i go i could use them. Yahoo email now have 2 factors authentication in which every time you log in they will ask of your password and the pin that will send to your personal phone, if these two will not meet then it is impossible for you to open your email. This features alone is hard to guess except if you did not memorize it. Just make sure you will not accept the pop up alert requesting you to auto save the password in every computer that you will going to use.

Earlier I was of the same opinion that it is better to keep it all in the mind and somewhere on a piece of paper, until I failed this method, and then had the longest process of recovering my account. It's a big mistake to use the same or similar passwords everywhere, i mean not social network as fb or twitter, but gmail, wallets and other accounts... when it's not about 2/3/4 passwords, and not all of them you use equally often, the special program is simply necessary. I'm also looking for the safest one now, meanwhile keeping all the passwords on the cloud (temporarily). Thanks for sharing the options:)

Yes I agree with this 100%, i only use 3 password on all my account and since almost all sites will allow you to try your password three times then if you forget it you could try all three. Do not use a program or any notepad on the internet. It is actually better to write it on a piece of paper and hide it.

LastPass Password Manager https://www.lastpass.com/

You can also store private-keys, or any important data or notes !
BUT the private key should be encrypted with passphrase  (if your private-key is stolen or otherwise exposed, the balance on the wallet is safe unless the passphrase used to encrypt the wallet is guessed.)

Using the same password (or variations of the same password) for every online account is a very bad idea. If any one of your passwords gets compromised, that puts all the accounts where you've also used it at risk. For example, LinkedIn, Yahoo and Amazon all experienced security breaches in the past, so if you used the same password for one of those and your online bank or credit card accounts, then your financial accounts are also at risk. To protect yourself, you should be using a different password for every account. If you only have a handful of accounts, then you can probably remember them. However, like most people, you probably have so many accounts that you will never remember them all.

So, that means that you should write down all of your passwords. Where will you keep that list? On paper? In your computer? Ideally, you should store it in a place that protects it from getting stolen. I have no idea what's best for you. Everyone's situation, needs, and budget will be different. I recommend using KeePass. It’s free Open Source software, easy to use and very secure with 256-bit encryption. It works similar to LastPass, but keeps the password database locally instead.

You may find so many other online and technology-based ways to store passwords. But all of them are still not that safe. You know why? There is risk of getting hacked. There is a risk of your PC or laptop or phone getting destroyed, or lost, or stolen.

And the only safest is a piece of paper and pen.  ;)

I suppose a piece of paper can not be destroyed, lost or stolen? Don't be silly!
How can that be safe, for example, in the area where strangers have full access like offices or other work spaces?

That's like having a personal PIN for ATM cards written on a piece of paper in your wallet. ;D

in my opinion, there might be some way to store passwords securely and best by means of recorded password because the password can be recorded as a reserve when we forget or lose then you should be able to keep your password do not let other people know about it anything will happen to you, so if this is the case there are other ways you can change your password immediately possible. :)

Besides keeping on the paper, i would say just keep your passwords in mind. Longer passwords, different passwords would be wise.

Nothing is 100% safe mate, and you can use any software or hardware to store your passwords if you have bad luck you will lose your password. So my advice keeps your passwords in multiple locations one you lost also you will have another one to recover your funds. Use the personal pocket hard disk to store your passwords and change that file name into something else not same like as password.

the similar ones as use of ransomware of the name heart bleed/wannacry

If you mean a pc program with 1 password, you shouldn't recommend those type of things since we can't make sure if they're copying our password into their database.

The best way is preparing a paper wallet and put it on the bank vault.

Use google drive for storing it. And change the title of documents into something far from the word password so that if ever your google drive was hacked. The hacker can't easily find your password. You can share your info on your recovery email in case emergency happened. I heard a project that allow user to store important things using their app. Try visiting Pillar project. They have cool project product.

I will go for old school as well. I don't think I could trust a program for this, what if you are hacked? or, what if at some point the program fails, what would you do? If you didn't memorize it as well, you would be screwed. For example, ages ago we would all memorize most of our friends' phone numbers, but since now a days we store them in our phones there is no need for our memory to do the job, however if the phone stops working and you really to contact someone you are screwed.

For me, memory is best, but since that could fail as well, write them down in a piece of paper with a code you identify as password. Store a couple copies of these document in safe places ... and don't forget about it!

If you want ONLY to store them, I would recommend to keep them in an encrypted volume (truecrypt?).
You can still download it from GitHub. Be sure do download version 71a.
Make a backup of the file, preferable in 2 different locations.
If you want to acces the passwords daily, than this setup is no longer valid. You loose time mounting the volume and so on.

What about Firefox Sync? I use it since a few years, no troubles at all.
I still have some of my important passwords on paper in multiple locations.

Good luck.

1) Prepare an excel file, add all of the passwords you have and you will have.
2) You can use a specific password for different websites, changing it slightly may help you for example:
specific part: 12345678 (do not use it, it is mine)
change part: 1234HERE5678

for a website, get two-three letters to change part: for bitcointalk for example 1234bi5678
for facebook: 1234fa5678

this way, you will have different passwords for each website, which is safer than having same in all of them.
3) Lock your excel file with a password that you remember very well.
4) Print your passwords regularly, in case you lose that file (with cloud computing, hard to manage it, but just in case)

I myself do first 3 steps. Hope that helps.

The best and safest way to store passwords are in your head by memorization.   Memory passwords are the safest as long as you don't forget them.  Use words and number combinations that relate to your life or lifestyle and it shouldn't be too hard to memorize.

I suggest to use keepass. It is free, open source (so everyone can check that the source code is clean and secure) and easy to use.

1. Download the portable version
2. Unzip it to a new folder
3. Start the .exe, create a new datase, give the database a name.
4. Set a strong master password for the database. Use upper and lower case password with numbers and do not write it down somewhere else.
5. Now enter all your passwords, links and other secret stuff like private keys and adresses and save the databse. It is encrypted now with your master password.
6. Check that you can open your database only with your strong master password. Then copy the folder with your portable installation on several hard discs (backup) and on a USB stick to take all your stuff always with you.

Noone can access the database without the strong master password. So you should be safe should anyone steal your USB stick. And you can always run the password manager on every machine without the need of an installation. But be careful when you use it on public machines. They could be infected with a virus and log everything you do.

KeePass is probably the best it is free and it can generate passwords for you that way you do not have to create the passwords yourself, also you can protect those passwords if you encrypt them and then you will only need to remember one password instead of all the password you have, this could be a good option to store your private keys or seed words instead of writing that information in a piece of paper that can be destroyed very easily.

What? Nooo!
This is the worst advice ever. You should never use personal information even as part of your password. Avoid a password based on information easily obtained about you (like your birthday, your child or pet's name, phone number, license plate number, school name, automobile brand, or street name). Don't use a password you already use for another account, such as your bank account PIN. Instead of writing your passwords on paper where someone might find them, you can use a password manager to store them securely. If you must write it down, keep it safe away in a place only you can access. Treat it as if it were cash.

Did your friend knew that the sms you send to her is your password? If so, what if she hacked your account? I don't mean anything. I am just concerned because I think passwords are really personal so we must keep it in private. We must not trust it to anyone.

Does anyone know or can reccomend the best way to store passwords? Is there a program you can use or a way to encrypt a file with all your passwords on it?

I prefer to store your private keys and passwords in cold wallet. Cold wallet is also called paper wallet. You have to write or print multiple copies of your passwords. This is safe for me to those hackers who wants to trespass your pc.

I would suggest you to use PGP encryption and the best open source, free and simple with instructions is found here:

You can encrypt anything big or small. read instructions first or you can as well find video tutorials on YouTube for this application

There's no perfect way of storing passwords.

Passwords must be complex so they can't be cracked. But complex passwords are hard to remember, especially if one uses tens or even hundreds of complex passwords. At least it's recommended to use different password for every account. Using single password for all logins is very insecure, because if someone gets a hold of the password he can access all the accounts. Another problem with remembering passwords is one can get injured and loose memory, so it's very wise to store them somewhere else except in

Writing them on paper is good because paper is small and easily hidden so burglars can't find it. But in case of accidents like fire, earthquake or flood it's destroyed very easily. It's also inconvenient to have to go get the piece of paper with passwords from the hiding place and type passwords by hand every time one wants to login. To avoid this one could also store the passwords in browser. But that's bad because if computer/phone gets stolen or damaged, passwords can be lost forever. It's possible to store them on some cloud storage, but company that runs it can go bankrupt and shuts down storage without notice. You also have to trust administrators of the cloud storage, that they won't steal your passwords. Using passwords managers like Keepass is very useful. All the passwords are encrypted in a file. If you protect that file by a strong uncrackable password, you only have one complex password to remember. But the data or private key file can become damaged because of failing hard drive.

So there's no single good way of storing passwords. One should always choose at least two different ways of storing/backing up passwords.

Hello

Does anyone know or can reccomend the best way to store passwords? Is there a program you can use or a way to encrypt a file with all your passwords on it?

Thanks
The safest way to store your password? Your mind! No one will know what's on your mind. Keep it in your mind and the important notice on your family that you have funds(money) on your mind. You can use your laptop for keeping your secret, write it down to your notepad then save, copy into other hard drive to have a back up. It is one of the important in logging in your account.

Your best bet would be one of two things:
Like ask pointed out one of the safest ways would be to just keep all of your passwords in a notebook, nobody can hack those.

Otherwise you can also use VeraCrypt or OpenPGP to encrypt a file with all your passwords. Just beware of any keylogers on the machine any machine that you use to decrypt the file.

I use KeePass for many years, so I'd recommend this program. It's quite easy to use and you'll never loose your passwords or other sensitive data.

Most are saying write it down but I think it's probably best to make a copy just in case something happens to the original and stored somewhere away from the original.

EncfSMP is also very useful it can encrypt entire folder and everything you copy in that folder is automatically encrypted.

there are and many. but it's basically hard to steal someone's password, it needs a special technique to do it. so you do not worry too much,
not like on a television screen, so easy the hakcer steals or breaks. I dont think so. because I've studied in the field of security.

Which passwords do you need to keep safe?

Anyway, I can suggest 3 ways:

- a piece of paper, with your passwords on. For extra safety you may insert wrong characters into them, so that, even if a stranger will find it, he wouldn't be able to recover your funds.
- an encrypted file, stored in an encrypted USB, never connected to the Internet.
- your brain. This is the safest way in my opinion. Because no one can steal, crack or hack your brain... the downside is that you need to have strong memory (and I know many people who don't have it).

My suggestion is never use easy password as like your name your brother name your mother name your birthday one of the your mobile number. This is a best tips use 2 step verification . Most important way to safest is 2 step verification with your personal mobile phone.
Most of the time is easier to create a passphrase, creating a difficult password can be ideal but it can be very difficult to remember but if you create a passphrase it is going to be very difficult to guess it and at the same time it is going to be a lot easier to remember it for you, also if you feel like it and the website allows you using 2 step verification is very useful as well and it will make it harder for a hacker to get to your bitcoin.

for me classical methods are better for store passwords. i mostly prefer to write them on paper as i have 2-3 copies in different notebooks.
moreover, this helps to keep on my mind passwords after a while.

Delete your password from your local device and upload it to your mail. Like to a gmail account. This is safer and and you don't have to worry losing it.

You need to change your mail password and you need to set a authentication to access it with your phone only.

This is close to what I do. And I think it is a better way than getting a software that remembers or stores one's password. That can be dangerous even given the notoriety of hackers and scammers this day. However, I don't do the bolded. Its scary and dangerous. I don't like leaving password on phones or computers because of theft or loss.

I don't really recommend you doing this. Making an analogy with bitcoin, one of the things that make us like it and consider it safe, it's because it's decentralized. By storing your passwords in a file, even though it's encrypted, it's the same as centralizing very sensitive information. If that file ever gets hacked, you will be giving access to all your passwords, and when you discover it, it could be to late.
If you really want to stop passwords, I think a piece of paper would be the best approach, and then you should keep it in a safe place. It's exactly what people should do with seeds from bitcoin, so why not with passwords?

Also no free public wifi.

The best way to create and store passwords is by using a hardware wallet like ledger or nano s. The password(seed) is created outside of the operating system and hence is not suspectable to get hacked even if there is malware on the system you are operating. If you cannot afford a hardware wallet or do not want to buy one for any reason, I suggest paper wallets, Make sure to use a diff system to create the seed and not the one you use to study or trade crypto.

I use keepass as a password manager. It is open source and I have studied the source code. Very well designed program imho.

I don't know any of my passwords. I only generate very strong passwords with Keepass. I also can recommend the Keepass Chome Plugin, to easily enter passwords automatically without the need to store it in the browser password safe.

There are plenty of password manager. I have used keeper (for android) in the past and it was great. They have 2fa which keeps your passwords more secure than other apps. You can also put it in encrypted drive or put it in the spreadsheet, encrypt it and then put it in different places.

The safest way is to remember them  in your mind.

I think this doesn't apply for everyone , because there are some people who don't remember everything at anytime.
Maybe there are other reasons like a person may have many accounts in different websites , that case must be taken in mind too.

I would not recommend storing passwords on any service (my only exception would keeping an encrypted file on cloud storage). A strong password or 2FA won’t stop an employee or hacker who decides to check your passwords if they’re synced on a server that you don’t control. However the encrypted spreadsheet is a much better idea.

As in the quote, there are lots and lots of apps as well services were available. When we look at those services, most were completely a third party service. If unlucky we might get cheated and it's our own responsibility to keep safe our assets. You can use a file to add each and every password and save it.

Keepass is free and I didn't fully trust the free software too, when I started using it. But now I've been using it for ten years and it has never failed me. So I have full trust in Keepass. But I do double encrypt it and back it up to a cloud service. And I can't wait for decentralized online storage solutions to become mainstream. I'll be happy store my back using them.

As for crypto wallets I also have them printed on paper and on an encrypted USB drive. Access to every important account should be stored in at least two different ways to be secure.

Don't trust any software for passwords. You can try to write them to paper. Yes its a old style but its the safest way to store passwords for big amount of money.
Ledger is suggesting to store seed to paper too :)

Old school is always better. I do the same and change passwords every 1-2 months. And I use two factor autentification via google autentificator, sms or mail if it possible

I totally agree, writing in a piece of paper is the safest way to store passwords. any software program is risky. they can broke, hacked etc. but nobody can hack paper sheets  8)

I recommend you store it in a notebook/paper that only you can have access. In this way, you can easily monitor and change passwords whenever you want it. Stick to the traditional ones, just like this because if you intend to be more in trend to use software, you might end up losing all of your information, because there is always a risk in using those software. When your mind can't remember it all, use the second option which is jotting those down in a paper.

No, actually you really do not want to do that. If you were to have all of your passwords the same then if somebody were to get one of them they could access *all* of your accounts/services. Your best bet would be to use a password manager, an encrypted drive, or a paper notebook with your passwords (that should be long and each different).

Nobody can hack a paper. But it can easily get stolen or burned in a fire. And data on paper is not encrypted so anyone that gets it's hand on it gets access to your account.

No way of storing passwords is safest. Every method has it's pros and cons.

Does anyone know or can reccomend the best way to store passwords? Is there a program you can use or a way to encrypt a file with all your passwords on it?

Thanks

I stored my passwords, private keys and wallet address in my yahoo.email so that everywhere i go i could use them. Yahoo email now have 2 factors authentication in which every time you log in they will ask of your password and the pin that will send to your personal phone, if these two will not meet then it is impossible for you to open your email. This features alone is hard to guess except if you did not memorize it. Just make sure you will not accept the pop up alert requesting you to auto save the password in every computer that you will going to use.

I recommend that you shouldn't rely on apps especially software since it still have security defects and may be easily to be accessed by hackers etc. i suggest try it on your email or traditional way. Try it on a sticky note and make your own code that only you can understand, in that way if somebody tries to read it, they wouldn't get it either way.

You can try and have a document which stores all or some passwords and then have a password (which you remember) to unlock this document. Or the best way is to simply have a paper copy, but then you run the risk of losing it. Really the number 1 way is to remember them but it can be hard to remember dozens of passwords for various accounts and sites.

In the depth of my brain, I always thought what's the point of using all these password storing software, it seem that this kind of software just can be very harmful to its user, once the company goes nuts and sell all their client's data then so many people doomed, and yeah, I agree with you, never use password storing software.
But also, saving your password in notebook is not safety, try to safe it on raspberry pi, flashdisk, external hardisk, or something else.

You can store password via software, e.g. Keepass, if you have many passwords. The best way is not to store it anywhere outside your head - make a long password that's easy to remember, e.g. "no1@thisforumcanguessmypassword". If your sentence is random enough then it will be really hard to bruteforce. Making passwords that you can't remember will just require reminders that someone else can find and use.

Delete your password from your local device and upload it to your mail. Like to a gmail account. This is safer and and you don't have to worry losing it.

You need to change your mail password and you need to set a authentication to access it with your phone only.
This is very insecure, an email is always online, you could get hacked at any moment of the day, while in your computer you can only be hacked while your computer is turned on and you have access to the internet, besides even if you delete the password from your local machine most of the time the password is still there you need to secure delete it.

Always on paper!! Never trust programs and especially never use any online ones. No one can hack paper and you can store it in a safe or something. Look at the past password managers that have histories of hackers breaking in and getting passwords. Paper is the best way to protect yourself, across all the platforms. That's also why paper wallets are the best too if you're going to be doing a long airdrop or are planning on hodling for a very long time and don't want to touch the coins while having max security. Don't risk it!

The safest way to store password is to write it in an organizer. There are free encryption key out there but I it doesn't guarantee that your password is safe from hackers. They have their own way to Crack the program.

Storing your passwords online would still be likely to be hacked. IT experts that anything that is online can be hacked depending on the circumstances so it's best if you write it in a notebook.

As for me, Always store you passwords on paper. Do not always trust programs with your passwords. And never use any online ones. No one can hack your paper and you can also store it in a safe place anytime. That is why, paper wallets are the best way too in storing passwords safely.

This is something I agree, many people let themselves be blinded by new technology, but the truth is that many times an old approach is sometimes the best, hackers cannot hack your password if you write them down in a piece of paper, at that point the only thing you have to worry is if someone gets access to that paper, but you can encrypt it too or you can simply store it in a safe or you can remember the password and destroy the piece of paper.

Even on paper wallet doesnt really mean that it is already 100% safe on our side even on those kind of securing will still have the risk on losing it knowing that inks would really fade out specially on a long period of time or you might forget the password of your safe and might that paper wallet would be eaten by a mouse or even misplaced since we are talking on long term here.

For me . Im just using notepad in all my passwords. Im paste it in the notepad then hide the notepad in my pc. When i needee again the passwords , i just unhide it and the hide again to provide safety in my passwords. It think its up to you to know the best way to save your password and if you know its safe the do it. You have to trust yourself and dont give your passwords in anyone to avoid bad happenings.

I store my crypto passwords in Keepass and store it on a USB stick, whenever I need the passwords for something I just pop it in and get whatever password I need. The Keepass file has a password that I don't use anywhere else, I keep some copies of the keepass file laying around in case the USB stick breaks.

Kind of a pain in the ass (although not anymore since I very rarely add new passwords to it), but I'm really not willing to write down passwords in a notebook (although that's literally the most secure way to store them).

I use the notepad on my phone to store all my passwords since storing it in pc is not that safe as those programs might leak information about the password in the background.
Besides, I have my phone always with me so I can use it anytime and the chances of it being stolen from me is low. But if it did got stolen, I have an SD card dedicated solely to password storage and updates it every two weeks

I save my password in notepad on my computer I don't think if that safe. There is nothing safe way to store the password the most effective way to avoid hackers is always to change the password every month or every week.

Hello

Thanks

I stored all of my private keys and wallet address in my email thru gmail.com using 2FA so that whenever i go i could use my private keys safely and instantly because before you access the email it will require our passwords and codes that to be send to our cellphone device that once you dont have the code it is impossible to open your email so it is important that my passwords will properly keep in my mind and my cellphone will not be lost because both are needed to open the email. I fully trust gmail because they have already earned their good reputation.

That is right. It is safest to write down very important information such as passwords, private keys, pins, and the like. Anything saved online is not as safe as compared to writing them down on a piece of paper. Hackers can get into almost all electronic gadgets, most especially because we are using the internet. They are always lurking around.

There is always a risk in storing our passwords online or in any app. The best way is writing down in the piece of paper and keep it in a safe place. However if we are too lazy to write down then maybe in an email is still good. You can access it wherever you are. But still there will always be a risk online.

Can not be denied again that the password is very important to secure our account, the best way to make safe is to frequently change the password, do not save the password on the computer and make a password that is easy to guess.

I think the best and safest eay to store ypur password/s is to keep it on a blank sheet of paper and make it sure also that you have even three or four backup to that so that in case one of its copy is gone or you've forgot it, ypu will not be in vain in case you badly need or the password is that important to you. You can keep it on your bag, in your things but make sure make it bold to see and it should not be put in messy things it gonna be a problem or you can pin it somewhere in your home wherein you remember it the most. I just recommend this one because I know some apps out there are not really good to trust.

The safest way that I can think of is never put or store it in any pc or devices that can be hacked. For expample, you wrote in your notes that only you can access or that is hidden well inside your room or closet.

The risks are infinite, but an electrum seed has only twelve common words even if a person is not very smart the repetition of those words over and over again will make him remember that seed, so in that case you will not need to write anything in a piece of paper, of course there are risks with such a strategy but we need to find ways to combat the hackers and the ways they use to steal our coins.
