Title: Don't you wish you never had any alcohol?
Post by: picolo on September 16, 2014, 06:28:47 PM
Wouldn't your life be better? How much did you spend on alcohol? Imagine you invested this money or started a business with it?

If you never had any alcohol you would have avoided many mistakes, work harder and more easily, you would be smarter, richer, more healthy and with better friends ;)

You could think like this about most things... drink, drugs, smoking, junk food, clothes etc etc. We sadly waste a lot of money on crap.

I don't regret anything I've done because of drinking (I don't care anyway lol), I've had awesome times while drunk, and if I get to drunk to remember anything my friends will have some awesome stories to tell me next time we meet! ;D
Yeah, sure, it costs me money, but on the other hand, I better use my money to have fun rather than buying more stuff that will only make me feel empty!

just try spending an hour or two with drunks while you remain sober. you wont envy them. in fact, you will barely be able to tolerate them. drinking is a waste of time.

There's a difference between being an alcoholic drunk and having recreational drinks.

One or two drinks can help people loosen up and have a better time.

Somewhat agree.

For many countries, alcohol is expensive and zap family resources.

I only drink when I go out with friends and never to the point of intoxication. So it wouldn't be enough to start a business with it lol.
But there are people who really exaggerate, and would be better off not touching alcohol. :/

I don't drink myself, I once was with a bunch of friends and well, since we're actual lifetime friends,  i was forced to drink a bunch of cups, all i can remember from that night is a lot of noise and a lot of lights, it ruins the whole fun of anything you try to do if you're drunk, imagine you having sex with a chick with half your corpse asleep

Any alcohol is bad for your skin, heart, lever, arteries, ect. and will raise the probability that you do something stupid or take more useless risks
Drinking a lot at a party is very bad for your mental health and your brain, it raise the probability of being depressed

Alcohol and drugs are bad for your period. I'm sorry that my life has taken the path it is, to bring me to where i'm at, but i feel like God, or maybe even the "cosmic forces of the universe" set me on this road less traveled for a reason, and i turned to be ok afterall, happily drug free for 2 years!

Yes, I do wish I never had any alcohol. The only thing I may change is if I have any more. I wouldn't humblebrag that I've never had any in this tread. There are some things one just has to find out for themselves. I've made good decisions and poor ones.

Someone that is bad is obvious for some but not for others

This is why I don't ever want to step close to drinking or smoking,
I have some friends my age(unfortunately-See my profile) that smoke and drink. I instantly lose all my respect for them.
It just consumes your life slowly without you knowing it and before you know, your life is gone.

You can make your own alcohol! Extremely cheap and potentially very good tasting.
You know what? I'll give you a recipe on a drink called "Mäsk" or "Kilju". This is an extremely easy drink to make and will be about 12% alcohol (it's essentially sugar wine btw):

1L water
200g sugar
A tea spoon of dry yeast

Take a 1.5L soda bottle, clean it properly.
Pour 1L water into the bottle.
Add the sugar.
Shake the bottle until the sugar dissolves.
Add the yeast.
Shake again.
Take of the cap.
Take a balloon and put around the opening of the bottle (don't just put the cap on again, because the CO2 the yeast produces will make the bottle explode).
(If you don't have a balloon, take a small plastic bag (preferably clear and strong), press the air out of it, and tape it around the opening)
Use some tape to make sure the balloon doesn't move.

Wait until the mixture gets clear (2-4 weeks).
Use a siphon (some kind of tube that can transport liquid) to put the liquid into new bottles.

Enjoy (or more like, try not to puke, because the taste can be pretty awful)!

Optional: Buy a bottle of juice to replace the water. Just make sure there are place in the bottle for the yeast to work, so pour some of the juice out (cranberry or apple works very well (and if you use grape juice it will essentially become regular wine)).

Life is too short. We need to keep trying to uncover every aspect of it. Drinking might help with that mission. Everything is for humans after all. You just need to take responsibility for your actions.

Very interesting but it's even worse for your health than alcohol you'd buy in a store
Not really, it just becomes water with alcohol.
You see, if the yeast doesn't get enough oxygen from the air it takes it from the sugar, converting it to alcohol. The yeast then dies, when the alcohol level gets to high, and will sink to the bottom of the bottle! :)

So to be safe it is recommended not to drink the bottom of the bottle

When you get older, if you don't smoke, don't exercise and drink regularly you will most likely get fat.

I quit alcohol 8 years ago. The world has been a gradually opening present of wonders since then. Saved thousands - in fact I don't even socialise in alcohol establishments now because it's boring, topic is usually in the gutter and the conversation worsens the drunker my friends get.

Give me a coffee and a night round the campfire / out investigating any day :)

Exactly. Or, well, it's not dangerous to do so, it just tastes like shit (and will make your stomach hurt. A lot.)

It depends on the company, you can have good conversations in a place where they serve alcohol if your friends are not drunk and here to have a good conversation

Wouldn't your life be better? How much did you spend on alcohol? Imagine you invested this money or started a business with it?

If you never had any alcohol you would have avoided many mistakes, work harder and more easily, you would be smarter, richer, more healthy and with better friends ;)

This is just very naive :D You could work for some anti-alcohol agency :D life is just more complicated than that

Alcohol kills your brain cells, makes you not study and focus, is bad for your health in general and can cause depression
Non-drinking friends will be more focus on their health, sport activities, studies and succeed in their professional fields than drinkers that are less reliable and less healthy

Alcohol actually doesn't kill brain cells, it's a myth. And sure, when you're drunk it can be pretty hard to focus, but it doesn't affect your ability to do so sober.
And honestly, the most reliable and ambiguous people I know all drink.

Getting buzzed from alcohol can break down social borders and allow people to talk more freely then they normally would otherwise (can be good or bad)
Obviously different types of alcohol have different effects but I think alcohol could be good when used in moderation. If not moderated, it will knock most of your asses out or cause you to knock yourself out on a toilet bowl, passed out in your own vomit  :D   Sounds like a blast.

I'm going to say that I wouldn't be where I am today if I didn't drink.  My life is better because if it.  There are personal reasons, but it's better than it would have ever been had I not started.  I don't think about the money I've spent.  It's better that it went to alcohol then elsewhere or some other habit.  It hasn't inhibited my work ethic, I sometimes need alcohol to unwind after a stressful day, and it's helped better my social life.  I probably wouldn't have had my son either if it wasn't for alcohol, and he's the best part of my life.  I'd like to note that I don't drink as much now that I have a family.  The only draw back.....I do feel dumber.  But that could also be because I'm getting older.

It can help unwind after a long stressing day but so does running or sleeping; it can make you connect more easily with people in a party if you don't abuse it.

Well, I think it generally involves dirty socks, fruit juice boxes, and a whole lot of unintentional vinegar production - but yeah, basically. :P

Making wine at home is terribly easy and costs roughly nothing in supplies outside the actual fruit you use (assuming you're not fortunate enough to have fruits on your property or in a public place where you can pick). You can even use bread yeast if you don't want to spend extra on higher-ABV brewing or wine yeast. You can take a 2L soda bottle, or a fruit juice bottle, or a gallon jug, keep the cap very loosely closed (so at no pressure difference, there's no exchange of air, but it starts hissing at you or popping it's lid a bit once the yeast starts outputting gas) and ensure you've sterilized everything you're using (boil or freeze the fruit, use a weak bleach solution and fill the container you want to use, sloshing it around every 20m or so, then rinse thoroughly -- allegedly, hobos simply make their wine in discarded bleach containers since they're effectively sterilized already and not at a high-enough concentration to harm the yeast while having a slight anti-microbial effect on whatever nasties might try growing). That makes gross wine, though -- it needs to be filtered, preferably at least three times through a coffee filter.

Liquor is more difficult. You want to start with a filtered wine which has completely finished fermenting with wine yeast. I've successfully distilled using a large pot (with a thick, ceramic bowl floating in the center) over an electric stove with aluminum foil on top using ice on top of the foil to make the divot and encourage condensation. You simply put the wine in the large pot, turn the heat on ~medium, and check the temperature. Once the wine reaches ~172*F, dump everything from your floating ceramic bowl into the sink (it's mostly methanol) and bring the heat down until the wine temperature stabilizes at ~200*F. Keep it there for a couple hours (replenishing ice stocks as needed). Then empty whatever's left in the large pot, clean it, and dump the contents of the ceramic bowl into the large pot. Repeat this process two more times (once with liquor @ 190*F, and a last pass @ 180*F) and you should have some fairly strong alcohol. Just be prepared to get a little from a lot - similar to cheesemaking -- you start with this massive amount and you're going through multiple processes to get out the stuff you don't want. Similar to cheesemaking, good equipment is going to give you far superior results, and the ghetto pot method's a pretty shitty and cumbersome process compared to some of the stuff you can build at home or buy online (yes, you can buy little distilleries for the home, and some even work with conduction heaters).

With the end liquor, though, you can do whatever you'd like to make it into a quick, rough approximation your preferred liquor. TBH, there shouldn't be much more than a negligible amount of flavor from whatever you produced it from -- all this "vodka from [insert exotic ingredient]" bullshit is just that. You can, for example, turn rice wine to a rough version of whiskey with a mason jar and some charcoal (umm... natural charcoal -- don't use briquettes, for God's sake!) - and because you have a high amount of surface volume, you don't need to wait years for age like you would if you had a giant supply of liquor aging in traditional, giant charred barrel.

Cigarettes, similarly, can be made easily and cheaply at home, and of course, they're quite natural, too (not to say, in any way, that they're healthful). I have no idea why people are buying cigarettes at stores and gas stations these days. Use that Internet you pay for, invest ~$40 in an injection roller which lasts practically forever (alternately, some states allow you to lease time on fancy automatic rolling machines at tobacco stores, but this is an unnecessary expense and who the Hell wants to wait around in a tobacco shop with all those damned weirdos?), buy 5lbs of "pipe tobacco" and ~10 200-packs of filters, and you're good to go. It doesn't take long to get the muscle memory right to push out a few cartons of perfect cigarettes an hour, which should hopefully last an addict at least a couple weeks. :-X I actually ran the numbers on this one... it should cost significantly under $20 to make a carton of cigarettes at home, while most people are paying $40-50, or something like $80 in the particularly tax-happy states of the US.

If you're really too lazy for that biz (and I'll admit, it can be messy, but we have an unfinished basement serving almost no purpose, so whatever), you can also simply buy "little cigars" online. Ironically, "cigarette" literally means "little cigar," but legally, a "cigar" generally only needs to be wrapped in tobacco leaves (including pulverized leaves which look just like brown paper) to avoid the punitive tax rates in most states - and yes, they companies making this do put filters on these just like "real cigarettes" because the law's that fucking stupid. I'm sure there're better brands, but the only ones I've tried are here (http://windycitycigars.com/cigarillos/ohm-filtered-cigars/ohm-filtered-cigars-carton-menthol/), and they taste like shit, smoke like you're trying to suck air out of a clenched asshole.... but they're unbelievably cheap. (side-note: WCC is crazy about promo codes and clearance sales -- I've bought decent and large cigars at ~$.85/ea shipped there)

I've been doing some hobo wine (not in bleach containers though) recently (because I'm a student, I'm poor and I like alcohol lol). Some of it has actually turned out quite nice. I'm actually gonna go right now and check if my apple wine is done yet.

Yeah, Alcohol was the first drug I was addicted to. I wish there were no drugs except the ones that grow from the ground naturally..
Alcohol is not really unnatural, and it actually exist naturally in nature (thanks to naturally occurring yeast).

Alcohol is natural but a lot of natural things can be dangerous. I won't give examples as you can all come up with tens of them in a minute.

Well, I think it generally involves dirty socks, fruit juice boxes, and a whole lot of unintentional vinegar production - but yeah, basically. :P

Be careful not to hurt your health too much, maybe some very cheap wine would be a better option?

Not really, that's actually a myth. You can't accidentally make methanol (it's the "bad" alcohol that makes you blind/kills you) from fermenting.
However, the finished homemade product might not taste good though.

Sometimes illegal producers add methanol or ethylene glycol to the booze just to make more profit (since that is cheaper).
Therefore you should only buy stuff you know comes from serious vendors. However, if you make your own homemade stuff, that's not dangerous.

I've had lots of good times on alcohol and will continue to ruin myself occasionally with it. Never having a hangover probably helps.

The more time I spend around other drinkers though, the more I notice how few either drink purely for fun or behave in a reasonably acceptable manner while drunk.

I wouldn't bother if I was constantly causing trouble or felt I was dependent on it. I don't go to gatherings where booze will cause problems, which is most of them. And there's no way in hell I'd ever be in a relationship with a problem drinker.

For me it's entirely a tool for pleasure. If it ever wasn't that then I'd quit.

Yes but the risk is to damage your health or that it becomes something else than a tool for pleasure before you quit

Wine won't contain enough methanol to damage you (unless you're a full-retard drunk). The issue comes in distilling since, like ethanol, methanol has a boiling point significantly below water's boiling point (side-note: the boiling points given for ethanol, methanol, and water need to be used with a grain of salt, since the boiling point will change given the liquids are not divided up in pure forms and thus will not exactly "conform" to the boiling points for the pure substances). This is why you want to dump the alcohol as it comes up to temperature (if you're only doing one pass, you'll want to dump out a bit more at the beginning). Even though it's probably the highest-proof alcohol you'll distill in the pass, it's largely methanol -- no good. Anyone with enough knowledge to set up a still should know this. The reason why we talk about methanol not as a theoretical problem but a real problem is because the US government blinded and murdered thousands (http://www.vox.com/2014/8/8/5975605/alcohol-prohibition-poison) by requiring methanol as a pseudo-denaturuant in alcohol production as an attempt to enforce prohibition.

n 1926, the federal government increased the amount of methanol, a poisonous alcohol-based substance, required in industrial alcohols, which people at the time used to make bootleg liquor. Faced with the ongoing failure of Prohibition, the increase was intended to discourage people from drinking.

"It gives a greater warning to the drinker that he is getting hold of something that he should leave alone," a government chemist told the New York Times at the time.

A good example of supposedly good intention of the government that is harming the people; they always have a good excuse to take your freedom, haven't they?

I rarely drink these days, and even when I do, it's only one or two. I got over that feeling of loss of control, I've made many stupid decisions while like that or said some embarrassing things .

Being sober at parties, you really get a sense of how stupid people get while drinking and spotting the people that really shouldn't drink (because they get violent, depressed, etc).

Drinking an alcohol can be a pleasure but destroys your body. So does sugar, salt and basically everything I guess.

Drinking a lot while being young and outside can lead to endanger yourself badly.

I'm not much of a drinker. When I told somebody that I rarely drink just recently, he asked me if I was a vegetarian too. I'm not sure he entirely believed that I'm not. (This was at a New Year's Eve party and I think everybody but me had at least one beer.) Another funny story: I was sitting at a restaurant table with four other people who were drinking various alcoholic beverages (I think my dad had three beers) and, when it was almost time to leave, everybody was arguing about who was the least drunk. And I was just quietly sitting there with my glass of Pepsi. Of course I offered to drive home.

I actually don't drink much. I only wish I could. It's just whenever I think about my life and the general state of the world (which is like all the time - I can't NOT think about it) I find it really depressing. I've talked to plenty of people about it over the years (pretty much anyone who'll listen), but unless the world itself changes for the better (which I can't see ever happening anymore) I'm never going to feel any better. So ya, drinking myself to death doesn't seem like such a bad proposition after all, considering I believe we're all dead already. We just don't know it yet. But hey, don't mind me, since there's nothing you can do about it anyway. In fact, I suggest everyone just keep wearing their rose colored glasses. Ignorance is bliss. (Which is why I've stopped talking about it with people for the most part.)

You would if you reach the point where you need to drink everyday in order to don't suffer

Wouldn't your life be better? How much did you spend on alcohol? Imagine you invested this money or started a business with it?

If you never had any alcohol you would have avoided many mistakes, work harder and more easily, you would be smarter, richer, more healthy and with better friends ;)

Wouldnt be any better, just quit drinking, drugs or any sort of waste of money.

Just because a substance is problematic for you, doesn't mean that it is for everyone else.

In moderation I find that alcohol is beneficial to one's life (for health and social reasons).

To me it sounds like you are trying to justify your position. The fact is that no matter what choices you make in life there are always different and perhaps better ones. That does not make you "right" it only makes you a self-righteous prick that thinks he is better than other people. Enjoy that false feeling of superiority while I enjoy a nice cold beer.

I'm not sure what his intentions were for making the reply, but he's right in regards to interactions. We all know where the most alcohol is being drunk and that's when and where we socialize freely (due to its effect).
To the people saying that not drinking will save you money; that isn't really correct. While some spend their money on alcohol you're going to spend it somewhere else.                                                                     Also it's quite obvious that some people can afford it, people waste money on a lot of different things.

All things in excess is not good for you, it's what being a responsible adult is about. Weed is legal in my country, yet I do not smoke it. I play games, those can be addictive as well, actually everything can and will be  on the long run. I like alcohol, though if it would get on the market today, they would rate it as a class 1 controlled substance.

You will save money but you will spend it on something else, maybe something worse like drugs. That is individual choice you can spend your money on what you want. Nobody that doesn't drink or smoke has a lot of money because he saved the money he would give to buy alcohol or cigarettes.

Nah, there are plenty of vices besides smoking and drinking. A Starbucks habit costs just as much. When I quit smoking, I put up the money I would have spent and made the down payment on my first car with it.

Actually where I live Starbucks would be more expensive. Drinking something medium-big costs 4-5 euros and a pack of cigarettes is just under 5. However, people usually drink more than 1 coffee/whatever during the day while a pack of smokes can last more than a day easily.

Well, you'll be damned when you hear this!

I DO NOT drink alcohol. IT TASTES AWFUL! I tried about 5 times and I just could NOT, NOT EVEN to get a buzz!

The most I had at any time of those 5 was 2 glass beer bottles. Still failed head on. No buzz from that, really either.

I thought in the end. Why the hell drink. Tastes like diesel fuel or petrol and I can't like it, no matter what I do.

No, I don't have such wish. I like yo drink alcohol in the evening and sometimes earlier on holidays.

I don't drink much, 0.5 - 1 litre of beer is enough for me in general to feel good.

But I understand those who have problems with alcohol and wish they never had any alcohol, that's fair, you better never try alcohol than you have problems with it. I suggest to not drink before 20 anyway.

I absolutely agree with you!

I mean, I know that alcohol is not bad for you health if you drink in certain amounts, but people having a problem when they have to control about something, especially when it comes to alcohol. It doesn't matter if it is bear, wine or brandy, if you have control on how much you drink, you will not have problems.

Alcohol can be on the same level with the cigarettes, but the cigarettes will kill you slowly, because they need years to destroy your body and alcohol can drive your live in a wrong direction in a blink of an eye. Statistically, every year there more victims from alcohol then cigarettes. So, I think that alcohol is not a problem, people are. They don't know when to stop after the first 2-3 glasses.

Here is my advice to those who are fans of alcohol. Do more sports activities! :D

Right. Drinking alcohol limits the amount of oxygen in the body. As oxygen leaves, pathogens come in.

Rather than drinking alcohol, eat foods and drink drinks that let the body improve its oxygen intake and usage.

One good oxygenator is small amounts of the mild bleach, chlorine dioxide, when freshly made. When ingested daily, a small amount of chlorine dioxide in water will help to remove all kinds of pathogens from your body, in the same way it is used to purify water.

:)
