Title: [ANN] DriveShare - Earn money by sharing your extra hard drive space
Post by: STORJX on November 24, 2014, 11:19:15 PM

Earn money by sharing your extra hard drive space

What is DriveShare?

DriveShare (http://driveshare.org) is an easy to use client app that will allow users around the world to rent out their unused hard drive space in return for Storjcoin X (SJCX).

https://i.imgur.com/lBlLtj2.png

How does it work?

MetaDisk (http://metadisk.org) users will upload files they want to backup or share with others. To best protect your data, files are encrypted client-side on your computer before they are uploaded. Each file is split up into chunks which are first encrypted and are then distributed for storage across the Storj network, comprised of DriveShare nodes.

User Friendly - 1-Click Start
Once downloaded, the application presents a simple user interface where you can check your current balance and hard drive space statistics.
Just one click to earn money.

MIT Licence - Open-Source
DriveShare is open source software, powered by the Storj (http://storj.io/) network. You can contribute to the code development on GitHub (https://github.com/storj) or share ideas with the community on StorjTalk (https://storjtalk.org).

Cloud by the users - Power the Cloud
By sharing your hard drive, you become a member of Storj, the next-generation Cloud Storage Network, where users are always in total control of their data.

Early Access Test Groups for DriveShare Beta

We have released the Early Access Plans for the DriveShare Beta, as announced on our forum and social media. Crowdsale participants get exclusive access to early farming software and applications.

Test Group A and B will be open only to crowdsale participants. Anyone can acquire 10,000 SJCX to participate in Test Group C.

There will be 3 Test Groups:

  • Group A Crowdsale participants holding 10,000 SJCX - Not Rewarded (Late 2014)
  • Group B All participants in the crowdsale - Rewarded (Early 2015)
  • Group C Anyone holding 10,000 SJCX or more - Rewarded (Early 2015)

SJCX can be purchased at any time and be added to your address balance to be able to qualify for Test Group C. Also your original crowdsale address can be topped up to and over 10,000 SJCX to be eligible for Test Group A.

“Not Rewarded” means Group A will only be helping with testing and will not earn coins for sharing their storage. “Rewarded” means you will earn SJCX to share your free storage during beta testing (Groups B and C).

At the time of testing, make sure you use a SJCX or Bitcoin address where you control the private keys; we do not recommend using an address from an exchange. There may be a need to verify you actually own the address before you are allowed to be a tester. We are still finalizing the details and we will make more announcements when closer to the early release.

In the interest of clarity, if you have any questions or something isn’t clear please ask by posting on our Q&A on StorjTalk (https://storjtalk.org/index.php?topic=1907) and we will keep it in consideration when we get closer to release.

ICO?

We have had a crowdsale in July and raised 910 BTC. There is no ICO, Storjcoin X (SJCX) is a Counterparty asset. SJCX is locked and there will only ever be 500 million coins.

Okay I'll be the guy who asks:-

What are the legal implications of potentially having other people's illegal stuff on your own hard drive?

We can't control what users upload on our network but remember that DriveShare nodes will only host chunks of files not the entire files themselves.
These chunks are also encrypted. So you won't be hosting any illegal content per se just a meaningless chunk of 0s and 1s.
We believe that the majority of our users will use our network for personal purposes as well as businesses for their data.
Another use of our software is for developers to build their own apps and tools using Storj as their backend storage via our MetaDisk API.
If a minority uses it for, as you say, illicit purposes we don't condone it but then we don't want to be a censor either.
This is an open source project and everyone is free to use it.

Looks cool! However I'm curious if there's any estimated upload speed requirement for a certain amount of disk space? Surely a crappy upload speed won't be able to support terabytes of data.

You will be uploading/downloading very small file chunks so consider that too. Until we start the beta it's difficult to estimate requirements.
A decent home broadband connection should suffice. Test Group A will provide some good stats.

If the Burst crowd move over to this - in case this will get more profitable -  I don't think a few GB or even TB be very profitable.

They way u store file chunks and their size being kept pretty small should allow for most users to be able to host them. Of course if there is a very high demand for storage the more you have available, the more you may earn. Also very important is reliability, the more your DriveShare node is online the better the chance of it getting a contract (i.e. file chunk).

Until the beta is well underway and possibly after Test Group B, which includes rewards for sharing storage, it is difficult to estimate.
There will be a lot of feedback from users once we reach the second stage of the beta, bear with us.

Our devs are ironing out the essential components for what we want to test during the first phase.

You can have a look at the source code with instructions on how to compile it yourself here: https://github.com/Storj/downstream-farmer.
We will soon make available binaries for all major OSs, it will be very easy to use and configure.

A few more tests and some tuning and we should be on our way to the beta launch for Test group A.

To participate in Test Group A and B you need to have contributed to our crowdsale. If you have 10000 SJCX in your wallet, and are not a crowdsale contributor, then you can participate to Test Group C in early 2015. More info here: http://storj.io/earlyaccess.

Dear Storj supporters,

We are announcing the start of Test Group A. We want to be sure you understand the requirements to participate and what outcomes we expect from Test Group A.

Requirements
  • A crowdsale SJCX address where you control the private key, to be able to sign a message for ownership verification. We recommend using Counterwallet. Addresses from exchanges and sources you don’t control will not be valid.
  • A balance of 10,000 SJCX in your crowdsale address. Your original crowdsale address can be topped up to and over 10,000 SJCX to be eligible.

What outcomes do we expect from Test Group A
  • To get load testing experience and statistics on our verification nodes.
  • To get uptime statistics for farmers, which is useful data for our distribution algorithms.

Who is Test Group A for
This is our first software beta and there may be technical problems and issues. Ideally we would prefer power-users, willing to deal with the problems and give us feedback. Users not willing to go through technical issues, troubleshooting, and actively provide feedback, should participate in later test groups.
  • There will be no SJCX rewards for participants.
  • We will not be loading users' hard drives with data yet, only 100-byte test files.

Ready to Get Started?
  • Proper instructions and support will be provided at the Hangout and IRC at release time.
  • Visit the Dedicated Thread for Support and Feedback on StorjTalk (https://storjtalk.org/index.php?topic=2142.0).

Not Eligible?
  • Details on other test groups can be found on the Early Access Page (http://storj.io/earlyaccess).
  • Visit the Dedicated Thread for Early Access Questions (https://storjtalk.org/index.php?topic=1907.0).

When is the launch?
The launch will be on Saturday December 20 at 8 PM (EST). We will host a live hangout (https://plus.google.com/events/cimbcj04afv2sj0mbis90uuvuh4) and an IRC chat (http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=%23storj&uio=d4). In that event we will provide instructions and support, as well as answer questions. If there are any updates or delays we will keep you informed via social media or email.

Have a great day,
The Storj Team

Agreed, I had been looking forward to this program for a few months. I had signed up on their forums and got in on a small SJCX giveaway. Then, I get this email from them that to participate you need 10k SJCX coins, which was like 2btc or something the other day. They tried to say that to participate in the program a few month ago, you had to deposit more counterpoint currency, I complained and I got an email reply that said they wouldn't ask for money to participate. I don't mind putting in a little bit to cement a bit a commitment, but not that much invested into SJCX. Crowdsale or not, if you want people to buy in, drop that level. Maybe 100 sjcx... not 10k.  Come on guys, lower that requirement.

Sorry I was not clear,  we held a crowdsale in which 910 BTC was raised at the time 1 BTC purchased 38,500 SJCX,  The crowdsale participants have always been the ones that will get access to the software first.  To differentiate who within the crowdsale should get first access a limit of 10,000 SJCX was set to differentiate two groups of crowdsale participants.  So we have given these people the first access followed by the rest of the crowdsale participants.  Then after them we have it set up currently that Group C will be those that have supported the project by holding SJCX will be in test group C.

I so cannot wait until Storj goes live.  I'm working on acquiring some raspberry pi's with usb attached drives.  Bitcoin caught my interest because of the mining aspect.  Now there will be something that we can all do that provides a commodity that everyone will need.

Currently trying to get DriveShare working on a Raspberry Pi. Would be nice to have a low power unit handle farming.

You should take a look a Storjtalk.org, There should be a thread about Driveshare running on a Raspberry Pi.

Done!

https://storjtalk.org/index.php?topic=2206.0  A thread where we can talk about building out on Raspberry Pi.

I'm interested and have one pi and two drives ready to commit. :-)

For all those who are interested (like @knahrvorn and @mjc), the easiest way to get DriveShare up and running fast on a Raspberry Pi is following the guide published by @bitcoinplaza in this Storjtalk thread (as mentioned by @STORJX):

https://storjtalk.org/index.php?topic=2137.0

All you have to do is flash the image bitcoinplaza provided to a SD card, start up your Pi and configure as described in the post, and it works!  ;)

Soon we can all #bethecloud, regardless of the type of device we have available!

I found the write up earlier, someone posted to the thread I had made.  I did a search on the site and it didn't turn up.  It is an excellent write up.  I followed the instructions and had my own image up and running.  Then I saw that there was img file :-0 already made.

I'm Glad to see there is a growing supportive community around Storj.

During the test phases (A, B and C) there is no way to mine without having to pay for SJCX.

After the network will go live you will be able to start mining without having to pay anything.

Yeah, we all hope this will succeed! And considering the progress done so far I think we are on the wright track - it might make some sense for you to also invest in some SJCX ;) If this will be a success, we can expect for the price of SJCX to increase substantially!

Also this won't just be a cheaper way to store your files - but a much much safer and secure way!!

This is something very true to consider. If DriveShare gets popular, the price of the cryptocoin will soar. Invest invest invest! Profit is definitely to be had here. This is a great idea that definitely has a chance to succeed.

We recommend to start by using what you guys have already and do not invest in expensive hardware until we have more details on how much farming is worth.
Test Group B will give us a good idea and will allow us to have more details to share.

DriveShare is the necessary step to push our current cloud storage services and methods to the next level. An era in shared storage where the third party is no longer in charge of dictating the terms and viewing rights. Where our data is not easily accessible by third parties and their partner companies as they so choose. Hackers are kept at a distance thanks to the Bitcoin technology and the hard work put into the development of Storj and its subsequent DriveShare application.

I for one cannot wait for this to be live so that i no longer have to worry about the security of my files and the people that have access to them. Privacy is a human right and being able to share the truth of our world is another step towards freeing the people.

Cheers :)

this is a new video made by Factom showing how Sony could have avoided getting hacked, by using a combination of Factom and Storj technologies. An excellent example of the way innovation in the bitcoin space can be achieved by different projects collaborating toward shared goals rather than competing against each other!

I like this video a lot...but I'm curious because I've read of cases where bitcoin markets have been hacked (or maybe just a specific bitcoin bank?)...and it seems like there's a similarity between Storj and bitcoin, in their decentralization. I'm curious how safe it really is? I realize it's definitely the safest option we currently have, at any rate!

I second that.  With the built in redundancy, it will also be more fault tolerant.  With the Encryption where We hold our keys it will be more secure to boot.  With the integration with other projects like MAID SAFE, Meta Disk and Drive Share it will be easy to use as well.

How do you think Storj will fit into the ecosystem with the other products that may offer a similar service? MaidSafe can't be ignored - and I know both projects have been vehement that they're not competing.. but when several people are working to provide a similar service it's hard not to see them as competitors. Additionally, do you think the public will recognize the benefit of something like storj or will they cling to the old model that is flawed but easier to understand?

Bitcoin was just the leading edge of the wave.  Decentralization is the surge that is pushing the wave.   A Tsunami is coming.  Not just Stroj, Drive Share, Meta Disk, Maid Safe, but a whole suite of products will follow.  these are just the leaders in the pack.   It's about efficiency.  Create an open market for commodities and you will create efficiencies.

I can see a future when decentralized VM's will be available.  I know on my computer I could easily sell off 1 or 2 CPU and 2 to 4 gig of memory.  The drive space will be through Storj.  The user could fire up the image which is stored on Storj and run as they needed.  Then when done they simply shut it down and only pay for the time they were running.

If you offer fast, cheap and easy to use data storage, with security and encryption as an added advantage like the Storj project plans to do, I suppose people will have to.

hardware speed (cpu, ram,HDD speed) + internet bandwidth should be the main core areas to be concerned about.

If you are talking about the transfer speed of the data via USB2 you shouldn't have a problem unless you have a very high speed internet connection.
Usually data transfers are as fast as our home internet bandwidht, thus you may use also a laptop disk to farm.
But you should leave your system on day and night, if you close your computer every night you will loose the contract of the stored data in your disk, thus no storj for you :)

Can I use external storage disk via usb port to farm? What is the difference and disadvantages?
If you are talking about the transfer speed of the data via USB2 you shouldn't have a problem unless you have a very high speed internet connection.
Usually data transfers are as fast as our home internet bandwidht, thus you may use also a laptop disk to farm.
But you should leave your system on day and night, if you close your computer every night you will loose the contract of the stored data in your disk, thus no storj for you :)

May there is the possiblility that in the further development a drivespacehoster is able to offer his space only at a current timeframe of a day? That meens during a fixed frame there will be no heartneat check and he does not loose his contracts. So his PC dont have to be running all night long. Probably the customer dont need access to his data all night long?

This would not be very practical, since your "customers", i.e. the users that have shards of their data stored on your harddrive, are likely living in a completely different timezone, so what for you will be nighttime, for at least some of the users will be daytime, and they are going to demand access to their data 24/7. So if you want to shut down your computer for any significant period of time, you need to expect to lose your contracts.

In any case, if this feature would be allowed on the Storj network, and you offered limited time access contracts, I doubt many users would take you up on the offer, unless perhaps your prices were significantly lower than what other farmers offer.

There are no plans to release a DiveShare whitepaper. The Storj Whitepaper is the one you need to look at to understand more how DriveShare works.

I wish Group C let people in with fewer STORJ

Agreed, but we all know that the early adopters get the rewards while everyone else gets a benefit. As I've said elsewhere, I'm still trying to figure out if the expense is worth it.

If you bought 10K sjcx at the exchanges (rate 0.00015669), you'll need to cough up about 1.5669 BTC.

It is better to buy now , I am sure you can double that in a few months until the market gets saturated

I don't intend to be a naysayer, but people should maintain realistic judgement. I see a good chance that lots of early adopters will feel comfortable selling off their original 10,000 SJCX when the full network goes live.

That is one possible scenario, that need to be considered, yes. On the other hand, the early adopters might have a need for redundant, secure, online cloud backup too, so they might use (some of) their holdings to pay for the storage. Or only sell of part of their holdings, and keep the rest. We have no way of knowing, really. But sure, one possible scenario is price drop when storj goes live. Another possible scenario is a price increase, when people realize the full potential of the project. Compared with the market cap of other coins, storj has lots of room for increasing.

The main question remains - whether "decentralization" is really something that people value. I would not be suprised if people stay at Dropbox/Google. This is something I started to notice a while ago - people involved in crypto tend to overestimate decentralization. And crowd.. just does not care. So if there is no demand for decentralized storage - storjcoin price will go down. If there is demand - it will go up. Doesn't really matter what early adopters would do.

People might not know that decentralization is what they need, but ever since the Snowden files, people started to realise that it might not be a good idea to hand over all your data to a single company and hope for the best. Most of the people I know now say  that there is no way they are going to upload anything sensitive/personal to Dropbox without encrypting it first. As far as I know, Dropbox/Google/Amazon/Apple clouds, they all have great uptime, but when it comes to security - just see the recent hacks. Dropbox also checks the md5-s of all files users upload against a database of known "copyright infringement" cases, and if your file is on the list, they might just delete it. And if you're the lucky one with an md5 collision :) , you can argue against the deletion, I guess.

I don't believe the majority of the public is currently aware of the need for decentralization or privacy, but when they find out that it's faster and cheaper than the competitors they'll jump on without thinking twice - i.e. they'll do what's in their best interest without even being aware of it.

Yes, that's true, most general public (users) won't think too about decentralization and privacy.  But security and costs are the 2 factors that are going to drive people to start using storj(Metadisk).

New hacks are announced basically every week. Having a storage system that is encrypted and only the user has the keys, for a cheap price: that is going to be a no-brainer.

Totally. End of the day, the client-facing portion of Storj needs to be as basic as Dropbox. And I'm guessing (hoping?) that Storj being p2p means that costs should be substantially lower to the consumer, since the majority of hardware and electricity costs are are spread among the user base?

with what we've seen so far, it appears to be accessible enough, but we can only be sure of that when more people get their hands on the program. and logically, yes, the costs should be lower.

I think if the cost is a little more than current storage services, there will still be a market for this service although much smaller. If this network can provide a cheaper option then this service will take over. Even if the cost of having storage on this network is significantly higher than other services there will still be a small group of users who will continue to use this and since this is an open source and community hosted network it can adapt over time to potentially reduce cost by possibly reducing the amount of redundancy or improving the algorithm in another way to make it more efficient.

Can you please tell us how will the rewards be split among Test Group B and Test Group C?

Will the rewards be proportional to the amount of space and bandwidth shared? (in the test phases I mean)

Will the rewards be proportional to the amount of SJCX owned? (will people with more SJCX earn more during test phase B and C ?)
I believe the rewards are determined by how much hardware you have to offer. The more hardware you have to offer the more you will earn.

The reward is determined on how much space is used from the space you offer!

the shard size is currently being tested in the beta phase, among other configurations. The end users will be able to request the level of redundancy they prefer, however, I the chunk size would not be a user defined option in order to assure network efficiency and data privacy.

Exerpt from the Storj whitepaper:

"We define a standardized shard size as a byte multiple such as 8 MB or 32 MB. These are kept at pre-set sizes to dissuade any attempt to determine what is being stored. Sharding also allows large files to be more manageable as they are distributed throughout the network..."

You can find out more about the details of chunking on Storj in the whitepaper´s chapter 2 here: http://storj.io/storj.pdf

Interesting.. i always have few hundreds GB free.. is it enough to earn something? or we are talking about hundreds TB?

They way u store file chunks and their size being kept pretty small should allow for most users to be able to host them. Of course if there is a very high demand for storage the more you have available, the more you may earn. Also very important is reliability, the more your DriveShare node is online the better the chance of it getting a contract (i.e. file chunk).

This bit is interesting. I can repeat what is written in the Storj whitepaper, but I don't quite understand how this would work.
Quote
As blockchain technology improves we can use systems like Factom [9] to provide faster throughput, and Ethereum [10] to create en-forceable contracts on data storage.

Can you ELI5 (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=ELI5&defid=6022912) please?

DriveShare is borderless, as far as I can tell.

On the flip side, SJCXs value might soar if the beta is a roaring success.

Yep I think the cost of this setup should be quite less than the traditional file hosting sites, so hopefully many people will opt for this service.

I think the price $2/month/TB Not sure dough. Time will tell :)

Went through some of Shawn's posts earlier, and remember one where he mentioned that EMC charges $3k/TB for its cloud storage services.
Huge gap to play with between $2 and $3k, IMO.

Google Storage charges about $1.99/Month for 100GB and $9.99/Month for 1 TB and Amazon provides similar prices. I doubt EMC is charging that for only storage. $2 a month for 1TB would be very competitive.

There isn't a specific date for the beginning of Phase B/C or for the actual launch since it all depends on how each test phase works.  But I imagine that we will only see progress through the next few months.  The project is obviously active and the community is very participatory...I'm down for enjoying the journey...; )

Thanks for the support MemoryShock and for answering people's questions, appreciated ;)

As mentioned above the beta is currently in progress. It is a basic test for the moment. We are working on bigger test files for the next stage and possibly enabling basic file transfers.
We will make announcements for each one of the next beta stages and when we push added functionality to the current Test Group A beta.

It will be a while before we launch to the public, possibly a few more months. Impossible to have even a rough estimate at the moment.
One thing is for sure, our developers are working hard to make this happen and things or progressing well.

If anyone here has some high level coding skills (Python mainly and C++) feel free to get involved, we are always on the lookout for extra help.
The best way to get involved is to go onto our GitHub (https://github.com/storj), look around and submit a pull request or open an issue.
We don't do interviews or look at people's CVs, we look at what you can do.  :)

DriveShare Farming should be back as normal. Let us know here otherwise. Go ahead and try to connect if you are part of Test Group A.
We are still analyzing the data collected and work is in progress to add 100GB file size transfers.

Our team is thrilled to announce that Storj has been awarded as one of Black Duck’s Open Source Rookies  (https://www.blackducksoftware.com/open-source-rookies)of the Year!

We launched our beta test on December 20 of last year and expect to start scaling up during 2015.
There is a lot of attention towards our project, and we mean to live up to the expectations of our fans and supporters.
Secure, private, and decentralized cloud storage will be a hot topic in 2015, and we want Storj to be at the center of it.

We’d like to thank the community for their enthusiastic support, as well as the dedicated group of volunteers who help maintain the project.
We dedicate our Black Duck Open Source Rookies of the Year Award to each one of you.

Each year, Black Duck names ten new open source projects as their Rookies of the Year.

Our Lead Designer Tome has been working on some new Storj Stickers and they are now complete.
Find attached a zip file that contains them all as high res .jpg files (CMYK - 300dpi).
They are ready to fit the Moo.com rectangular sticker template.
We will also print a few and add them to the StorjTalk Shop!

Download the templates from here: StorjStickersTemplates.zip (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2_R_9INFlHBSWR3N3F0LWtQcnc/view?usp=sharing)

The attached templates work perfectly on Moo.com, they should work on a local site of your choice too.
  • USA: http://us.moo.com/products/stickers/
  • UK: http://uk.moo.com/products/stickers/
  • Germany: http://uk.moo.com/de/products/stickers/

  • EU: http://eu.moo.com/products/stickers/
  • Australia: http://au.moo.com/products/stickers/
  • Canada: http://ca.moo.com/products/stickers/

If you find a local printer in your country that works better and cheaper make sure to post a link.
You can also setup your own template for other people in your area who may be interested.

We are currently testing the next DriveShare release with 100GB file transfers.
A bit more testing is needed to make sure it is stable and our infrastructure can support it.

This is what the interface will look like.

Should Test Group A stop running their clients until the new version is out?   :-\

At this point...  the client doesn't run for too long before crashing...  although it does fire up again without any problems.

Meaning...  are we witnessing a transition in the network because of you simultaneously running the new version?...  are we still helping you retrieve data considering the numerous crashes or are we causing the network a problem by repeatedly dropping contracts?

thnx  :)

Edit:  Hmmm...  it stopped crashing approximately one hour after I posted the above.

We have collected the data we need as of v.0.1.5 but if people keeps testing we could collect even more.
The team is working on progressing to the next stage for Group A with added functionality, and looking forward to release an enhanced version of downstream-farmer.

You are still welcome to test but for the moment only v.0.1.5 will work with the current beta: https://github.com/Storj/downstream-farmer/releases/tag/v0.1.5.

Higher releases are for internal testing for the time being, until we are are able to scale up to the rest of Group A testers.
Our devs are working on making that happen as soon as possible.  :)
