Earn money by sharing your extra hard drive space

What is DriveShare?

DriveShare is an easy to use client app that will allow users around the world to rent out their unused hard drive space in return for Storjcoin X (SJCX).

How does it work?

MetaDisk users will upload files they want to backup or share with others. To best protect your data, files are encrypted client-side on your computer before they are uploaded. Each file is split up into chunks which are first encrypted and are then distributed for storage across the Storj network, comprised of DriveShare nodes.

User Friendly - 1-Click Start
Once downloaded, the application presents a simple user interface where you can check your current balance and hard drive space statistics.
Just one click to earn money.

MIT Licence - Open-Source
DriveShare is open source software, powered by the Storj network. You can contribute to the code development on GitHub or share ideas with the community on StorjTalk.

Cloud by the users - Power the Cloud
By sharing your hard drive, you become a member of Storj, the next-generation Cloud Storage Network, where users are always in total control of their data.

Checkout the video on our YouTube Channel: http://youtu.be/lFuflBdpAnE. An overview of early DriveShare farming by Storj Core Developer Josh Brandoff. You can follow the status of current farming tests at https://live.driveshare.org.

DriveShare GUI Demo

A little overview on how simple and easy to use DriveShare will be. We strive to make it as easy as possible for users to use our software.

Early Access Test Groups for DriveShare Beta

We have released the Early Access Plans for the DriveShare Beta, as announced on our forum and social media. Crowdsale participants get exclusive access to early farming software and applications.

Test Group A and B will be open only to crowdsale participants. Anyone can acquire 10,000 SJCX to participate in Test Group C.

There will be 3 Test Groups:

  • Group A Crowdsale participants holding 10,000 SJCX - Not Rewarded (Late 2014)
  • Group B All participants in the crowdsale - Rewarded (Early 2015)
  • Group C Anyone holding 10,000 SJCX or more - Rewarded (Early 2015)

SJCX can be purchased at any time and be added to your address balance to be able to qualify for Test Group C. Also your original crowdsale address can be topped up to and over 10,000 SJCX to be eligible for Test Group A.

“Not Rewarded” means Group A will only be helping with testing and will not earn coins for sharing their storage. “Rewarded” means you will earn SJCX to share your free storage during beta testing (Groups B and C).

At the time of testing, make sure you use a SJCX or Bitcoin address where you control the private keys; we do not recommend using an address from an exchange. There may be a need to verify you actually own the address before you are allowed to be a tester. We are still finalizing the details and we will make more announcements when closer to the early release.

In the interest of clarity, if you have any questions or something isn’t clear please ask by posting on our Q&A on StorjTalk and we will keep it in consideration when we get closer to release.

ICO?

We have had a crowdsale in July and raised 910 BTC. There is no ICO, Storjcoin X (SJCX) is a Counterparty asset. SJCX is locked and there will only ever be 500 million coins.

Okay I'll be the guy who asks:-

What are the legal implications of potentially having other people's illegal stuff on your own hard drive?

Okay I'll be the guy who asks:-

What are the legal implications of potentially having other people's illegal stuff on your own hard drive?

We can't control what users upload on our network but remember that DriveShare nodes will only host chunks of files not the entire files themselves.
These chunks are also encrypted. So you won't be hosting any illegal content per se just a meaningless chunk of 0s and 1s.
We believe that the majority of our users will use our network for personal purposes as well as businesses for their data.
Another use of our software is for developers to build their own apps and tools using Storj as their backend storage via our MetaDisk API.
If a minority uses it for, as you say, illicit purposes we don't condone it but then we don't want to be a censor either.
This is an open source project and everyone is free to use it.

Looks cool! However I'm curious if there's any estimated upload speed requirement for a certain amount of disk space? Surely a crappy upload speed won't be able to support terabytes of data.

You will be uploading/downloading very small file chunks so consider that too. Until we start the beta it's difficult to estimate requirements.
A decent home broadband connection should suffice. Test Group A will provide some good stats.

We have had several requests from our supporters for Storj Stickers Templates.
They are now available for everyone to print and are attached as .PDF files.
Thanks goes to our Lead Designer Tome.  Smiley

Feel free to use them, we are happy if you would like to promote Storj in you area.

The attached PDF templates work perfectly on Moo.com, they should work on a local site of your choice too.
Available for Download all together as .zip file on MetaDisk.

If you find a local printer in your country that works better and cheaper make sure to post a link.
You can also setup your own template for other people in your area who may be interested.

If the Burst crowd move over to this - in case this will get more profitable -  I don't think a few GB or even TB be very profitable.

They way u store file chunks and their size being kept pretty small should allow for most users to be able to host them. Of course if there is a very high demand for storage the more you have available, the more you may earn. Also very important is reliability, the more your DriveShare node is online the better the chance of it getting a contract (i.e. file chunk).
