I don't trust an arbitrary twitter guy more than the next man.  But he appears to be speculating some very bad regulation coming bitcoin's way.  At least that's how I'm reading it.  If true, then people hoarding now thinking they're getting a steal will be kicking themselves.

Wondering how he gets so many retweets/favs, first time i heard of him, not many of the big industry names follow him.  Yet he knew about bitstamp ahead of time.  Sticking with ETF positive news prediction, seems like the kinda information someone like him might have gained access to.

Just speculation, but there are tweet follower services which you can pay and they will add thousands of random followers to your account for a small price.  I mean 6k followers is decent, but its certainly nowhere near celebrity status.  There are a ton of small 'btc pumps' twitter accounts that have more than 2k each, and from the way they tweet, are probably ran by 17 year olds.

Yeah i know you can pay for followers, seen that on fiver hehe.  But favs and retweets must be trickier,  maybe check whos Favorited and retweeted to see the validity.

I had a friend that was in the same business as this scam job, pushing cpa ads through hacked or fake facebook and twitter accounts to sell acai weight loss and male supplements.  Getting retweets and faves is perhaps the easiest chore.  They have programs and scripts nowadays that do all that.

That was actually the top, then price started to go down until it reached $150 from $300.

That was actually a pretty contrarian call.

So what?  A guy famous for spamming and an $872M law suit against him for spamming makes some claims about positive news for btc this friday.  Who cares?  Positive news abounds for btc on a daily basis and yet the price continues to go down.  News doesn't matter.  News that matters is when BTC prices soar again.  Until then it's a non issue and I highly doubt that anything will happen on Friday to be 'that' news worthy or any more newsworthy than the constant stream of new merchants, new business deals etc etc etc that involve expanding usage of bitcoin.

I don´t know what you guys understand under "very big news", but Karpales having someting to do with SR is not a big news related to the bitcoin price, neither anyting related to Factom, I don´t even know this company. Such kind of news won´t have any effect on the bitcoin price. A big news would be amazon or ebay accepting bitcoin as a payment, but not what you guys are talking about.

He's not grasping at straws. It's deliberate to generate as much attention as possible. Doesn't matter whether that attention is hope or antagonism. It all amounts to the same thing according to Guerbuez's MO.

The only way someone would be hyping significant inside information is if:

[1] - it was genuine and he had been contracted to do so as part of the 'pre-launch PR' so to speak

[2] - it was part of some personal agenda that had nothing to do with the overall interests of the industry

[3] - there was some genuine leak but he's blowing it out of all proportion and it ends up in anti-climax for everybody

ALL the hype-merchant chatter in this sector to date is of type [2] or [3]. If it was (to use the cliche) Amazon announcing they were accepting Bitcoin or something, they would not use this approach because it's too seedy for a serious commercial enterprise.

Just sayin - don't expect any fireworks from this (apart from maybe a bit of red mist on the part of investors).

The Winlevosses and Adam Guerbuez appear to share a common enemy in the form of Mark Zuckerberg.

Even before he got sued, Guerbuez was carrying out adversarial operations on facebook with his mass spamming activities which earned him his $873 million dollar lawsuit.

Perhaps that raised the eyebrows of the Winklevosses and instigated some kind of common interest agenda from that point on. They may have hired him to do a bit of viral marketing in anticipation of their ETF announcement.

That at least would square because the Winklvosses are sh*t at PR - in fact they usually end up doing "reverse PR" by driving everyone out of the room with boredom at presentations. (I say that while still admiring them for their persistence and enterprise in doing the ETF project).

So hiring Guerbuez to do some silly one-man show on twitter to try and amplify the mileage out of an ETF announcement wouldn't be out of character.

Anyways, Uber is not on the Agenda list for either day 1 or 2 of BTCMiami, so we can dead this bit of news.

All they are are sponsors of the conference, and even if they did start accepting Bitcoin, price movement would be negligible.  It would go up for like a half hour, down, then level off like it normally does when any major company starts accepting it.

The guy is an attention whore. He knows bitcoin crashed and people will be excited to hear any news. Most people in this thread never heard of him, so it looks like the hype is working and he gained a lot of followers this week.

I cant imagine anything announced at a bitcoin drinking session is going to be a big deal for the price, ah well, wait and see.

Although these hypster promotions are usually nonsense, there is one scenario that crossed my mind - albeit hypothetical and a bit of fun.

[1] - as I posted previously the only way this guy could have any inside info about anything and there be no other leaks is if he was contracted by some third party

[2] - circumstances suggest that him and the Winklevosses have a common interest (or enemy at least) in the form of Mark Zuckerberg. Winkees because of historical wrangles over Facebook IP and Guerbez because of his $837 million debt handed to him by Facebook lawyers. They may have struck up a trust relationship in the last few years.

[3] - the ETF launch price filed was $20.09 per share and one share corresponds to 0.2 BTC, so that values bitcoin at about $100 (The ETF filing was done so long ago that at that time the price seemed realistic)

[4] - there is therefore some reconciliation to be done. What are the implications of launching an ETF backed by an asset valued at 2-3 times the ETF marketcap ?

a) - the Winkies would have been effectively selling their BTC at a 65% discount (if we use the price just before the recent crash)

b) - if the ETF gets over-subscribed, it has to purchase more bitcoin to balance up the shares. There are only 1 million shares backed by 200,000 BTC, so if they all get bought quickly and there isn't enough time for the ETF share price to catch up with the Bitcoin market price then the Winkies would have to go and purchase new bitcoin at a massive premium over the ETF share price to balance up the fund

[5] - SOLUTION: Crash the market just prior to launch using only a small part of the ETF holdings. That helps in 2 ways:

   a) it starts to get the Bitcoin open market price into a range where the ETF can more easily couple with it (or more cheaply from the point of view of the fund)

   b) the fund can hoover up a load more coins on the way down to pre-empt an oversubscription, plus they can recoup their costs of crashing the market at the same time

[6] - then the question arises of why they'd contract this Guerbuez guy to whip up bullish sentiment in advance of any announcement. That could be to mitigate any scorched earth syndrome from the crash and also to help prepare the ground for a subsequent market rally after the announcement

Anyway, that's just the product of my over-active imagination as applied to this little piece of mysticism. If it's nonsense, at least I had some fun making it up. The Winkies could just adjust the share price prior to launch and that would blow my theory out of the water (on the other hand, maybe there's some problem with doing that, in which case...  ;) )

Best thing to do in these cases is spread the word about how much of a piece of garbage the guy is. People are all hyped up for no reason and forget to zoom out and look at the long term charts. Well, Friday has come and gone? What's the big news?

The only reason anyone ever listened to him is because he did know about the bitstamp hack before anyone else. Now he wasted the cred he built for pretty much nothing... so I think he did expect that some news will come out of the conference, or maybe the bitlicense to be published, so he can claim that he knew about that and it never happened. So now he claims it was a ploy.. bullshit.

I didnt hear anything that was ground breaking. The usual talk about how bitcoin has potential to take over other areas of finance, banking, remittances, etc.  The need for better security, talk about multi-sig.  

Tony Gallippi of Bitpay spoke about his company, Jeff Garzik talked about the updates to bitcoin core, Brock Pierce was on a startup-VC panel (i.e. shark tank).  Paul Vernon of Cryptsy talked about his introduction to alts.

There was an interesting panel about TA on speculating bitcoin and other investments.

One of the panels on regulation mentioned a possible law (like bit license in NY) to be made by another state in 2nd to 3rd Qtr.
