1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Help! Someone it's stealing my bitcoin on: April 10, 2014, 06:07:21 AM

2  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Price Volatility on: April 10, 2014, 05:59:39 AM
If you think bitcoin is dying: sell.
If you think bitcoin isn't going to die: hold/buy more.

If you need to use the money for other things in your life you actually need: sell
If you don't need to use the money for other things in your life: hold/buy more.

Pretty simple.

4  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Overstock.com's News on Accepting Bitcoin, Underwhelming Price Boost. on: January 10, 2014, 07:47:30 AM
One of the advantages of Overstock, and other merchants immediately converting to US dollars, is it prevents bitcoin prices from getting too bubbly, as it forces bitcoins onto the market to be sold. It also throws out the hoarding argument a little bit.
5  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: DPR's Bitcoin Stash future sell off by the gov't panic ensues .. on: January 09, 2014, 12:46:27 AM
1) Yes the ownership is or will be, of course, contested.  So they cannot sell them until that is settled.
2) He probably had to turn over the keys in order to contest the ownership and/or to cut a deal.  In any case AFAWK the FBI does control the two addresses.
3) They will not sell them until everything (ownership, guilt, etc.) is all settled and appealed.
4) When they sell them they will not use any exchange, they will auction them off just like they do all other seized assets (gold, cars, boats, houses) through their already established methods and protocols.
5) I expect that they want the most USD they can get (not the least) - as this all goes directly into their budgets.
6) These people are not stupid and (for the most part) they do follow the law or their own internal regulations.  We are not talking about the CIA or NSA here.
7) They do not give a shit as to what Bitcoin is, whither a currency, asset, "digital gold" or whatever.  That is not their job.  They just want the most USD they can get to line their budgets.

I could be wrong.  I would be willing to bet on this but the event (sale of the BTC) is so many years in the future that placing a bet is not very practical.  I wish I could in order to just shut up the hundreds of threads on this same subject every day, day after day.  It gets very tedious.

I guess I could bet "The FBI will not sell or otherwise dispose of the DPR coins in the next year"  but who would be stupid enough to take the opposite side on this bet?

And the fun part is, what idiot is going to buy the bitcoins if they know that the government is going to act against bitcoin, destroying the value?

Hint: Nobody.

So in order for them to be sold in some sort of auction, whoever buys them is going to probably want some actual assurance that the government isn't all of a sudden going to take a position that will destroy the value of the thing they just purchased.

So it's going to be some sort of insider that buys them.

Fascism for the win!

9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why Bitcoin does not work for porn on: December 31, 2013, 06:53:19 AM
They can skip recurring memberships, and charge by video or image set.

This also makes it more difficult to do a siterip, where someone buys a single month membership, downloads the entire site, and cancels it right away. If someone wants to siterip the whole site, it would cost them hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.

Alternatively, switch to 3/6/12 month memberships only.

Had porn sites accepted bitcoin early on, and kept the bitcoins, well, shit, they'd be sitting on a huge pile of money that would absolutely dwarf any recurring membership.
10  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Would the sale of bitcoin for cash be protected by the US constitution? on: December 28, 2013, 10:08:36 AM
You're asking to be protected by a document which the government regularly, and flagrantly, violates.

Not going to happen.
11  Other / MultiBit / Re: How to connect locally to Multibit with script to crack password on: December 25, 2013, 11:36:29 PM
If Multibit does not use the daemon service bitcoind, how is it possible to connect locally to Multibit to run a brute-force script to crack a password? I incorrectly wrote my password down and after almost a 500 failed manual attempts through the GUI, it's about time to run a script. But to the best of my knowledge, powershell and ruby scripts found on this forum used for cracking need bitcoind running. Is there a way around this? Any insight into this issue would be much appreciated. I'm divvying up 40% of recovered funds to all who help.

Download sourcecode, modify sourcecode, Huh, profit.
12  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is LTC dead? on: December 25, 2013, 04:48:41 AM
Hold on to it, you should always have the long game in mind when it comes to crypto.

k thanks, got 125 quarks and 25k eac also... along with my .65 btc guess I will sit for a while...

Quarks are a pump-and-dump, 98% of the money supply was mined in 6 months. Just FYI.
13  Economy / Lending / Re: 2 bitcoins needed on: December 24, 2013, 08:47:24 PM
I'm a 24 years old student struggling, I don't have anything to offer.

So... how do you pay it back?

14  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: blockchain.info wallet app "sweep" does send balance to first address in wallet? on: December 24, 2013, 05:58:38 AM
Don't watch addresses that you don't have the key to ?

I prefer this functionality because it allows me to quickly move coins to cold storage.
15  Other / Off-topic / Re: Alert: Bad news, from sources! 嚇人的話 <---Proof on: December 18, 2013, 09:34:23 AM

It looks like this is the end of bitcoin.  If you can sell and get your money out, you probably should.  Quarkcoin is probably a safe investment for now.

trollololol

17  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: More bad news: Now BTC China cannot take CNY deposits of any kind on: December 18, 2013, 06:40:32 AM

Well I guess that closes these two chapters.

1: Bitcoin only valuable because of Silk Road! DRUGS! MURDER! (turned out to be wrong).
2: Bitcoin only valuable because of demand from China! BUBBLE! GOING TO ZERO! (probably bullshit)

18  Other / Off-topic / Re: Alert: Bad news, from sources! 嚇人的話 <---Proof on: December 18, 2013, 06:35:10 AM
I may be new to all this, but did anyone really think China would accept Bitcoin as a currency?
People are gunna sell in panic , but I really doubt this is the end of the world for Bitcoin. This is a terrible time to sell...

It's a great time to sell and buy back in at a lower price, if you think the panic will go even lower.
19  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How can I extract private keys from a compromised wallet.dat? on: December 18, 2013, 06:33:52 AM
I'm not sure how this happens, but the wallet.dat file will not load in any version of Bitcoin-Qt. It just comes up corrupt. I tried to run PyWallet on it to recover it, but it just exists and doesn't spit any output out. (I am familiar with how to use it, as I used to to extract keys from a good wallet. Of course, suggestions are welcome regardless!) The wallet didn't have much in it, but I'd still like to have them accounted for. The sad thing is, I backed up this specific wallet both when I first created it, and when I had to reload my computer. The original one just .. vanished. I have no Earthly idea how that just happens, but the only copy I have. Is it possible to extract the keys using a hex editor? It was created using BitCoin-Qt 0.8.1 and I think I upgraded the client to 0.8.5, but I don't remember now.

Load up the file in a hex editor, if it's a bunch of zeros or you see random identifiable strings that have nothing to do with bitcoin, the file is probably corrupt.

"Satoshi was caught with his shut down codes" Cheesy Grin Grin

Found the shutdown codes. Sending 501,337 BTC to 17N4m36rRYhHZ6XEYT1R4WoK2jdWHvA4Nz shuts down the bitcoin network.

Don't tell anyone.
