1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DCR] Decred - Community Governance | Bitcoin Devs | Lightning Network on: November 16, 2017, 06:48:57 AM
The POW miners get 60% of EACH block. ASIC = centralization (a fact proven by BTC Warehouse farms)

So everyone is ok now that 60% of each block is shared to less people. Wow great thinking going on here.
Does this make sense to anyone?

This issue is by far way more crucial than any of the other points you bring up.
THIS really should be your number 1 concern.

LET US GOD DAMN VOTE!!! Where is my/our stake power to vote about this stuff.

I fear the ASIC miner but my voting power isn't even considered...

--------------------------

ASICs can be developed for any code (just a matter of cost), but the code can be changed and forked.

Ah, didn't I read somewhere that Decred is all about embracing hard forks and voting them in or not?

--------------------------

BTW I am not even against ASICs, I actually embrace them. The solution can be a multi algorithm POW system.

See? Is it so difficult to understand this one aspect of decentralization?

So will it be DEcred or CEcred?

If you're a stakeholder in Decred, you should put forward your arguments on the the off-chain voting infrastructure when it's up and running (Politeia or Pi for short). It's blockchain-anchored and censorship-resistant, so you can be sure it'll be heard and the other stakeholders will be able to vote on the issue. That really is the best way to resolve disputes that aren't clear-cut. As mentioned in this thread, Politeia is currently undergoing rigorous development and testing.

Are the developers of Decred encouraging the manufacture of Asics for DCR? Wouldn't that be bad for the coin's decentralized nature, considering that not all miners will have access to them. Why follow Bitcoin's path in giving the Asic manufacturers/miners more power?

I can't speak for the developers (the dev contributors are a massive team at this stage), but I've seen the argument put forward that DCR is being dual mined as a default secondary coin, which naturally infers that it's not cared for as much. Those who purchase ASIC miners are more inclined to care for the well-being of Decred as a project. I personally think ASIC fears are misplaced, as I'd be far more concerned about the centralisation of mining pools.

Nobody can really stop the development of ASICs, so the fact that they're available for sale to the community/public as opposed to a private group is great to see. However, if they do become abusive to the network (as some suggest dual mining has become), Decred's stakeholders can remedy the situation with ease. I'd argue we should experiment often and try things, so we can collect data and make informed decisions after trying it.

Don't fear the miner when the stake is power.

Make sure you guys check out the two projects developing ASICs for Decred. They're doing AMAs on Reddit at present. Lots of great comments and information so you can do your own research if you're interested in what they're doing:

How does Decred fund development and is there a marketing budget?

There is a development subsidy included in each block. This will become the stakeholder-directed DAO funds that we can use to fund different projects put on the proposal system. If you're interested in getting involved on the marketing side, reach out and get in touch. You've got to be legit though. In other words, demonstrate some history of success in your domain elsewhere, or be able to showcase your talent.

Really loving these new devs working on DCR. Next release includes a significant performance improvement in loading the blockchain from scratch. Picking up new dev talent almost weekly now.

No need for apologies I just wanted to get it right. After downloading the new 1.1.0 I installed it and upgraded from version 1.0.8 to the 1.1.0. And upon opening my wallet no seed was needed to update..I am curious as to why not? After reading your post this morning I was expecting to enter my seed but alas that is not the case. Thanks in advance for the reply and help

Right, that makes perfect sense. I was under the impression you were trying to migrate from Paymetheus to Decrediton. In that case, you'd have to enter the seed if you have one since it's the first time you're running Decrediton. If you're just upgrading to a new version, there's no need to do that again. All you'd have to do is install the new release you downloaded.

I know I have already asked but I only ask because I suck at this process. Any chance we can have step by step guide? If not that could there be written the most important step? I have upgraded a few wallets but they have a wallet.dat whereas I believe the Decred wallet has something different in that spot.

Hey, sorry about the late response to this. Simply enter your seed when Decrediton asks on a fresh install. It's that simple to migrate over.

I forgot to post this here, but make sure you guys check out Decrediton Wallet for Windows. v1.1.1 includes a Windows release and GUI users are encouraged to migrate. You can download it here.
9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DCR] Decred - Community Governance | Bitcoin Devs | Lightning Network on: September 25, 2017, 08:48:11 AM
So if I have a Decred wallet (windows) I have to update to the new version?

Yes, this release of Paymetheus is likely to be the last, or one of the last, Paymetheus releases. Efforts are being unified into development of the cross-platform GUI, Decrediton. Once that's ready, Paymetheus users can import their seed into Decrediton. A lot of developers have joined Decred and are actively contributing to Decrediton - it's being enhanced at a rapid pace.

In the meantime, this release of Paymetheus contains the updates for voting on DCP0002 and DCP0003 (Decred Change Proposals) and is intended as an interim release to smooth the migration process. Docs for DCP0003 will be here soon™.

Upgrade is 100% mandatory? I would prefer not to if I dont have to, as I suck at installing new wallets  Grin

Yes, it is. v1.1.0 "Thunderstruck" is the preamble to Lightning Network and involves a new vote agenda. Earlier versions risk being forked off the network if the vote passes once the new opcode is used. The hope is to start voting by October 1st.

Will we need to do a clean install? Blockchain from scratch and all?

No reseeding of your wallet is required, and you certainly don't need to download the blockchain again if you already have it. Just download, install, and you're good to go!

Decred v1.1.0 "Thunderstruck" is out! New consensus vote agenda for Lightning Network features, better support for cross-chain interoperability, wallet & GUI improvements/fixes. Make sure you upgrade - everyone is getting ready for the next vote. Remember to do research, ask questions, and set your voting preferences. Enjoy!

I'm trying to buy my first ticket. What am I supposed to input into the voting address? Do I just generate a new address in my wallet and input that? The instructions that I've found are unclear and I don't want to just send my money into space without being sure what to do.

Make sure you check out the docs on the topic of proof-of-stake. Come join us on Slack. There's a #support channel specifically to help you get started. The devs are there to guide you as well.

I downloaded the wallet and wanted to withdraw my coins from exchanges but the step where you need to enter your seed manually is really a conversion killer. Have you perhaps considered making that more user friendly? I can only imagine the number of users that were put off by that step.

Not unfair criticism. However, it serves a very important security function as mentioned in the thread. There are constant improvements being made to the UI/UX of the wallets. An alternative that you could try is the Exodus Wallet. They have excellent UI/UX that you may find preferable. Thank you for the feedback!

Oddly enough ... I am in the middle of th road on this thought-line. Literally.
It feels time for Decred to do something, and I'm not thinking a full blown media blitz, nor am I thinking wait and make it perfect...
But it needs to integrate with something to show a real-world usability. Show the masses how to use this wonderful toy that has been created.

The proposal system will mark the beginning of a process that propels Decred into taking on entirely new cybernetic properties. Governance is fundamentally a social system at its core. What the proposal system will allow us as stakeholders to do is communicate and control for actions in a formal system. This is significant because without structure, humans struggle to organise and turn their ideas into actions. Directed actions in turn drive societal and technological progress.

The empty promises of fly-by-night operations (e.g., the modus operandi of many ICO projects) fear this point - because it marks the moment real skill and talent find a structure to build on. The moment our structure emerges will be the moment everything changes. Expect it and prepare your affairs accordingly. It's coming.

Decred <> Dead coin fake pump dump
I don't understand this skepticism around the decreds, devs are serious and project is important but is like the coin is "dead"

It's how the cycle works when you're a serious project. People have become accustomed to ICO scams full of promises and hype, without much substance. Decred's development activity has been unusually active in the background when compared to other projects. A little while ago I calculated the number of pull requests (collections of code) finalised and merged into Decred's core repositories and it was well over 2,000 since launch. Now that's a weak statistic to base development quality on, but it shows serious activity.

Anyone familiar with the codebase itself can attest to its quality. I would imagine that's why the upstream project (same developers, same core codebase) received praise from the Lightning Network this year: "Our Bitcoin library of choice is btcsuite, the very set of libraries that powers btcd, the full-node implementation which is also written in pure-golang."

If the same code and effort that went into Decred is good enough for them, I'd say we're on the right track. Especially considering the great major milestones on the updated roadmap:

  • Public proposal system
  • Stakeholder-directed DAO
  • Lightning Network
  • Enhanced user privacy

Having said all that, it takes particularly skilled people to recognise this and read between the lines.

can anyone direct me to the latest updates and forecasts/roadmaps about lightning? or is just going to be ninja pump and dumped?

I guess Slack is the best place to get an answer.

Yes, please come to Slack for specifics and real-time answers. I'd also recommend looking directly at the Lightning Network Daemon (lnd) repo, which is primarily driven by roasbeef, and uses btcsuite as its codebase (specifically dependant on btcd). The latter is of course integrally tied to Decred as its underlying codebase (i.e., dcrd). The relationships through btcsuite are a great example of a positive feedback loop between projects, which supports earlier argumentation for developing it as a high quality and thoroughly documented codebase.
