101  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: May 27, 2015, 12:58:02 PM
The price is barely moving beyond 230-240 for a while now.
I haven't known the price to be this stable in a long time.
Unsure if that's bullish or bearish in the short to medium term.
Thoughts?

Basically just waiting for sellers at this point.

Under $235 today, with futures still $1 above spot.
Fuck bitfinex... cant buy for less than 238 when the price is 235 on bitstamp...

IM USING THE WRONG EXCHANGE FML!

The arbitrage bots should even out those price differences soon. If the bots don't then traders will take advantage of it and buy from Bitstamp to sell for more on Bitfinex until the prices are level.
102  Other / Off-topic / Re: Precautions to take just in case email goes down on: May 27, 2015, 12:48:45 PM
You could use MailStore Home software which lets you archive your private email from almost any email source and search through them extremely quickly.

http://www.mailstore.com/

Regular backups to your own central archive of emails stored on your own computer is a fairly good solution.
103  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Who Is Satoshi Nakamoto? on: May 27, 2015, 12:39:36 PM
The hacker who recently attacked bitcointalk got the IP address each user registered through, and each user's last used IP address. He probably got two IP addresses used by Satoshi. Could those addresses reveal who Satoshi is if neither of them was a tor IP, or a VPN IP?
104  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A few tips to increase the anonymity of your BTC transactions on: May 27, 2015, 12:31:58 PM
There is no need to use a mixer for most bitcoiners. Just don't send all your bitcoin to 1 single address, keep funds spread out among lots of addresses and no one knows how much bitcoin you have. I obtain all my coins legally and I don't mind people tracing back my coins to an exchange, a gambling site or a faucet.

Satoshi envisioned bitcoin users to use an address only once. Receive, spend, send the change to a new address and never use that address again. If you follow this practice. There is enough anonymity.

Most exchanges only use one address for withdrawals, but you deposit to a different personal address. An alternative to mixers is depositing and withdrawing through multiple exchanges in multiple jurisdictions. It's unlikely the Americans could force a Chinese exchange to give them details of transactions, and vice versa.
105  Other / Meta / Re: Can not access my old account on: May 26, 2015, 11:04:37 PM
you should contact theymos for that, it might get in touch with you now that he is still here, checking the forum status

Who is theymos? How do I contact this person?

Theymos is the person in charge of this forum. You can contact him by viewing his profile page linked to below and selecting the link at the bottom to send him a pm. He can only recover your account if you can prove you own a bitcoin address that you previously posted here or sent in a pm to someone here.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=35

You have to use your bitcoin address to sign a message to prove you own it.
106  Other / Meta / Re: Reloading on a blank page on: May 26, 2015, 10:34:15 PM
I had the same problem earlier today but now its loading without problems for me. There must be large numbers of people simultaneously accessing the site to reset their passwords, and that might be overloading the servers and occasionally result in people loading blank pages.
107  Other / Meta / Re: About the recent server compromise on: May 26, 2015, 10:31:04 PM
Passwords are hashed with 7500 rounds of sha256crypt. This is pretty good, but certainly not beyond attack. Note that even though SHA-256 is used here, sha256crypt is different enough from Bitcoin's SHA-256d PoW algorithm that Bitcoin mining ASICs almost certainly cannot be modified to crack forum passwords.

How much does the password need to be changed, whould it be enough to change a letter or two.
Or would it be better to make a brand new long and complicated password.
Reason I ask is that it take some time to memories a long complicated password,
if only added or removing something will the learning time for the new password decrease.

no, make a fresh, and new password.

if you have issues remembering all passwords - check out KeePass 2 - it's a open source password vault. you only need one master password

Are the passwords it generates by using mouse movements for additional entropy completely random? Does it only generate pseudo random passwords without using mouse movements or anything else to collect additional entropy?
108  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should i create a new Node ? on: May 26, 2015, 10:25:28 PM
If you expect to profit from it I would say no, don't start a new node. If you are prepared to spend money to support the bitcoin network for no personal gain I would say yes, start a new node.
109  Economy / Speculation / Re: The Big Picture on: May 26, 2015, 10:21:54 PM
Why do I get the feeling its going to be in the $100 zone.

I only state on this based on the previous years around this price zone, but also peoples patience has been wearing out since some people expected too much out of bitcoin.

This has been one of the longest bear markets in bitcoin's history. Lots of people expected to make huge profits in months and after a year they gave up hope. If the bear market continues for another year increasing numbers of investors could start losing hope.
110  Economy / Speculation / Re: Critical Levels - EW analysis on: May 25, 2015, 10:34:12 PM
I missed you all Smiley Really. Itchy fingers yearning to login to bitcointalk.

Glad we're back up again.

-Someone should chart a price chart fused with bitcointalk shutdown times (ALL).

-Also, any chance of swiping contacts beyond this forum? Just in case we ever shut down again. Hangout? ANything

We could start a backup thread on reddit as a contingency plan for future downtime here. No doubt it will remain empty unless bitcointalk goes offline, but it could be useful in the future.

112  Economy / Speculation / Re: Price prediction on: May 20, 2015, 12:24:11 AM
I [think/predict/know] that bitcoin price will [rise/fall] and will settle in the $[23,000] price range in the next [5 years].  Looking at [insert some random reason] and [insert some random news story] I know I'm right.

Thanks to MF Doom for template, saved me a bit of work  Tongue

Thanks for pointing out MF Doom's template, it will come in real handy. People are already using it to make excellent predictions like the one in this quoted post.

I know that bitcoin price will rise and will settle in the $bijillion price range in the next month.  Looking at Natalie Portman's underwear I know I'm right.

In case anyone wants to quickly find the original template here it is.

Attention all price predictors! This thread template will save you a lot of time for your next price prediction thread.  Simply copy & past and fill in the blanks!

I [think/predict/know] that bitcoin price will [rise/fall] and will settle in the $[xxx] price range in the next [insert time frame].  Looking at [insert some random reason] and [insert some random news story] I know I'm right.

Feel free to insert random charts and draw green and red lines on it to prove your point!
113  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Poloniex adds margin trading but wants your profile on: May 19, 2015, 11:10:39 PM
Time to find another exchange?

Or say my name is John Doe, location Nigeria?

as long as they don't want a copy of your ID or some shit it's up to you. just give them fake data

http://i58.tinypic.com/29l1g1y.jpg

just enter fake data in step 1 and get verified so after this your daily withdraw limit will raise to $2000, level 2 also don't need any kind of your data copy.

I wouldn't do that as they might randomly select your account for an audit at some point or if some threshold is hit like account containing > 50 BTC or trying to withdraw a large amount or w/e... and if you can't come up with an ID matching your fake name they will take your monies.

Yeah, best to not add fake name to your account. They will probably end up freezing your account with the funds. Thats what other sites which require verifications do as well. Also, why are they taking this step ? Considering it isn't based in the US.

I thought it was in the US because a who.is search shows it's registered there.

114  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Did Satoshi expect Bitcoin to last this long? on: May 19, 2015, 11:01:13 PM
Yes, because the mining process was purposely designed to take a long time. Though, what is surprising is the adoption and buzz already. I expected it to be out of Star Wars....like a rebel alliance type currency.

I guess it was only a prototype designed for funny. He did not expected anything from it!

One of his famous posts states "I’m sure that in 20 years there will either be very large (bitcoin) transaction volume or no volume.".

That quote suggests he expected it to either be massive, or a flop. He made no allowance for a middle ground where Bitcoin is popular, but not massively popular.
115  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin is not digital Gold, it is digital Rhodium on: May 19, 2015, 10:51:58 PM
Like Bitcoins rhodium exhibits three properties:

It is very rare, (much) rarer than Gold
It is somewhat of a fringe investment
It is subject to hypes

And most importantly it is one of the few actual assets which exhibit wild price swings.

I find it very interesting how chaotic those are, so if you think to know what bitcoin will do next over any longer period of time: Think again Wink

Good find, although bitcoin feels just a touch more useful then Rhodium.

I disagree.

Rhodium's major use is as one of the catalysts in the three-way catalytic converters in automobiles. White gold is often plated with a thin rhodium layer to improve its appearance while sterling silver is often rhodium-plated for tarnish resistance.

Catalytic converters in automobiles are probably used considerably more than Bitcoin.

Dump on stamp?

Looks more like a wet fart, but I guess we'll have to make do. Doo-doo.

Edit: Now there's spotty underpants at finex as well

If you want wet farts then this post by afbitcoins contains a link to *The Greatest Fart he ever did*. It's bound to be more interesting than the recent price action.

.........

And in other news ...

The Greatest Fart I ever did!

117  Economy / Speculation / Re: A big crash this week! on: May 19, 2015, 08:23:17 PM
people here are in full stress it seems. with saying you have dumped your coins you hurt their feelings. i still think we'll see sub $200 so if you did dump you could buy back in cheaper.

Then I hope you'll follow your own advice and sell now, just so you can learn from it later.
IMO we'll touch 220 if the bears are lucky.

Is there a term for people who think the price will stagnate? Bears think the price will crash, bulls think the price will rally, but what do you call someone who thinks the price will stay the same?

Are such people called the stagnaters?
118  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Government and Bitcoin on: May 19, 2015, 08:16:54 PM
Bitcoin is still ethereal and mysterious to many people. Many people get their news from the press, hearing the talks about the illegal activities and the rise and crash of the price. If any acceptance is to happen it will have to be after a renewal of information.

That's true bad news travel faster then good news. People are just looking at the news that media is providing them and they just start to believe it without any research or investing their knowledge in it and Government is supporting media to do so as Govt is also against the bitcoin.

The people who publish the news rarely publish positive stories because they bore people. They publish negative stories about crime, violence and drugs because people want to read those types of stories. There are positive and negative sides to Bitcoin use, but the news is only interested in publishing stories about the negative side.
119  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin-Pizza-Day is near! 22. May! on: May 19, 2015, 08:04:17 PM
Still can't find a pizza store in my country that would gladly accept bitcoins as a form of payment. Sad But will it count on the celebration if ever I exchanged my bitcoins to fiat then buy pizza? Or that wouldn't?

I wonder if that's an exploitable gap in the market. How many orders could someone get if he advertised here offering pizza deliveries for a specific area of a country on Bitcoin pizza day? If he had transport and enough orders in a particular region he could make handsome profits. There must be Bitcoiners all over the world longing to buy pizza on Bitcoin pizza day in areas where no pizza services accept Bitcoin.
120  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why Are People So Pigheaded About Future Bitcoin Price? on: May 19, 2015, 07:56:41 PM
Perhaps you have heard the expression "buy low sell high".? I have bought at each crash and profited greatly by spending into the rally. We have been in a long term downtrend right now, so it is not as easy to see. But ever since I saw my first post saying "Bitcoin can never ever reach $1", I have ignored other people and done what I think is right.

You are right that there are no guarantees. If there were bitcoin would not be worth anything. Speculation is gambling and competition. There are always winners and losers and the winners are usually those who do their homework and pay no attention to emotion, fear, hype, or opinion.

Winners are sometimes those who get lucky. All we can do is guess when to buy and when to sell. Traders might make educated guesses after doing their homework but it all comes down to luck in the end. Sometimes what seems to be the worst trade you could make turns out to be the best decision possible because of luck.
