101  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What's the best way to create a super/meta/mother/master mnemonic seed? on: March 31, 2024, 08:27:12 AM
I understand that a 2-of-3 seems better and many people advise in favour of it.
However, I don't like it because I haven't found a way to properly backup the xpubs.
Print it?

Quote
In the 2-of-3 you need one backup of each seed phrase and one backup of each xpub.
You could do it like this:

Location 1: Seed A, xpub B
Location 2: Seed B, xpub C
Location 3: Seed C, xpub A
Or store all xpubs on each location. The drawback is that "a thief" would know your address and balance, but you add redundancy in case you can't read all characters on the paper.

Quote
I haven't found a good way to backup the xpubs. They are huge sentences of random characters, so one simple mistake can lead to money loss.
I've typed some private keys (for offline Fork recovery), and in my experience my typing is more accurate than my reading. So now I print everything in a large font, which makes it easier to distinguish between similar characters. If you make a mistake, just keep trying until you get it right.

Okay, so it sounds are comfortable with printing the xpubs. Unfortunately I am not.

I am also reluctant to store all the xpubs in the same place. I am not extra-paranoid, I just don't want to expose my addresses to the attacker for privacy reasons. Yeah, I know, no big deal, because I will find out that one of my backups was compromised in one of my regular health checks, but still, I want to avoid this.

I like BIP38 encryption.

This sounds interesting, gonna check it now. I was aware of it, but I never dived into it.
102  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What's the best way to create a super/meta/mother/master mnemonic seed? on: March 30, 2024, 05:49:40 PM
Why not 2-of-3, so you only need locations A, B and C? With this setup, 2 locations are always enough to restore your funds. With your 4 locations, having only 2 remaining locations gives a 50% chance of losing access to your funds.

Well... Look, I understand that a 2-of-3 seems better and many people advise in favour of it.

However, I don't like it because I haven't found a way to properly backup the xpubs.

For those who read this, but don't know how multisig works, you basically need all the xpubs of all the cosigners to describe the wallet, but you need part of them to sign the transaction.

So:

2-of-3 : A, B, C - You need all the xpubs and 2 of the seed phrases

2-of-2: A, A, B, B: You need all the xpubs and the 2 seed phrases.

Let's back these up.

In the 2-of-2 you need 4 backups for the seed phrases but you don't need to backup the xpubs because they can be derived from the seeds.

In the 2-of-3 you need one backup of each seed phrase and one backup of each xpub.
You could do it like this:

Location 1: Seed A, xpub B
Location 2: Seed B, xpub C
Location 3: Seed C, xpub A

You have the same redundancy, because losing one location will allow you to have the necessary pieces to unlock the wallet (all the xpubs and the 2 seeds)

But, I haven't found a good way to backup the xpubs. They are huge sentences of random characters, so one simple mistake can lead to money loss.

This is why I avoid 2-of-3.

I don't like multisig. It's not intuitive, I'd always fear I'd mess up, and it increases transaction fees.

I understand. So, without giving away your setup, what do you think is a better way to do your self-custody ?

<Snip>
I am glad that it turned out to be such an easy fix in the end that only required a fresh software installation. While we are on it, was the firmware on the device outdated anyways and you installed a new one or did you install the same version you already had on your Jade when it all went tits up?

I had the 1.0.23 version and I upgraded to 1.0.29.
It works well so far, since yesterday. I have done a full test of my personal use case. I mean, I have imported the wallet using the QR code, I have signed a transaction, I have changed the colors and the brightness, I have performed a factory reset. All good!
104  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What's the best way to create a super/meta/mother/master mnemonic seed? on: March 29, 2024, 10:03:08 PM
To be honest, the 2nd and the 4th event are my biggest fear, and I think the most likely to happen to me, objectively. The first one(robbering) comes after them. And I would put the 2 last ones at the same rank, after those 3. Because if you think you are unable to cope with that, or too much afraid of that, for me it doesn't make sense to hold critical amounts of funds in cryptocurrencies.

So your biggest fears are

  • Backup being destroyed by some unexpected event (fire, flood etc).
  • Locking yourself out because you have lost / forgotten the backup of the wallet (or a piece of the backup).

Well in this occasion you are clearly looking for a multisig wallet.
The easiest way to go about it is:

1. Generate 2 wallets (A, B) with 12 words each. Generate them offline of course.
2. Create a dual backup for each wallet. So you will have the following backups: A, A, B, B.
3. Generate a multisig vault, offline. Set it up to be a 2-of-2 multisig where the cosigners are A and B. Create the vault in watch only mode, using the xpubs of A and B.
4. Send a small amount of funds to one of the addresses. Then try to send the amount of the wallet, signing offline with both the wallets. This will essentially test the wallet
5. Fund the wallet with your funds.
6. Save the backups A, A, B, B in 4 separate locations.
7. Check the locations once or twice a year, replacing the old paper with new ones.

So, now, you have eliminated both of your fears.

1. Its highly unlikely that the backups will be destroyed at the same time due to some flood or fire. In fact even if 2 of the 4 papers get destroyed you still have a chance to recover the wallet if the backups were not from the same wallet. Even if one of the backups gets destroyed you are perfectly fine.

2. You have great redundancy with this system. The wallet is safe because there is not a single point of failure. As I said, you can lose one of the backups. It's ok. You can even lose two and still have a chance to save the situation with a bit of luck.
105  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What's the best way to create a super/meta/mother/master mnemonic seed? on: March 29, 2024, 09:27:11 PM
It's not safe enough for me, a sheet of paper can be too easily burnt, torn, erased, lost, eaten... and even with a back-up hidden in another place it's not a convenient solution for me, since I can't go to this place whenever I want, especially within few hours when I need to add a new seed.

Ok, let's narrow down the solution list. Shall we?
Firstly, can you put in order your biggest fears / threats?

  • Thief finding the backup and stealing the money.
  • Backup being destroyed by some unexpected event (fire, flood etc).
  • Locking yourself out of the wallet due to some technical error (example: not being able to re-create a multisig vault properly).
  • Locking yourself out because you have lost / forgotten the backup of the wallet (or a piece of the backup).
  • Losing funds because of a hack (brute-force, malware, keylogger etc).

Add any other threat you want.
106  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Jade DIY hardware wallet on: March 29, 2024, 08:31:49 PM
I am happy to tell you that my Jade looks ok now:

What I did, as I said above, was to re-flash the firmware using the browser.
So I went to this page: https://jadefw.blockstream.com/upgrade/fwupgrade.html (it's the same that fillippone mentioned above).
It worked perfectly, somehow...

Once again, thanks for trying to help me and thanks for all the suggestions.
107  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Jade DIY hardware wallet on: March 29, 2024, 06:28:44 PM
Did you bought the device directly from Blockstream? Or did you bought it from a reseller?

Directly from BlockStream. In general, I would never buy a device that is supposed to hold secrets from a reseller. Even if you find reputable resellers, I will always choose the original manufacturer.
108  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Jade DIY hardware wallet on: March 29, 2024, 06:12:11 PM
@apogio
Take a look at this:

I couldn't find any warranty information on Jade's website either. I did find this Jade review from January 2024, and there is a section that discusses the warranty.

The reviewer said they spoke to the Blockstream team who told them that if the Jade has any issues within the first year that can't be solved remotely or with a software update, you'll get a replacement device or a refund. They cover the return shipping within the US. For orders from outside the States, the buyer covers the shipping fees.

Hmm... thanks for the info.
The problem is, I own it for more than a year and I am also not in the US. So I need to cover the shipping fees, but also, it looks like they can't do anything for me.
Anyway, I will try to upgrade the firmware later tonight. Perhaps this issue will be solved.
109  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Jade DIY hardware wallet on: March 29, 2024, 11:00:50 AM

Yes, this is a good idea.
He tells me to follow this guide:
https://jadefw.blockstream.com/upgrade/fwupgrade.html

My thoughts are: would you relay on a faulty piece of hardware for a critical function as storing your precious coins?
If having a new device shipped to you is not such an hassle, I would avoid using that particular pice of hardware again.
Of course, having fun thinkering is part of the game, but I wouldn’t find it funny having that problem again.

Yes these thoughts are the obvious ones, I am having them myself too.
I don't use the Jade very much, so I don't really worry about using it, if I fix the issue myself.
I will follow the guide. Thanks a lot.
110  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Jade DIY hardware wallet on: March 29, 2024, 10:46:39 AM

I am summoning some Jade experts to this post.
I met them In real life, and I am forwarding this post to them.
Hopefully, they will show up (I don't even know if they have accounts here), or I will relay their observations.

EDIT: They told me to contact Blockstream, as they should send a new one.

Thank you very much my friend. You are very helpful.
I will try something tonight and if it fails I will definitely contact Blockstream.

I will try to update the OS to the latest version using the browser. I don't know if I will be able to press anything on the Jade. If yes, then I will have a chance to fix it. If not, then there is no other choice than to contact them.
111  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Jade DIY hardware wallet on: March 28, 2024, 07:04:31 PM
Can you explain more what exactly happened with your device?

Sure thing.
So I just turned it on after one month that it had been idle.
It woke up like the picture above...
I don't remember doing anything wrong, or forgetting it turned on.
As I have already said a few times, I use it in a stateless mode.
The memory is always wiped and every time I use it, I scan a QR code and load the wallet in memory for a short period.

Hello @RickDeckard.

I have updated my vote in the corresponding thread, since PytagoraZ decided to withdraw their participation. I wanted to do it anyway because I have seen some bad trust reviews on him. This is irrelevant though.

What I wanted to ask is if it's ok to change the vote, like I already did. If it's not, let me know. I guess it will be fine though.
113  Local / Ελληνικά (Greek) / Re: EU: Παράνομες οι συναλλαγές από non-custodial wallets on: March 28, 2024, 10:34:25 AM

114  Local / Ελληνικά (Greek) / Re: EU: Παράνομες οι συναλλαγές από non-custodial wallets on: March 28, 2024, 09:59:23 AM

115  Local / Ελληνικά (Greek) / Re: EU: Παράνομες οι συναλλαγές από non-custodial wallets on: March 28, 2024, 06:29:56 AM

116  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: In a discussion, you discuss! on: March 28, 2024, 06:27:40 AM

But I’m talking about the fact that one person at the beginning of the topic asks a simple question, someone answers him, and this is essentially enough, but then a series of the same thoughts follows, only in different words.

Well yeah I am not doing that, at least not intentionally.

Have you spotted this happening from people from signature campaigns? Since we are honest here, there are mainly two reasons for this:

1. Users from signature campaigns want to reach their post limit to get max payment.

2. Newbies who want to get merit and go up in ranking faster.

(3. Spammers - but this is not too common. Most of the time spammers just spam with random posts, not with answers that have already been mentioned.)
117  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Jade DIY hardware wallet on: March 27, 2024, 05:06:20 PM
What happened to it? Was it just like that when you turned it on or did you do something with it before that happened?
Everything on the screen looks inverted. I don't think it's your picture because the Jade imprint on the case looks normal.

Before you do anything, I would contact their customer support and explain everything in detail. Is the wallet still under warranty? If so, they must try to fix it for you or send you a replacement device.

Not only is it inverted, but it's also covering a small part of the screen. The other half is greyish.

I just turned it on after a month of it being idle and that's what I saw. I tried to charge it, but no luck... I will leave it open till it turns off and then I will charge again, in case it fixes.

I don't think it's under warranty. I don't care too much about it. I use it, but I can leave without it.

I just thought it was a good time to try something fancy, like installing a custom OS etc.
118  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Jade DIY hardware wallet on: March 27, 2024, 04:43:46 PM
Hi guys!

So, my Jade is officially dead, unfortunately!

I think about using the hardware to re-flash the software from Github. Do you think that's possible?

Since this topic is "Jade DIY", I thought it was the best place to ask this question.
119  Local / Ελληνικά (Greek) / Re: EU: Παράνομες οι συναλλαγές από non-custodial wallets on: March 27, 2024, 04:32:05 PM

120  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: In a discussion, you discuss! on: March 27, 2024, 04:14:39 PM
OP, thank you for the kind words. In fact, I think we all must try to discuss productively in this forum. The forum is for us. It's our place! And as such, we should focus on improving it.

But in fact, sometimes we see a hundred pages of rephrased answers that have the same meaning.

I have also spotted occasions like this... It's not very odd though. People (sometimes me included), tend to read the OP and then construct an answer without reading the previously mentioned ones.
