101  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Overview of Bitcointalk Signature-Ad Campaigns [Last update: 21-Sep-2017] on: September 24, 2017, 07:57:21 AM
I'm not sure at what point the red asterisk is normally added to a campaign, but there are some red flags over at Narbonne. Yesterday, the campaign manager said:

Spreed-sheet have been updated.Payments will be rolling out later today.

But he hasn't signed on in over a day. Participants are getting restless, especially after seeing that the funds have already left the escrow address, without anyone being paid. Undecided
102  Other / Meta / Re: Another hack? on: September 22, 2017, 09:48:16 PM
I'm not trying to spread fear or anything but I have never seen such a large amount of password reset via email before, also some accounts are waking up from a long period of inactivity. I just thought I should let you guys know, maybe you (theymos/mods) want to take a look into it: https://bitcointalk.org/seclog.php . If this is not from a recent hack, then it would make sense to see such activity now.

Is there any indication that these aren't just from the database hack in 2015? I changed my password after that happened. I'm tempted to change password and email address now after this string of account hacks. If I do so, does anyone know how long my profile will say, "This user's password was reset recently?" I feel like that message will make people not want to deal with me (and perhaps rightfully so).
103  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Is A Big Threat According To China on: September 21, 2017, 10:08:03 PM
Not only for China Bitcoin is threat but also All Countries. No governments will like it cause it is decentralized.

It can be a threat to governments' ability to assert monetary control over their populace. However, there are other considerations. Currently, most of the world is at great economic disadvantage due to the dominance of the US dollar and related global trade/investment policies. If Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies were to become accepted by the mainstream on a global level, that could significantly displace the US's control via monetary policy.

In this sense, I think that the Global South and the developing world have an interest in encouraging Bitcoin adoption. They are better off embracing a currency they cannot control than one that is rigged to lose by the US powers that be.
104  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Equifax Data Breach & BTC Discussion on: September 20, 2017, 11:40:49 PM
I think it is a shame that almost all americans were hacked with this. I did some research online but it seems that credit monitoring companies dont really help and the only thing to do is like you say place a freeze on your credit.

Not just a majority of Americans. A majority of Britons were compromised by this attack as well, as well as others. This is the problem with mass centralization of data. Who the hell thought permanently binding a unique plaintext number to each citizen was a good idea?

Financial institutions pass around our most personal information everyday like nothing. And when one of them screws up like this? You're not getting assigned a new social security number, I know that much.....

I haven't been notified about being compromised yet. I can't tell if that means that Equifax isn't notifying people, as required by law, or if I am in the clear for now.
105  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Chinese attempt to block all bitcoin transactions on: September 19, 2017, 10:56:47 PM
I think @gentlemand may be on the money once this is over https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/19th_National_Congress_of_the_Communist_Party_of_China things will get more reasonable again, not immediately and maybe not business as usual - but maybe in a more "controlled" fashion.

There's no question in my mind that these events all have to do with the CCP congress. It makes me wish that the crypto bubble could have waited until after it was done. If only Vinny Lingham could have prevented the bubble! Tongue

Bear with me while I fit my tin foil hat on. I've always wondered if the Chinese government was backing Bitmain. The recent prohibitions/shutdowns made me question that. But now I'm wondering: is the Chinese government clearing out the market for Bitmain's domination? This wouldn't be surprising given how things work in China. What used to be nationalization is now corporate partnership.
106  Economy / Exchanges / Re: WEX.nz on: September 18, 2017, 11:55:22 PM
I think 1-2years to redeem the tokens is way too long.

The tokens represented 38.21% of your holdings from BTC-e, if you sell out tokens at .55 you are getting (.55 * 38.21%) + 61.79% = 82.75% of what you held when BTC-e went down.  If you can't make back way over the 17.25% loss in less than 1-2 years, then why are you trading on a crypto exchange in the first place?

I see lots of token holders cashing out, taking the 17.25% loss and going somewhere else to make a profit.

Of course 1-2 years is way too long. But it's the same timeline that admins provided weeks before WEX even launched, so I'm not surprised to see them reiterate it. I was taken aback to see that tokens were trading at 50% of their value. Who would make such an investment at that price? The crypto markets allow traders to 2x their money in one day (altcoins or BTC with leverage). Waiting around for two years to 2x your money with WEX -- who would do such a thing?
107  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Do you think exchange in novaexchange is safe? on: September 17, 2017, 11:54:00 PM
It's safe for now, all the exchange platforms are in risk of running , hacking . They have the same chance to be hacked or to run . So my suggestion is to divide your money into several exchanges.

yes i think it's a safe platform to trade cryptocurrencies. i didn't read claims against it and as i saw, everything is smoothly running in it.

Let me point your attention to this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1606107.0

In August, they added this to their terms:
Quote
BETA Notice

Novaexchange is currently in BETA mode in production mode until further notice. The BETA tag will be removed once all known bugs are fixed and no new bugs encountered for a period of 3 weeks. While BETA tag applies things can go wrong and Novaexchange will in timely matter help the user to restore (if any) digital currencies. A trade that has gone wrong can be reversed during 48 hours of the timestamp of the trade and only as long as the currency remain on Novaexchange, once withdrawn or 48 hours has passed that transaction cannot be reversed.

Shortly after, they shut down registrations -- I think they are still shut down for like 2 weeks now. Apparently they have been under attack. This has lead them to ban a wide range of IPs, locking many people out of their accounts.

People are also complaining of withdrawals not coming through. Apparently, email confirmations are not arriving. I urge people to be careful and avoid sending any funds to this exchange until the situation becomes clearer.
108  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Do you think exchange in novaexchange is safe? on: September 16, 2017, 11:43:21 PM
I'm having a problem with Nova Exchange.  Has anyone withdrew a cryptocurrency from Nova in the last 2 days and had it processed immediately?

I deposited about 6 days ago some Eth and traded it for Bro but I have not been able to withdraw my bro and I've tried each day for 5 days. When I click to withdraw it says Success and then to check my email for the confirmation.  The issue is I don't ever get a confirmation email. I've checked spam, promotions folder, etc.  So now the transactions are still there on the Ongoing transactions page (what a stupid name!)

I'm reading good comments in this thread and hoping its not a scam exchange and that they're overworked or something. I saw this comment on the website "Some withdrawals may need manual action from Novaexchange to be processed."   In that case I could see them getting backed up.  I really want to know which crypto can I withdraw immediately from Nova...

I've read multiple similar reports -- withdrawal confirmations not being received. Some people are having trouble accessing their accounts at all due to widespread IP banning and apparent 2FA token problems on Nova's side. In the community thread in Service Discussion, one user reported that withdrawals have changed from automatic to manual for withdrawals as small as a couple bit-cents!

On one hand, this might be good news; maybe there is just a support backlog and your withdrawal is awaiting manual approval. On the other hand, there are some red flags here. At best, they seem incompetent and unable to handle basic DOS attacks.
109  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Overview of Bitcointalk Signature-Ad Campaigns [Last update: 08-Sep-2017] on: September 15, 2017, 10:04:18 PM
Just quoted once morre with corrected link.
To the preposter: It doesn't change anything, wether participants must post or not. The question is: will they get paid or not?

Edit:
Just saw a statement of them:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2179882.0

Also doesn't change my impression, that members of this forum will be (at current campaign) and were  (at previous campaign) scammed.

I was a member of the first campaign. I can confirm that I was paid for the last few days of posting. Payment was received today upon news that the campaign was closed. So, I don't believe that members of the original campaign will be / were scammed.

However, it would be preferable if they escrowed the funds for the new campaign with a known, trusted third party. Clearly, their campaigns have been mismanaged, so it's only reasonable to ask that of them.
110  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Pretty sure Coinbase is compramised somehow... on: September 14, 2017, 10:00:44 AM
Well, this is extremely strange and it does seem to suggest that their site/database has been compromised if you genuinely only signed up hours before the phishers sent you phishing emails. Otherwise, how would they be able to gain your email and know that you're a new member of coinbase?

Even if coinbase is not compromised, you should not use it.

Their lack of customer support is disgraceful and makes the experience on their site complete shit.

Coinbase is useful for a few reasons, though. For one thing, zero fees to trade on GDAX (as long as you use limit orders). For another, FDIC insurance on your USD holdings when you're waiting out a correction or bear market. They are tightly regulated and compliant, so assuming a strong password and TOTP 2FA token, I feel comfortable leaving large amounts of USD there.

This all assumes that you pay your taxes and you're okay with verifying your identity. Their KYC procedure is not what I'd call "lax" and it can be difficult if you don't have a smartphone with a good camera. They basically force you to use the mobile app or your computer's webcam.
111  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Cant believe a Tweet can cause $billions blood bath on: September 13, 2017, 09:24:15 AM
Just trying to catch up here and I see that the price of everything dropped +/- 10% overnight. To what tweet are you referring?

Probably the tweet by litecoin creator charlie lee saying he thinks news about china exchanges being shut down is correct.

People think the Jamie Dimon "fraud" comments are to blame, and maybe they partly are. But I think Jihan Wu and Charlie Lee deserve the most credit. Both came out today sounding very confident that the Chinese exchanges were about to be shut down.

Oddly enough, Charlie Lee deleted the tweet. The question is why? Was it because it was bad information? Or because he didn't want to be construed as manipulating the market with baseless rumors?
112  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Is there any creditcards with cashback in cryptocurrency on: September 12, 2017, 11:50:23 PM
My mistake. I am interested definitely in debit cards which allow me to spend money as usual but instead of shitty loyalty points or flight miles obtain some crypto currency (btc, ltc). I found only Byteball Bytes cashback program that allows it. And I am curious why any other "modern" bank couldn't do it. Why couldn't they issue a card that returns 1% but in crypto?

I don't think there are any credit/debit card bonus or loyalty programs that pay out cryptocurrency. The essential problem is that legacy banks don't deal in cryptocurrency (yet). So in order to provide such bonuses, they would literally have to buy it on the open market to pay it to customers. That's not scalable for any large bank, and it would expose them to massive volatility. They could end up losing a lot of money by offering such bonuses, if market supply dries up.

They can offer direct cash back bonuses in e.g. $ because their payment processing fees and interest rates are denominated in $. Cash back rewards just slice a bit of profits off the top and give it back to the customer.
113  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Kraken account locked, support isn't helping, what can I do? on: September 12, 2017, 09:35:32 AM
Kraken is a huge business and is receiving many requests on a daily basis, that's the negative thing about big businesses.. they don't care about one unsatisfied guy because they have another thousand who are satisfied. I'd change the exchange overall if I were you

It's more than just support backlogs. It seems that most exchanges act this way when it comes to granting access to people they worry are not really the account holders. I always considered BTC-e to be quite honorable, but the one bad thing I heard was that it was a nightmare for people trying to recover their accounts in cases like this. People would go back and forth with support for months, providing all the evidence and documentation that was asked for, but they would be stonewalled.

You won't get that much exposure here. I think you should make a thread on r/bitcoinmarkets and cross-post this. I would also advise you to tag their reddit support rep (I think there is one) but I don't know who it is.
114  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: *** BITCOIN FEES - Stop paying overpriced STUPID fees to greedy miners!! *** on: September 12, 2017, 08:37:30 AM
Let's carefully analyze how the situation has changed during the past 6-7 months time. At the beginning of this year, I remember paying around BTC0.0001 as the tx fee for most of my transactions. Back then, the exchange rates were around $1,000 per coin. And the fee was equivalent to $0.10. And after 6 months, I was paying somewhere between BTC0.0015 and BTC0.0020 as the tx fee. Considering the increase in the exchange rates, this represents a 90 times increase in the tx fee (from $0.10 to $9.00).

I agree with the OP. We need to unite against this fleecing by the miners. They've become too greedy.

A big part of the problem is that users are fleecing themselves, effectively, by paying more than necessary. I've recently had transactions confirmed which paid only a couple satoshis per byte. Congestion is actually down, and Segwit transactions are picking up, lowering fees across the board.

The other thing is that we can't look at fees in terms of fiat value. Fiat is irrelevant to the protocol; fees are built into the protocol in terms of BTC. If the market price of BTC will continue to rise in the future, you can expect fees to rise as well. I think we all better get used to that idea now. Batch payments efficiently, migrate to Segwit, and look forward to the Lightning Network and sidechains.
115  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: China bans exchangers on: September 12, 2017, 07:29:35 AM
To be honest this was already known for a while now. The reason the market dips now is because of rumors of exchanges shutting down in china. Its helping ppl getting overhyped and caused of panic sale a huge downward. Bur, Bitcoin always be king.

The last time I checked, almost all of the Chinese exchanges (such as Huobi, OKCoin and BTC China) were operating without any issue. It is just the market bears spreading false information about the exchange closure.

It's still too early to say that it's false. I suspect the report in question will not turn out to be true. But at the same time, Caixin (as one of the two or three major media outlets) doesn't usually spread false information. If that's the case, it's also possible that the story was intended by the government to discourage investment in cryptocurrencies while they figure out ICO regulations.

The major exchanges also seemed to take the alleged report very seriously in their responses on Weibo. Time will tell; I think everything will be alright, but I don't want to be baselessly optimistic, either.

117  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: China bans exchangers on: September 10, 2017, 11:29:01 AM
as long the plague called unregulated exchangers won't be cleaned, BTC won't have any chance to become mainstream. Chinesse exchangers are well known for their fake volumes.

These fake volumes stopped when the Chinese government audited the exchanges in Q1 of this year. When you look at the charts, the change is very apparent. I'm not sure what licenses might be necessary for Chinese exchanges, but e.g. Okcoin has certainly claimed that they fully comply with local regulations. Is that not true?

Bitfinex is part of this plague too. They pump fake "money " into the BTC system through their shit instrument called Tether. It's amazing how the sheep from BTC media is keeping the silence regarding to this obvious thing.

The way that Tether is seemingly being printed out of thin air is worrisome, indeed. I wonder how long this can continue.

I used bitfinex before, can you explain more about this fake money with Tether? I am starting to worry about this.

Check this out: https://coinmarketcap.com/assets/tether/

See that giant explosion in the market capitalization / circulating supply of USDT? That's Tether being printed out of thin air. But people are still treating it as 1 USDT=1USD. Sometimes, there is even a premium for USDT because it can be moved so easily. But I fear this house of cards may collapse soon...
118  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ⚡ [ANN] ⚡ DeepOnion TOR Integrated ⚡ No ICO 🚀 FREE Airdrops 🚀 9th of 40 Rounds on: September 09, 2017, 10:29:37 PM
Novaexchange no longer works, does it work for everyone?
somebody has information?

Nova is having lots of problems. I would avoid keeping any funds there for now. They changed their terms to say they are in "beta" and are not responsible for mismatched trades if the currency was already withdrawn from the site. They switched to manual withdrawals and are constantly shutting down the registration page due to attacks. It seems that people are also having 2-factor authentication problems.

What will it take to get Onions listed on Cryptopia?

When did this happen? They are saying now that they are Beta? That seems a bit strange after actively being around for at least a couple years. (maybe even more than a couple years)

what does beta mean? who gave you this information because currently the site no longer works.

Thanks

Here, "Beta" means CYA. It means they may have already been compromised and lost coins, or see major problems in their infrastructure that puts funds at risk. I am on my phone right now, I can't find their terms, but this was posted in their community thread here on Bitcointalk about a week ago:

Is this text in the T&C new? I guess it's just to cover themselves in the event of something going wrong, but it does sound kind of arbitrary.

So all trades are final........ unless the counterparty still has funds in their account. Smiley
119  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What do you think about DeepOnion? on: September 09, 2017, 10:25:35 PM
I'm personally very excited by DeeOnion : the Tor thing can seem a "marketing" feature, but if it works well it could be a huge success

I see a very high potential for this coin, it's just the beginning now

TOR by default is a nice feature. It doesn't guarantee anonymity, but it is a good base line to start from. The roadmap for Deep Onion is ambitious. If it all comes to fruition, including workable DeepSend service, then I think it has a big future.

Privacy/fungibility is the next battle for cryptocurrencies, so I think this is an important project.
