101  Economy / Speculation / Re: MintChip Vs bitcoin, the currency wars are starting... who will win? on: April 05, 2012, 02:43:17 PM
will this news effect bitcoin price?
No.  MintChip is just another inflationary currency dressed up like Bitcoin.  It's like Bitcoin only without all the things that make Bitcoin great.
Thanks, good to know it's that simple Wink

Does anyone know of an FAQ addressing basic mining questions? I thought to respond but I didn't want to do a half-assed job posting off the top of my head.

I did find this posting, "Beginner's Guide":
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=9430.0

Perhaps something like the above would make a good sticky for the top of the Mining forum.
103  Economy / Speculation / Re: Speculation Posting Guideline on: April 05, 2012, 01:00:08 AM
To complement the Forum moderation policy for Speculation, here are a few guidelines on why postings are likely to be deleted or moved.
Thank you. Up to this point there has been far too much "Time to BUY! BUY! BUY! / SELL! SELL! SELL! this rocket to moon / sewer missile" posting content here. It's evident that most of the folks doing this simply aren't aware of how lame and ridiculous they appear to be when they do this, perhaps because they think they have invented something new.

Set the clock back 15 years, to the time when the internet/tech bubble was building. Crappy and useless investment discussion boards like Yahoo and Raging Bull are incredibly popular. Mouth-breathing halfwits posting junk like "James Cramer is a Investment God", "Gate's deal with the Devil guarantees Microsoft going to $1000/share", "Buy XXXY! People will not be able to live without their Internet enabled snowboards", etc are the rule for at least 95% of postings.

It didn't take long for reasonable people to recognize that these venues were a waste of time unless your idea of time well spent was trolling retards and wannabee amateur confidence artists.

Back then there actually was one pretty good investment board, Silicon Investor, moderation was the rule and the speed with which spam accounts disappeared was such that they were often kicked on the first post. It was actually a good place to go with a few very notable posters, for example, the once notorious short seller "Mr. Pink". Unfortunately, that was then, now Silicon Investor is a dying collection of increasingly senile old farts pissing and moaning about a changing world. Yahoo message boards are still total crap, and I'm not even going to bother to see if Raging Fool is still in operation.

I'm 110% for the policies you have stated and note that they have been effective in a much larger universe of financial discussion. Once again, thank you.

104  Economy / Speculation / Re: how much will take to squeeze this ? on: April 04, 2012, 06:40:05 PM
someone made a buy order on bitcoinica  for 9000 bitcoin -i did see that order a bit above- at $4,97 base price that means about 4.95 mtgox price
squeezing 9000 bitcoins is a awesome opportunity

Define squeeze.

If the price is taken low enough, Mr. 9000 will either cut his losses, or if taken even lower, he will be force liquidated.
Thanks, that's what I got from reading the rest of the thread.

He's right though, it isn't looking good short term.
Why? Looking pretty neutral to me.

You're forgetting that neutral usually means down.
Maybe. You going bearish again? Tongue

I'm neutral.   Grin  I haven't made any trades in a few weeks.  I'm proud of myself (me, not that other guy myself).
IMO, flat is the way to be at the moment. If your holdings are in bitcoin not USD, you can easily hedge an overall neutral position by shorting your bitcoin balance at Bitcoinica and earn swap while you do.

I also have a couple limit orders far from the current price on either side, waiting for what seems to be the inevitable nearly instantaneous gap either way that characterizes bitcoin price movement.

We shall see what we shall see. Good luck to all.

A decent read in that it does present divergent opinions on the viability of Bitcoin and mentions the possibility of alternatives appearing. It is refreshing to see such even-handed coverage.
110  Other / Off-topic / Re: Atlas / Immanuel Go / Ragnar / ALPHA. / Boss / Jon on: April 02, 2012, 02:32:53 AM
The kid is incredibly naive and parochial, no question of that. Five or ten years of being broke and lacking the social connections to do anything about it would be nothing but a character building experience for him, let's hope he gets it.

That aside, the fact that one of his ids here, Jon, has posted 680+ times here since 2/6/11 and actually paid to do it is so entirely pathetic that it crosses right into the zone of being almost too fucking funny to describe.

Can we keep him for a pet? Perhaps we can teach him to bite the head off live chickens  Wink

113  Economy / Speculation / Re: bitcoinica parallel command bot on: February 03, 2012, 03:01:16 AM
You forgot the "0 btc - I don't care" option.
the poll is for ppl who care, by default ppl how dont care are ignored
... and then you require a vote to see the results, which might be why you have so many "over 100" choices.

Yeah, why did you cut the bidding off at 100?  Wink
114  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Map Makers Admit Mistake in Showing Ice Cap Loss in Greenland on: February 01, 2012, 02:09:41 AM
The human animal tries to separate itself from nature, and it is only in the context of this separation does the concept of something being "man made" even exist.

It's all natural, including the man-made part, and including the natural selection part. Humans will inevitably bump up against natural limitations they will not surmount just as obliviously as do other species. A sterilized planet is just a clean slate from an evolutionary perspective, it wouldn't last forever if it did occur.

That's the silver lining. When it comes to the earth, we may as well poke it before it's cold and see how that works out, no?

Calculus is powerful, and I've likely known about it longer than you've been alive.  But you know what determines bitcoin price at this stage in the game?  Big players /manipulatorS, with $50k+ BTC/$250k+ USD, and when they choose to enter or exit the market.  Predict what they're going to do, and you'll know where the game is headed.  Your charts have more in common with tea leaves than with a predictive model of bitcoin prices.

I got my bachelor's in mathematics over 30 years ago, along with another in economics with a concentration in quantitative methods. Grad school was EE with a concentration in computer science, I never finished it as I was concurrently working in the financial services industry and suddenly found myself busy being buried in money, or so it seemed at the time. No problem is ever completely solved  Wink

Calculus is great, linear algebra is really cool, I had a knack for abstract algebra, and I found probability, stats, and game theory very stimulating because it was often counterintuitive at the start.

What I learned on the job was the importance of marketing and social engineering. I got to observe a great deal of it, as well as participate. When it comes to investments and speculation, the fact of the matter is that there are quite a few standard "plays" around, particularly for a 500 pound gorilla, and it doesn't always have to be just a smash and grab deal either.

I'm not going to reiterate points I've made previously about market capitalization, the promotional cycle of an investment, etc. I'm not going to point to the Hunt brothers manipulation of the silver market, the selling of "Japan Inc" in the 1980s, or the dozens of small cap scams I studied in the 1990s when I took an interest in the behavioral psychology of fraud in the financial markets, nor will I regale the board with first hand tales of the madness of crowds during the real estate lending boom/bust of the first decade of the 21st century.

IMO, bitcoin is not a good fit for a purely quantitative/technical approach. A post I never made here a few weeks ago was in response to a thread asking "If you were the manipulator, what would you do next?". One possibility that crossed my mind was to start a technical analysis thread in an attempt to gain adherents, a block of votes in the market if you will. It's a lot easier to lead lambs to slaughter if you get them to follow you first. I lack the inclination to do so myself, I don't do much other than write equity options for income these days, but the idea seemed like a natural.

ppl who started long at 6 should buy more at this price to decrease their base price and on same time deposit more USD/BTC

Yeah, do that.

Israel is quite legitimate. It was approved as a country by the UN and is allowed to exist. The fact that it was repeatedly attacked by third parys does not change that.

I always thought that Britain was very savvy in dumping the colonial burden of Palestine before it became the problem it is today. The U.N. never had any authority to do what it did other than that which came from the guns of the western colonial powers. It certainly never was selected by the residents of Palestine as their representative.

I recall seeing an interview with Dean Rusk who was present at the U.N. during the colonialist handover of Palestine to a group of European opportunists. In the interview he made that point that the U.N. was crawling with lawyers representing the colonials but there was no such representation of the current natives of the region being appropriated. Funny how that worked.

Israel will go the way of Rhodesia, South Africa, Vietnam, and many others, whether it be the hard way or the not so hard way. In 2009 the US CIA projected this to take place in the next 20 years barring material changes in the policy of Israel towards the locals who have been ground under its heel for over sixty years.

Wow you really are the first one to make this point. I'm sure you've changed the minds of many people and started a snowball effect of change.

maybe for a lot of people here, this is their first experience trading and it's obvious during some of the non-manipulated price swings that there is some serious panic buying/selling going on.

are you patronizing me for presenting good advice in a relatively novel way? patience is important.

Evidently, for some people here, manipulative promotion and trading of a microcap issue is wholly outside of their experience. Observing that bitcoin presents a sterling opportunity to practice such well-known scheming must be motivated by sour grapes over a trading loss, paranoia, or ill will of some sort. After all, this isn't the pink sheets, this is the world's first decentralized Massively Multiplayer Online Monetary System, MMOMS for short.

Cool by me, keep up the good work.
120  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Ive been invited to speak at a local investment club on: January 27, 2012, 04:22:13 PM
Just tell them if they invest 5000$ in bitcoins there's a good chance the price of bitcoin will grow by 100% and they will have 10,000$ and so on. Just fool them into investing into bitcoin, who cares if they understand bitcoin or not, it's only their money that matters.

Yeah, do that.
