101  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / I'd Piss on the Spark Plugs if I thought it would help, Reaper compile confusion on: March 17, 2013, 01:17:36 AM
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

I am not a Linux user.

I have managed to somehow get to the point of trying to compile reaper but I cannot get it to compile.  I don't know enough commands to know  syntax/semantics of Linux.

I got lucky and noticed CMake comes with a GUI, since I couldn't get the terminal to work, or I'd be asking a different questions.

Regardless this is the output I get.

102  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Alert: chain fork caused by pre-0.8 clients dealing badly with large blocks on: March 12, 2013, 02:17:37 AM
And now a more elaborate explanation:

0.7 and older nodes use BDB for storing the blockchain databases. It seems this database has a limit on the size of the modification it can make atomically to the database. With the larger blocks of the past days, it seems to have triggered the limit. The result is that 0.7 (by default, it can be tweaked manually) will not accept "too large" blocks (we don't yet know what exactly causes it, but it is very likely caused by many transactions in the block). Specifically, block
000000000000015c50b165fcdd33556f8b44800c5298943ac70b112df480c023 (height=225430) with >1700 transactions.

However. 0.8 (which uses a different database system) has no such limit, and happily accepts the block. As the majority of the hash power was on 0.8, the longest chain ended up using this block, which is not accepted by older nodes.

The solution is to (for now) go back to the old chain, which has block 00000000000001c108384350f74090433e7fcf79a606b8e797f065b130575932 at height 225430.

Just to ask a couple of questions.

Could this have been deliberate in any way in that someone, or group, figured out the weakness of the 0.7 client?

Is this just a random occurrence with some ASIC's coming online and Hash rate going up?

In my ignorant opinion, seems to me that if it was known the 0.7 had a dbase limit then that client should have been voted off the network a while ago.

For the newbie fun I just did a cash deposit on Gox.  Was like WOW look at these prices, bought then couldn't transfer to BTCe and finally got wise looking at the chat feed there.  Thankfully, I was able to back out on Gox and go back to cash at just a little loss.
103  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: USD to Litecoin, anyone want to sell? on: March 11, 2013, 11:56:01 PM
Okay looks like you're almost there. This is my path:

Bank -> Dwolla -> MtGOX -> Bitcoins -> Btc-e.com -> LTC

OR

Cash -> Bitinstant -> MtGOX -> Bitcoins -> Btc-e.com -> LTC

Thanks.  I guess it looks like trying again do what you stated.

Though moving from Gox to BTC-e is nuts to me.  The overhead built into the BTC-e exchange are huge.  I think that's why Bitinstant doesn't allow cash to BTC-e, but they accept BTC-e coupons.  Bitinstant would be trading against themselvves if the did, and the BTC-e site seems to show that Bitinstant to BTCe used to be a path,

Currently Gox is at $48.23xxx average $47.59xxx

BTC-e is at $45.74xxx average $45.14xxx

On top of fees that's going backwards another -5%.
104  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / USD to Litecoin, anyone want to sell? on: March 11, 2013, 10:53:44 PM
I haven't been on this forum but maybe 2 weeks, so I understand no one knows me.  One thing I know is I want to trade lite coins and have been having a hell of a time.  I know this is not your issue.

My issues are trying to get Litecoins with USD.  I cannot get any of the reasonable USD to Litecoin currency exchanges to work.  I am at my wits end.   I have registered with so many exchanges from Liqpay to OKPay, to Dwolla, bitfloor, MtGox, Bit[any word here].  I have my bank account linked finally to Dwolla.  So yo may thin think why not just transfer to Dwolla to MtGox to BTC-e in BTC?  Yeah, BTC-e keeps a wall there to keep BTC ~$3 USD below MtGox, Bitfloor and other excanges.  If you have BTC you've mined and can get your cash from MtGox there is an excellent arbitrage opportunity.  MY problem with that has been that once I Went from Localbitcoins, and bitfloor to BTC-e, took my hit, made other trades, changed to BTC moved to GOX to sell I got my cash stranded.  MtGox's rates for international wires are fine if you're trading in the $thousands+ but a few hundred paying a $20 fee is ludicrous, kills the margins.

Then there are the Gox coupons, yeah, so what good are they for BTC?  Puts me back in the position of losing ~5%+ on moving the BTC back to BTC-e, so no thanks.

Now to my actual stated purpose and question is there anyone who wants to sell approximately $500USD worth of LTC?  I prefer escrow since I don't know you either.  Like I stated I'm new so I'm not all the way up to speed on which services are the good and which are the bad.

Terms are negotiable, with my initial intent being buying at the average of the LTC/USD spread on BTC-e at an agreed upon time.

Also, yes I am getting a mining rig.  I just want to get in the game, and help make LTC a winner.

Thanks!

And if there are no offer's that fine I completely understand.

[added]
I do now know a seller of BTC on Localbitcoins, we met in person.  I have not spoken with him, but if it helps easy anyone's reservations, on top of all the other info I have that proves I'm me. I can ask him if he's willing to vouch.   I am withholding his name and my name on that board until and if such time arises that he agrees to say he met me.
105  Economy / Gambling / Re: SatoshiDICE.com - The World's Most Popular Bitcoin Game on: March 11, 2013, 04:55:40 AM
I've tried 3 bets and as far as I can tell by using the site's advanced lookup nothing is recorded.

Any ideas?  Quite possibly I'm entering the string incorrectly, or not querying the database correctly when I press the button to look up based on the transaction string.

I'm using the latest version of the standard btc client.
106  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can someone explain LiqPay Procedures? on: March 10, 2013, 12:00:52 AM
Grover, did you use a VISA card? My Mastercard worked fine. VISA has been cracking down hard on overseas transactions from the US because it's extremely difficult to try and get back stolen funds like that.

I tried both and my Visa bank's fraud department called me.

I told the auto attendant it wasn't fraud and they still denied the transaction.
107  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can someone explain LiqPay Procedures? on: March 09, 2013, 11:34:04 PM
Same as OP I'm trying to fund a BTC-E account with USD.  Getting into the whole BTC system with USD is a real treat.

I haven't been able to fund my Liqpay account yet, but their customer service is excellent.  The funding issue is not Liqpay's issue.

I had trouble with the getting the texts and on Saturday in the early afternoon in the USA someone replied to my email promptly.  I was expecting Monday, so it was a shock to get actual customer service in a few minutes on Saturday.

My funding issues have nothing to do with Liqpay it has to do with my cards or something.  I've tried two, tried the $1 hold verification and my bank blocked it.  Not Liqpay's problem.

I'm doing the address verification and looking for other avenues to fund my account.
108  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Why I Prefer to Trade BTC/USD at BitFloor instead of MtGox on: March 09, 2013, 04:41:27 AM
Do y'all mean hacked like this?

Bitcoin market hacked, crashes to below $0.01 per bitcoin
http://www.neowin.net/news/bitcoin-market-crashes---drops-below-001-per-bitcoin-due-to-hack

Bitcoin, the digital currency that some people have called "dangerous", has just had a major setback today thanks to a significant data breach.

The main Bitcoin exchange, Mt. Gox, has suffered a major database breach which caused one account in particular to be completely compromised and have its funds stolen. The real implication of this was the effect it had on the Bitcoin market - this video shows the market in real time dropping to values below 1 cent in a matter of minutes as people frantically try to remove their funds. Due to the significance of this hack, the entire Bitcoin market is being reset. This is what Mt. Gox had to say -

"The bitcoin will be back to around 17.5$/BTC after we rollback all trades that have happened after the huge Bitcoin sale that happened on June 20th near 3:00am (JST).

One account with a lot of coins was compromised and whoever stole it (using a HK based IP to login) first sold all the coins in there, to buy those again just after, and then tried to withdraw the coins. The $1000/day withdraw limit was active for this account and the hacker could only get out with $1000 worth of coins.

Maybe not an outright theft of many people's accounts but sure seems to have puckered the BTC market when it happened.

For the anonymous part, I went and deposited cash in bitfloor today and no one asked me for my ID.

I'm pretty sure bitfloor has that line (show ID if asked) on their site to keep from being harassed by "The Man".

If you do not want to show your ID then don't show it, leave.

But for Heaven's sakes someone go to bitfloor and enjoy a lot of above MtGox market prices at the moment when converting BTC/USD.
109  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Why I Prefer to Trade BTC/USD at BitFloor instead of MtGox on: March 09, 2013, 03:37:08 AM
n00b here suggesting anyone who wants to go BTC/USD go to bitfloor and clear the board down to $43.88.  If I had BTC I would.  There are no fees on ACH.

Disclaimer: My buy is at 43.88, just a small little 2n change BTC.  Wink
110  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Butterfly labs refusing escrow for $300k order on: March 05, 2013, 09:46:46 PM
Escrow will not allow them to refund earlier customers, pay contractors, and stash some away for a rainy day.

Sure it could.  An escrow account is better leverage to borrow against than purchase orders or some other statement of intent to buy that is only a contract with no collateral.

Regardless BFL doing escrow or not, which apparently they do not, these preorder's for their ASIC's have made them BTC rich and a major player in the market for BTC.  From what I've read here originally USD/BTC was 6/1.  Seems to me if BFL was selling BTC at the time to cover costs that require currency (I know y'all state BTC is currency, I'm pretty sure it's a commodity) then it seems like USD/BTC would have dropped or remained close to $6.

.....

I think BFL is using BitPay for their preorders so the bitcoins are converted to USD as soon as someone pays via bitcoin.  That's what started the whole issue with people not understanding that they were being refunded the USD equivalent of what they paid when they paid it, when they got a refund for a bitcoin order.

Thanks for the info.  I've been reading about Bitpay.  So Bitpay got the BTC.

I can see where people got real confused with differences in payments based on an exchange rate.
111  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Butterfly labs refusing escrow for $300k order on: March 05, 2013, 06:44:25 PM
Just got off the phone with butterfly labs and they refuse to give a discount or do escrow for 10 mini rigs worth $300k.  There is no way I will prepay that money while praying for 4 months. The guy was also extremely unfriendly.

Damn. You want to buy 10 of the 1.5TH/s machines?  That's awesome.

Are you going to sell shares in a mining consortium or operate them alone?

I've been thinking of getting a 60GH/s machine and been trying to decide if I should wait for BFL or try and get in on Avalon with the much worse hash/watts ratio.

But if preordering in BTC now is the time to do it since USD to BTC is so high, as long as you trust you will receive delivery or a refund if BFL does not perform.

From what I read elsewhere when people preordered last year the exchange of USD/BTC was 6/1 or about ~217BTC per 60GH/s unit, now that unit is ~40BTC that's about ~5 times fewer BTC per unit.

I'm new to the game so I haven't yet spent the time researching all the exchanges and pricing on sell orders but somewhere someone with a plan is bidding up the price of BTC to make their position more valuable in UDS/BTC (Holds true for any currency that can be indexed to USD or traded for BTC).

If you were BFL what would you do with all the BTC you received for preorders?  Sit around and look at a digiwallet? Or get a broker/banker/market maker to drive up USD/BTC?

Sure for the time being BFL and other companies that accept BTC for items priced in USD or another currency are getting fewer BTC, but I think as soon as someone clears their inventory of BTC at the current market then USD/BTC will drop.

I'm new to this game and this is just my 0.00000002 Bitcents

Remind me to put ur name on Santa's grumpy list.

And my ideas are legit.
113  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Easy Way to get Free Electricity for mining on: March 05, 2013, 07:43:12 AM
Yes there is the upfront cost of the hybrid or electric car.

Also if you're rural, you could load a flatbed with a bunch of deepcycle marine or heavy equipment batteries install a few small windmills and gen packs then you'll be charging on your way into town to get groceries.

Both ides are fool proof.  Plus you could charge your battery loaded flatbed at a charging station.  Call it an experimental vehicle.

Of you disagree you have a better idear?

So you get free electricity by spending $20k on an electric car, or probably 3x that amount spent on a flatbed of batteries? (that will need replacing in less than three years).  This is one of most bone-headed ideas I've heard in a long time.  Wait, i take that back.  Buying a 20k car just to have a battery on wheels that, in your scheme, would require a tow every day once it got a full "free" charge.

Oy vey.

Some people have no vision.  If you think of this from a government spending point of view its Nobel Prize worthy.
114  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Easy Way to get Free Electricity for mining on: March 05, 2013, 07:39:43 AM
The electricity isn't free because you're still getting it from the plug you numpty

hahaha + 1, thanks Lethn, I was due a good laugh Smiley people are sheep these days.

OP why don't you just go the illegal route like the other retards do and bypass your electricity meter

Thanks!

Sarcasm has a lot of hang-time in some arenas. (My OP is intended as sarcasm(
115  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Easy Way to get Free Electricity for mining on: March 05, 2013, 07:36:31 AM
wouldn't it be easier to run an extension cord to your neighbor's house?
This. Also, I suggest OP try http://otherpower.com/?q=Conservation/otherpower_experiments_bicycle.html

I'm too lazy.  I'll force fat kids to pedal.
116  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Easy Way to get Free Electricity for mining on: March 05, 2013, 07:34:26 AM
That all sounds very complicated. Why not just keep it plugged in where it is now, but mug a guy or two for the cash to pay your bill?

Now, you have  good plan.
117  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Easy Way to get Free Electricity for mining on: March 05, 2013, 07:32:58 AM
People just need to stop thinking mining is some kind of get rich quick scheme that they can make lots of profit from >_>

You cant?

Well if you implement my ideas as a business you sure could depreciate the equipment and maybe even get a $500million loan from barry's boondoggle energy projects.
118  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Easy Way to get Free Electricity for mining on: March 05, 2013, 07:30:02 AM

Yeah, but only if your neighbor's name is Rube Goldberg.
119  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Easy Way to get Free Electricity for mining on: March 05, 2013, 07:28:54 AM
The electricity isn't free because you're still getting it from the plug you numpty, it's like these environmentalists who claim that sort of thing is wonderful despite it coming from YEP coal! Which shows you just how much they really give a fuck about their precious planet.

You're thinking of it in the wrong way.  Open your mind, let go of logic and the facts of the physical world and you will see the greatness.
120  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Easy Way to get Free Electricity for mining on: March 05, 2013, 07:27:00 AM
I left out you could go to all the public schools and donate stationary bikes with gen packs. You could call it pedal for profit, its a win/win, the little chubbies profit from losing weight and you'd profit from the electricity.
